if you dont like it, why not quit? as for me, i love practice writing random stories in japanese and then having AI-sensei grade me on it. it's just so much fun getting feedback instantly like this. feels like im back in my school days desu~~

It's always nice to go back and replay stuff in Japanese for the differences, especially the shitty MTL stuff

Translations aren't a binary, it's not just "translated" vs "untranslated"

It's the author's original intent vs someone else's rewrite / reinterpretation, which may be anywhere between half-decent and unsalvageable garbage.
>>
Play the original so you can bitch about the translation from a point of authority instead of intuition.

other than that there's no real appeal for me to learn japanese. except I guess reading monogatari in it's orginal translation for the jokes, not that im sure i'd get the humor even if i could speak it.

This seems like a tricky one to TL. So she says something that may sound like "trying hard to lay a curse", but she's actually talking about being not so smart. And the word that would correspond to "laying" the curse, かける, appears to be actually 駆ける. I'm not sure why a word for "running" is used here but I suppose in this line it still means to just "give it all you've got".
It seems the translator here couldn't figure out what to do with this hiragana misunderstanding play and ended up with what's frankly nonsense, but I'm not sure what to do either even if I'm able to see the mistake.

IIRC, context is the creepy lady and the little boy (Takeru) are about to run a three-legged race for a school event. So in this case, 鈍くて means "slow" and 駆ける takes its literal meaning, to run.

And yeah it's hard to fault the translator on this one, he made an effort but some puns are simply impossible to translate without TL notes.

At this point, learning Japanese just to play games is not worth it if you aren’t into extremely niche stuff, you learn it to bypass translations if you want to see the original writing with zero alterations. It’s a massive amount of effort, so if you don’t have passion to enjoy the journey, just don’t do it.

you've done the sort of self improvement stuff is what makes one a mature adult, the world's full of mental stuntees who use low effort simulacrums of parts of life to convince themselves they're worth anything, you've taken a step beyond that. I've had two Anons previously get really mad at me because I didn't agree about Japanese being hard (seeing as it's something small children can learn) and because I learned most of my Japanese passively just by talking to Japanese people in online spaces.

Learning any language is a matter of motivation, not difficulty. On paper, Spanish is easier than Japanese for native English speakers to learn, but if you don't care about anything surrounding it youre not going to make any progress. If you study Japanese and aren't making progress it's a good idea to figure out why you're learning it. I think learning it just to read anime/manga is a bad motivator unless youre incredibly autistic because although localizations are shit sometimes, they're a lot more accessible than spending years to learn Japanese. If you find more reasons to learn it and see it as less of a chore and more of an experience you'll make more progress. And learn to accept ambiguity. If you don't fully understand something than don't stress out about it as with enough exposure it will eventually click. The language learning process is kind of like a skyscraper for me, as when you're studying, you put down a metaphorical scaffolding, but when you finish that part of your tower, it solidifies but you don't even remember how you learned it and it just clicks (like how we can't really explain what "the" means).

Less than 6 months are needed to read manga or play games with a dictionary. If you have any hatred in soul, 6 months and a dictionary is a small price to pay.

You will make mistakes. It's necessary. If you can't accept mistakes then you cannot learn a language. It's incredibly humiliating and embarrassing. My lack of motivation and embarrassment is what made me personally quit learning languages all together even though I enjoyed the discovery and studying grammar and etymology and what-not

The irony is that the ease of access to Japan and Japanese language is exactly why it's not the special magical place it was even 20 years ago. Their media is still the best, but there is no competition.

It's fucked how hard trannylators ruined the entire opening chapter of this game. The rest of the game is fine enough, but it's hard to recommend this to anyone when their first 8 hours in this game is going to be nothing but this dogshit. I don't know how the rest of the game came out unscathed, having to translate all of comedy route probably did them in and they just did their jobs properly after.
I will say that Darumi's route is one of the few routes written well, but that's probably because the main writer wrote that route himself instead of passing it to the others.

>>
>>745761458
The reason you learn Japanese isnt to play games that you cant play in English its to play games in Japanese. When a Japanese game gets translated into a different language its fundamentally changed and every phrase and every word no matter how literal the translation is evokes a completely different image in your brain. When an English speaker reads the word "Princess" the imagery is completely different compared to when a Japanese speaker reads the word 姫. The dictionary will tell you they mean the same thing but when the language is different the story is different. Certain personalities will have different analogues in different cultures, a sarcastic or brash character will be perceived differently in different languages and you will associate them differently, ultimately missing connection with the original voice and thats the most important point. Getting the story firsthand will always be the better experience to getting a story secondhand or often thirdhand by way of a sick game of telephone through chatGPT. I always say consuming a translation is a cucked experience akin to having a story read to you at bedtime by your father. Too pathetic to read it yourself little guy do you want me to leave the light on?

did you know that in dragon quest monsters 3, one of the main characters is named "toilen trubble?" i know it sounds like "toilet trouble" but this is actually a character that appeared in DQ5. you see, his translated name is toilen trubble because he stands behind a cauldron. in dragon quest six there's a kid named john that gives you the flying bed after you fulfill his dying wish. just kidding, john is his japanese name. in english, they called him "matt tress." i have literally hundreds of examples of dragon quest translators doing this bullshit, and they do it in every game. they also love the fucking word "luminary" they use it so many times in many contexts and it doesn't work in any of them.

This reminds me how quiet, reticent girls (Rei Ayanami, Yuki Nagato etc) were often called "gothish" and localized as such, because goth culture was big at the time and we didn't have an English equivalent label that fit better. Localizations and dubs of that era ruined so many great girls.

This is a square-enix meme. In FF14 you have the Golden Legacy Expansion. But in English it's Dawntrail, and there's the Dawnservant, and there's a bunch of Dawn things to the point where the word has zero meaning.
