>”Jack Thompson was right but we don’t want to admit it”: The Game
>>
>>745172985
No, Jack Thompson's thing was that children should not have access to violent video games. And now we have 9 year olds playing GTA Online. So in a way yeah, he was right.
>>
>>745172985
>Jack Thompson
Was a grifter for boomer audience, like Anita for millennials
>>
>>745173063
Modern zoomers have basically become as puritan as 90s Christian boomers. So many of them go into a frothing rage the second they see sexy fanservice in anime like Bleach, or when someone goes on a rampage in GTA.
>>
>>745172985
What does Jack Thomson have to do with dressing up recruitment ads as entertainment?
>>
the game was not personally insulting you. how low IQ do you have to be to get personally insulted by a game talking about how a traumatized guy can't be honest with himself
>>
>>745172985
Fuck you OP you faggot, I just lost.

>>
this game was way too over analysed for what it is
>>
>>745173485
Jack's platform was all about how impressionable kids are. I doubt he would give a fuck about what I play. Furthermore, Spec Ops was never about the players becoming killers in real life
>>
Deep...

>>
The game's message failed because they didn't make it so after you had accomplished the original objective, you could walk all the back to the starting point of that first level and get a cutscene ending.

that was all they had to do
>>
>>745173635
Blame the video essayists for trying to make the story out to be some Stanley Parable-esque meta-commentary on Call of Duty, even though the story stops making sense when you view it that way.

Most people who do stupid debates about that game in recent days are people who don't realize that game SPECIFICALLY was done as a reaction to what were military games...in the early 2010s. Things are very different today as 14 years has passed since it's release. To put into perspective, 14 years, that's the difference between games made in 1998 and 2012, the year of that game release.
But considering the game isn't even available anymore and has being so for quite some time, and the overall pretty awful sales it got, I think most people talking haven't even played the game at all. They just base themselves on stupid video essays.
>>

The ultimate message of Spec Ops is “Call of Duty sucks ass.” The political themes, while real, are secondary to the fairly trivial intended theme. It’s like how everyone threw a fit about The Boys’s politics when it’s really just about how Garth Ennis hates capeshit.

The reality is, everyone inherently has a conscience and knows inside themselves that degeneracy is bad. So when gen x and millennials try to erase that and force the idea that every kind of degeneracy imaginable is perfectly ok and you're a nazi chud if you disagree, then younger generations are going to react against that.
Our culture has absolutely no fucking idea what to do with itself now that God is dead. We cannot exist functionally without religion. It's been proven that killing God has been a failed experiment. All we have now is confused culture war extremists constantly seething against each other without even really knowing why.

Car horns are for getting other people's attention, but more often used in traffic/driving situations to voice displeasure with other drivers. Well yes you are choosing to engage in a murder sim and your defense is you paid to experience it and experiencing it is the point of its existence. So it stands to reason its fair to highlight why such a experience exists in the first place. the argument basically boils down to “you chose to consume this, therefore you’re not allowed to question what it’s depicting or why it was made”, that’s a pretty bizarre standard to apply to art, you can make the exact same argument about movies, I mean if a director makes an extremely violent movie, it would be ridiculous to respond to criticism with “well, you paid to watch it, so clearly you wanted blood”, the audience didn’t create the movie, the director did, the fact that people chose to engage with it doesn’t somehow transfer responsibility for its content onto them

and this is something movies have been arguing about for decades, when filmmakers get criticized for excessive violence, exploitation, gore, etc, we don’t generally pretend the audience is secretly the author and that the movie only exists because “people want blood”, we can ask what the filmmaker was trying to say, what the work is actually doing, and whether it succeeds or fails on those terms, you can obviously criticize someone for willingly engaging with something too, but that’s a different argument, “you chose to play it” is not a rebuttal to “this game chooses to portray murder in this particular way and I think that choice is worth criticizing”

it’s also kind of ironic that video games still get dragged back into this incredibly basic “if you consume it, you wanted it” argument when other forms of media have spent decades moving past it, the creator made the choices, the audience choosing to experience those choices doesn't make the audience responsible for making them
>>

thats not what the argument boils down to you are allowed to question all you want. But youre also allowed to stop engaging with it. You are twisting "I want to engage with it to see it through to the end" and the game pointing this out with "OH SO IM JUST NOT ALLOWED TO QUESTION ANYTHING HUH?" Which is not what its saying by pointing out you are engaging with the story and concept even when the absurdity is clear. I think you're the one making a presumption about what “seeing it through to the end” means, continuing to engage with something doesn't inherently mean “I want this experience” in the sense you're assigning to it, people finish movies, books, games, etc, because they want to understand where they're going, what they're trying to say, or whether they ultimately justify what they've been doing, “just stop engaging with it” is technically an option, but it's not really an argument against criticism, if anything, that's a pretty impoverished way of engaging with art, “this bothers me or I don't like what it's doing, therefore I should immediately stop rather than see where it goes”, a work can be uncomfortable, frustrating, or even repellent and still be worth engaging with precisely because you want to interrogate it

that's why I don't think “you chose to continue” establishes what you think it establishes, you're taking the player's continued engagement as proof that they accept the premise the game is criticizing them for, but that's exactly what's being questioned, someone can continue because they're curious, because they want to see the story through, because they're analyzing it, or simply because they don't know where the work is going yet, if the game's point is genuinely “you're participating in this despite recognizing its absurdity” that's fine, but then the interesting question is whether the game actually demonstrates that point, rather than simply asserting it and treating continued engagement as proof, otherwise it's basically “you kept playing, therefore I was right about why you kept playing”

and that's where the art analogy matters, nobody watching an uncomfortable or violent movie is obligated to walk out the moment they dislike something, they can then say “this was justified” or “this was gratuitous and the director failed”, continuing to watch doesn't invalidate the latter criticism
>>
>>745184525

