Did they fix the N64 controller?
>>745167546for some reason not a single third party controller has managed to reproduce the sensitivity of an og N64 controller, lost technology at this point.
>>745167546No, ModRetro perfected the controller.
Not a fan of the yellow directional buttons.
The best option for N64 controllers is to replace the plastic bowl and stick with metal. Personally I use a BitStick64 and it works really well.
>>745167649Anyone hear have the NSO 64 controller, and can tell me how its stick feels?
>>745167546thri d-pads are subpar
Hori already did decades ago
>>745168131I've used the NSO for GoldenEye and it feels just like OEM except with a tighter stick. Doesn't have the accuracy issues of a GameCube style stick like most modern alternatives. Only issue is it has roughly 12ms of latency, but that's not much considering you're running at 30 FPS or below which means >33ms between screen refreshes.>>745167869I really like how this controller feels in the hand, and the new Bluetooth protocol they promise will give it unparalleled latency (whenever it actually releases). I just don't like the GameCube style stick.>>745167546Problem with the 8bitdo is two-fold: the stick and the form factor. Stick is GameCube style which affects sensitivity in games. Form factor not being trident means you can't use the d-pad and stick at the same time which is the best way to play FPS on the system.>>745168697Ew.
>>745167649you mean the stick? it's not "lost technology" it's delibaretely not used because the stick is SHIT and breaks way too fast. It's overengineered as fuck
>>745168819>the new Bluetooth protocol they promise will give it unparalleled latency (whenever it actually releases)It's already in use for this controller and its use with the M64.
>>745168895Oh, damn, I'd assumed SCI wasn't coming at launch based on how they'd worded their feature list, but it looks like Bluetooth added it to the standard a ways back.
>>745167546I don't have a problem with using the n64 controller on original hardware but if I'm emulating I just use my ps4/5 controller and remap buttons until I get something I like.
>>745169121It’s not
>>745169341Oh okay, well SCI has been released by Bluetooth SIG, so they should update their product page to reflect that it still isn't implemented.
>>745168697That's what I use.
The true problem with the N64 controller is the C-buttons. I don’t know why the fuck Nintendo thought using 4 raised buttons to control the camera was a good idea
>>745169562c buttons are better than the c stick
>>745169562You could just use the dpad for movement and the stick for camera in first person games
>>745168862He is talking about having 170 pressure levels on each axis, modern controller sticks have jack shit, you can't aim on perfect dark/goldeneye
>>745167546The 8bitdo n64 controller mod kit is better than the 8bitdo 64 controller. The og N64 controller uses a SNES style DPAD and you can grip it play DPAD centric games like Kirby and Mischief Makers.
>>745169648C stick sucked too >>745169695Using a dpad for movement in fps games feels awful. There’s a reason why everyone including Nintendo eventually settled for a dual stick controller
>>745167869>no home buttonHoly fuck, what a blunder.
>>7451675468bitdo controllers a trash slop. RetroFighters is better.
>>745169827>Using a dpad for movement in fps games feels awful.True, that's why I preffered the control scheme where you use the C puttons for movement instead.
>>745167546why won't 8bitdo make a GameCube controller?
>>7451700348bitdo N64 Modkit with OG stick > Nintendo Switch Online 64 controller > 8bitdo 64 controller >Retro-bit Tribute 64 > Retrofighters Brawler 64
>>745169562As camera buttons they sucked. But as 4 extra face buttons they worked quite well.
>>745169983>home buttonHuh?
>>745169562They were sort of justified. Most games could not handle a high senstivity free cam without big drops. Alot of games were designed with fixed cameras and the C-buttons were like nintendo's way for people to embrace 6-button controls.
>>745170213nobody cares ccp shill
>>745170213>Nintendo Switch Online 64 controllerI have this thing collecting dust because I haven't felt the need to use it and can't figure out how to work it with my PC. Really weary about the control stick killing itself from potentiometer shit though.
>>745170284
>>745170218No they were more raised and smaller than the A and B buttons which made them shit for stuff like fighting games
>>745170168They'll make one for Analogue's FPGA GameCube in 15 years.
>>745169983There's a button combo to bring up the menu, and holding down Start starts up the console. There is no home menu, so you don't really need a "home" button.
What's better, Analogue 3D or M64?
