After 28 years of looking at aircrafts from all movies, videogames, concept art, anime, I still like the atmospheric jet from Neucom, Delphinus r103 the most pleasing, it feels like my own soul, but nobody can render it properly, less modeled/animated it into a game (no game engine support), this world is truly a nightmare. >The ship originally had a more elongated appearance, but this design's similarity to the Eagle Transporters in Space: 1999 prompted George Lucas to change the Falcon's design.[2] The original model was modified, re-scaled, and used as Princess Leia's ship, Tantive IV.[3] Modelmaker Joe Johnston had about four weeks to redesign the Falcon, and Lucas' only suggestion to Johnston was to "think of a flying saucer".[4] Johnston did not want to produce a "basic flying saucer", so he created the offset cockpit, forward cargo mandibles, and rear slot for the engines.[4] It was also said that the shape of the ship was roughly based on a hamburger with an olive-on-the-side cockpit. The design was simple enough to create in the four-week window. Johnston called production of the new Falcon design one of his most intense projects.[4]
>It has been noted that the cockpit with its greenhouse-style window was likely inspired by the cockpit of the American B-29 Superfortress.[6][7][8]

To be fair, it was just supposed to be an exploration mothership with production capability if they needed something, and escort job also including drawing the fire away.
If the Hyperspace core was as divine as the lore made it out, the ship would be moving with the fleet over any distance.

Is that why you posted some bullshit fanart that didn't exist until after disney bought the franchise?
The falcon looks like the falcon because the guy who was in charge of designing it went out to get a burger. It had a toothpick with an olive in the bun, which he removed. He took a bite of the burger, set it down on the plate, and the shape of the burger with the bite removed, and the olive sitting to the side of it is what made him go "THAT'S OUR HERO SHIP!"

It was imagined as a cargo pusher from its beginning. You are just a young contrarian mindlessly defending whatever is now the current product.
They don't give a shit, if they felt the need to make a rework they'd change it as they please.

Starwars may not have been a particularly coherent setting to begin with, but your kind is to blame for publishers thinking your memory don't go past 2~3 years.

Are you crazy?
The Vaygr aesthetic was perfection!
Almost all of their ships are like blade or daggers ready to slice you. Except that destroyer which still look like a blade.
Their only weak design was the mothership, but destroying the cruiser-making part of the Vaygr shipyard was pretty.

The Hiigaran ship and your pic are built horizontally like the usual space boat, bit flatter than usual.
In total contrast with their mothership, actually the Hiigaran mothership and its round form really don't follow the same design code.

>no reason to give them any other shape
>bricks
>constraining your design with right angles & flat surface
FFF
Form Follow Function.

Even with fictional physics, the technologies would have practical need:
- mass isn't free,
- neither is structural stress, having front thruster that pull mass actually give benefit,
- you'll want docking bays with cranes that can move thing around,
- you'll want sensors on mast, maybe the sensor is so big the mast is more like a bridge,
- maybe your reactors are radioactive so you want them spread away from everything else
- maybe your propellant tank can be exchanged so you want room for multiple size
- or you'll want to maximize the number of turret that can look in a direction

And don't get me started on realistic physics, armor is essentially futile and you are better spreading redundant subsystem.
Ironically I can still justify a realistic warship that look like a gigantic brick.

Dead ahead seems easy enough. And it doesn't need to be your only weapon, just the big one.
Also space-combat wouldn't be like star wars, or old ship of the line combat, engaging a ship within an AU of you would be close quarters combat.
You're sniping with hyper-kinetic kill vehicles and particle beams from the oort belt, and dropping rocks on planets until they surrender or are pacified.
It would be more like submarine warfare than anything else, but with no element of stealth since its virtually impossible to not stick out like a sore thumb because you're using fusion drives that leave a glowing trail of plasma thousands and thousands of kilometers long, or you're using a warp drive that would send up an absolutely massive spray of highly charged particles that were crossing the warp field when it generated and just got sling-shot out in every direction and blue-shifted into gamma and x-rays.
In order to make space combat exciting you've got to create excuses for why things operate like that (like why everyone is sword fighting in dune).
I remember Master of Orion 3, a piece of shit game the dev's abandoned because they got defense contracts to program smart bombs. I remember the "tactical combat" screen was cool. You could design and arm your ships, and you had fighters, beam weapons, and indirect fire weapons. You didn't directly control them, but you designed the ships, and the combat would render with the two fleets at a distance unleashing fighters that would slowly fly and either be point defense, anti-point defense, or bombers, while beam and macross missile spam spewed out of the different fleets until the enemy withdrew or was wiped out.
Was fun to watch your overpowered shitkicker fleet annihilate some random pirate encounter.

