I think I get why the developers decided on that. They wanted to maximize immersion, and thought giving the protagonist a voice would make it harder to self-insert. However IMO they were wrong, Artyom at this point is a fully established character and we've heard his voice in the journal entries for two-three games now, and his english VA is decent enough that Artyom could've been voiced in real time without issue.

Or maybe Artyom's just the strong silent type, like Gary Cooper.
>>
>>745204526
>Good series except for the communist sympathy angle but that's not surprising given the writer has thanked Israel publicly for his education.
The communist is the secondary bad guy in the first game and the main antagonist in the second game.

You have no idea what is going on in this series kek. It is a condemnation of basically every political ideology because all of it devolves into distrust and corruption and strife. The commies and the wannabe-nazis are cartoonishly evil, and even the designated good guys of the Order are shown to be short-sighted and stupid most of the time.

A talking protagonist is tricky thing to balance. On one hand you want the protagonist to feel like a real person, but you don't wanna make him too chatty. I hate games where protagonist make random comments or quips when entering a new area or something like that.

That being said, Artyom being silent in Exodus was weird weird. The first two games are more about Artyom just following orders being barked at him and told what to do so it works there, but in Exodus he's having meaningful conversations with people he knows well.

>when Anna starts talking about purpose in life and wanting to have kids
>Artyom's still quiet, only thing the player can do is just leave and get up
Made me almost shout at the screen. Who the fuck stays silent during that? He should have talked in those sections. He already talks in the loading screen anyway, and in 2033 he sometimes narrated things during gameplay as internal monologue. I think a good compromise could've been Artyom monologuing in his own thoughts during conversation, I don't know why the devs didn't decide on that.
>>
>>745205570
Nosalises got alot harder to kill in redux which also gives you less ammo to carry and no early hellbreath.

The original Metro 2033 has superior atmosphere and artstyle compared to the Redux, however the original's gunplay feels really bad because of how unreliable shooting is and how tanky mutants are. I tried playing it on hardcore and eventually gave up because it was fucking stupid to get mauled by mutant rape over and over again.
>>
>>745199331
>he never said that
He literally did. At one point during the comfy train sections he starts talking about wanting grandkids.

Even if he lived, the chance he'd get grandkids is not very high. Artyom and Anna are both irradiated as fuck so who knows if they can even have kids.

The cure that artyom got in Novosibirsk, not only got rid of radiation, but also regenerate damaged organs. They will have children post exodus ending.
>>
>>745205784
Same, the artstyle, especially for the NPC's looks weird as hell. But the environment artstyle starts to grow on me, I think they are trying to give a dreamy vibe to last light and it worked pretty on surface levels, but the actual metro level suffered from it due to how bright they make it to be.
>>
I read the book Metro 2033 and found it great, though it is extremely bleak and at times its ambiguity confusing.

Were the Dark Ones trying to enter Exhibition/VDNKh because they were trying to talk to Artyom, because he's the only one 'compatible' with their mode of communication?

And what the fuck was that thing under the Kremlin? Mutated by radiation, biological weapon, or something that existed pre-war?
>>
>>
>>745208221
The scariest thing for me in the book were the librarians. They're pretty scary in the game but in the book they're these quiet highly intelligent skinwalkers who imitate human speech, and the whole scholar caste of Polis is terrified of them.

>Were the Dark Ones trying to enter Exhibition/VDNKh because they were trying to talk to Artyom, because he's the only one 'compatible' with their mode of communication?
Yes. They're constantly in touch with him, this gives him the sixth sense he possesses. There are multiple moments in his journey where he would have died but the intervention of Dark Ones saves his life. The most obvious one being in the final tunnel on the route to Polis, when he hears a clear whisper telling him to freeze and stop moving.

Artyom eventually figures this out, realizes that he only had plot armor because they kept him safe and they're not actually evil at all - precisely at the moment when the missiles are in the air and right before they're wiped out.

