It was far from the game "I wanted", but all it needed was a bit more attention in some areas of its plot, and into the ending and it would've been good enough for me. Instead I have to put up with getting excited through ME1 and ME2 for "the parts of ME3 that are good" and just shrug off all the parts that let me down. ME2 I don't have a problem with. I like it just fine, and all the characters are at least a unique flavor to themselves, even if I get a little misty eyed during some loyalty missions. That's the nice part, because in Mass Effect 2 there isn't an objective punishment to letting a character die, thereby skipping their content. If there's someone you don't feel like recruiting or making loyal, other than the first 4, you can just play the trilogy through without it, or add their loss in the Suicide Mission to Shepard's accumulation of trauma that he's dealing with in 3 for the sake of RP. They don't mean that much in terms of War Assets other than Legion or Tali, and Wrex in ME1. But once you get to 3, the design changes and this nasty completionist OCD kicks in. In ME2 the "hidden timer" of plot is there to determine how many squadmates ultimately survive if you keep doing irrelevant shit. In 3, the plot always waits for you to be completionist between each "Chapter" in the game, and that creates an obsession with going and doing the fetch quests, doing boring rounds around the Citadel to turn in anything you missed, and checking the boring Spectre Terminal, and checking your mails etc. I really don't like how they created Dark Patterns in ME3 to make the player feel FOMO by resuming the main plot...

I loved the ambient dialogue in ME3 with the rich human refugee on the Citadel just talking to the uncomfortable batarian and them slowly growing rapport with one another. For like 20 years the batarian was bombarded with anti-human propaganda by his government and now he's here just being talked to without any hate or judgement by a guy in a similar situation.
