I bought this game last night cause it was on sale. I know the game is made by ultra-commies. I don't mind playing/reading something made by people who have politics I (heavily) disagree with. The first 20 minutes I got to play made me laugh and the game seems interesting, politics aside.

My question is this: does it actually explore the differences in ideologies, or is it just "goo goo gaga communism good rest bad"? I can't imagine this game got praised so much if it really just is hardline communist propaganda.

Assuming it IS more than that, is it going to be one of these things where ultimately it reaches the conclusion that communism as a system is good and it's just an issue with the people implementing it? I can't imagine it's that either, because that's the default position communists usually end up adopting. Does it have anything interesting to say?

I guess what I'm trying to find out before I commit to playing it more, is it genuinely good and thought provoking writing, or is it "good for a game"? And is the game aspect actually good or it's basically a VN? (I have seen some people write that it IS basically a VN)
>>
>>745231491
just like the game you wrote a ton of dogshit that nobody thought was good
>>
>>745231491
It doesn't explore ideologies, only mental illnesses because the devs are mentally ill and only have a surface level understanding of any ideology, including their own
>>
>>745231491
>is it genuinely good and thought provoking writing
Sometimes, and when it’s not, it’s at least funny or interesting. There’s a lot of world building you can digest and theorize about.
>>
You’re not going to get a straight answer on /v/, so let me try to be as neutral as possible.

The game’s setting is heavily inspired by post-Cold War Eastern Europe. Your country is a former monarchy that was turned into a Communist dictatorship following a revolution, which was in turn overthrown in a war, and is now occupied by a multinational foreign coalition.

You’re a detective solving the murder of a private security contractor hired by a giant corporation during a dockworkers’ strike. Investigating the murder requires navigating the politics surrounding it.

The game tracks your political alignment based on your responses, branding you a communist, fascist, moralist (centrist), or ultraliberal (ancap). All of these alignments have gameplay benefits and drawbacks. All of them get made fun of by the voices in your head. All of them have NPCs that believe in these ideologies, some sympathetic, others unlikable caricatures. It is strongly implied that you don’t actually care about politics and are just looking for a distraction from how fucked your life is.

Many of the lead writers are self-proclaimed socialists. You can decide whether death of the author should be invoked or not.

Not OP but I don't know much about beyond the memes. I saw an edit of it on /wsg/ recently that was super cool though. Never been much into CRPGs but if I do decide to get into the genre thisll be the first I'll play probably. Currently trying out the demo for traveling at night and think it's decent, but Im mostly there for the preexisting world. What are the best of these types of narrative games?
>>
What compels someone to make a completely insincere OP like this asking a bunch of third world 2016 election tourist to feed him an opinion
>>
>>745232658
Disco Elysium came out long enough ago now that there are already some clones out. Esoteric Ebb is a pretty funny light hearted DnD version of it but the politics aspects of Ebb are abysmal dogshit. Still enjoyed it though. Zero Parades for Dead Spies is okay but is a bit dull. Planescape Torment is a classic walk and talk type game but unfortunately you need to suffer through a lot of crappy ADnD combat sections.
>>
>>745232048
Thanks for the post. It's interesting to have the character have amnesia so you have an excuse to learn about the game's world alongside though I doubt they're the first to do that. This isn't on earth at all, right?

>It is strongly implied that you don’t actually care about politics and are just looking for a distraction from how fucked your life is.
Is there anything stopping you from just saying whatever the other person wants to hear to get information out of them constantly? Or is your guy basically morphing into actually believing in an ideology based on what you say?

>You can decide whether death of the author should be invoked or not.
I assume there's bleedthrough, but that's not a deal breaker for me or anything as long as the game's interesting.

>>745232776
Insincere? Are you just upset because you're a communist or something? I shorted the process because I knew if I didn't I'd get a bunch of "it's commieslop" posts.
>>
>>745231491

Why don't you play it yourself, read the dialogue between the characters and find out?
>>
>>745231491
idk but I do know that every single line being voice acted in a game with only text boxes and no acting is a horrible fucking idea. you read so much faster and end up just cutting off every delivery halfway through. I hate unnecessary voice acting and this game is the worst offender
>>
>>745233005
>Insincere? Are you just upset because you're a communist or something?
And there it is. You came here with an agenda, it's obvious to anyone with a brain.