I thought Exodus was alright for what it was. You have to go into the game with the knowledge that it's an intentional switchup after the first two games, which thoroughly used up the Metro as a setting. They explored every possible trope and gimmick and scenario Glukhovsky came up with about it. By the end of LL, Artyom can pretty much conquer the Moscow surface by himself when blindfolded. A third game needed to advance beyond that. Besides, even the books make it clear that the outside world very much survived and puts Artyom into the direction of exploring it, albeit in a much worse and unlikeable way (Metro 2035)

That being said, I still think the surface should've been more hostile than how Exodus portrayed it. More radiation, more monsters, more supernatural shit, in a much wider radius around Moscow. The Baikal lake in the ending should've been the very first truly habitable area the soldiers find.
>>
>>745216894
Anon, I doubt every single time you talk with someone, even in intimate, 1 on 1 conversations, it ends up with you just staring like a fucking retard. Artyom's character being mute in Exodus is about as objectively bad as it gets
>>
>>745218395

>>
>>745211793
Stupid. Gameplay is better in OG 2033. Dynamic armor system made shooting people much more interesting in terms of mechanics and visuals. LL/Redux neutered the system. Stealth was also much more fun since you had to very carefully choose which enemies to sneak past and which to kill instead of simply using the gay ass Press F to knock out all the enemies in the entire stations then go around looting their corpses.

>And what the fuck was that thing under the Kremlin?
The result of a biological attack. That thing is the remnant of the Russian government being forced together like the creature from the thing. That's why metro 2 is empty, they somehow all died from the bioweapon before the missiles detection system goes off, which is strange because the rest of the city got early warning system to evacuate to the metro, yet kremlin didn't. As if the bio-weapon somehow delivered without triggering the detection system.

Unlike in fallout, America is implied to "win" the war. In the desert level in metro exodus, there's a recording from the sat-com center how they still see lights from some American cities two years after the war and they can't do anything about it as they can't contact anyone from Russia armed forces.

Idk how to explain it but redux has better otherworldly and dreamy vibe to it. It kinda looks like a painting more and help to reinforce that you are playing a game based on a novel. Nah, the librarians are still harder and more unpredictable, sometimes they run away after getting starred and sometimes they will simply keep slowly walk toward and punches you anyway. You cant snake from them at all. The blind gorillas are easier, even if you got spotted you can just run and break contact and they will forget about you. the librarians,on the other hand, will hunt you down if you trigger them once.

Yes and it was very well made and fun despite being a VR game. The only problem is that they make the mutants overpowered again like in original 2033.
>>
>>745224169
I mean, that's pretty much the intended playstyle for Exodus. The devs want you to kill the obvious bad guys like the slavers and cannibals but spare the innocent ones like the summer camp kids.
>>
>>745223746
Nah you can see it's different. Military berets are supposed to be soaked in warm water and pushed down so that the flap on the side forms to your head and hangs down. The beret Miller is wearing is what it looks like if you just put it on without adjusting it at all, it just becomes a poofy muffin hat.
>>
>>745223725
>The third one felt like it didn't innovate on anything,
They make humans AI smarter and mutants more reasonable to fight. The latter take less bullet to kill and can be stunned by melee attack unlike in the previous games.

>>

Are you referring to world war or metro war?
World war wise, commies didn't necessarily lose. But they went full retard and kept playing dead for 20+ years after the war, while other countries just moved on and rebuilt.
Metro war, the commies are pretty onedimensional bad guys and they get most of themselves killed trying to capture d6.

To be fair, it's deliberate. The book is not interested in delivering concrete answers, it's more about showing you people desperately building their own myths to fill the space where answers should be. Rarely does it ever explicitly confirm anything.

