How do you feel about games that give you a large range of options? Some games just give options for different equipment and others let you have a wide range of control in not just how you approach problems, but in how much gear impacts you, and even what characters live or die.
How much do things like this matter to you, or if youre working on a game, fangame or mod, how important do you think they are?
I know there are some local devs making games and fangames that might have some input of their own.
>>
I don't really think too much of it when equipment doesn't matter, other than finding it a bit of a pain I guess dealing with upgrades since they are "needed" but don't feel important at that time, but when it matters, or when choices actually impact something like the game remembering your actions at some point, it stands out a lot. It feels like the game remembering "the little things" like how we used to have TECHNOLOGY threads.
Undertale gets a lot of flak these days what with the autism in its fanbase and the contrarianism everywhere of course, but it felt like a game that was made up of "the little things", though it's equipment didn't really matter, it felt good that the game actually remembered some of your choices.

I feel like games pushing for small inconsequential details has fallen by the wayside more and more. it still happens but it feels like it was much more prominent in the mid 2000's

>How do you feel about games that give you a large range of options? Some games just give options for different equipment and others let you have a wide range of control in not just how you approach problems, but in how much gear impacts you, and even what characters live or die.
I theory more options are always good, in practice I rather have fewer options but that are much more impactful, I don't want an action game that gives me 10 different weapons if all the weapons are only slightly different from each other, give me 3 distinctive weapons and give me a reason to use those weapons in the form of enemy variety and level design.
>How much do things like this matter to you, or if you are working on a game, fangame or mod, how important do you think they are?
Variety is all in when it comes to games, there's a reason so many souls clones fails when the souls series succeeds, despite what people say they aren't repetitive and the games are constantly giving you new enemies and bosses with different behaviors, something that is much rarer in the clones which usually have you facing the same enemy from beginning to end.

When a game dumps too many options I find myself getting choice paralysis and information overload. I find myself unable to pay attention to or comprehend any of it, my eyes just glaze over and it becomes a haze.

I like having choice, but there is such a thing as too much.

>I don't really think too much of it when equipment doesn't matter, other than finding it a bit of a pain I guess dealing with upgrades since they are "needed" but don't feel important at that time
I like the thing modern metroidvanias do where optional equipment usually comes in the form of items that change or give you a new mechanic in exchange for some resource, like the charms in Hollow Knight or the jades in Nine Sols, its a good way to add builds into the game without making certain equipment obsolete, just because the item with the unique effect has much weaker stats than an item you get later on that has no special effects (which happens a lot in RPGs and happens in Castlevania SoTN)

>Undertale gets a lot of flak these days what with the autism in its fanbase and the contrarianism everywhere of course, but it felt like a game that was made up of "the little things", though it's equipment didn't really matter
Equipment in Undertale actually matters, at least in pacifist it does because your Defense doesn't scale with anything else while the enemy damage keeps increasing, yeah the equipment progression is super lineal and boring, but it does matter a bit

I think I agree, but I think there's an allure to small systems that aren't overbearing on the experience that feel like the things you do in a game matter. it feels like an extention of "attention to detail" when that happens.

I can see that, though I felt like eldenrings variety was "unexiting" in the ways that dark souls 1 and demons souls were for me. then again I think that's largely because the exploration felt more meaningful in that and kings field 4 which I'd played right before hand.

I thinking in the context of a combat system, I still think most if not all small choices in games should come with some impact on the gameplay, but I can appreciate an small choice that just changes a single line of dialogue of an NPC later on in the game, that is cool, the game recognizing that you made that choice.

I think that might be because Elden Ring is much longer, one problem that I do have with fromsoft games is that they don't encourage you to change weapons, in fact the upgrade system make it feels like they do the opposite, so you end up with this massive arsenal that you can't use because changing weapons is super expensive and if you want to try out other weapons you will have to farm for upgrade materials, this problems is much worse when the game is that long. In theory Elden Ring has a massive variety of weapons but in practice you'll only use like 3 for an entire playthrough

that's a very fair point. Demons souls for example is honestly not THAT long of a game at all. kings field 4 is a bit longer but you don't need to really mess with the little known upgrade systems in it, so it's more about the adventure. Dark souls 1 suffers from it some, but I'd say with how much people replay it, it shows that it's not too long to really make it an issue

yeah that type of stuff, even in games that only do a tiny bit of it really makes me stop and say "woah neato". I mentioned in another post but while undertale is contentious for some people on this board, I think that kind of stuff is what caught a good number of peoples attention about it in the first place. coming in a time period when people were advertising games as "YOUR CHOICES MATTER!" when they didn't even a little. hell, in the grand scheme of things, mass effect 3 wasn't too long before it, I think the demo was released around then.

>Dark souls 1 suffers from it some, but I'd say with how much people replay it, it shows that it's not too long to really make it an issue
Dark souls 1 is "short" and came out a more than a decade ago, people who replay it already have an idea of what weapon they are going to use before playing the game, that being said DS1 gave you a shitton of upgrade materials because you were expected to upgrade your armor too, so upgrading other weapons besides your main ones was a valid choice that didn't involve farming.