Well here's a function for you: curved structures are significantly more expensive to manufacture and repair, the cheapest most utilitarian design would be a rectangle big enough to fit everything you need inside, with R&D better spent into how to package everything more tightly within the given hull rather than slapping random shapes on it just to house every individual module you can think of.

I actually liked the way the resourcing was handled, having a single micro-carrier with four all-purpose resource collectors attached to it. It's just a shame they hamstring you into only having a few of them at once. Also shame on them for what they offered for the DLCs, the Somtaaw got a decent upgrade in looks for the Acolyte, but none of the mechanics. I guess combination mode is too much to ask of a team that couldn't even keep units in formation.

More angular & flat surface, sure.
Big dumb rectangle? That's contrarian-level retarded.

The function of not forcing everything in a rectangular form is to make the ship more efficient.
It's plain retarded to believe everything will neatly fit in (square) "module". All you are doing is pushing the 10% overcost of outer armor, into a 200% overcost of everything inside, which is the hardest part to manufacture.

Realistically mass is crazy costly, worse any expense to get rid of it.

The A-wing is so bad its propensity for being the fastest coffin money can buy survived a canon revamp through sheer will.

The A-wing, or "How to look cool and die fast" is what happens when A Kuat Engineer snuck into the back of Sienar systems to see the assembly of the first TIE Interceptor and thinking "A cheap fast and basic starfighter with the survivability of wet paper, great! Let's make it faster, let's make it not cheap, let's make it even faster, let's make it without the numbers that TIEs are built around" and his Rebel friend, hearing all this, decides "Yeah we aint got Empire pilot numbers but I sure do like going ing FAST"

Fast but not easy, you're basically flying two engines strapped to your when its just seen two twileks kissing. In a navy that is just full of "I'm the best pilot ever but discipline" jocks there's only one way to compensate for the missing inches of limp- decent piloting and "Well I can fly an A-wing and not die" is there for people who have a hopelessly high rate of optimism and a will already written.

The most famous victory of an A-wing pilot is driving himself into the bridge of a Star Destroyer. This is actually remarkable as it did come at the end of the war between the Empire and the Rebel alliance, since it is frankly ing AMAZING a-wing pilots survived this long. In the new canon they are given a fresh introduction, and promptly do nothing but ing explode.

A-wings are the thinking man's suicide note. In a desperate struggle to be the slickest spacer this side of Duros young hotshots sign up for a one-way ticket into either ploughing into the ing ground, being the first into the frey and into fire in the wet tissue paper tiger, and just generally being the coolest guy in the dogfight because they're already exposed to the vacuum of space.

(The fucking hearts are not my choice but I found this on a steam comment)

In the first farsight book the tau get jumped in the gulf, and they manage to damage an heavily damage an imperial cruiser, and when it starts veering towards them they assume the the navigation went out and and ignore it until they realize its changing course and heading straight for them and they're positively baffled by a ramming action since it would destroy BOTH ships.

That and all the other little bits along the top where there were exposed pipes and engine parts. The Falcon had lots of little rectangular holes all over the top, that the Solo movie filled with the newer finish.
>>
>>745903151
Pretty much. No one ever thought much of the A-Wing at all except it was a little known, lesser used ship seen among the many many others in ROTJ.
Then Disneywars decided to make it the stormtrooper of rebel ships that was totally ineffectual against anyone else, and routinely popped like balloons in fights. Darth Vader just went 1v20 of them and killed them all in one episode. In a TIE fighter.

True,
Technically, the Solo movie pretend that was the original state of the ship, and the hole appeared later.

It reminds me one reason given for the Y-wing being so (lewdly) exposed is that the mechanic had to constantly remove the panels to get to the parts and ended up not putting them back. Given how the Alliance would have to escape the Empire quickly, I would easily imagine them not bothering to pack the cover.

Space debris are still a pretty big concern in inhabited space, and a brick would have bigger surface area for a pebble to tear through the hull when going at sub light speeds. The most optimal space ships are probably like the ones depicted in the Expanse, just giant skyscrapers with multiple floors pointing towards the main thruster at the bottom so that the inertia of movement simulates gravity. At the 50% point of a journey the ship flips for gradual deceleration. Because of the long skyscraper shape, there's minimal surface area at the front/top, and you can slap 360 degree auto turrets or rail guns all along the sides for no blind spots.

