A console that they fucked up because they dragged their heels making and releasing it and then never bothered to give it any real support.

There was no way it was gonna be a game changer but they could have carved a small niche for themselves and with Sony and Microsoft sucking cock right now they could have *maybe* tried to edge in a little bit with a follow up right now if they hadn't fucked up as bad as they did.

Tbh they might be thinking of trying it anyway.

>>745920884
I've notice that they've been weirdly really aggressive about licensing out their library to make as much cash as possible and buying up a fuckload of old IP, as well as fucking about with more and more capable retroconsoles and portables. Sony and Microsoft are never gonna be weaker in console terms than they are right now, most likely, and most of the Jaguar's [very few] good games weren't made by them anyway, so they *might* try a VCS 2 or some fucked up Lynx descendent with physical carts [they've been kissing up to the evercade guys a lot] but it's pretty unlikely.

More realistically, they might try Doing Something like actually developing a new AAA game based on one of their IP and testing the waters to maybe try pulling some shit when the PS6 inevitably comes out and chokes to death, MAYBE.

Atari fucked themselves in the ass so many times in the past though that it's made them hypercautious about doing anything other than catering to the ever dwindling market of 2600 purists, which in turn ironically has made them continue to fuck themselves in the ass repeatedly whenever they DO almost muster the balls to do anything substantial, so they might have figured out they need to take it a bit slow and prepare first with shit like resources and an actual fucking plan to test the waters this time around.

is right that Xbox and Sony, especially Sony, are basically never gonna be weaker and they have been both buying a lot of shit, making a lot of hardware, and selling a lot of their collections on fucking everything even more than normal.

"Atari Sabertooth or Lion or Bobcat or some shit" and some kind of performative declaration of a new Console war with Nintendo with physical games to prey on Sony's weakness seems at least plausible.

>>
>>745927372
>or some fucked up Lynx descendent with physical carts
I don't think its unlikely. They just did a 2600+ and 7800+. The next logical step would either be a Lynx+ or an Atari 800+. These things run on what's basically a microcontroller, so they're not really effected by the RAM crisis. Hell, they could even add a mode for playing games utilizing the hardware natively instead of just emulating old consoles, that would allow for much more advanced graphics.

Atari hasn't been Atari since 1996. Atari Corp (the computer and console Atari, not to be confused with arcade Atari who got spun out after the console crash of '83 by Warner and Bamco and eventually got.bought and shut down by Midway in 2000, then required by Warner after Midway died in 2009) had it's assets and branding bought by Hasbro Interactive, who got bought by Infogrames, who rebranded as Atari, who was mutineered by Frédéric Chesnais who gutted the company during it's 2013 bankruptcy to go all in on online casinos, the Ataribox, cryptocurrencies and plans for Atari casinos that never materialised. Wade Rosen of Ziggurat Interactive bought out Atari in 2021, culled all the gambling shit and currently heads the Atari we know now.

The lynx was a disaster and had all of 3 good games, none of them strongly coated in nostalgia, unlike the 2600 and the 7800 which at least had decent libraries for their time and historical prestige. And the Jaguar isn't much better with how it had barely anything considered worthwhile that was actually made by Atari.

Unironically a steamdeck clone or switch style hybrid with 1 or 2 AA Atari exclusives seem legitimately more likely and its still retardedly unlikely to happen.

Whatever it is though it's definitely bigger than just retroclones of failed consoles nobody liked that have spent the last several decades being shit on, they've been spending money to make money like fucking crazy lately by Atari standards and building a fat fucking warchest. They sold the movie rights to fucking Asteroids and a pile of other games for millions a pop apparently, you don't do shit like that unless you're planning to put that money to work.
>>
>>745920884
Ok, so I looked into it and the Atari 2600+ uses a Rockchip RK3128, which is somewhere around the power of a higher end Pentium 4. That would put it well above the power of an original Xbox, and have it pushing the power of a 360, at least in terms of CPU. And it has 256MB of RAM.