For all the flaws people might think Undertale has, to this day its one of the few games that offers an entirely different experience based on your choices, beyond the genocide route having an completely different narrative and bosses, the neutral route also has a lot of subtle changes, and I think the neutral ending variations are underrated, I was disappointed when I played UTY and found out the game has no neutral ending variants, I wonder if other fangames will follow that path or if they will do something similar to UT.

that makes sense, and when you get better at the game, I imagine a lot of people don't need to necessarily bother with the armor upgrades.
I do remember demons souls had one specific upgrade item that was a whore to get though and there was the whole meme about the crystal geckos though.

it's hard calling it underrated since so many people are big into the games, but I feel like a lot of the fans miss the forest for the trees and just don't recognize the actual virtues of the game. Fans more of the culture around it instead of the actual good things it did.

For me the problem is that the fans focus too much in the pacifist and genocide routes, with those becoming the only interpretations of the game, ignoring everything in between.

Yeah, and thats how we end up with skeletonwank which dominated the fangame scene for almost a decade, I would count AUs as a separate thing but they eventually devolve into skeletonwank too.
>>
>>745503381
Its pretty funny how much UT contrasts with The Walking Dead on that front. Both came out around the same time and both had a central focus on choice, but TWD only has the illusion of choice, which is completely destroyed when you replay it. Meanwhile UT only reveals how player driven it is during replays. This is made even worse by one being an indie pixel game made by the homestuck composer while the other is a triple a game based on a multi million dollar comic ip.

yeah I've definitely seen a lot of that so I know what you mean. it's exhausting in a way and I think it makes your disspointment with the neutral in uty more relatable (even though what happens is cool, it shouldn't be how every neutral ending goes).

I'm surprised Telltale's The Walking Dead lasted as long as it did, by the start of Season 2 the illusion of choice should have been entirely shattered even if the game gave you multiple endings that were all very distinctive, then season 3 dropped and all those endings lead to the exact same point, somehow the games got a fourth season

The answer lies in UT's sequel. Scope, real choice gets a lot harder to implement when you start increasing the scope. At a AAA scale it simply isn't feasible. Of course there's nothing stopping those big studios from making smaller, more content dense games, but they simply choose not to.
>>
>>745505319
well heres a question, was the walking dead really big enough to say it was too big in scope to do it? I feel like it really wasn't honestly.
>>
>>745505007
>(even though what happens is cool, it shouldn't be how every neutral ending goes).
UTY's neutral is really cool, but it doesn't feel like an ending, its basically telling you to go back and replay the game in pacifist or genocide, it would have been cool if you could get a different neutral ending if you replayed the route after beating Flowey, something like actually fighting Asgore, they could have reused his fight from the base game.
>I'd be curious what the actual ratio of people into skeletonwank compared to people that played the game would be. It could be nothing special but I wonder
The skeleton fandom is something special, on one hand they must have some of the highest concentration of "fans" that have never played the games, on the other they have the highest amount of fangame devs and its not even close, some of those Sans fights have an insane production value
To get things back into the topic, I wonder how you could make a genocide route in which equipment matters, since you having overpowered stats makes is the point of the route, I guess the game would have to be built with in mind with equipment that doesn't change your stats, in UT's geno route the only items that matters are the consumables (and the cloudy glasses since they give you some resistance against Sans's attacks)
>>
>>745505409
The first TWD game is around 13 hours long, and Telltale wasn't that big when they first made the game, at least as far as I know, the next games have less excuses tho, they were just being lazy by adapting expensive ips instead of making more condensed games
>>
>>745505602
>it would have been cool if you could get a different neutral ending if you replayed the route after beating Flowey, something like actually fighting Asgore, they could have reused his fight from the base game.
I could see that, if flowey already knows how things are going to go then why wouldn't he shift things up or let it play out a little more to see what happens. maybe he'd take martlet out off screen, as much as I hate that, in order to change Clovers course.
>The skeleton fandom is something special, on one hand they must have some of the highest concentration of "fans" that have never played the games, on the other they have the highest amount of fangame devs and its not even close, some of those Sans fights have an insane production value
honestly mind boggling to think about. I feel like the number of people who haven't played has to be high like you said because their characterizations are so far beyond what is actually covered in UT, but I think a lot of them fall into it really hard from reading just fics or playing only fangames.
>To get things back into the topic, I wonder how you could make a genocide route in which equipment matters, since you having overpowered stats makes is the point of the route,
giving equipment that does "special things" feels like the easy way out but it would probably do some good.
maybe make more fights that are actual challenges and make some equipment that you have to jump through hoops to help you with those? like equipment that genuinely reduces the number of rounds it takes to beat the fight on average?

The episodic release artificially increases the scope. Even if it was only 13 hours total, it was really a bunch of tiny games that all had to begin the same way, creating the same problem as the start of season two.

>I was thinking about making DEF be percentage based instead of just a flat number. That way all items would scale with damage received.
You could have both, sort of like "DR" and "DT" in Fallout New Vegas, most items give you a flat bonus in defense and are intended to be used in most playthroughs while the items that give you percentage DEF are rarer and are mostly useful in a genocide route or high LV neutral, something that gives you 10% extra DEF when your DEF is 9 isn't that useful compared to an item that gives you 5 extra DEF
>>
>>745506320
DEF is weak anyways. Its something like 1/8 of the DEF number is subtracted from damage.

Anyways, percentage would also scale down with attacks. 50% damage reduction is going to take 25 points off a 50 point attack, but only 5 off a ten point attack.
>>
>>745506491
interesting on the 1/8, but I guess I'm more thinking that a 50 percent reduction becomes insanely powerful when the numbers get higher.