>>745170483Don't know how much that was needed for fighters. But for most adventuring platforming type games they were fine. I like using the 64 controllers in OoT/MM more than on gamecube where the buttons became part of the C-Stick.
>>745170693I own both, I like the M64 more, but the Analogue 3D has a more mature feature set because it has been out longer (horizontal upscaling being the big thing).
>>745170305Every controller is manufactured in China.
>>745170284The modretro has no home button to bring up emulator menus, whereas the Nintendo and 8bitdo controllers do. It's a pretty big oversight.
>>745169827> Using a dpad for movement in fps games feels awful. Is this bait? What do you think WASD is?
>>745167649The N64 analogue stick has a very high pivot compared to most other analogue sticks. It was intended to give you finer control on slight movements, like Mario tiptoeing on narrow platforms or past sleeping piranha plants in Super Mario 64.Most N64 emulators do not account for this and map the analogue ranges directly, so modern sticks with shorter pivots have a harder time hitting the slight nudges the software expects. It's edge-case shit though when most of the time players will push the stick out fully, or half way to not run full speed.
>>745170693Analogue 3Ds n64 emulator was made by the same guy behind the n64 core of the open source Mister FPGA project. Because of the bespoke and modern hardware, he's been able to add a lot of features and performance improvements to Analogue 3D. If you want a more generalize FPGA emulation set up, then consider the playstation themed superstation 1, it isn't locked down to just Ps1 or N64 games, it's a consolized Mister FPGA.
>>745171424>>745171424You can easily buy a stick cap to mitigate the fucky emulator stick sensitivity.
>>745167970Well fuck you buddy
>chinkshitdoFuck off
>dogshit dpadFuck no. Why the fuck is a half decent dpad seemingly lost technology?
>>745170582Claude sloppers are killing FPGA. They're porting glorified mame emulators to the mister
>>745171136didn't ask, don't care, ccp shill
>>745167546The N64 stick should have resistance, games like F-Zero X and Mario 64 don't feel right otherwise.
>>745168697I luckily played SM64, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask all with this controller. The original feels like an abomination in comparison.
>>745172392>admitting you have tiny chink handsIt's not ok to be not american.
The placement of Z was integral for going pew pew pew at the screen
>>745171527Wrong one anonThat’s the M64
>>745167869The build quality of this and the Chromatic make me wish they'd produce a general purpose controller
>>745172392I still prefer the original controller for Zelda but it's great for SM64
My cousin Marc had this thing. He would always play with it when I came over and give me the Nintendo one because he felt bad about it. Aside from looking weird, it was fine. The C-buttons pressed kinda like mechanical keyboard keys, it was kind neat.
*blocks youre path*
i just want a controller that has mushy buttons and doesnt sound like im doing a ultra combo on a arcade machine when im pressing its buttons im really considering the nintendo switch 2 controller for PC anyone else use it?
>>745170063That’s literally the same thing but with a reversed grip
>>745168697Using this to play No Mercy or any other dpad game would be terrible.
>>745175910I owned the red variant of this controller when I was a child. it worked as intended. a little bulkier than the stantard one but was a lot more robust and less easily damaged than the Nintendo one.
>>745167546Metaphor of castration
>>745167546No.
>>745177276These things get shredded up so quickly, IIRC they were like $20 in every store so people bought them to play the joystick wrecker games
>>745167985The best option is any option that doesn't fuck with the oem radius or sensitivity but this is a zoomer thread and they only care about playing through 20 frames of input delay on their Switch subscription rental service they paid 50 dollars a month for.
>>745167546That's the funny partthey didn't.
>>745175910These things had really shitty L and R buttons
>>745167546>Two handled N64 controller.That is absolutely repulsive.
>>745167546I don't why people have trouble with the original controller, besides the shitty stick that becomes dust over time. It simply has 2 grips, one for 2D and one for 3D. Both feel just fine.If anything this controller is crap precisely because they didn't put a second stick, so it's basically useless for anything not N64/2D.
>>745179149There's like five 2D games worth playing on the N64 in its library of 20 or so games total worth playing on the whole console. It envisioned a world that never occurred.
>>745167869>go check their website>controller costs 128 leaves
>>745169562You're forgetting that 3D movement was a novelty, and based the N64 controller after the Virtual Boy controller. The C buttons was used as a way for both the camera and to do actions, as they didn't want to sacrifice one for the other, and have less buttons. It wasn't until the Dualshock came along with Sony showing Nintendo to solve all these issues, was to issue a second analog stick.