Basically the original idea, was that while your mothership was on an expedition to save Hiigara, you have another front, fighting Gate after Gate to stop the Vaygr.
This, of course, meant fighting around the gigantic structure (seen >>745887246) that appeared in a video shown at E3 if I remember correctly.
But at the time, the gigantic structure was straining all the computers of the time, if I had to bet, the AI likely also couldn't follow.

This pic, is supposed to have been among the concept art.

So basically, the feature that only made it into HW3.

Best general scifi ships are from Star Citizen. Shame the game is ass, so those cool designs will die on that trasheap.
However you're all faggots and need to take a look at hard scifi ships. Their fights are also much more interesting than naval fight recreations in space. There's not many hard scifi games tho.

>>
>>745903163
>There's no friction in space
Eh, depends on the speeds and duration of travel. Space isn't empty, and the closer to light speed you get, the harder loose hydrogen atoms hit. Or, even at slower speeds one wants to minimize the ship forward vector area to avoid collisions with micrometeors and such over centuries of travel.

As much as I like hard-SF, I believe that those ships are more a case of applying cold-war naval warfare with a NASApunk design.

There are reasons to think we won't have conventional warship in a space war, it's more likely to be interplanetary spam of cheap missile spam, using space-tug whose only job is to give the initial velocity, detach the missile, then cancel its acceleration and go back to base.
For a genocidal war at least.

There's a way to justify warship, but it's tricky and make their into glorified police ship.
It is if everyone is so afraid of debris they'll put all the money on weapons meant to safely neutralize targets without starting a Kessler effect.

I don't even think Sajuuk is special from the ancient civilization POV. Wasn't it just a line battleship and the other progenitor super ships we fight aren't even built for combat?

IE Sajuuk is big but not ultra special.

>mission where you open the ancient gate while facing impossible odds and it's just objective: survive

It had its moments. I honestly believe the story and character writing is the main issue now that it's been a bit and I can think more objectively.

Most of the content was cut. No one know if they had a special ship for the progenitor.
But if their foundry ship is any indication?
If the RUINS they left behind are any indication? Yeah, they likely had even bigger ships.

Remember this ship we see as a final weapon of the Vaygr?
It was supposed to be a whole different species.

That would cease working the moment the ship stopped accelerating. It would have to accelerate perpetually at exactly the right speed to "simulate gravity". You dont feel the back of the cars seat pushing you if you arent accelerating.

>If the RUINS they left behind are any indication? Yeah, they likely had even bigger ships.

Yeah that's what I mean. I always figured Sajuuk is just one battleship / battlecruiser they built. No different to them than the mass of the things we or the Vaygr build by the endgame.

It's also interesting to me that they refer to the newly created cores in HW3 as synthetic cores. despite showing no limitations vs the "real thing." Are they really? Are the originals not just manufactured? It would seem S'jet is too humble in their achievements.

Part of how you know HW2 was a broken product with only a third of the content.

bro lots of space games have ramming mechanics and playstyles that encourage that shit
>>
>people wondering why ships don't just become massive squares
Setting aside the physics side, of which I have no understanding, you end up making your ship a larger target on its front by doing this. Seems better to me to slim down the front face as much as possible so that anyone firing on your front will have a smaller target.
>but this makes other side (much) larger targets
Yes, but engagements where enemies get good firing angles into your flanks probably shouldn't be comparable in number to engagements where the enemies are in front of you.

That shit makes 0 sense. Unless lower half of the ship is made of unobtanium or has a massive plasma/EM field shielding from thrusters and point defences and retracted/covered weapon nacelles, its lower part is vulnerable and a blind spot. Space is multidimensional, not planar like surface of the sea/ocean or land. Shitfucked design.

>>
>>745954703
Real space ships will never be setup like this. They will be oriented like skyscrapers with floors perpendicular to the long axis. That way they can provide some artificial gravity during accelerations. A ship like yours and the crew would just fall to the stern as soon as the engines started

Spaceships have a good excuse for being asymmetric, non-aerodynamic lumps, and they can look cool on their own terms with that in mind. A jet, even a fictional one, is supposedly designed to fly in the air and is thus a wholly different thing.