Also for some added inspiration, I think terraria/calamity had some decent takes on it. I think the number of the defence was the actual amount of damage being reduced before modifiers for and against your favor.

>Even if it was only 13 hours total, it was really a bunch of tiny games that all had to begin the same way, creating the same problem as the start of season two.
Every new game pretty much reset all your choices from the previous one within the first hour, Telltale games should have never received sequels, maybe that way the endings would have been allowed to be different from each other

The answer is, I don't care about either multitudes of options or a lack of them. Slay the princess has a ton of routes, Kamidori has 3 main routes and Totono has a single choice of your ending and all of them are good for it. Nioh has a shitton of equipment slots but all of them are interchangeable, don't do anything and may have not been there at all, Diablo 3 has mostly the same problem, but it has legendaries which may nudge you into changing your build to something completely different and Grim Dawn has a ton of equipment slots so you could have one or a couple of build-defining items and the rest are there for you to build your defenses depending on what items drop for you. I could continue with classes, skills and maybe something else. Each option needs to be suited to its own game.

>>
>>745506474
DR and DT are too confusing. People never know what either actually does unless another player sits them down and explains it to them. Either on its own is fine, but together they become a confusing mess.

>>745506614
But the attacks also become more powerful. If the player's HP increases along with levels, then the armor should feel just as strong as when you first got it.

>>745506750
It was just an example. It could just as easily be 10% or 20%.
>>
>>745505775
>giving equipment that does "special things" feels like the easy way out but it would probably do some good.
Actually making equipment with special effects is harder because you have to be careful to not make it too weak or too powerful, otherwise the player will always use the same equipment, case in point Hollow Knight, the game has tons of "charms" (equipable items with different effects) you have a limited amount of charms you can equip, some take more slots than others, the problem here begins with the fact that the most powerful build you can make with the charms is also the most basic one, the charms with special effects like summoning minions that help you in fight or giving the player a damaging aura are useless compared to the charm that increases you melee damage, the one that increases your magic damage and the one that increases the range of your attacks.
If any dev here wants to implement a system like that, be careful with the "boring" equipment, it might outshine the one with special effects.
>>
>>745507304
>DR and DT are too confusing. People never know what either actually does unless another player sits them down and explains it to them.
Are they? both are subtractions, one based on a flat number and the other based on a percentage, like the other guy said, Calamity and Terraria also do this, only some effects give you percentage based resistance but it exists alongside the flat defense provided by armor
>>
>>745507448
With UT fangames, it might be better to leave the "boring" option as is, but then have characters mock the player for being boring.
>>
>>745505998
In my case I was thinking of just not including DEF items or adding very few of them, maybe making it so they only increase DEF under specific conditions, or making them too weak to be relevant for a genocide route, I'm trying to not add equipment that just gives stat increases
>>
>>745508732
>With UT fangames, it might be better to leave the "boring" option as is, but then have characters mock the player for being boring.
Actually DR has a way to deal with this, since the game has no charm slots like Hollow Knight and similar games, the "resource" that must be exchanged is different, in Deltarune all equipment increases your stats, but the equipment with special effects give you less stat increases than the rest, this works well with defense items since some special effects like larger graze area are usually better than having marginally more DEF, but it falls flat with weapons, since the only stat that actually matter is magic because Susie is the only real damage dealer in the party, the weapon with the highest magic stat is always the best
>>
>>745508732
That sounds like something you could add in an update in case you accidentally give the player the chance to make a boring but powerful build, nerfing items in a singleplayer game is extremely lame, so this is a more adequate "solution"

Nta, but I actually really like branching dialogue and many choices in rpgs.
>>
>>745513347
fallout 4 didn't really do branching dialogue very well. it generally gave you 3-4 dialogue options that meant the same thing and gave you only a tiny variation of the same response.
utter travesty considering where the series came from.

Ok, but fire gf hand holding. That redeems it.

The idea of the war taking placing like 50 years ago and every monster acting as if it were a legendary event from a long lost era is kind of funny
>>
>>745514237
Maybe they're trying to imply purple was the first to fall. Its still wrong since Chara fell hundreds of years after the war, but that's less wrong than the tital imprisonment onky being a few decades.

>>745513104
It could work if it were some lost human from before Chara. I don't think it is, but you know.

it all makes sense now. the person who was with that monster in the image sought out an opening to the mountain for 10 years, and finally found it, starting

>Maybe they're trying to imply purple was the first to fall. Its still wrong since Chara fell hundreds of years after the war, but that's less wrong than the tital imprisonment onky being a few decades.
It could work, if it weren't for the fact that the ruins already exist in the game, which contradicts what the promo image says, this all reminds me of that old as fuck "Undertale Orange" fangame that had one mural in the ruins saying something along the lines of "Humans can't use magic, this is one of the reasons why the war started" when the murals at waterfall state that 7 human magicians were the ones who created the barrier.

Hello everyone it's the Martlet Drawanon here!
It's been quite some time, slowly working on requests when I could.
But I can finally share a handful of the completed requests from the list!

Here's the completed requests for your viewing.