Every communist in the game is portrayed as a mentally ill freak or loser you fucking moron. You should play the game yourself and form your own opinion instead of believing and espousing recycled garbage from people that never played it themselves.
>>
>>745233005
>Is there anything stopping you from just saying whatever the other person wants to hear to get information out of them constantly?
if someone is blocking your path and you say "I agree you should be blocking my path" you aren't going to make progress. But you can generally be a two-faced slimy weasel if you want. You won't get the special options that only appear if you go really deep into a path, though.
>>
>>745233026
Because I'd rather not spend a bunch of time on the game (I have no idea how long it is) and come out of it thinking "wow it's as infantile as it could be, I should have read a book instead". Seems pretty simple to understand to me.

>>745233142
>there it is
are you unable to read? Third sentence. I was as upfront about it as you can be without making it the main subject.

I don't have an agenda other than to save my time for something interesting. I knew the devs were communists before going in, that's fine. It is a legitimate question to ask how much of their own views are propped up with or without nuance, and it is not fueled by my dislike of communism. So far it sounds like it's not an issue, which is what I wanted to confirm. That's the last thing I have to say on that.
>>
>>745233346
>You won't get the special options that only appear if you go really deep into a path, though.
Now you have me curious on what that means specifically, all right I'll play it. Thanks anon

>>
It doesn't understand what fascism is. It thinks fascism is racist capitalism plus monarchism, which is a common misconception among communists. Once you know they don't know what fascism is, you just learn not to get mad about it The communists are also objectively correct in-game. Moralists (a fairly accurate representation of neoliberals/NATO people) are scum and so are ultraliberals (ancaps). The game is set in a city where the communist revolution got carpet bombed by NATO/the Moralintern and that remains semi-occupied. Jews don't exist in the setting which removes a major obstacle to communism desu

It's also a lot about Harry himself as much as about to setting and its political context
>>
>It thinks fascism is racist capitalism plus monarchism

That's basically what modern fascism is however, or at least that's how modern fascists support
>>

Is honestly say it doesn’t paint communism favorably. The union boss is a slimy fat Jew. I think this game was great. Had a good friend of mine die before I played it and something about the pits of dispair it plays with really hit right at the time, and the hobos reminded me of him a lot. Vibe in that game is impeccable. Very unique game, very cool universe to explore. Definitely or everyone’s cup of tea but a solid 10/10 for me.
>>
>>745234102
arguments on that aside, isn't this game based on post-cold war like the other anon said? if so why should modern fascism be relevant to anything? (I suppose we need to know what is defined as modern in this context)
>>
>>745233924
I honestly don't think Disco Elysium has much replay value, even though there are multiple different personality types.
A lot of the fun is learning about the world and the people in it and solving the mystery. All of that is gone in a replay if you were thorough with your original playthrough and all you have left is hunting for rare new lines of dialog or finding an alternate route to the same place.
>>

yarr matey maybe ye don't mind playin somethin made by people who disagree with ye but ye sure should mind givin' them money for it when there be a much easier way to get it for nothin' at all, and when that be what they want anyway
>>
If they made it entirely about the main character who a previous person also told you is named Harry it would be amazing. The political side of it is boring but Harry's character is one of my favorite depictions of an addict ever, and they have him swayed by various voices in his head in a surprisingly fun way. When they started talking politics every time I legitimately just skipped because who the fuck cares what you think about politics.
>>
>>745232048
Perfect explanation of how it handles politics. It has a clearly better handle on politics than most games and hates all of them. It’s important to remember you main character is an absolute disaster of a drunk who literally binged himself out of his own mind. The politics are a really interesting background that helps build the world without feeling like a lecture, and gives a lot more depth to some of the characters who live in the world. I’ve got a personal attachment to the game but it’s genuinely so so good. My peak depression-comfort game.
>>
>>745234498
its whatever, as far as I know the studio is a zombie anyway, they can put my 10$ (more like 2$ after currency conversion/ steam tax / real taxes) towards commie propanganda if they want to, don't care.
>>
>>745234474
You can draw parallels to post-WWII Germany as well desu. It's both and neither. I really like the setting. Technology is broadly equivalent to maybe the mid-80s or early 90s, so it feels like post-Cold War in that way, but it was a hot war that destroyed communism, not economic maneuvering and subversion. The best way to put the political situation is that the Great Gentile Uprising was done, in-setting, by communists, not fascists.
>>
>>745231491
Just play the game, you bought it and started it already no need to come to here for approval/disapproval experience the thing blind and form your own opinion on it.

