Reminder that you don't need a remake. You don't need a remaster. You don't need a port. The original game still exists. Yes it is still good. It can be emulated in a cycle accurate manner exactly as it existed in the past and will still exist as long as human civilization and the power to generate electricity endures.

You're supposed to use your rings (like ranged magic attacks) on Bloody Mary, but in the localised version a lot of players never use the magirock because they think they're single-use consumables, so they constantly save them for later.
They actually function as your loadout capacity.

For the last time, it's not happening. Tomoyoshi Miyazaki, the founder of Quintet and co-creator of Terranigma, literally disappeared off the face of the earth over 20 years ago to escape legal troubles. It would be illegal to re-release this game.

This game is so beautiful, it genuinely brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it. Traveling the desolate wastes of our world, slowly bringing back life piece by piece, seeing the world resurrect before your own eyes. Each step forward bringing something incredible into creation; and regrettably leaving something important behind. There has never been a game like this before or since.

Terranigma would be a 10/10 if world travel wasn’t so fucking annoying and if you didn’t do literally 1 damage to enemies later on without grinding. I know people will claim a buncha SNES RPGs “require” grinding but you really can’t play Terranigma underleveled at all. I mean, you technically can beat every boss doing chip damage by spamming the broken dash attack but that’s not fun.
>>
>>745642208
There's like 2 fights in the entire game where lvling cockblocks you and that is the witch (bloody mary in the english version?) and dark gaia. Aside from that you will ALWAYS hit the strength target by just playing normally.

You can also over-level in a matter of like 30 minutes at two spots in the game. The first being grecliff with the bird fight. Deplete one bird's HP (80 HP total) until it is almost dead. Then perform a jump attack to kill the bird exactly as you're falling off the cliff into the next screen.

You can also farm claws in the Ra-Tree's boss chamber for a while to level really fast in the early game. (Takes like 15 minutes).

>>745643129
I wouldn't mind padding out some of the more lackluster parts of the game especially towards the end. Like the drug trial? What's the point of that even? Or the mermaid tower which is kinda weirdly short and lackluster?

Some improvements to leveling the towns or even spacing out the pacing after you re-awaken Beruga. The game goes kinda giga fast from that to suddenly returning to the underworld and fighting dark Gaia. One or two more dungeons in-between the lab and the airship would do great.

I beat this the other day. The first half is amazing, but it becomes a chore once you start getting full towns, lots of side-missions that are just "get an item, deliver it, exit and re-enter a bunch of times until the quest ends", bosses with WAY too much HP, and a lot of parts where the game flat out refuses to tell you where to go. Not to mention the gameplay feels extremely unbalanced in a lot of ways, and the game itself doesn't even properly explain how Magirocks work. It's still worth a play tho; the music, visuals, story and characters are all top-notch, but a re-release should really address some of these issues.

Yeah, it's a very good action JRPG for the SNES, it didn't release in the US but did in Europe, so it's like their equivalent of Chrono Trigger, since they didn't get that. Made by a company called Quintet, there are two other games that are loosely related to it called Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia (or Illusion of Time in PAL regions), those games aren't as polished as Terranigma, but they're all great games. Start with Soul Blazer if you want to play them both before a potential Terranigma re-release, since who knows if they'll release them as well. Actraiser is another good SNES game made by Quintet, that got a remake re-release somewhat recently, but idk how good it is. You're better off emulating, they all hold up. Actraiser plays differently than the other games though, it's half city building sim, half platformer, while Soul Blazer/IoG/Terranigma are top down action RPGs.

My recollection is that Bloody Mary takes negligible physical damage unless you've over-levelled through grinding, which necessitates using the magic attacks that a player is unlikely to have used at all by that point in the game.
Nearly everything else in the game is fine with melee alone, and some of the rings have non-combat applications like healing yourself.

>>745674538
This is how LRG is making a new physical release of Little Samson happen, so it's nice to see this orphan works licensing system come into effect for Japanese copyrighted works.
>>
>>745675738
>My recollection is that Bloody Mary takes negligible physical damage unless you've over-levelled through grinding
Every enemy in this game has a str threshold you have to meet before you can deal normal physical damage. Mary generally requires you to be level 24 to 25. The game has an elemental system which is never explained tho so you can equip the sun spear or use sun magic to kill her before that quite easily.

but for real, it has the same retarded balancing problems where you can rofl stomp the game with spamming magic or play pretend and only use magic sparingly against bosses, since there is no way to beat them melee only unless you are severely overleveld.
Ironically this was kind of fixed even in the remake.
>>
>>745686713
secret of mana barely has a story
secret of evermore is american copy slop
seiken densetsu also barely has a story, and managing 3 characters plays more like the ff7r than an action rpg
chrono trigger not an action rpg, and deals with time travel to reshape history, not building the world
ffv is not an action rpg and is solely for jobbing

the closest games are the ones in the same series (illusion of gaia, which has a gay story and soul blazer which i've never played) and maybe games like crusader of centi (which is more a zelda clone)

Bahamut Lagoon is truly ruined by its NTR, but it's also worth noting that it doesn't do it quite as pathetically as a modern game would. The NTR is a shock, not a humiliation ritual.

