>Jacob Navok, director of business development at Square Enix from 2010 to 2015, commented on the nature of video game pricing. "Competition between publishers is what drives pricing pressure, not competition between digital stores," he says.

>"This is because publishers set pricing on digital stores."

>The likes of Epic Games Store and Steam having to compete makes life better for developers, because their cuts improve - hypothetically, at least - and on digital storefronts, the basement continually lowers for many releases.

>"You can see how the floor moves downward," he says, showing a chart of Final Fantasy 16's pricing on Valve's platform as an example. (https://x.com/JNavok/status/2087715935226380319)

>"It moves downward because as the title competes with other titles, it gains a natural downward pressure."

>His stance is that Sony going fully digital through the PS Store adds another layer, because it'll force publishers to be more wary of their libraries and each other.

>"The more the PlayStation Store becomes digital only, the greater this trend will accelerate,"

>"You will see more sales and dynamic pricing similar to Steam because publishers will compete among themselves to a greater extent."

So the only reason Sony is doing this is because Americans are buying digitally? Even your attempts to insult America come with the premise that your third world countries don't matter. Incredible small dick energy.
>>
>>745371734
>"You can see how the floor moves downward," he says, showing a chart of Final Fantasy 16's pricing on Valve's platform as an example.
Why would he cite PC as an example at all when PC has access to free transferal of platforms so competition has no financial barrier and the ability to generate keys wholesale so that a third-party market can exist to sell these keys? Neither of these exist on consoles. Consoles require a minimum $500 up front charge just to change to another platform and the only ones able to generate keys are Sony themselves.

>"It moves downward because as the title competes with other titles, it gains a natural downward pressure."
Except half the reason prices compete in the first place is because physical prices go down and they have to deal with the physical prices being so low, not other titles.

>digital will make games $10 cheaper than their physical version!
>making games $70 instead of $60 will mean games will released finished, no more DLC!

All bullshit. All lies. At the end of the day the only thing being "cheaper" is developer costs, the consumer gets screwed.
>>
>>745371734
They can make their games cheaper now. Nothing is stopping them.
>>
>>745371734
At any point until now, they could have made the games cheaper on the playstation store. But they didnt. Anyone saying it'll magically get better with no disc's is a dick sucking corpo faggot.
>>
Many video game developers expressed the opinion that eliminating disc costs and brick & mortar retail stores in the early 2010s, while STILL being able to maintain the 60$ price without gamers protesting, was borderline robbery. They got away with it and they didn't think they'd be able to.

But then again, SE seems very unique in the fact, that it has always been exclusively staffed by the mentally disabled.

And this from a former executive of one of the most retarded companies on the planet?
>>
>>745373353
And that's 100% correct. PC games go on sales that often remove 80% or more of the original price.
>>
>>745376973

A lot of people forget that Steam technically has competition. Epic, GoG, Itch.io and a dozen other DL sites and meme launchers exist and are all competing with Steam for a slice of their userbase.
Plus Steam competes against one the ultimate enemies of the free market: piracy. It's hard to beat a pricetag of zero.

Sony has no such competition, and now, never will.

Its a shame that physical games are going away but it really only effects autistic collectors who are in it for the love of the game such as myself. And I'm not even mad I'm glad I don't need to buy another shelf.

Nobody is buying a physical video game to "play it" in the big 26. You are buying them for aesthetic value (i love the little boxes of green, blue, red, black, white etc) and as a weird gambling investment.

>Sony killing PlayStation discs will make PS Store cheaper, former Square Enix financial exec says
>>
https://pluralistic.net/2026/01/21/cod-marxism/#wannamaker-slain
>Personalized pricing, of course, is the polite euphemism for surveillance pricing, which is when a company spies on you in order to figure out how much they can get away with charging you (or how little they can get away with paying you).
>It's a weird form of cod-Marxism, whose tenet is "From each according to their desperation; to each according to their vulnerability." Surveillance pricing advocates say that this is "efficient" because they can use surveillance data to offer you discounts, too – like, say you rock up to an airline ticket counter 45 minutes before takeoff and they can use surveillance data to know that you won't take their last empty seat for $200, but you would fly in it for $100, you could get that seat for cheap.
>This is, of course, nonsense. Airlines don't sell off cheap seats like bakeries discounting their day-olds – they jack up the price of a last-minute journey to farcical heights.
>Google also claims that it will only use its surveillance pricing facility to offer discounts, and not to extract premiums. As Stoller points out, there's a well-developed playbook for making premiums look like discounts, which is easy to see in the health industry. As Stoller says, the list price for an MRI is $8,000, but your insurer gets a $6000 "discount" and actually pays $1970, sticking you with a $30 co-pay. The $8000 is a fake number, and so is the $6000 – the only real price is the $30 you're paying.