>Is there anything stopping you from just saying whatever the other person wants to hear to get information out of them constantly?
keep in mind you aren't playing a self insert, you're playing a super star cop, Tequila Sunset.

He's too sensitive to lie to people like that, it's not how he rolls, but he IS a human can opener, so he doesn't need to manipulate people like that.
You'll find people want to tell you their beliefs if you're willing to listen just like real life, that part is funny and realistic, give anyone a soap box and they'll thank you and go on a weird tangent.

If you want to explore how politics plays a part in people's lives then this is a great game to human watch. You get to see a lot of different strains of communism, the naive academic kind, the haughty arrogant liberal, the delusional anarchistic type, the practical opportunistic socialist type, and the violent communist.

There's fascists and Centrists, you can do it all, the game encourages you to have fun and not be a "boring cop". Or if you feel being a boring cop is fun (it is) then do that as a playthrough, the game is made for replaying. have fun
>>
>>745232048
>All of them have NPCs that believe in these ideologies, some sympathetic, others unlikable caricatures.
Important elaboration: the game has an exclusively socialist perspective. Sympathetic fascist aligned characters are useful idiots, "sympathetic" moralists are there to explain capital's role in marxist theory, and unsympathetic comrades are unsympathetic in the sense of
>the height of socialist praxis is complaining about the moral purity of your fellows in the coffee shop

I don’t think there’s really any characters who are actually fascist. There’s monarchists, there’s anarchists, multiple flavors of communists, drug addicted hobos, indifferent poor villagers, a racist memorabilia collector, corporatists, a racial theorist (who acts as muscle for the union guys), and and old school Soviet style communist, but I wouldn’t say there’s any actual fascist. *maybe* the mercenaries? When they allow Harry to “be fascist” it’s more a part of his psychosis than any actual ideology. It’s been a while since I played it but there really aren’t any actually fascist characters that i remember

This game unironically cured me from my /pol/tard brain by showing how retarded politics look like when put in practice in a real world moved by real people. Instead of fancy books, propaganda, cynic memes, theories and other unreal slop. And this applies to all ideologies, the game holds no punches. That's why the game is mostly hated by people who are too invested in their own ideology no matter what color it is. My only advice is that you should play it with 0 spoilers because the plot is great.
>>
>>745235021

>>
>>745231491
does it matter what political views the developers have, or what actually comes across in the game and what doesn’t? if something like that bothers you, you should think about it before spending money on it. on the other hand, it’s not like the developers are using the money to fund any political campaigns. just because you play a game, watch a movie, or read a book, you shouldn’t immediately start questioning or changing your own views, right? it’s a fictional, made-up story anyway, so who cares? as long as you’re having fun. if you realize halfway through that, for whatever reason, it’s just not for you, then you can simply stop playing
>>
The only skill worth nurturing
>>
>>745235021
Correct. Fascism is kind of a nullity in the setting, except kind of the cryptofascist, which suits me fine. Other reply is correct, it's an error of terminology in some ways
But also. Contextually. How would actual fascism even differentiate itself? It's the Soviet problem where if you're a nationalist socialist you should probably just join the communists.

Once I figured it out I stopped being annoyed by it.
>>
>>745235171

>>
>>745231491
The developers literally thanked Karl Marx but don't worry, you're absolutely not getting a thinly veiled propaganda piece masquerading as a game, no sir. When have leftists ever used media as a deceptive means of ideological proliferation?
>>

