Generally I just do not believe there is a director that understands the soul of resident evil and Resident Evil also went through many incarnations each one vastly different from the next. There are really 3 main eras of RE the Tank Controls era which had it's own unique aesthetic totally disconnected from the Over the Shoulder Era which they departed from with the modern era(before they brought it back)Now there are thousands upon thousands of fans who don't understand the history and have created a patchwork quilt in their mind cut from iconography from all of the eras that they themselves don't fully understand. RE is just too oversaturated to please everybody because everyone has their own idea of what RE is. The best thing you could do if we were to take this franchise seriously is to do a complete faithful reboot starting with the original game trilogy and do it well. The company controlling the rights to the RE films is a shithouse though and is not interested in that they are just interested in throwing the property around and trying new novelties until something clicks. This is why they are having this direction whiplash we go from Paul Anderson slop to Welcome to Raccoon City slop to pseud elevated horror slop with this Cregger stuff. They are never going to get it right and everyone will keep suffering.

Anderson understood Resident Evil perfectly. His interpretation of what Resident Evil is about, its themes, its tone, is largely faultless and largely forms the foundation for the games going forward. He looked at a character like Wesker, and interpreted him through the lens of "The Outsider" by the band Perfect Circle, and Capcom have since declined to contradict that characterization. I don't think you can really point to anything his films did that is misaligned with the vision for the franchise other than his decision to not make endless status quo cash grabs. Capcom won't let any serious consequences happen because they are worried about painting themselves into a corner. But this is a business decision, not a creative one.
