>start with the shotgun
>The SHOTGUN. A weapon specifically designed and known for its MASSIVE CLOSED RANGE DAMAGE
>every enemy takes 3-6 point blank shots to die
I dont know why boomers enjoy this game so much. I never feel powerful.
>>
>>745224465
you want a shotgun to be stronger than a lightning gun or rocket launcher?
>>
>>745224763
I would prefer if I started with a shitty handgun. That way the shotgun is allowed to be strong. Having it as the started weapon makes no sense.
>>
>fresh spawns take 5 hits with a shotgun to kill
>still a 2 tap with quad as a result
Its crazy how beautifully it worked out from a balance point of view. They lucked into so many amazing gameplay patterns. Quake(World) truly is the best computer game ever made.
>>
Hard disagree. The shotgun was weak but still had a role in the game, an added pistol would feel pointless.
>>
When you first played Quake 1 in 1996, did you have music in the game or not?
>>
I was playing this a couple years ago but lost my save and then just dropped it.
I agree that the enemies were too spongy and that was 99% of the reason I didn't want to play it to where I got again. Also the map design is pretty uninspired.
>>
I'm replaying new chapter with all Runes unlocked. I missed secret item so I would need to replay everything once again to finish secret final boss

>>

I can't remember the layouts of any maps which is a sign of it to me.

>A weapon specifically designed and known for its MASSIVE CLOSED RANGE DAMAGE
That's the double barrel shotgun. The normal shotgun is your medium range gun if you can't spare the rockets or nails.
>>
>>745231018
My lack of memory of Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolfe? does not disqualify it from being inspired. That's not how reality works.
>>
>>745225009
It makes perfect sense. It's your only ranged hitscan weapon with a surprisingly tight spread and no falloff, but it isn't pinpoint accurate, either. So you can damage stuff at range, but not snipe it, yet still do more damage than a pistol. The Q1 shotgun is unironically brilliant design. Probably the best weapon for dealing with Scrags, who love to float just far enough away that nails take too long to travel and rockets are wasted unless you're a 400% SKILLED AIRSHOT GOD. And because of its range, it doesn't become completely useless like Doom's pistol once you get the chaingun.
>>
>>745231392
I don't know man. You could blame hardware limitations, I guess, but to me everything looked the same. Dusk and Amid Evil both did spooky castles better. I don't deny it is an important game but I would much rather play one of the games that it inspired than Quake itself. Map design and spongy enemies being the main reasons why.

>but to me everything looked the same
You are objectively incorrect. Again, yours or my feelings on matters of reality do not mean anything. That you'd prefer Dusk's or Amid Evil's gameplay are other matters. For instance, I personally didn't like Amid Evil's gameplay. I tried, and I bought the game twice over 5 years but refunded both times. I just can't do it. Something about the sorceries feels soft. Dusk I didn't finish, but it's fun. I think I lost interest in episode 2 because it went from spoopy time to Half-Life with the human enemies with firearms, and I was spoiled by how cool the spoopy time was and didn't want to fight human enemies with guns.

I don't remember how far I got before I lost my save, but I didn't even get to the end of the first episode I think because I don't remember fighting a boss. The stuff all looked the same to me and the layouts didn't scream inspired.
>Something about the sorceries feels soft
Some of the weapons feel good, others feel bad. I get that. Personally I only didn't like the base staff and the trident, but liked everything else. Didn't play the DLC though.
As for Dusk, Episode 3 is better than 2. 2 is the weakest over all, but late 2 has some kino later on.

Yeah. But this is a common wish for a lot of stuff.
I wish Doom 64 got more stuff too, for example. I like it more than 2 for a lot of things, specifically level design, sound, weapon feeling, and plenty of other stuff. If they added back missing enemies and had it have more custom stuff, it would be better than Doom 2 in my book.

It's my first time playing this game so I just wanna make sure I'm getting this right. The upgraded shotgun does the same damage as the shotgun, but just puts out more pellets right? So if I want to hit something far away that is a small target, I should just use the weaker small shotgun so I'm not wasting bullets?

That's right. Double barrel for close enemies, single barrel shotgun for farther way enemies or when you want to conserve shells. Unlike Doom's handgun it's always useful and the double barrel isn't a straight upgrade, it's more like Doom's shotgun vs super shotgun.

The pistol in Doom is completely superfluous. The moment you get the shotgun, you never use it again, and its relevance goes into the negatives once you get the chaingun. Quake and Doom Eternal were right for getting rid of it. There's no point in wasting a slot on a weapon that no one will ever use

>>745233362
It's been said before, you could liken it to Penicillin or dynamite. And it goes further than the weapons, the multiplayer maps have deep levels of strategy the developers could never have intended. Dm4 on a surface level seems absolutely retarded; the good armors are in a tiny cramped room with an RL to boot. But it ends up being the weakest section of the map, with players fighting over control of middle and the ability to make spawnfrags by controlling the tiny arena. Of course, once you secure a nice lead, it can be a viable strategy to try and camp the armor room; but if you get flooded out with some well placed pines, you end up on the receiving end of the shit stick, and praying your lead was high enough before you started to camp. 0 chance they theorized these gameplay patterns, but they're genuinely perfect.

it just adds a bit of lag to the combat that feels weird

Other than the fact that a pistol is a point'n'click hitscan weapon akin to a railgun and the Quake shotgun is actually a shotgun. People have made mods in the past to tighten the spread and remove the RNG, the result is horrendously boring.