Kim is the answer to every RPG, being the perfect moral backbone to your adventure. Without him Harry would be a psycho, and anybody else pestering you about being a decent person would be annoying, yet Kim was too perfectly done, nobody will ever do it like him. He doesn't jabber at you, it's just the subtext that lets you know you're embarrassing him and yourself
>>
>>745235097
Idk, they did a pretty good job showing the complicated feelings behind monarchism disappearing. The main vehicle for that was even very good friends with a big time communist. I won’t disagree that half the writing team was very socialist, they’re French, but I really can’t say the game has a lot to say about fascism directly. It says a lot of bad things about socialist/union types as well, they’re certainly not heroes or good guys in the game. I think it just has a generally pessimistic view on politics. The setting of the game is a destroyed world dealing with a lot of complicated issues, and most people are just depressed and defeated by the reality of their city than they are super ideologically motivated. The union boss is clearly an opportunitistic power hungry fat cat masquerading as a socialist, and the actual Soviet character at the end of the game is just an empty husk of what he was because he saw what he believed in ripped to shreds. He doesn’t even do what he does out of ideology but spite for the world. It’s far more esoteric than socialist.
>>
>>745231491
Just play the fucking game and you'll find out.

Quick answer: the game is pretty nuanced and it doesn't feel like it was written by narrow minded woke retards at all, it goes out of its way to avoid doing a "my side good, your side bad". It's also more psychological and more about the people than the ideologies themselves. If you want me to elaborate on that, I won't. Play the fucking game and you'll understand.
>>
>>745235050

Communism is a metaphor for your cocaine addiction arc.

You felt strong and invincible, like you could take on the world, and you did. it felt like your prime motivator. But now the cocaine is gone, and your past your prime and even if you embraced the cocaine again you could never pull off what you did before because your body is too destroyed and now leashed by a complex bureaucracy.
>>
>>745235539
You tranny leftist psychopath. Everyone slightly right of center in the game is either an irredeemable racist or corporate bootlicker who either way only want to harm others at their own self-interest. Meanwhile the communists are all kind, hecking wholesomerino naive freedom fighters whose only fault was being too good for this rotten world. The moral asymmetry between the two politics is brutally overt, but since DE's fanbase is entirely composed of lefty faggots who live and breathe the agenda it's pushing, that discrepancy is either unnoticed or deliberately ignored.
>>
>>745235861
I genuinely do not understand how you come to that conclusion if you’ve ever actually played the game.
>>
>>745233142
Come on. When communists are portrayed negatively in the game its almost always on the grounds of being unrealistic idealists, or their heart is in the right place but theyre just misguided and follow bad leaders- this is in contrast to fascists being almost exclusively portrayed as mean-spirited caricatures with no redeeming qualities or ideas. I love the game and think its a masterpiece and OP should just close this thread immediately and play it, but you can't act like the author is coming from a neutral place when it comes to the political aspects
>>

It matters, in the sense that I'm not interested if it's garbage. If it's low level stuff that would only convince a 15 year old starting to have political opinions, pass. If not, I'm fine with reading. I'm not afraid of being converted, I've heard a ton of the points. I want to know if the writing / plot is good quality despite the (or lack of) communism jerking off session.

It's about Harry and Kim, and the way you make them interact and the way certain parts make you feel and think.

Not even remotely true. The entire union is portrayed as sleazy liars and murderers, gang members, and opportunists who don’t believe in anything other than brute force. There are no explicitly fascist characters in the game, one “stupid racist”, one “hidden racist” and one “hyper intelligent ultra racist” who works for the union. DE does not concern itself with fairly or accurately representing any ideologies as their inherit corruptibility in the face of parapraxis is the point as it ties with Harry's own lived experiences. There are no Fascists as one would understand it, just as there are no Communists or Liberals - their abject failure as frameworks in the face of reality is what's examined throughout the game and the lesson you should take out. But you know that already, and I know you do so here I am wasting my time. What should be understood by anyone unfamiliar with the game is that the objective isn't to present leftist ideology through a lens of accuracy or integrity, but rather one of eschatological moral washing: the world is far too corrupt and oppressive to let the good guys win, and so you wallow in the morally post-apocalyptic misery that's Revachol with no real compromise to virtue or truth - a perfect embodiment of the modern leftist state of mind. Either way, as I said earlier, this is known: therefore all that's left is for you to kill youself.

I suppose you could say Fascism died in 1945, fair, but then it's not really the game's fault for depicting the farce as it is.

Well in that case carry on then.

Commies are the only people capable of critiquing all political ideologies including their own. They’re the only people you can trust to create this game because communists argue with eathothwr about the minutae of communism all the time. A fascist or a liberal aren’t capable of that level of self critique.