>Byuu remains loyal to her for the sake of saving the world, but Yoyo notes that her actions have permanently ruined their bond.
>He no longer talks to her like he used to and she's deeply, quietly hurt that he no longer loves or respects her
>She tries to guilt trip him about this, as foids do and he just shrugged it off, he can't change how he feels
>Because of this, she's basically alone in channelling the Dragons power. There's no power of friendship stuff, so it causes her immense pain
>The guy she cheats with actually faces consequences for his evil acts. He gets lynched and killed
>So in the end she's left completely alone. They saved the world, but the man she loves is dead and Byuu doesn't care about her anymore
>Byuu peaces out, leaving her behind to go start the rest of his life

Compare that to how cuckshit gets written now, Byuu would be expected to step up and take her back. Or him losing all love for her whole be seen as an Incel Moment, "he's not entitled to her!". Think how badly women react to the idea of the Friend Zone.

Because it never released in America its got basically zero cultural footprint. Unfortunately, online discourse for SNES is dominated by what American boomers played as kids (eg. They're shocked to find out that Chrono Trigger flopped because they've spent 30yrs talking about it).

The only people who ever talked about Terranigma are those that have played out. I've gone looking for decent long form retrospectives on it, and there's basically nothing. Or at least nothing of much quality.

It's the weakest of their games.
It's only super popular because it didn't get a US release.
People tend to over-rate things they missed out on. Because journos talk about it like it was some mythical legendary game when in reality, it's an ok to decent game that re-uses all the themes that the previous games already did, and wraps them in sub-par gameplay, combat, and level design. The main reason it's not as good is because the director of the other games had left, and so the b-team had to develop Terranigma.

Unironically FF1 has one of my favourite endings of the series because it's kind of like this. The warriors of light don't die, but in erasing the time loop, they return to a present time that has only known peace, the first villain presumably had no cause to turn evil, and since their deeds never happened or were required, no one knows who the warriors of light even are. If the tone of the ending is anything to go by, they are all perfectly fine with this.

>quintet was probably in debt and he just went fuck it and left.
That's not what happened. After quintet was winding down he became the fall guy for some credit card processor fraud scheme. People speculated that it was some yakuza operation and he got just sent to some bauxite mine like kaiji. Another (possibly schizophrenic) dude on /vr/ years ago claimed to have met Tomoyoshi and he worked in some gambling related semi-illegal profession and had no desire to return to the normal world. But it's all rumors and hearsay and dudes like Yuzo Koshiro or Kamui Fujiwara who would know best refuse to comment on him in the end it's a mystery. Terranigma is my favorite game so the creator just vanishing under unknown circumstances and leaving the world with a profound quirky game that's in legal limbo forever is the most beautiful outcome. I really don't want a remake or remaster. Just leave it as is.

The "can't do anything about it because miyazaki is gone" stuff was straight from ex-quintet staff. So clearly the legal situation between actraiser and terranigma was a different one. Also regardless if they sorted it out - the game should just stay as is. Not everything needs a reboot.

I replayed it with the relocalization patch recently, and there's a moral that's surprisingly relevant to current developments, that reckless advances in science fuelled by greed will be costly to humanity.

>>
>>745710327
Seems to be divisive. I noticed this for years. I'd probably reverse your order, for instance.
I think maybe the strict linearity of IoG puts people off, but I don't know. I love it's pacing and mood. I don't really know a developer who had a similar mood as his games. Ys1 and 2 have it too. There's a swift, realistic cruelty to them. A very "the world is hard." Mentality. The fortune teller getting murdered suddenly in Ys 1 is an example of that. Turbo's death and memorial in SB is another. It's all over his games. It's striking enough that I've wondered whether the creator was a serious Buddhist or something. The games always strike me as quite religious in it's theming. Not just the dressing, which most Japanese games use religion as.

>>745712286
I like all three. Soul Blazer is purely about the dungeon to town building cycle. Gaia is this big linear journey with your friends. Then Terranigma mixes both where you keep on building the world across a big journey, in entirely different ways as you advance through chapters.
Depending on if you prefer variety, a cohesive experience, the journey part or the world building part your preferred game can definitely change. They're all good games at what they aim to do.
Personally I really enjoyed the big differences between Terranigma's chapters. Having the game itself evolve from its Soul Blazer style opening through a big journey into full blown open world sidequesting as the world evolves due to your actions is really cool imo

Chrono Trigger was made by the "Dream Team" and was heavily pushed, it was geared up for massive success and yet it flopped hard. It barely sold in either the West or Japan.

There's a shitload, but only a few really matter.

There are a few specific spots where you can save during dungeons such that you leave the game in a state where you won't be able to leave if you power off, because of the way the puzzles will be reset on game load(these are "possible" but require certain backtracking or extensive fucking around). The big one though is the Verminator boss in the medieval area. If you just go straight through the area as intended to fight it, you won't see any issues. However, it's also possible to backtrack here and trigger flags before they should. This causes things ranging from letting you skip the boss entirely, to putting it in a state where if it uses certain attacks in the right order it'll corrupt your data in such a way that if you save the game, when you go to the file select screen and it tries to read them it gets looped back to the start of the intro reel and title screen(this can only be fixed by pulling the battery).

But by and large, unless you're trying to break the game or sequence break you'd never notice anything weird.

Granstream is a mixed bag, I like it overall but it has issues.
>looks good for a PS1 game but none of the character models have faces making it very uncanny at times
>music is good no caveats
>combat is real time but feels a little stiff. Some enemies are a complete pain to deal with like mages or shield enemies, most reliable option is shield charging since this auto locks on and stuns the enemy when it connects
>item drops require you to play flawlessly and never get hit so you're basically never getting items that way
>story bounces between being very standard fare fantasy adventure and having surprisingly dark plot points
>translation is kind of jank at times
I want to talk about the finale too but it's very spoilery so I can't in good faith. Amyways, Laramee best girl.