Librarians in Moscows have eyes, otherwise the strategy of having a staring contest with them wouldn't make sense.
The blind ones in Novosibirsk are completely eyeless.
>>
>>745226565
in the book the librarians look different
>A pointed grey ear appeared from behind Daniel's tipped-back head, followed by a huge green eye that sparkled in the flashlight's beam. The librarian slowly looked out from behind his dying partner, almost shyly, and his eyes sought Artyom's. Don't turn away. Look right there, right at him, right in his pupils... The pupils were vertical; those of an animal. And how strange it was to see vestiges of intelligence in these sinister, impossible eyes!
>Now, up close, the librarian in no way resembled a gorilla, or even a monkey. His predatory face was overgrown with fur. The mouth was full of long fangs and reached almost from ear to ear, while the eyes were of such a size that they made the monster unlike any animal Artyom had ever seen, either in real life or in pictures. It seemed to him that this went on for a very long time. Having plunged into the creature‟s gaze, he could no longer tear himself away from those pupils.
they also imitate human behavior and speech with eerie precision
>>
>>745222104

>>745227368
the best part of the book was people simply trying to make their ways through tunnels and it's a complete horror show half the time
the best one is where Artyom is walking through the darkness and notices that the echo of his footsteps is starting to happen quicker and quicker, until it starts happening before he even takes a step and he freaks the fuck out

Exodus exists to rectify the mistakes of the Metro 2035 book. Glukhovsky wrote a book about finding out the outside world still exists but the book made the mistake of making all the characters and factions so unlikeable that it was just annoying to read and left a bitter taste in the end. Exodus reaches a similar point to 2035 but does it in a much more comfy and digestible way, that's what the game is for.

Probably, yes. The game, just like Exodus, is written by Glukhovsky who was even in peacetime extremely critical of the Russian government. They chased him out of Russia when the war started. It may be pessimism but I think we are in for some ham-handed immersion breaking shit with zero subtlety.

>Everyone has come to their end, my friend. I don't know quite how this has happened but this time humanity has overdone it. There's now no more heaven and no more hell. There isn't purgatory either. After the soul flies out from the body - I hope you at least believe in the immortal soul? Well, it has no refuge anymore. How many megatons and bevatons does it take to disperse the noosphere? It was as real as this kettle.

>And whatever you say, we weren't sparing ourselves. We destroyed both heaven and hell. We now happen to live in this strange world, in a world where after death the soul must remain right where it is. You understand me? You will die but your tormented soul won't get reincarnated anymore and, seeing as there is no more heaven, your soul won't get any peace and quiet. It is doomed to remain where you lived your entire life, in the metro.

>Maybe I can't give you the exact theosophic explanation for why this is but I know one thing for sure: in our world the soul stays in the metro after death. It will rush around under the arches of these underground tunnels until the end of time because there isn't anywhere for it to go. The metro combines material life with the hypostases of the other world. Now Eden and the Netherworld are here, together.

My opinion is that they're overcompensating for the lack of support towards the war because they've been chilling in Malta since 2014, to avoid paying taxes to ukraine.
Now that pro-war propaganda is a profitable business, why not cash in with an easy Wnazi ideology is horrible but in fictional post-apocalyptic russia it's especially bad!" rhetoric?

The worst thing about the games is the protagonist being mute. It really makes no sense because both the english and the slavic voice actors are good enough, and we can clearly hear him during the journals.

I replayed Exodus a few months ago and kept wondering how on earth the devs failed to recognize how awkward a voiceless Artyom would be. The worst moment was when Anna started talking about serious shit like having kids, and the only communication you can offer is vigorously shaking your mouse or some shit. Dumb as hell.

As for the complaints about linearity being bad, I never agreed with that. There is nothing intrinsically better about open or nonlinear worlds. It doesn't actually create more content or more effort or more soul than linear games, at best it's just stretching that same development effort over bigger distances with more filler, and in most cases it's actually an excuse to develop a less interesting game world. Ironically linear games often end up being a lot more focused, dense, and interesting. Focused and dense is what I'd definitely call Metro, and I mean that as a compliment.