Valravn, aka Zenith Martlet who ended up in the pacifist timeline, and met pacifist Clover from an anon's fic.
I'm not quite sure if the anon who came up with Valravn was the one who made the requests or another anon.
The requests were a bit vague, so I just compiled them all, and drew something that included some of the ideas in some fashion.
So here she is wearing tight appealing beach wear.
You can view it here:

Nude alt with Valravn's breasts out can be seen here:

Bedo from Undertale Naranja about to engage in some explicit physical activity with the viewer.
This is my first time ever drawing Bedo, and I enjoyed my time drawing her.
You can view it here:

Pregnant Wiki.
I got a fair amount of requests asking for this.
It was nice to draw her again, and experiment a bit when drawing the image.

I'm still working on more requests from the list I got, but feel free to send any ideas in mind my way!

>The ruins
The ruins became the ruins shortly after Chara fell. They were abandoned and fell into ruin when everyone moved to New Home. If its been a number of years since Chara died, then it could work.

>The mural
I could see there being differing accounts of why the war started, so I give it a pass.

Amazing stuff as always, and glad to see you again.
Do you think you can draw an image that has bird Val and bird Clover interacting in some way.
If not that, how about Martlet being motherly towards bird Clover. It would also be interesting to see you draw Zenith Martlet being motherly to Zenith bird Clover.

Maybe the human starts off super strong and most spares are essentially you convincing monsters that fighting you isn't worth it.

Then the final boss is another human, one who took a boss monster's soul, coming to remove you so the monsters can't have your soul.

The human comes from the surface to take down the main character? I misread that and I thought you meant the other human was already there, I think it could work actually, like a different human trying to take advantage of the situation to become the king of monsters, "better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven"

He could just go around killing monsters to gain LV but I guess that would draw too much attention or he has some personal code that involves not killing those that are below him, which includes most of the monster species
Maaybe he has formed his own cult or personal army of monsters to taken down Asgore, and the protag's gf is among them
>>
>>745515393
Good to see you again.
Could you draw something like a megaman stage select screen with Clover in the middle, and to his left and right are icons of Martlet and Ceroba, and he has to choose which one he wants to be his mum.
>>
>>745517353
>He could just go around killing monsters to gain LV but I guess that would draw too much attention or he has some personal code that involves not killing those that are below him, which includes most of the monster species
Or maybe he just thinks that if he went around killing everyone that he'd end up with no one to rule.

>and the protag's gf is among them
Going with Hokuto Ken logic, she's against them. I was thinking the villain is hounding the MC because he views him as competition.

I love having a wide range of options, but the main things you want to avoid are redundancy and poor balancing. For an example of redundancy, Hollow Knight has two charms which both serve only to extend weapon reach. Silksong condensed this into a single one, which is usually the better choice (the exception is in games where you have a fuckton of equipment like Nioh). A case of balancing issues would be Elden Ring, where most buffs and talismans amount to "make number bigger in X way" rather than much of a complex playstyle change, so too many builds center around making attacks hit very hard rather than having much of an effect on core playstyle. Sekiro's approach is much more interesting because getting a huge damage boost via the strongest sugar in the game is paired with a serious downside, and prosthetics serve mainly to offer stronger combat tactics rather than to change your stats.

Short version, I think it's best to focus options into different playstyles rather than just giving a list of ways to make the game numerically easier.

>Or maybe he just thinks that if he went around killing everyone that he'd end up with no one to rule.
That makes sense actually and its proably one of his main talking points when recruiting other monsters, he could easily kill them but choses to show them mercy, how many people would know about him actually being a human tho?

>Going with Hokuto Ken logic, she's against them. I was thinking the villain is hounding the MC because he views him as competition.
That works too, I was thunk of the gf being part of the other army because of the drama that it brings, I imagine the human told the monsters he intends to break the barrier once he becomes king (which is a lie) and the gf joined because she wanted to be with the protagonist again

What I like about XCom is that you don't have a lot of variety with perks, but you can mix and match them however you want. Some of them are complementary, like the heavy perks that give more grenades or the support perks that boost healing. However there is no catch-all and you will end up picking different guys for different missions depending on their perks. Makes losing them all the more painful because now you have to carefully train up someone for that specific niche.
>>745505602
>it would have been cool if you could get a different neutral ending if you replayed the route after beating Flowey, something like actually fighting Asgore, they could have reused his fight from the base game.
The whole thing about neutral is that Flowey wants you to fight Asgore but because of circumstances outside your control you really can't. It wouldn't make sense for that to suddenly change.
>>745515393
Beautiful drawings. As always, I love your style.
>>
>>745518141
Yeah, that's the idea. I think part of why Silksong's tool system got so many complaints was because tools mechanically are just a free buff you have no reason not to use during a fight, with the cost being boring grinding outside of combat rather than a risk-reward decision in the fight itself like Hollow Knight's spells were. Shell shards serve no purpose except to be spent on tools and very rare sidequests, but Soul is both a healing resource and an attack resource so every spell you cast is a tactical choice. Less popular opinion, but silk spells are also bad because healing is much more costly per use so you have to be performing significantly better than before to ever feel safe using spells.

Nu-XCOM is one of the games that does perks the best, they are always useful and fun to use, I always liked how XCOM has no perks that directly increase the damage dealt by the soldiers, at most you get an increase in critical damage which also changes how you play.