What Capcom's is doing is unique and there is a huge question mark about its long term viability. They churn out very similar built games (small scale 3D person action titles) in tandem with remakes of their older games in a similar manner. Using a specific engine they custom made for it. The last bit is their games get very cheap very fast and pretty much sale all year around with a sizeable back catalog which is dirt cheap now.
Since most of their income comes from the Resident Evil franchise there comes the question what will happen if
A, people get bored with it
B, they run out of old games to remake
C, everyone already owns the back catalog on multiple platforms now
The moment they can't afford the race to the bargain bin, the moment RE stumbles their entire portfolio is at risk.

>>745383262
>Nobody is buying a physical video game to "play it" in the big 26.
I do. I keep a few games I love but otherwise I buy them for cheap and sell them so I have money for other things. Killing physical is actually hurting my wallet and I don't even begin on delistings or various regional restrictions I could get around by using physical.
>>
>>745371763
Nonsense.
Epic claimed the same and when ff7re was exclusive to their store, it was the first ever 79,99 euro game on pc
>>
>>745379342
How was your coma? PC gaming hasn't had steep discounts for roughly a decade. Developers on Steam used to run 75% discounts and then slash it to 90% on flash sales. Now when summer sales come around, everthing is 10%-25% off with very few games breaching 50%. It's been a talking point for many years that many games never even go on sale at all.

If prices go down then I'm fine with dropping physical media. But they won't.
>>
>>745371734
Yeah, so games are going to be 80$ instead of 100$ now
>>
>>745399861
You're missing the hustle. Games will actually cost $150, but since the companies don't have to pay the cost of physical media any more, so the price will drop to $115. Aren't you glad that you get to save some money on your vidya, Anon?

>new playstation hardware going to be subsidized by sony and will be affordable even for monkeys living in corrugated sheet huts with dirt floors
>playstation store going to have better deals than steam
>once in a lifetime single player cinematic experiences exclusive to sony every year
sony doesn't have to pretend anymore...
>>
>>745401327
You are never going to see it, it was totally going to happen but you see inflation and increasing costs of electricity due to AI boom stopped it.
SONY executives were truly crying their eyes out because they couldnt pass the savings on to the consumer.
>>
>>745371734
Yeah right, that's what they always said and then it gets 4 bucks cheaper for 3 months after which they increase the price again due to games getting so darn expensive to develop!
(Even though tools are better than ever, even though they outsource to India, even though AI makes some stuff cheaper, and they pay way too much money for assets.)

Selling on steam has a lower ROI because steam takes a larger cut of every single copy sold than a disk manufacturer and retailer does. Therefore we can only expect prices to rise, not fall.
>>
>>745371734
Who believes this? We already heard that digital games should have cost less because they didn't have to produce the disc and the case.

where have i heard that one before
oh yeah
tim the cuck sweeny said the same thing about the 30% store cut and yet games are way more expensive now

>I still went to stores buying food, appliances etc

>cheaper
>financial exec

I don't have a reaction image for this.
>>
He's right that pressure from different stores cause prices to go down but he misses the goddamn point of how physical games has more pressure due to the vast variety of retailers competing with each other which is how you can find physical games cheaper than digital most of the time. By removing physical games from distribution it just means less overall competition and prices will be static forever.

The only thing sadder than the Dems puppetting the corpse of Joe Biden as presidential candidate...
is the Reps endlessly digging up the corpse of Biden as a deflection tactic for the misbehaviours of their own geriatric deranged president

It's a country of 300,000,000,000 people and somehow neither party can get a normal, sane, compus mentus, boring, 30-50 year old, white dude in office

USA needs mandatory presidency mental acuity tests held before the presidential debate, with randomised answers, so doddering old fucks can't be coached

They also need preferential voting, and maybe even term limits for people over 80

I'm sick of seeing the helm of the US world hegemony steered by dudes who couldn't steer a mobility scooter.

I don't trust the federal or local government, I'll totally trust the Sony Coeöort.
>>
>>745371734
there won't be any incentive to make it cheaper when it's a closed garden. if snoys allowed steam, gog, epic, microsoft and nintendo to set their stores as well then there would be one.
