What are some good Japanese games to play as someone learning Japanese?

Pokemon unironically.

He can't read…

I'd like to read with kanji since I'm learning those too, which was the first version to include Kanji?

black and white was apparently the first one to have kanji in addition to just pure hiragana/katakana.
I'd probably recommend going further though and maybe play X/Y since the shitty resolution of the DS probably doesn't help with readability of Kanji especially if you are not used to them.
Though if you also want furigana with your kanji you'd have to go as far as legends arceus or scarlet/violet

Why would you learn a language that will soon be gone?
>>

Because there are lots of old games I want to play!

I've played Black and White 1, but never 2, so maybe I'll take this as an opportunity to play those
