I genuinely believe that part of what ruined the magic was too many blocks. You have so many options for building that it makes builds feel less special. Trying to go for some kind of effect or look by combining unconventional blocks rewarded being creativity. It being a simple game was a big part of its appeal.

Saw a post a while back that explained why modern minecraft is so unfun: its developed around extreme lategame worlds. Anything new that gets added needs some kind of redstone automation to make it worthwhile to interact with. Want to do anything with hoppers? That's going to require an auto iron farm. Want to use an elytra? You're going to need several auto farms for all the fireworks. You want to interact with nu-enchanting at all? You will need autofarms for books, lapis, xp, anvils, etc. Everything is an insane resource dump. So any new world feels like a laundry list of shit you need to set up before you can finally enjoy the game.Prior to that you had diamond gear being endgame... and that was it. There were fewer blocks and you didn't need to go out of your way to acquire a solid pallet of stuff to work with.

I really wish there were more people competing for Yung's stranglehold on structure redesigns because some of them just kinda aren't all there, but it's mostly better than leaving vanilla structures if you want something new to explore. His mineshafts are great though. If you're into magic you should definitely try out Iron's spellbooks, pretty straightforward spellslinging using spells you find from structures and killing strong magical monsters. Ars Nouveu has spells too, but it's mostly for utility and building and automation. The spellcrafting in that is a bit like Noita if you've heard of it and it's really fun to customize your spells.You should definitely have at least farmer's delight.I would also recommend Tropicraft, incredibly comfy tropical dimension for a break from everything else.
I'm kind of interesting in hosting an alpha or early beta server for some buddies of mine but from what I recall, skins are broken, and also the netcode around this time was total dogshit. Are there any sort of mods that "fix" the netcode while keeping everything else the same? Thought I remembered some sort of Minecraft source code leak so maybe there's a project someone made?

It's probably my favorite dungeon mod ever made, the dungeons have clear entrances from the surface without being too flashy or gaudy, and the dungeons themselves are relatively simple and straightforward with a good amount of looting and combat fun with mob difficulty increasing as you get lower with them having potion effects and armor. The dungeon layouts are simple but work well, and they've got plenty of secrets to look for. It's just a modern version of the old Roguelike dungeons mod.

Also has a way to place random blocks when you're building, if you're into that. The beginning of the end was pre-generated structures. In a creative block building game.Then it became a race to the bottom in feeding the cattle more content to indulge in. Suddenly the landscape became irrelevant, most people just run from structure to structure. Find village, find shipwreck, find desert temple, build portal, find fortress, find bastion, find stronghold, kill ender dragon. For some reason the RPGtards had to be entertained by polluting the world with ugly premade buildings and loot.Technically the mob spawner dungeons were the first building, but those were literally underground cobble boxes with a spawner, so cave generation doesn't fuck it up and hide the thing inside walls, and two chests with some crap items that were still unique enough that you might seek them out at some point. That was fine, just a funny thing to find. Basing the whole game progression on structures was just so fucking retarded, yet predictable. It's infinitely easier to add another shit building than to add actual gameplay.

I think the decision to make “slow drifting floating platform” be a ghast was sensible, better than adding a new mob (especially after they keep getting roasted over shit like sniffers that don’t tie into the existing game content at all) really the only thing that sucks about it is that it looks retarded.