>I could see there being differing accounts of why the war started, so I give it a pass.
I think most monsters would be well aware of the fact that they got sealed by humans that used magic
>>
>>745519703
Maybe that monster believed the humans gained magic by killing monsters (maybe by taking boss monster souls, like in the cut mechanic from Undertale). Or maybe he believed that monsters put the barrier up, possibly being forced to by the humans.
>>
>>745519879
>Maybe that monster believed the humans gained magic by killing monsters (maybe by taking boss monster souls, like in the cut mechanic from Undertale).
oh yeah, that was a thing at one point, I think it would be funny in this context if the war started only because humans wanted to take all the boss monster souls for themselves, doing a parallel of what the humans did in the canon, that being sealing the monsters because they could potentially become a god after killing a few humans
>>
>>745520395
It doesn't even have to be true. Just something the monster drawing the mural believed, or maybe something he wanted people to believe.
>>
I feel like the "undertale zero" situation would be both sides racing against the clock, but for the protagonist, I assume he's got goals more than just reuniting. or maybe that's his only goal at first, but halfway through is when he realizes the situation?
or would it make more sense for him to know he's being followed before he even goes underground.
>>
>>745521496
I imagine he'd know, but not care. This man wants one thing, and one thing only, and he doesn't care who has to die for him to get it.
>>
>>745521568
>This man wants one thing, and one thing only, and he doesn't care who has to die for him to get it.
that makes sense, but maybe at the halfway point he'd shift his goal a bit. when reaching his lover becomes realistic, he has to face the reality of the storm that's coming at his heels, and what it brings to the person he loves as well.
>>
>>745521496
>or would it make more sense for him to know he's being followed before he even goes underground.
Whoever is following him must be determined to complete his task, since there's no going back once you enter the Underground
>>745521568

With how much Chara gets wanked in the fandom you would think we would have a game about playing as Chara when they fell into the Underground

>>745521967

>>
>>745521629
No, I kind of prefer this strong single mindedness that, while driving him to do great things, also acts as this incredibly destructive force for himself and those around him. He's not going to turn back or reconsider, not have some sudden change of heart where he grows as a person and accepts that he can't have her for his and her own good, and accepts his death honorably to shoulder all the consequences of his actions. No, he'll march forward no matter what to get what he came for, and no one will stop him.
>>
>>745521884
It was already established that the person hunting him has a boss monster soul, so they can enter and exit freely. The only one trapped is the main character.
>>
>>745522015
>He's not going to turn back or reconsider, not have some sudden change of heart where he grows as a person and accepts that he can't have her for his and her own good, and accepts his death honorably to shoulder all the consequences of his actions
I'm not talking about any of that. The story would be weaker if it stayed in the same phase the entire time. the halfway point should be where desperation turns into the attack. Where his goal is in sight, he knows more than ever that he can reach her, and the thought of what to do once he reaches her takes root in his mind.

Victory is assured in his heart but once it becomes possible, and maybe even some of the people he's met are beginning to root for him, a plan forms for how to defeat his pursuer.
>also acts as this incredibly destructive force for himself and those around him.
honestly if this is undertale related, that itself should be up to how he goes about his goals during the first half.
>>
>>745522087
>It was already established that the person hunting him has a boss monster soul, so they can enter and exit freely. The only one trapped is the main character.
Oh right, I guess the "human kingdom" had to had someone ready to take care of any human that tries to free the monsters, the last thing they need is an Underground full of monster hybrids

>seems to only happen in the swap stories funnily enough
Chara also got No More Deals, which is a pretty good fangame despite being more genowank, Chara gets attention in skeletonwank thanks to Storyshift since they swap with Sans, making Chara yet another Sans variant, I have no idea what goes on in that dustrust fangame, other than you fight Papyrus while screamo metal plays on the background
>>
>>745522213
I remember one getting announced but it was a long time ago, even before UTY release, an UT "Red" with Chara as a protagonist has a lot of potential, with them being the first contact the underground has with humans in centuries

What's the plan once he reunites with his monster gf? Also this supposedly takes place only 10 years after the war? why did the guy wait for so long before trying to get back with his gf? was he in jail or something?
>>
Not to be a particular peter about this precise premise but you guys are aware the thing about absorbing boss monsters Souls unless you want to do something else with it basically has a time limit of around the time it takes you to whack Asgore and head for the exit.
That's also assuming that it even works which the game doesn't actually make clear.
>>
>>745522172
>Victory is assured in his heart but once it becomes possible, and maybe even some of the people he's met are beginning to root for him, a plan forms for how to defeat his pursuer.
I don't know. This guy doesn't seem like the type to plan ahead or think about what he's going to do, all he thinks about is where he's going and what he's doing right now. That's what got him in this situation to begin with. A man with any kind of consideration for the future wouldn't have done the things he's done, the things he's doing. There's no future in his actions, but he doesn't care. Damn the future and damn the world.

When he confronts his hunter, it will be because his hunter has finally caught up to him.

If any long term plans were to come from someone aside from him. Maybe his lover, cursing him for doing something so stupid, but still doing everything she can to save both their lives.

>The story would be weaker if it stayed in the same phase the entire time
This I very strongly disagree with. Flat character arcs can be excellent when handled properly, and a story doesn't need to radically reorient itself with new arcs and changes of pace. It can just be a steady march towards a singular goal, and then it ends.

