Yes games in general have always been licenses.There was a weird period there for awhile, in the console space, between Atari and PS2 where games functioned more as "media" than "software". Something closer to music CDs or movie VHS than Turbotax or Photoshop. And this created a certain illusion that they were different than the later. But they aren't.The time to "fight against" this was 2008, when a console game getting patched stopped being seen as a huge fuckup and an embarassment on the part of the developer, into a common, or even wanted feature i.e. "this game is no longer updated, trash". But I honestly think gamers want things the way they are. We wouldn't end up here if they didn't. They love achievements and trophies, ecosystems and friends lists, DLC, online multiplayer all that stuff that "being a software" enables. I just can't envision a current year when the PS5 comes out with limited "multiplayer only and only for like 2 years while the publishers can be fucked to pay for servers no updates" connectivity like PS2, with no online store or account system or updates or anything. And when you get down to it, it doesn't matter anyway. Pirates were preserve everything. Even today when some PS2 game hits $300, $400, $1000 (Kuon) on the second hand market, people just pirate it. Assuming they bother with real hardware at all. And in 25 years (minimum) when the PS5 license servers go offline, the same will happen.