Jack Thompson wanted M-rated games suppressed and gated off to an extent as to make it virtually impossible for them to thrive. His “for the children” shtick was just a cover for the fact that he thought these games shouldn’t be allowed to exist at all. If he had his way, M-rated games would have been banned off of consoles and brick and mortar retail (thus depriving them of 90% of sales) and making it extremely difficult to develop anything with mature themes just like how you hardly ever see AO-rated games because everyone tries to avoid that rating due to risks it carries. Subsequently, what is rated for Teens now would become the new battleground for “mature content”, until that gets gated off and so on until it becomes a hassle to develop anything with themes beyond that of the average bing bing wahoo game.
The fact that you and the rest of your generation falls for this grift shows just how pathetically infantile and easily manipulated you are.

Context and details are what make a story. "Doctor fails to save someone" is completely different from "Doctor chooses to save someone else." You might be genuinely retarded if you can't grasp this.
>yes most people act like telenovela characters
Not necessarily, but most people are in fact quite melodramatic, especially about stuff that personally affects them. Just as an example

>Instead you raid their supply wagons to plunder stuff

>Not necessarily, but most people are in fact quite melodramatic
you're so close to getting it, I'm not saying people don't have emotions anon, I'm saying the particular portrayal in the show of the woman screaming "give him back" is a really cheesy, clunky, cheap, hamfisted way of the author beating the audience over the head with its themes, there's a thing called subtlety and restraints which a lot of narratives use in their writing that's still able to convey things just as effectively, if not even more so because the audience is more engrossed by it since it feels more natural, instead of some amateurish overtly exaggerated reaction in an attempt to get an emotional response

That's the whole damn point.
>but that would be on you not understanding that hospitals have to make calls with limited resources all the time, shit happens bro I don't know what else to tell you
And you expect them to understand this? Most people can't even see what's beyond tomorrow. And in this case the wife's reaction makes perfect sense because she has someone she can blame. If Tenma operated on the guy just like they promised to and he ended up dying anyway, she could maybe accept that the hospital truly did their best to save him. But that wasn't what happened.

Jack Thompson IS right. He always was right. The fact is, all vidya was made for kids and played primarily by then. Even "mature" rated games. Especially those ones. Most San Andreas players were 12 year old boys. The only thing that has changed is that kids arent playing much vidya these days, they're going out on their ebikes and shit. Vidya is propped up by manchildren who got addicted as kids. And the violent games they played as children absolutely did make them more violent and more desensitized to violence. It's undeniable.

I'm just gonna come out with it and say the game mechanically, visually, and narratively aren't good enough to earn any kind of metaanalysis of the player and what they're willing to do in a video game.

really because I've played plenty of violent video games in my life and not once have I ever thought stealing cars or shooting people is a good idea, maybe if American parents stopped being stupid and lazy and learned the difference between fiction and reality they would not be in the mess they are today.

violence in video games is bad but killing people for oil and to cover up a pedophile scandal for some of the most powerful people around is A-OKAY

Hotline Miami mogs the shit out of spec ops narratively speaking, both in meta and canon interpretation.

uh-huh, and who does America bend the knee to?

I'll give you a hint: it's a country that starts with the letter "I" and ends with "L"

most people who commit crimes do not think they're a good idea insofar as their rationality is concerned
AND YET... they commit them.

Yeah I get that, but if every major European country bends the knee to America, then by extension you also.....

what people fail to understand is, the game didn't make you buy the gun, nor did it make you pull the trigger, there's always a choice, always a consequence, a piece of fiction cannot ever make you do something, you choose to do it, if they could then fiction would've been banned entirely save for the most milquetoast kids story books.

Sorry, bud. There is no proof that Columbine would have happened if DOOM didn't came out. You're just out there protecting a multibillion dollar industry because you enjoy its products, and that's fine. But don't pretend like you can create The Line between fictional and real violence or how they (don't?) influence and reinforce each other.

Because they added one for the white phosphorous scene and literally every playtester found it and chose it, which got them assmad enough to remove it.
They knew full well they were full of shit before they even released the game, yet chose to act like pretentious wankers anyway. Poetically similar to Walker in a way, I suppose.

nor is there proof that the shooting wouldn't of happened, correlation does not equal causation, by that logic I could then say the bible should be banned because it has gotten millions more people killed then video games ever have or religion in general but you'd never hear people like jack ever say that because then he'd lose his voters, politicians only say shit to scare/rile up boomers who don't understand anything.

if I say "hey you should eat a carrot" it wouldn't make people eat a carrot, that shooting happened because they let a child who was bullied mind you have access to a fire arm, not because he played doom, thousands of people have played doom both new and old, if doom was the cause there'd be thousands more shootings

itt: a bunch of psychos that actually completed the game

I…
You’re right. I, no, WE, need to stop deflecting blame.
We MUST be better men