> that itself should be up to how he goes about his goals during the first half.
The pursuit of his goals is inherently destructive, and there's no way short of killing him to make him stop pursuing them. Even you, the player, with direct control of him, can't make him stop. All you can do is choose the extent of how destructive it is.
>>
>>745522554
>Not to be a particular peter about this precise premise but you guys are aware the thing about absorbing boss monsters Souls unless you want to do something else with it basically has a time limit of around the time it takes you to whack Asgore and head for the exit.
Are you saying the boss monster soul has a time limit after being absorbed?
>>
>>745522208
I think they're more concerned about the monsters getting his soul.

Maybe for a third act twist, you could even add that he's been branded a murderer as well, having already killed another human over what they did to his love.
>>
>>745522538
>10 years
What makes you say that? I was thinking it'd be only shortly after it. Weeks or months.
>>
>>745522554
>you guys are aware the thing about absorbing boss monsters Souls unless you want to do something else with it basically has a time limit of around the time it takes you to whack Asgore and head for the exit.
No it doesn't. Maybe you can imagine it having one, but the game never explicitly states there is a time limit.

>That's also assuming that it even works which the game doesn't actually make clear.
Yeah, but we can just say it works, which we have, so it works, because we're writing the story and we make the rules.
>>
>>745522538
>was he in jail or something?
honestly not a bad plot. maybe he was outspoken against the war and got sent to the dungeons as an example, but he'd been biding his time ever since.
>What's the plan once he reunites with his monster gf?
in the beginning? There is no plan, like you said just single track mind, he wants her, he's been separated from her and he needs to reunite with his love.
But as the reality of it sets in that he's actually going to accomplish his goal, maybe it depends on how he's gone about things so far.
revenge against the person pursuing him? Take the boss monster soul from his pursuer and do something about the barrier himself? Or even just a plan to kill his pursuer so that he can live in peace with his waifu
honestly this guy sounds like a purple soul.
>>745522589
ah that reply was someone else
>This guy doesn't seem like the type to plan ahead or think about what he's going to do
yes, which is why I'm suggesting its something that sets in over half of the game.
it's the act 2 that sets in, perhaps a moment of quiet hits when he accomplishes a major goal towards reaching her or setting his pursuer off his trail.
>This I very strongly disagree with. Flat character arcs can be excellent when handled properly, and a story doesn't need to radically reorient itself with new arcs and changes of pace. It can just be a steady march towards a singular goal, and then it ends.
aside from disagreeing with your approach here, and the fact that a character arc is not an arc if it is flat, the story is not reorienting itself because the story was never set in stone.
>The pursuit of his goals is inherently destructive, and there's no way short of killing him to make him stop pursuing them
there's a difference in the destructiveness of hurting those around you, and killing the person who is actively wronging you.
>>
>>745522687
>I think they're more concerned about the monsters getting his soul.
That's a good point, monsters only need a single soul to return to the surface, anyone would think a single soul would be enough for the barrier to be destroyed.
>Maybe for a third act twist, you could even add that he's been branded a murderer as well, having already killed another human over what they did to his love.
That would explain why the guy took so long to enter the Underground despite that being the only goal in his mind ever since the barrier was made
>>
>>745522614
Maybe, maybe not like I said the game doesn't actually make this clear but on some level it's implied since if it wasn't the case you could take Toriel's and in no situation you absorb Asgore's.

Not absorbing Toriel's soul seems like an oversight, originally you were meant to get her soul and that would unlock the ability to use spells.

>honestly this guy sounds like a purple soul.
He seems more like a red soul or an orange soul to me. Feels a lot like young Conan, although maybe a bit more John Wick in that he's just singley dedicated to this one goal.

>ah that reply was someone else
Yes, that guy you replied to first in this post isn't me.

>yes, which is why I'm suggesting its something that sets in over half of the game.
And I'm saying it wouldn't and shouldn't happen at all. This man is terminally shortsighted and narrow minded. Self reflection and planning for the future are simply outside his nature. That's the tragedy of it. He's marching forward into his death and likely dooming his love as well, alongside countless others, and he refuses to even think about what he's doing to his very last breath.

> and the fact that a character arc is not an arc if it is flat
Yes it is. Flat arcs a real literary term and a respected concept. Not every character needs to grow and change, and sometimes they're better if they don't.

>the story is not reorienting itself because the story was never set in stone.
Being "set in stone" has no relevance here. Of course it can change, but it changing means a radical change in direction. I'm saying this story shouldn't change direction. It should just be a grim march forward until it reaches the end.

>there's a difference in the destructiveness of hurting those around you, and killing the person who is actively wronging you.
Ok? I don't see how that's an argument against my point. He's hurting a lot of people by doing what he's doing, even if he never strikes one down himself, just his presence in the underground is hurting people, and to get what he wants he's going to have to kill a few directly. And that's assuming he even can get what he wants. He may just have doomed his love and himself with his actions, and his fight against that is just going to drag others down with him.

you can't take Toriel's soul, so it having an expiration date is a moot point. And you can't say Frisk is refusing to take it because he knows it would expire, because he would have no way of knowing that he'd need a monster soul to cross the barrier or that boss monster souls can expire. He likely wouldn't even know he could take souls.

I think this guy would've been some badass human warrior. Maybe he was off fighting, and it took him a long time to get back. When he did, he learned that his allies or friends had betrayed the monsters "for their own good" that "there was simply nothing else we could do" so he became enraged and killed them. Then he went to Mt Ebott, if there were any guards there he killed or otherwise injured them, then went inside.

