Quintet's weakest RPG.
Illusion of Gaia > Soul Blader > Robotrek > Terranigga

Secret of Mana came out first though so if anything someone demanding Terranigma would hear "We have Terranigma at home"

Terranigma does kind of suck. 16 bit rpgs is my favorite genre and I love games like illusion of Gaia and soul blazer but terranigma isn't anything special.. Think people over valued it because it wasn't released in the US. It's not a bad game but it's a pretty weak one

I don't know if Terranigma was good, but I do know that PAL regions absolutely got fucked when it came to SNES JRPGs.

>no EarthBound

>no Chrono Trigger

Ironically, Secret of Mana WAS released in the PAL regions.

I dont get how anyone can like the combat in the mana games. Its the worst parts of action combined with the worst parts of turn based combat. A total slog
>>
>>745187809
I agree despite conceptually liking the idea. I think they just needed more dungeons to space out all the town building
>>
>>745180924
Masaya Hashimoto > Tomoyoshi Miyazaki.

Miyazaki led quintet's B-Team (terranigma's dev team).
>>

>>
>>745191419
Mana, Gaia, Terranigma, etc all got PAL releases because they didn't have turn based combat.
Turn based combat was seen as too autistic, though we did get a few turn based games in PAL land like Lufia 2, Breath of Fire 2 etc.
>>
>>745192381
Turn based doesn't sell, it's archaic and doesn't hold the player's attention.
>>
>>745188610
Explain to me how Terranigma is worse than Illusion or Gaia or Soul Blazer? I like the entire trilogy, but Terranigma has much better graphics, more fluid gameplay and story. Soul Blazer specially is really light on the RPG elements.
>>
>>745188610
People mostly remember it for the ending.
>>
>>745179115
It has been enough decades. It is time to admit that som was fucking dogshit. Literally the weakest game in a franshsie full of mediocre stinkers, with only the very first being good and reaching the greatness levels of Links Awakening.
Crosscode shits on the entire series as a whole.
>>
>>745187809
It has a strange dynamic where you feel unironically way lonelier and more hopeless once other humans are revived.
I'm not sure it was intentional, but I like the contrast.

You're genuinely too young and stupid to understand Terranigma. Its only rival in terms of a story is Xenogears. Play it again when you're at least 35.

Its super interesting and probably intentional.
You start off outside of time in this frozen world and then after reviving the continents you move through what are millions of years of evolution and developments and the further you progress the more things slow down until you reach the human age and get dragged into their minute affairs that ultimately end up being just as impactful.
>>
>>745194708
It intersects both "millennials first jrpg" and "played it with friends" for a really hard nostalgia blast.
And playing with friends sucked too because you had to watch the main guy play for hours till the 2nd and 3rd character became playable.

I played it years ago and I still remember a ton of shit. That's one of the most soulful games in existence.
>How comfy Crysta is and the graphical effects in it
>The dark world map
>The tower's summits
>The first resurrection (Plant)
>The bird transporting you
>Going on the trial with the cub
>The goat scene
>The human resurrection
>Feeling lonely and homesick despite having fucking human beings around because you can't talk to animals and plants anymore
>Learning your bird bro is in a fucking cage and seeing the effect of the human resurrection on plants and animals
>Despite that, the game never gets dumbly misanthropic
>Seeing lion bro again
>Ark's death and revival
>Skateboard boy. I won't say he's a great character, but he's such a '90s caricature that it's funny.
>Learning that the only thing you could still cling to is and always was fake, but continuing because that's the right thing to do
>The ending
Even the music is fucking great.
I won't say it's the greatest game ever; the battle system became kind of samey, magic is not that useful and not usable on most bosses, the second part is indeed lesser than the first, and the difficulty spike with the Maria boss seems to indicate parts were cut.
But still, what a great fucking game.
>>
>>745198721
>Skateboard boy. I won't say he's a great character, but he's such a '90s caricature that it's funny.
Reminder that the game's character designer also made Chocolate Panic and its OVA.

That was the "read the item descriptions" check - the weapon you find in the castle might have a higher damage value but also an element that she resists.

I genuinely think the Japanese believe they created Wizardry.

Sure, Evermore's programming is much more polished than Mana's or SD3's
The menus felt snappy and everything felt smooth and not laggy
It still has the same problems of Mana though
Both have fucking great soundtracks

It's a shame the gameplay in all the 3 games mentioned is not that great
The Seiken Densetsu series could have been something special

Imagine if they did this
>Local/Online co-op
>Combat similar to SD2/3 with influences from FF7R but with menus being completely real-time and not pausing the game so that the gameplay can have actual depth
>Graphics would be Cuphead-tier with characters being designed in a similar style to 90s shonen like Nobuteru Yuki’s designs for SD3 on top of georgeously painted backgrounds in the style of the late Hiro Isono done by a top painter of high pedigree
>No shitty ass voice acting for enhanced atmosphere

Secret of Mana > Trials of Mana and its not even close, that's the real hard truth people have to come to terms with. started IoG last weekend, about 5hrs in and it's got a great soundtrack, graphics, and cast so far. I like the dungeons and combat, the transformations are really fun but something about the combat/dungeon parts and exploration/town parts being hard-separated makes the level-up aspect of it feel a bit pointless. Since as far as I can tell you can't progress without wiping all the enemies anyways, but maybe I'm just retarded and you're not actually required to kill everything. I do like how you can break the damage limit of 999 in Evermore if you glitch your strength value to 60K and mash attack on a boss, not even Seiken Densetsu 3 lets you do 1000 damage in a single attack on a boss.

Alright but what about in the game?

It looked like the NPCs stood completely still in the demo. Why do modern devs do this?

Amazing music and a unique storyline, but something about it didn't work for me. Maybe it was too ambitious for its own good. It's better than SoM, but SoM is unfinished.
>>
The story in this game is too sad and upsetting.

That's the last boss of EVO, correct? That game was weird, but very interesting.

The one balancing mis-step in the game.
Goes from impossible to ez by grinding an extra 2 levels.

You are so Slur brainrotted…

Both of them, yeah.

>>745224992
Well yeah, most people are fucking garbage at video games. So why would they talk about a game where they can't beat the first level? It's an extremely well designed game, just very hard.
>>
>>745224216
Square confirmed via its investor call that Elliot performed well, so I'm glad it wasn't a flop. Just goes to show that the browns here don't play games and are completely useless when it comes to talking about them

Rankings of action rpgs from someone with no nostalgia (played all these games for the first time within the past 6 years)

Terranigma > Trials > IoG > Soul Blazer = SoM

I'll be playing SoE soon

>I genuinely think the Japanese believe they created Wizardry.
Of course not. American influences in Japan have always been very clear, whether in games or movies.
What happened was that Japan treated consoles and PCs as two completely different things. From the developers' perspective, console players wanted more straightforward, arcade-style experiences. More complex RPGs, slow-paced adventure games, etc., were exclusive to computers (which, contrary to what some people say, have always been very popular in Japan).
I think their idea is that the American audience was even more averse to "complex" games on consoles than the Japanese audience.

That's not just a japanese thing, there's a reason you almost never saw CRPGs or imsims outside of PC in the west.

I go back and forth between whether I like Terranigma or Gaia more, but both are good and a lot more soulful than other ARPGs from that era.

>It still has the same problems of Mana though
not all.
i never did like how in Mana if an enemy attacks you, even if they MISS, you lose all your charge. makings charging up to the higher levels not even worth it.
you don't lose charge in Evermore.

Soul Blazer is my favorite out of them. I love the undersea area.