>pines

>>
>>745224465
>every enemy takes 3-6 point blank shots to die
Doom levels give you a lot of zombies and imps that you murder in an instant. Quake's equivalent would probably be the grunt and the dog which in the base game you only really see in the first level of each episode, I think a lot of people's perception of Quake's enemies being way tankier comes from this and from the worse super shotgun compared to Doom 2.

>I never feel powerful.
Super nailgun shreds through enemies quickly for example. Shotgun and double shotgun are your last resort weapons. Base shotgun weirdly enough is your long range sniping weapon too.

>>745233362
No luck needed. Even before having the levels done, they had the engine done and played around with it a lot. They also played tons of multiplayer at the office, to the point of neglecting the single player a little bit sometimes if I'm not remembering incorrectly. I imagine they tweaked values a lot as they played.
>>
>>745234578
How young are you that you don't know what a Mk 2 grenade is nor that they're called pines, which resulted in people calling all grenades pines? Do you know why getting a kill is called a frag?

i have heard that specific grenade type called a pineapple because it's ribbed for her pleasure. not a pine. the people who call all grenades pines must only exist in your head or the same subset of people who put an unnecessary "n" in "turret." now PIPES? yeah i've heard pipes as in pipebomb used a lot, which quake's grenades look way closer to
>>

Quake's enemies are tankier than Doom's. If something's worth shotgunning, it's worth super shotgunning. The only time you'll want to use the regular shotgun after getting the SSG is if you're trying to hit something far away, since it has a tighter spread.
That's one major, valid criticism of Quake; the regular shotgun and nailgun are made mostly redundant by their upgraded versions, and just waste a slot.

While the nailgun uses half the ammo of the sng, it also does exactly half the damage. The shotgun is incredibly useful in both singleplayer and multiplayer, the nailgun is literally worthless if you have an sng available to you.

>>
>>745235742
I don't think there are any maps in Vanilla quake 1 with both an SNG and the incredibly weak techbase goons (grunts and dogs). Even so, they die easily enough to the regular shotgun that you should probably be saving your nails for tougher enemies, anyways.
>>
>>745235742
You shoot nails at the same speed, they just do more damage. I highly doubt there's any tryhard glorified puzzle map that's crafted so meticulously that you'll end up with severe overkill damage from using your sng and can't just stop shooting a nail or two early to finish off with your boomstick and not have enough ammo to complete the level. That's more Doom territory.
>>
When's the shotgun useful exactly? It's a cope to use it, it's never the best weapon for any job. You use it on knights, ogres and fiends in situations you control because you're not using your actual good ammo, but you're never picking it because it's the best tool for the job.
>>
>>745235563
>Scrag
Whats the difference between holding M1 for 2 seconds with a nailgun and holding it for 1 second with an upgraded nailgun? It's the same shit.
>>
>>745235878
At most of the ranges you're engaging in the vanilla maps, its effectively a railgun. Nails fire at the same velocity as a rocket launcher, they aren't easy to use long range without wasting them.
>>
>>745235878
>When's the shotgun useful exactly?
When engaging enemies at a range where you wouldn't be able to get all of the SSG's pellets to hit it, but you can't or don't want to use your nailgun/SNG. It's a niche use case, but it does come up often enough that the regular shotgun isn't completely useless.
>>
>>745232024
nigga give DUSK another try, it's peak spoop from the middle or so of chapter 2 up until the end
>>
>>745235963
nta but since the nails aren't hitscan you are bound to waste some between the enemy dying and the last nails you shot hitting the wall behind it. With the normal nailgun you'll waste half the nails (unless you are able to determine how many nails you have to shoot to kill the enemy ofc)
>>
>>745235878
Finisher. You fire the nailgun for a bit then switch to the shotgun to finish the enemy, avoiding the problem anons are talking about regarding regular vs super nailgun ammo efficiency.
>>
>>745234514
if you actually hit the scrags they don't take many nails at all. after playing a few ammo-starved maps you pick up the trick.
>>
>>745235878

I'll never understand the "tanky enemies" meme. The shotguns shoot really fast and you switch weapons instantly. In every Quake episode you get nailgun and double barrel by map 2 where you will fight ogres. 14 nails and 2 ssg shots do them in in a few seconds. Doom has spongier enemies by far if you don't have the necessary weapons.

The reason the enemies are tanky is because hardware limitations made it difficult to have many 3d enemies on screen. If you could take out an enemy in a single shotgun shot, the game would become ridicolously easy, because they couldn't spam dozens of enemies at you at once.