I just got a wireless N64 controller they sell on aliexpress, it's actually pretty good and has the original ranges somehow
>>745179217Look man you have to fund his military technology products
>>745179264I guarantee you that it doesn't.
>>745179216That's true, but it still doesn't affect how it handles when you use it for 3D games. It just works. I feel like this meme that the controller layout is shit started like a decade ago, when kids who weren't around when the N64 came out found it weird for having 3 legs without ever asking why it was like that.
>>745179217Modretro passes itself as a premium retro brand, they aren't aiming for the general consumer.

>>745179382Media was making fun of it in the late 90s and early 00s tho
>>745179217I like how they extended the dong on the M64 controller
>>745167869>>745179217Does this shit even support the transfer pack?
>>745167869Does the stick sensitivity actually match the original? If not then its worthless.
>>745179375It does, I tested it with the stick test homebrew and it has a 10/10 range.
>>745179458Nah, not like this. People would say it looked like a dildo or shit like that, not that the controller itself sucked.
>>74517954710/10 only? It has like 85 range on every direction

>>745167546The only fix the N64 controller needed is modern rumble because the controller feels so light and cheap on its own.

I have that one and its only really good for stuff like platformers. Playing stuff like Sin and Punishment (unless you're left handed) or any of the FPS games make this a fucking nightmare to play with.
>>745167546This is what it should have been since the beginning.>>745167869No this still has the trident shape.
Whatever happened with the steelsticks? The guy doing them got overwhelmed last I had saw and was backed up by like thousands of orders or some crap like that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx3wB9TYH00
>>745184118Yes, the trident is superior for the 64>>745179786
>>745184831I owned an N64. I played the heck out of it. That controller design was only because 3D was still a relatively new concept in gaming. Nintendo also wanted to patent a unique controller design. It had its issues and that stick would be irritating on the skin to use after awhile. It would have went over a lot better had it been shaped like the pic in the OP.
>>745186168The stick basically had the same issue as the Dreamcast stick where they were just naked plastic and you had no grip, so the solution to prevent slipping was pushing the edge of the stick and it would dig into your thumb
>>745186303A rubber thumbcap fixes that>>745186168I get it anon, it’s 30 years and you still don’t understand how to use it
The problem with all these new "n64 controllers" is that they don't get the analog stick right. IIRC in the original it required more force to move as you push it to the outer edges. However modern controllers are more sensitive and move a lot even with a slight tap. It makes playing games requiring reticles like golden eye or DK64 a pain.
did any games ever actually use the dpad? all the stuff I played was entirely analog based
>>745186869Read the thread
>>745186869Only a few. Pokemon Stadium comes to mind.
>>745167869Shame about the "war profiteer" thing, ModRetro is for video games what Black Rifle Coffee Company is for beverages
>>745186303>>745186451I should say I still do own an N64 as its one of my favorite consoles ever. Not owned but still own one. Its nothing like the DC stick. The DC stick was a lot more comfortable to use for long periods of time even without the rubber grips. The N64 stick would get that dust effect happening in its bowl and it would scrape the skin a whole lot more. The games were also very specifically made for that controller in mind so games never feel as right if played without that N64 controller. I think iirc it has to do with the stick being a digital input rather than analog. Any attempts that improve the controller for the better is good in my eyes. I stand by what I said that it would have been much better had Nintendo made a controller more in the shape of the OP pic. Including a smaller rubber stick for more comfortable use gaming.
>>745168131An NSO N64 controller uses the exact same stick mechanism as an original N64 controller but with a shine of lube on the interior parts. It will eventually get loose and degrade in the same way (at a mildly lower pace thanks to the lube job) but can be fixed with the same parts. Look up Kitsch-Bent for replacement parts. Also, NSO N64 uses all the same interior parts but the stick box is electrically different (ribbon cable plug has a different wire count) and is not a drop-in replacement for an N64 stick box. Keep that in mind.
>>745184208He seems to have vanished after selling all the last of his B-grade bowls two years ago. There's another one called BitSticks that popped up. No idea how expensive SteelSticks was for comparison but a metal bowl N64 stick is $100 from these people. Depends on how bad you want that perfect, never-wear N64 controller. https://bitsticks64.com/