They could totally make a Jaguar successor with that hardware, do retro style 3d stuff on it about on part with what you would've seen in the late 6th gen or Wii. They could probably even manage modern looking 2d games on it.

it exists in the same way microprose still exists, in that someone bought the brand. unlike microprose though, they're not using the brand to publish new games, they haven't done much other than coast off old IPs and threaten to sue openTTD if they don't require people to pay them 10 bucks first.
>>
>>745923075
It's had a long history of changing hands. The original Atari died in 1985, and the name got sold to Tramel Corporation for home consoles and a joint venture between Warner Communications and Namco for coin-op Arcades.
Then JT Storage bought the assets of the home console side in 1996, and passed the intellectual property on to Hasbro, who used it as a sub-brand of Hasbro Interactive.
The arcade side got folded into Midway around this time, too, and went defunct when the arcade business dried up not long after.

Then Infogrames bought Hasbro Interactive, and adopted the Atari name for themselves in 2001. They've been Atari ever since then.

Which is to say, Infogrames has operated under the Atari name for over twice as long as the original company did. So there's no real reason not to call them Atari, unless you're just that much of a Nolan Bushnell hardliner, for some reason.
>>
>>745936505
Yeah, they've been massively overengineering these things for a bit. It's honestly one of the biggest arguments for "Atari has been trying to relearn how to build a console."
>>
>>745936393
The 7800 was a flop too yet people still bought the 7800+. The Lynx is looked back on fondly by Atari fans and retro collectors, who are the people they sell to.

Anyways, it could be an Atari home computer clone. Those did do really well. Atari basically lived off its home computer line during the video game crash and the failure of the 5200. There's loads of good games for that, and other companies (mainly Commodore) have already done well in the retro computer clone space lately. I'd certainly be interested in an Atari 800+ or 1200+.
>>
>>745936714
Its not really overengineering. They probably just took the cheapest ARM SOC they could source reliably and used it to base their consoles on. Its why all those chinkheld companies also use Rockchip processors. It being strong enough to run Xbox and Wii tier stuff natively is just a happy accident.
>>
>>745936665
they weren't really using the brand for gaming until pretty recently, in 2021 they went
>we should use the Atari brand to get back into gaming, gaming is really booming right now.
before that they were mainly doing casino/crypto shit.

Apparently the ceo that took over in 2021 really likes gaming and is the main driving force of all the atari remasters and ip games being put out the past five years.

Not to mention nightdive.
>>
>>745927212
how exactly does that "sound stupid"
are you a moron?
>>
>>745936925
That was between 2013 and 2021, under Frederic Chesnais. Who had brain worms or something making him completely fucking retarded. He ran the company into the ground with that gambling shit. I have to assume he thought it'd help him step on Konami's shoes in those industries. As if it was the brand stamped inside the service door that mattered, and not the fact that Konami had been in that industry from day one.
Ever since 2021, they've had a guy who actually wants to make video games in charge. They license their old worthless IPs out to Raw Thrills to make easy money in what's left of the Arcade space, and try to salvage whatever else they can, like Bubsy, by handing that shit out to medium sized indie devs with some pedigree.

Their biggest mistake is always announcing shit way too early and letting the iron get cold. Bubsy 4D would have sold a fuckton of copies if it released the week after it was announced, but the novelty of the prospect of a good Bubsy game wore off before anyone even played it.

>>745938145
I’ve been watching retrospectives on the jaguar recently and it’s really nuts to see how poorly the whole thing went. They just didn’t have any actual games on the thing, it’s like they decided to pour so much into the console without any actual desire to make a game worth showcasing why you’d buy the damn thing. It certainly didn’t help that they had such piss poor third party support, but when their only ideas seemed to be movie adaptation games I guess it was deserved

The Atari 7800 outsold Sega in the US at the time and did alright. It made its costs back nicely and even turned a reasonable profit, but it just wasn't the NES, nothing was, and it wasn't a huge deal overseas either, unlike how the Master System made a fortune in Brazil and Europe. It's not really accurate to call it a "flop" when it made solid dosh, it just wasn't what Atari wanted it to be, which was a NES killer capable of giving them dominance in the market again.