Coincidentally however, it's much more fun to fight small packs of tanky enemies than it is to fight large crowds of paper monsters. When you are facing a larger group, fps games become dumber. Instead of trying to dodge a specific attack from a specific enemy, you run around or run in circles without really thinking. Instead of selecting which target to prioritize and aiming, you spray lead in the general direction of the crowd and hope for the best. There's little room for tactics when the behavior of a crowd is too chaotic to be predictable.

A small group of enemies is just more enjoyable and tough to fight. Which is why doom II kiddies are getting filtered by quake

Play any of the new episodes or AD. Vanilla Doom (2) also had fuck all enemies compared to the real map packs.

>and rockets are wasted unless you're a 400% SKILLED AIRSHOT GOD
Rockets trivialize so many encounters with scrags, you should absolutely be using them even if you miss one or two. The best example I can think of is that ambush in Requiem from the new expansion when twenty of those bastards come out from above the map. The splash damage saves you so much ammo in the long run. Even if there's only one or two they're often hovering above something else, it's just free damage.

>The reason the enemies are tanky is because hardware limitations made it difficult to have many 3d enemies on screen.
Even if they had more tech, I prefer it this way because is more chill. Just a checklist of monsters to find and kill. I detested the new Halo CE because near the end, the flood are unlimited. Is so fucking boring and obnoxious.

>rockets are wasted
Quake is really weird in that rockets aren't luxury ammo, they're the most practical choice and your supply is constantly overflowing. Not only are they incredibly effective, but you can spam them with abandon with few consequences. It's actually an interesting choice, they try to balance it with the risk of self damage because enemies all rush you. It does largely work as the SNG is the best default weapon but will absurdly chew through ammo.

>>745236520
Not surprising since TF2 ultimately derives from a quake mod, but it took me a surprising amount of time to realize how much it inherits from q1. The fact that the main damage dealer is basically the vanilla quakeguy does make sense though.

less enemies on screen compared to doom so they had to up the health pool on each, doom was more about combat anyway quake is more about movement, combat is more like a dance where moves and timing count more than point and click
I've always seen the quake levels as more like an obstacle course probably why it was popular for speedruns

Shambler takes less damage from rocket due to explosion falloff. Shambler is so fat that the game treats the direct hit as if you hit him with just the splash damage.

Also, in Quake 2, both shotgun and super shotgun would be useless against heavy armored stroggs.

Yes and no, game gives you more than enough ammo to deal with everyone but keeping big monsters like shambler busy can save lot of ammo because you don't have BFG as fuck off button.

It's way better on Q2 since enemies can kill each other faster.

>Shambler is so fat that the game treats the direct hit as if you hit him with just the splash damage.
Hi Sandy, hope you're doing well. While that's a funny and fitting reason- Shamblers are indeed "plus sized"- the actual reason is the rocket launcher is specifically coded to do half damage to Shamblers alone. The relevant code is in the weapons.qc file, comment included:
>if (other.classname == "monster_shambler")
> {
> damg = damg * 0.5; // mostly immune
The rocket launcher doesn't apply splash damage at all to the target it hits if it's a direct hit, and grenades don't have the half damage stat against Shamblers either despite sharing ammo.

You download the enhanced models and put them inside the mod directory.
Some mods are using their own models though.
This is an example of my modded default id1 directory.
You can find the enhanced models via googling, don't have original links.

TF2 used to share the jank where rocket does full damage on direct hit while grenade direct hit doesn't.
Valve eventually patch the grenade direct hit to always does 100 damage after compfags keep crying about soldier survives with 1 HP because the grenade randomly does 99 damage once.
>>
it's not really meant to be a shotgun, it's not meant to be powerful in comparison to other weapons like typical videogame shotguns are. it's basically the most generic ideal of a battle gun arm. it's a metal tube that spits out explosive force, because you're fighting hulking 7 foot tall eldritch brutes as starter enemies it doesn't do much damage.
>>
>>745246273

iirc they weren't properly playtested. It does give the last episode a substantial bump in difficulty, but still, I feel like:
>Insane movement pattern that makes them difficult to dodge and means they can quickly get in your face
and
>Explodes on death
should have been attributes belonging to two different enemies. Having them on the same enemy makes them worse than those fucking drones in Duke 3d.

>I'll never understand the "tanky enemies" meme.
it's pretty simple. doom is based around a trio of low heath fodder enemies that you kill en masse in between tougher enemies, specifically the imp and shotgunner can be put down with a single center aimed blast from the basic shotgun. in quake the least tanky enemy has as much health as a pinkie and is generally less common outside of early level episodes. the extremely common ogre enemy is like fighting a cacodemon.

Grenade doesn't have specific "if direct hit, deal full damage" code, so a grenade direct hit on shambler is equivalent to an explosion being 3 feet away to a grunt.

Game gives ton of explosive ammo and quad means that any big encounter go down fast assume you time right or learn level design.

That meme is only true in Q2 expansions because everything have shields.

Are the blobs the only slime type enemy in fps? I can't think of anything else like them, which makes me strangely fond of them for that reason alone. They're also the only enemy I can think of that becomes absolute priority #1 to kill the moment you see one, despite not being that strong or tanky

Now that it's leaked they should put out the Quake 4 expansion with Quake 4 remastered.
