too busy erping with a lazily cropped anime avatar in one of the hundreds of coomer/gacha threads made this hour

I will forever be bonking shit to death and thats quite fun still, but yea

Adulthood was realizing my favorite role-playing games all have irredeemable dogshit combat. FO1/2/NV, BG1/2, NWN, Planescape, Arcanum, SS2, ME1, etc.

So what's an RPG with good combat?
>>
>>745182848
Among those games I'd say Arcanum's combat applies especially. Like it's genuinely impressive how bad it is
>>
>>745182921
Doesn't exist. I'm not trying to start an argument. A good RPG must have bad to adequate combat because combat should be the "you didn't even fucking try exploring, learning, interacting, or socializing" option to punish bad players (read: retards).

Thinking about it: Bloodlines is a cult classic, but everyone hates the mandatory combat sections like the sewers. Why? One, it has dogshit combat mechanics, and two, because being Brujah/Gangrel fuck-up who unga-bungas through everything is murderhobo retard behavior.

Yes, it was absolutely great for its time, and I still play it now and then to this day.
It's a shame that its legacy got ruined with BG3. It completely shat on the previous games.
I have no doubt the rumored remake will further ruin the series.

I hate it man. Some people say 'hurr shut up boomer, your game is old, who cares', but they would complain too if in like 20 years from now they made a BG4 and for example their beloved Shadowheart became a horrid hag that acted completely different from what they remembered, and completely disregarded the previous stablished lore.

Too bad there's no guide for zoomers to help them mod the game so it's not just playable, but also enjoyable (Skip Irenicus Chateau, Unfinished Business, Ascension, etc.)
>>
>>745183424
As much as I love BG1 and 2, it's understandable why it isn't popular with the younger audience. The graphics aren't flashy, the mechanics require some getting used to, and there's a lot to read. It is not exactly the type of game people would stream, for example, or get hyped about.

I'm fine with it becoming a treasure from the past, I just wished its legacy was properly preserved and respected.

There's also dozens of pitfalls in the unmodded game that new players won't know about until it's too late, and similarly dozens of ways to break the game that new players won't recognize and taint their perspective of it all the same.

You wouldn't believe how long it took for my claim that Cleric/Ranger is one of the most broken class combos in the game to finally be recognized.

In some respects it might be. If mods are allowed though I'd say NWN is more of a contender, the highs never get as high as BG2 but there's enough variety in modules that as long as you enjoy the basic NWN gameplay well enough there's a ton of cool adventures to go on. It's one of my few forever-installed games and I always have a few characters going on different adventures so I can pick and choose what I'm in the mood to play. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh I love to play some NWN bros you get that one interface mod so it's a little more pleasant to use, fuck with your graphics to get it how you like it, then just adventure like a maniac. For me it's leaving the modern graphic settings enabled so it's more like little animated dolls jittering around and then think of it like a fancy D&D board and your imagination's where the real graphics are IMAGINATION ANONYMOUS. NEVERWINTER NIGHTS IS THE GATEWAY TO IMAGINATION

You get vampires as a racial enemy, Insect Plague, Iron Skins, Chaotic Commands, and True Sight, you get stealth (and backstab if you play a human and go Stalker/Cleric), you can gain three-dot proficiency to dual-wield Flail of Ages and Crom Faeyr, and you get Greater Whirlwind.

>>
NWN or NWN2, which one should I play?
>>
>>745185056
Some of the modules in NWN are exceptionally good like Tyrants of the Moonsea and Darkness over Daggerford
>>
>>745177880
Yes easily
>>
>>745185056
1, easily. If you're only looking to play official content then you can safely ignore the Wailing Death campaign which is the normal NWN1 campaign (It's hack and slash, and it's fine, but it doesn't have enough story meaning on the expansion campaigns to matter) and just play Shadows of Undrentide and then Hordes of the Underdark (Which imports your character from SoU, you're the same dork) and then decide if you want more. NWN2's got some fun story points but it's way more jank and much more limited in custom adventures. Definitely go for NWN1 first and then if you REALLY want to dip your toe into it after then give 2 a try, but 1's the juicier of the two

I'm be straight with you. BG2 is when Bioware designed their formula of companion-driven storytelling. I'm honestly sick of it now, but loved it when it was novel those first games.
>>
>>745184930
FF7 oneshotted the crpg industry, Planescape torment was very inspired by it, by admission of the devs
>>
>>745177880
No, it actually have quite a few structural and design flaws, especially since Throne of Bhaal was meant to be BG3 before Bioware gave up on that idea and phoned it in as an expansion.

>>
>>745185358
Same. It was amazing at the time, and in a way I still like the idea in principle (you interacting with your party members and all), but nowadays it definitely took a turn for the worse I'll say that much.
I think it can implemented, but it must not get in the way of the gameplay in a way that lessens the player's experience, like with characters macking on you if you're not interested and all.
>>
>>745185358
>>745185510
In my opinion, it's because the companion quests in BG2 have generally sad endings to the characters' arcs. There's no "I'm glad you stood by my side after my wealthy family disowned and deadnamed me, Player" kind of false sadness, either. None of your companions get a storybook ending (except for the super special cinnamon roll that is Aerie), only the conviction to keep moving forward with their lives, or dying in the process.
>>
>>745185358
it's really hard to go back though, it ends up feeling like something is missing.
>>
>>745177880
I would argue that wasteland 3 it the pinnacle of crpgs.
>>
>>745177880
no
>>
>>745177880
it's pretty good but I think the frankly extremely bizarre format of the game frontloading all the side content and then putting the player on a linear track for the majority of the main plot was pretty offputting. I still love the game but I think FO1 clears in terms of pacing and cohesive-ness.
>>
>>745182008
>tfw you get interrupted by your companion telling you to visit the local mob while trying to hospitalize a half-dead man you picked up while going to a timed castle capture quest you got while trying to sleep at a tavern after quitting the tutorial dungeon
>tfw you now just desperately try to avoid anyone who looks important so they don't force you on yet another quest
That was both annoying and pretty memorable. I wonder if it's an intentional thing developers were aiming for or just a coincidence.
>>
>>745187140
seems completely intentional based on criticism of the first game. some people simply cannot function without rails.
>>
>>745187140
I think their mindset was that you should have the freedom to do whatever you wanted and go pretty much anywhere right from the game's start. The problem with that is obvious to anyone who's played BG2. At least in BG1, you theoretically could go anywhere and abuse RNG to avoid getting mauled to death by wolves, but the game made it very clear you were to go to the Friendly Arm Inn, and from there travel south to Nashkell.

rangers suck. they're the second worst class in the game after monks. they level slow. have no good class gear.. they're forced to be good which sucks because they can't use the man coat. they're forced to be human/helf/elf which means they can't be a dwarf and get superior shorty saves. they can't get grand mastery so they can't get to 10 attacks per round with improved haste.
no cleric weapon can back stab besides the quarter staff. I'd rather take a pure class dwarven beserker over any ranger. a fighter/druid can get 100% physical immunity with shape change and hardiness way quicker than a ranger can and can spam insects for day. a dual classed fighter cleric can get 10 apr and cleric buffs.

your build sucks dicks and I suspect you do too.

That stuff is fine, it's a good class, but it's hardly broken compared to other classes. No serious BG2 nerd thinks ranger/cleric is the most broken class in the game. It has been a known "good class" since the game came out, thoughbeit. You shouldn't larp like that, it's bad for (you).