I wouldn't call it propaganda, it doesn't try to preach to you. The one thing that really gives away the devs' ideological leanings is that a lot of common sense reasonable dialogue options are flagged as communist, I was going for a fascist playthrough but still somehow got the commie achievement first, but without the achievement popping I wouldn't even know that.

well duh, because communist views are common sense, everyone would agree were it not for post cold war propaganda

>I've never understood how anyone could oppose Mormonism. Do they enjoy being Satan's slaves?

The problem with Marxism is that it is a Jewish pseudoscience invented by the son of a rabbi. Wherever this crap has been applied, it has served as a justification for the destruction of the traditions and peoples of the conquered countries, in almost every instance.
It's literally an ideology for the destruction of nations, under the pretext of liberating the oppressed people (in practice, it makes the people even more oppressed, now by a new elite).

If capitalism bothers you, then the right thing to do is to understand what capitalism really is, which has nothing to do with neurotic Marxist descriptions.
Capitalism is the entire economic system. If your country is a mess, and you say, "It’s capitalism's fault!", it’s the same as finding a garden in shambles and saying, “It's the ecology’s fault!".
Once you’ve identified objective problems within capitalism, you can start proposing solutions. If you think the entire system is rotten, then you'll have to invent a system just as complex as it is. One that will basically replace everything (from wage payments to money printing, from the logic of exports to financing, etc.), and the chances that you'll simply cause an economic disaster, leading to the deaths of millions are enormous.
Besides, not every problem is economic. There are other problems as well, such as shitty political and cultural institutions, among many other factors that screw up countries.

It doesn't try to make any ideology look any better or worse than the other.
The focus of the game is on the main character and his emotional distress.
The objective of the game is to recover the main character's identity and mold it as you want, the scenarios and events you will see through the game will change based on it and your dice rolls.
Every single ideology will be presented in a satirical or pessimist way because they are always something the MC is using to cope with his depression.

>the game is pretty nuanced and it doesn't feel like it was written by narrow minded woke retards at all

Why is the racist driver explicitly called racist and painted as ugly and stupid?
Why is the racist nigger two screens to the right none of those things?
>>
>>745238707
You're just setting up a framework to allow for an authoritarian theocracy. I see it in your critique of political and cultural institutions. Traditions must be forced to change, as some are detrimental to the welfare of other human beings, like slavery and coerced body modification.

The government is essentially a corporation, it does not “care” nor does it act for any reason but for the sake of profit and its own survival. Under communism a citizen’s individuality is stripped away, offered up, and judged on basis of its utility to the “whole,” the super corporation that actively works to erase any and all threats to its power including tradition, faith, property, innovation, culture, technology, family, and so on. If you put your faith in government you are slave cattle regardless of what form it takes

>>745238707
I see you're trying to argue that some people are just very stupid and pretend to be an idiot as an example. Scientific Socialism wasn't invented by Karl Marx and in fact it traces its origins to ancient Greece and Rome. Moreover capitalism isn't some eternal thing but rather started in the Netherlands in the 16th century, and yes many Jews were involved. Also comparing Marxism to religious texts is just stupid because the former can be empirically tested.

>tradition, faith, culture, family
Famously preserved under capitalism.

This is really fucking stupid. A corporation isn't a natural entity but rather a legal category that in many jurisdictions has duties such as fiduciary duty. And even if we accepted this framing who owns the corporation would be a crucial variable.
>>
>>745239697
How ironic. Now apply the logic you just used
>>
>>745239981
Okay so if you're going to be ruled by a corporation anyway would you want to have a say in it? Or are you one of those guys that wants to abolish the police?
But I shouldn't entertain your questions. Your point isn't to seriously suggest chief Swamplord 450 BC was a corporation, but rather to misapply labels to the point that thinking becomes impossible.

It explores "ideologies" insofar as they function as coping mechanism for the mentally broken protagonist. It has a noticeable left wing bias, but even if you choose all the communist dialogue options, a lot of them boil down to Harry saying a lot of really stupid shit and getting told to shut up. The stupidity of a cop spouting revolutionary rhetoric is pointed out on more than one occasion. There is no ideology in the game that won't end up sounding utterly retarded coming out of Harry's mouth.