Anyways this conversation is a separate reply chain discussing a separate idea.

>Yes it is. Flat arcs a real literary term and a respected concept. Not every character needs to grow and change, and sometimes they're better if they don't.
its a dumb term but I do know what you're talking about, but the problem is those characters then depend on the characters around them, and by asserting that this character is a flat character arc, it's a conversation terminator.
>He seems more like a red soul or an orange soul to me. Feels a lot like young Conan, although maybe a bit more John Wick in that he's just singley dedicated to this one goal.
I stray away from red soul because that's "protagonist energy" for me and has more guaranteed power to change the course of the narrative, whereas it's a lot more up in the air with the others.
>And I'm saying it wouldn't and shouldn't happen at all. This man is terminally shortsighted and narrow minded.
the version you are asserting, which is why I'm arriving at the conversation terminator statement. We don't really know much about him other than that he's dead set on the goal of reuniting with his waifu, which can go a lot of ways, and play into several soul traits.
>Being "set in stone" has no relevance here.
it absolutely has relevance because you're commandeering aspects of this hypothetical as absolutes.

>but the problem is those characters then depend on the characters around them, and by asserting that this character is a flat character arc, it's a conversation terminator.
Well we could use it to segue into the characters around them, which I think is what this game would mainly focus on, just like Undertale does. This guy charging into these people's lives and destroying everything like a bull in a china shop because he's too single minded and short sighted to do anything else.

We could talk about who he might encounter or how they might interact with him. What conflicts they may have with him or how they may view his motivations.

> whereas it's a lot more up in the air with the others.
Orange is probably better then. Or he could be integrity. He cares deeply for his love and being true to what he believes, no matter the cost.

>the version you are asserting,
That's the version I'm arguing for. I think it would make for a fun story. Its a bit like Kratos in God of War being somewhat tragic in how he just can't help but chase revenge until it kills him and everyone else in the world, only with an added romantic twist.

Plus I think him not renegging on this or changing his priorities would be a refreshing change of pace compared to other stories. I like stories where characters are allowed to just keep doubling down, even if it means being a bad person.

>it absolutely has relevance because you're commandeering aspects of this hypothetical as absolutes.
I am arguing what they should be because I think they would be better that way.
>>
Depending on how much time has passed since the war ended in this "Undertale Zero" The Underground might not have a single proper town inside of it, I can also imagine there being more communities that don't respect Asgore's authority and are trying to build their own stuff outside of his influence
>>
>>745522826
>honestly this guy sounds like a purple soul.
Perseverance in UT is about taking notes (according to the ball game) so I don't think this guy fits the bill, he could be a bravery soul or a new type of soul, like the "soul of loyalty" or something like that
>>
>>745524194
Maybe there was some small community of monsters living there before the underground was sealed, and they have spite towards the newcomers for crowing them and taking all the food, and maybe also for revealing the location of their secret hideaway. Meanwhile the new monsters live in disparate camps, caves, and shanty towns.

The whole place is plagued with factionalism and lawlessness. Asgore is nominally in charge, but only a small population of loyalists actually support him. Meanwhile the rest either don't care or are oppositional.

that's fair, I forgot about the ball game text. It could still be more broadly talking about the perseverance needed to do that, but the note taking part is a bit much.

It is said in game (I think in the waterfall murals) that the ruins where the first part of the Underground that got colonized by the monsters, but I like your idea, we can always say that the mural meant "colonized by the monster kingdom" either that or use the ol reliable that Fromsoftware always uses when they want to introduce new lore, the other monsters were erased from history, even I don't think Asgore would do something like that.
>The whole place is plagued with factionalism and lawlessness. Asgore is nominally in charge, but only a small population of loyalists actually support him. Meanwhile the rest either don't care or are oppositional.

In UT monsters eat snails, in UTY they still have farms and in Cooking With Kindness is stated that food made with pure magic and no ingredients tastes worse than food made with ingredients, I think the cavemen monsters won't appreciate being forced to eat magicslop just to accommodate to their new neighbors

>>745524898
The Ruins were the first settlement. Maybe that's where Asgore lives. Its something in construction, while everyone lives in shantytowns in the meantime. The native monsters don't get counted since they're a minority and the surface refugees wrote the history books.

that's honestly fair. I just had the image in my head of griffith waiting all those years, but then again, griffith wasn't being patient if he had no choice I guess, right?

I always wondered what the fuck is up with MT Ebott since there seems to be a whole other planet inside of it, other monsters living there before the war is plausible
>Well, you're in luck, because it seems we've accidentally recreated the setting to Gothic.
Gothic takes place inside a mountain and features a faction of monsters that have been living there for god knows how long and another faction that were sealed there after losing a war?
>>
>>745525010
oh neat.
that means my fun green fangame idea still has a premise. The idea is basically a magician's kid falls down. Since humans used up their magic to seal the monsters, the magic kid has 0 way to actually defend himself except for pacifism. The latent magic ability he did learn however translates into collecting ingredients for food after every fight, letting him camp out at the end of every level with his new friends. In other words, he's forced into being a pacifist for half the game, until later where he has to make some decisions after losing a friend to something horrible.
maybe i'll write it fully and sprite it but not today or anytime soon

Maybe he could be an integrity soul too, it fits with the idea that he got imprisoned for being vocally against the war, someone that puts his ideals above all else.

