Is it worth it to learn Japanese so you can play games without localisation?

Localizers are not human, and do not have human rights.

gyarus were not gen z, they were millennials
i use past tense because that shit is dead now, like scene or emo
could have just used early-mid 2000s internet speak or just do what everyone does and make them valley girls
>>
I downloaded one of those OCR dictionaries so that I can mess around with Japanese media. See how far I can get when I don't have to draw them in Jisho to know what a sentence is talking about
>>
>>745569381
the image is not wrong btw, for some reason everyone outside of japan thinks gyaru = some slut with over the top body wearing leopard pattern underwear.
>>
>>745569897
>gyaru = some slut with over the top body wearing leopard pattern underwear.
Yes it does and it's PEAK, also describes playboys with a tan and blonde hair
>>
>gyarus aren't well known so just make them 20 year old brain rotted zoomers
fucking retards don't know beach bums or bimbos
>>
>>745569897
When the japanese saw american woman going topless outside and protest angrily about patriarchy, they asked why they behave like that. The american answered, wdym, it's a normal gal thing.
Since then the japanese called woman who inspired by american way of life, a gyaru(gal). A gyaru basically just an american.
>>
>>745569381
Isn't the purpose of this is to introduce japanese CULTURE? Why would you change it? Even fucking chink games have to force their chingchong culture on you because there is no western equivalent to say xianxia or cultivation shit. Why would japanese pop culture have to be changed?
>>
>>745569897
>for some reason everyone outside japan thinks gyaru are the things that everyone in japan calls gyaru
You might be confusing "gyaru" for "ganguro" from the 2000s which is where the current image of gyaru is watered down from.
>>745571290
Gyaru has nothing at all to do with the west, it's an entirely japanese thing, other than I suppose fashion in general having western influence.
>>
>>745571446
Like seriously, chink games like genshin have 2000s tier TL notes just to explain to you what particular phrases, idioms or concepts mean because the average timmy otherwise has no idea what the fuck that means, meanwhile western localizers giving japanese games the 4Kids treatment and turning them into american media.
>>
>>745569381
Did they just equate gyarus and gen-z? Seriously? What the fuck do they have in common?
>>
>>745571683
Nothing. They can't accept that cultures are different for a reason. Just like how the fata morgana localizers translated a male tsundere into a fragile male insecurity.
>>
>>745571629
>the average timmy
it's not white people who have problems with it, it's the brownoids and the darkies and the trannies that are spiritually black
>>
>>745571683
Like the image is implying, the manner of speaking. Heavy usage of net-based slang terms that sound like complete nonsense if you're over a certain age.

I don't particularly like a lot of localization decisions, but having gyaru speak like zoomers isn't far off. That's pretty much what they're doing, using a bunch of annoying and cringey memespeak. It's cringey in japanese too.

i have nothing but contempt for localizers.
>>
>>745575573
Like another poster mentioned this is a lot of internet hand-me-down talk that's mistaking ganguro fashion for gyaru mannerisms

Gyarus are seen as annoying zoomers and so the decision to localize the character as a zoomer is the closest approximation

It's absolutely worth it.
However, you should also hope that all localizers be replaced with AI, because otherwise you can't discuss games with your friends, cuz they played the fanfiction version of the game.
You should also buy only the Japanese version, and pirate all global versions, because why would you buy a game infected with EN scripts.

I wish that were the case, but I know AI translations wouldn't fix that. Localizers will always exist even if a machine is translating for them. Dubs will always exist as long as millions of mouth breathers demand them, and scripts will be rewritten to suite the dub and sound more "natural" in English. Also character names will be changed so that the dub actors aren't twisting their tongues trying to Tanakahashimotosuke or something.

That's not localization. Localization is like pic related. Realizing the joke in japanese is about all the kanji having the radical for box in them, and finding an equivalent in English(picking a bunch of words that have the string "box" in them even if they have a different meaning from the kanji). The difference is that localization is a tool to preserve the meaning, it's part of translation. What morons do, is rewrite characters because they're incompetent and have brain rot, and then hide behind professional sounding words to avoid criticism. It is worth it to learn Japanese not to avoid localization, but to avoid actual fucking troglodytes butchering Japanese media.
>>
>>745582032
Internet centrists are actually retarded. You're trying to sound smarter than both sides but you're inventing a made up definition of localization.
Actually look up what it means, even the wikipedia article is a good start because it quotes. Its more of a marketing thing than a translation thing.

>>745582157
There's nothing centralist about saying the term localization is being co-opted by malicious retards. And there are sources are that state localization is meant to preserve the meaning. I'm not saying you're an idiot thinking localization is bad. I'm saying those people(self-proclaimed localizers) are idiots and you shouldn't let them define what these words mean because they're retards.
>>
>>745582157
The definition of localization doesn't matter when we have examples like >>745575751
The correct definition of Localization is "whatever the localizer felt like that day".
>>
>>745582157
Localization is a nonsense term.

>>

>>
>>745582380
>>745582476
Pointing out that "professional translators" don't know what localization means and have been using it hillariously wrong (EX: that one guy who argued that translated text without localization would be unreadable because it wouldn't adjust the grammar) is actually bombshell ammo, because it proves that they actually don't have any professional experience. You're losing out.

>>
>>745569381
If the localization bothers you, then that's the way to go about it. Localization is expensive, of course it'll be made with general audiences in mind, and will prioritize comprehensibility and general enjoyability over preserving every single Japanese cultural reference. If you believe that translations should be direct with zero cultural or regional accommodations, then sorry, but you're just never going to get that from a professional localization because that would make it a bad localization. Not to mention translating between languages always loses a lot of nuance by necessity. If you actually care, you learn the language.

Interpretation is a necessary part of translating anything. If you spoke more than one language you'd know that meanings don't accurately map across the words used by two different languages. If that bothers you, you've got little recourse but to learn the source language.

>AI inhouse translations for other languages and still keep hiring californian DEI trash
Actually sad when you remember this is predominately an English issue. Many games with terrible English translations are significantly better in French,German,Spanish, ect. The languages that have competent translators are the ones getting replaced first.

English translators were never really competent in the first place: they always were including social commentary or other DEI changes. they do have a human specialized in the language checking up if it looks right most of the time at the translating studio if they hire one that uses AI. its no different to machine translation process.
>>
>>745586581
