>>745884914>The ship originally had a more elongated appearance, but this design's similarity to the Eagle Transporters in Space: 1999 prompted George Lucas to change the Falcon's design.[2] The original model was modified, re-scaled, and used as Princess Leia's ship, Tantive IV.[3] Modelmaker Joe Johnston had about four weeks to redesign the Falcon, and Lucas' only suggestion to Johnston was to "think of a flying saucer".[4] Johnston did not want to produce a "basic flying saucer", so he created the offset cockpit, forward cargo mandibles, and rear slot for the engines.[4] It was also said that the shape of the ship was roughly based on a hamburger with an olive-on-the-side cockpit. The design was simple enough to create in the four-week window. Johnston called production of the new Falcon design one of his most intense projects.[4]>It has been noted that the cockpit with its greenhouse-style window was likely inspired by the cockpit of the American B-29 Superfortress.[6][7][8]You've been sippin on too much wookiepedia

>>745884914>originality meant to be a space-tug a cargo pusher. Is that why you posted some bullshit fanart that didn't exist until after disney bought the franchise? The falcon looks like the falcon because the guy who was in charge of designing it went out to get a burger. It had a toothpick with an olive in the bun, which he removed. He took a bite of the burger, set it down on the plate, and the shape of the burger with the bite removed, and the olive sitting to the side of it is what made him go "THAT'S OUR HERO SHIP!"

Except that destroyer which still look like a blade.Their only weak design was the mothership, but destroying the cruiser-making part of the Vaygr shipyard was pretty. The Hiigaran ship and your pic are built horizontally like the usual space boat, bit flatter than usual. In total contrast with their mothership, actually the Hiigaran mothership and its round form really don't follow the same design code.

>>745885678>no reason to give them any other shape>bricks>constraining your design with right angles & flat surfaceFFFForm Follow Function.Even with fictional physics, the technologies would have practical need:- mass isn't free,- neither is structural stress, having front thruster that pull mass actually give benefit,- you'll want docking bays with cranes that can move thing around,- you'll want sensors on mast, maybe the sensor is so big the mast is more like a bridge,- maybe your reactors are radioactive so you want them spread away from everything else- maybe your propellant tank can be exchanged so you want room for multiple size- or you'll want to maximize the number of turret that can look in a directionAnd don't get me started on realistic physics, armor is essentially futile and you are better spreading redundant subsystem.Ironically I can still justify a realistic warship that look like a gigantic brick.

>>745884914Excuse me, but it's Transparisteel and not glass.
>>745891561Dead ahead seems easy enough. And it doesn't need to be your only weapon, just the big one. Also space-combat wouldn't be like star wars, or old ship of the line combat, engaging a ship within an AU of you would be close quarters combat. You're sniping with hyper-kinetic kill vehicles and particle beams from the oort belt, and dropping rocks on planets until they surrender or are pacified. It would be more like submarine warfare than anything else, but with no element of stealth since its virtually impossible to not stick out like a sore thumb because you're using fusion drives that leave a glowing trail of plasma thousands and thousands of kilometers long, or you're using a warp drive that would send up an absolutely massive spray of highly charged particles that were crossing the warp field when it generated and just got sling-shot out in every direction and blue-shifted into gamma and x-rays. In order to make space combat exciting you've got to create excuses for why things operate like that (like why everyone is sword fighting in dune). I remember Master of Orion 3, a piece of shit game the dev's abandoned because they got defense contracts to program smart bombs. I remember the "tactical combat" screen was cool. You could design and arm your ships, and you had fighters, beam weapons, and indirect fire weapons. You didn't directly control them, but you designed the ships, and the combat would render with the two fleets at a distance unleashing fighters that would slowly fly and either be point defense, anti-point defense, or bombers, while beam and macross missile spam spewed out of the different fleets until the enemy withdrew or was wiped out. Was fun to watch your overpowered shitkicker fleet annihilate some random pirate encounter.

>>745891379Well here's a function for you: curved structures are significantly more expensive to manufacture and repair, the cheapest most utilitarian design would be a rectangle big enough to fit everything you need inside, with R&D better spent into how to package everything more tightly within the given hull rather than slapping random shapes on it just to house every individual module you can think of.

>>745900703The A-wing is so bad its propensity for being the fastest coffin money can buy survived a canon revamp through sheer will. The A-wing, or "How to look cool and die fast" is what happens when A Kuat Engineer snuck into the back of Sienar systems to see the assembly of the first TIE Interceptor and thinking "A cheap fast and basic starfighter with the survivability of wet paper, great! Let's make it faster, let's make it not cheap, let's make it even faster, let's make it without the numbers that TIEs are built around" and his Rebel friend, hearing all this, decides "Yeah we aint got Empire pilot numbers but I sure do like going ing FAST"Fast but not easy, you're basically flying two engines strapped to your when its just seen two twileks kissing. In a navy that is just full of "I'm the best pilot ever but discipline" jocks there's only one way to compensate for the missing inches of limp- decent piloting and "Well I can fly an A-wing and not die" is there for people who have a hopelessly high rate of optimism and a will already written. The most famous victory of an A-wing pilot is driving himself into the bridge of a Star Destroyer. This is actually remarkable as it did come at the end of the war between the Empire and the Rebel alliance, since it is frankly ing AMAZING a-wing pilots survived this long. In the new canon they are given a fresh introduction, and promptly do nothing but ing explode.A-wings are the thinking man's suicide note. In a desperate struggle to be the slickest spacer this side of Duros young hotshots sign up for a one-way ticket into either ploughing into the ing ground, being the first into the frey and into fire in the wet tissue paper tiger, and just generally being the coolest guy in the dogfight because they're already exposed to the vacuum of space.(The fucking hearts are not my choice but I found this on a steam comment)

>>745885678Space debris are still a pretty big concern in inhabited space, and a brick would have bigger surface area for a pebble to tear through the hull when going at sub light speeds. The most optimal space ships are probably like the ones depicted in the Expanse, just giant skyscrapers with multiple floors pointing towards the main thruster at the bottom so that the inertia of movement simulates gravity. At the 50% point of a journey the ship flips for gradual deceleration. Because of the long skyscraper shape, there's minimal surface area at the front/top, and you can slap 360 degree auto turrets or rail guns all along the sides for no blind spots. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DhsBnmZla-M&pp=ygUUZXhwYW5zZSBzcGFjZSBiYXR0bGU%3D

>>745903163>There's no friction in spaceEh, depends on the speeds and duration of travel. Space isn't empty, and the closer to light speed you get, the harder loose hydrogen atoms hit. Or, even at slower speeds one wants to minimize the ship forward vector area to avoid collisions with micrometeors and such over centuries of travel.
>>745913415Something about slapping ww1-2 era naval guns on anything makes it instantly cooler. Space ships, robots, buildings, dinosaurs, anime girls, food it doesn't matter.
>>745914245As much as I like hard-SF, I believe that those ships are more a case of applying cold-war naval warfare with a NASApunk design. There are reasons to think we won't have conventional warship in a space war, it's more likely to be interplanetary spam of cheap missile spam, using space-tug whose only job is to give the initial velocity, detach the missile, then cancel its acceleration and go back to base. For a genocidal war at least. There's a way to justify warship, but it's tricky and make their into glorified police ship.It is if everyone is so afraid of debris they'll put all the money on weapons meant to safely neutralize targets without starting a Kessler effect.