Seems like options sacrifice "perfect" design to give the player the satisfaction of feeling like they have agency. It's probably worth tanking the balance a bit for that because of how satisfying that feeling is, or at least for a lot of people. It really depends on what kind of game though. If you wanted to make a super tight and focused action game that's a bit different but I've lost interest in those personally. Half the fun in games is doing things the way you wanna do them and seeing what happens

I can see that. I've had games where I wished I had some of the control to exert over things like say in deus ex, but I also dislike when a game is too open and doesn't feel directed. I want to have SOME but not all control over the how of things.

Do it like monster hunter (where the changes actually matter and impact how you interact with the combat) or I simply won't care, if not outright skip the game. The idea behind the upgrades is supposedly that "you can use a weapon you liked at the start of the game at the end instead of having to switch to a more powerful one", but the way upgrades work means that your current weapon is almost always the most powerful thing you have to use.

It would make sense that weapons you get later on would be easier to upgrade to or use at higher levels sooner, but that you have the option to rework starter weapons into things with ultimate power later on, meaning you have incentive to switch, but the game still delivers the promise that you can ultimately play through with your prefered moveset.
>>
>>745530989
>but the game still delivers the promise that you can ultimately play through with your prefered moveset.
there's a lot of value to this, but it comes at the cost of feeling like you have different tools that are best to switch to for given situations I think.

Your Turn To Die (YTTD/Kimi Ga Shine) is an adventure game/visual novel hybrid, think like Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, Zero Escape but it's made in RPG maker.
I mentioned the three game series above because it's very clearly inspired by them. Anyway even some smaller choices actually affect how certain characters will behave (the bongos come to mind, you'll understand if you do play it)

I think I said this last time, but my solution for that sort of problem is to either do a bright colored line, or to have two lines go around everything, one light and one dark, that way it stands out no matter what.

I do not know why it is this way every time I try to work on this story, but I get the overwhelming sensation that every single thing on the page is wrong and that it needs to be all erased.
I attempted Naranja anons idea to write with my eyes closed and it actually works pretty well, though every time I open them again it takes me a while to convince myself to keep writing and that what is on the page so far doesn't need to be obliterated. I should try doing the "rubber ducky" thing to convince my brain that the ideas that I'm overreacting to are not offenses against reality.
I'm going to try to hold myself to doing the eyes closed thing next writing session, but force myself to do it and try not to let the imp on my shoulder take hold in between bouts of ideas.

Undyne never met a human before, I think she would either bet too young to remember any previous humans or she never crossed paths with one before, Undyne being a kid compresses the timeline again, but UTY already did it so, whatever, I do think Gerson being on a vacation is an smart way to remove him from the story, I don't see guard Gerson just letting a human walk away like that in the Underground

>How do you feel about games that give you a large range of options?
It depends on what you mean.
>EAD/EPD give players a huge move set in 3D Mario games and DK Bananza
You have a ton of options with your approach to obstacles and you can do what you want according to your own skill, but there is almost no customization for the character.
>Path of Exile has a huge passive tree and tons of customization for skills themselves via the gem system
Players are left with an absurd number of levers to pull to come up with something creative that can perform in a scalable endgame, but the core gameplay is very simple.

Those are two of the extreme examples I can think of and they're all good games, as much as people want to seethe about Nintendo or seethe about PoE being a casino (it's not, btw). So yeah, PoE extreme gear dependence with tons of options, while Mario doesn't have gear or builds at all, both give players a lot of options at different spots in their designs, and both are good.

this guy was going to be a missable but incredibly important boss on the prisoner island that lets the kindness soul have a cell saga moment.
>>
>>745545637
>this guy was going to be a missable but incredibly important boss
So he's an optional boss but he's an important character in the lore or you need to fight him in order to unlock an ending? something like that?
>on the prisoner island that lets the kindness soul have a cell saga moment.
Your game has a prison arc too?
>>
>>745545727
He's important in that you have to fight him if you ignore all the warnings and go to the "heart of darkness" in the prisoner island. He will stalk you and Taffer through it and take the opportunity to learn everything about you. Then when you're vulnerable and seperated, he'll fuckin' kill Taffer and hand you a leaf packet full of his dust.
"Your friend... He wanted you to have this. What did he call you two before?"
"That's right! Now you're real 'dust buddies'. Heh!"
Trying to pacifistfag him just doesn't work. He calls you a coward for not fighting back, stupid for not killing him when you have many MANY chances to, and a dogmatic hypocrite that doesn't care about anything but their own moral code.
If you've been a pacifist up until that point, you now know magic through your rabbit friend's dust. You can, and should, put Armer down. If you do not, he will follow you back and kill all the people you care about.
Dess, Rudy, the newborn Noelle, everyone in Snowdin you talked to before you set off with Taffer to the southern prison isle. Carol herself has to put the monster down.
But you stuck to your moral code, you can tell yourself you never hurt anyone.
pic unrelated
>>
>>745546360
Dang, that's way more than I expected, I guess sparing him gives you the worst ending in the game, remember this idea of having a monster that you must kill in order to unlock the best ending, so I guess this being so brutal is to hammer down the idea into the fandom that some monsters are just *that* evil