A lot of modern companies are. MGM in particular has gone through so many incarnations it will make your head spin, the company that existed from 1938 to 1980 is legally owned by Hilton now, because the original MGM spun off its film operations to be MGM Grand Hotels Inc., which was sold to Bally (casino operators) with Kirk Kerkorian retaining rights to the MGM Grand name, then Bally got bought by Hilton (later they spun off the casino operations, but that didn't include subsidiaries).

Seriously though, have you seen the store page on Atari's website. They sell lots of useful stuff. Plenty of new physical releases for the 2600 and 7600 in addition to reprints. New controllers to replace the 50 year old ones we've been stuck with. Clone consoles that play physical carts. Wireless controllers that don't require D-cell batteries or need an antenna the size of my arm.

That's a lot more than a reprinted plastic model. Chiefly because unlike a plastic model, electronics wear out and die, even if perfectly stored.

I'm not kidding about how close they are. Between this, the self-awareness about sexualized fanart, and even soliciting some as part of the marketing campaign, they're as close as you can get to just committing to porn without actually doing it.

>New controllers to replace the 50 year old ones we've been stuck with.
That's trivial to do. It's five dogshit membrane buttons on the simplest PCB you could make. The injection molded parts might seriously cost as much as the PCB does. They're probably making $20 in profit on a $25 product.
>>
>>745943387
Ok, but I don't injection molding equipment nor do I have the machinery to manufacture custom PCBs. Nor do I know what electrical signals the 2600 uses. I also don't know how the paddle controllers are made.

Also this is more of a nitpick, but Atari joysticks aren't membrane based. They use metal switches. That's why they're so stiff.

They don't.

They're going to announce the assasination of all the ai ceos and the politicans that prop them up and usher us into a golden age of affordable hardware
>>

Original CX40 joysticks did use metal switches.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZOir9eGvWw
>>
>>745943689
Is that one of the new ones? This is what the internals of an original look like. They have a metal spring in the single button, and they flex those brass tabs you see there to register joystick movement. Though I suppose they do also have rubber on the bottom of the stick, so I was half wrong about that.
>>
>>745943772
>>745943854
I was talking about the new ones, because I was making a point about how dead-simple and cheap they are to make. You might as well have said something about the manually drawn PCB traces.
>>
>>745943987
Cheap to make as they may be, they would not be cheap or simple for me to make. So its still good for someone to be manufacturing them so I don't have to deal with second hand goods exclusively.

Because there was next to no marketing after the initial announcement, had no developer deals for an actual launch lineup, and barely had any post release support
>>
>>745920884
Atari literally hasn't actually been Atari since they got acquired by Infogrames back in 2009. It's just a skinwalker publishing company now, they don't produce anything.

The current head of Atari was mentored by Nolan Bushnell himself and cares deeply about Atari's legacy.

This may not be the "original" Atari, but it's as close as you're ever gonna get.

If Richard Garriot got the rights to Ultima back, he is now working with Atari. A remake of an old Wizardry, or a new Wizardry game. Hopefully, it's Rush 3, with Barry Leitch composing again.

Are they announcing that they're selling the name and branding to a more competent company that has ideas that isn't "Let's remake Atari hardware as expensive as possible using the cheaper parts/emulation"?
>>
>>745967104
They don't have strong IPs like Sega to afford sticking to just software and they don't have the budget to make any successful modern hardware as demonstrated by the VCS 800.
Literally what else could they do but sell nostalgiabait merch to millenials?

I guess effectively, they exist "again". Infogrames never really fully went away, but for a long time they did like slot machines, or crypto, or other dumb bullshit.
Sometime during 2020 IIRC, the company got a new CEO and he basically went "this company is literally just known for videogames, wtf are we doing anything else for".
Since then they basically tried to resurrect as a sort of retro game-focused publisher. Snatching up rights for ancient games/franchises on the cheap, sometimes trying to do something a little more with them. Apparently it's been going fairly well.
The new Bubsy games was apparently also that CEO going "this is a character literally everyone knows, wtf is the point letting him rot", which is kind of a comically pragmatic way of viewing it.
>>
>>745920884
I imagine it's either an official emulator that plays a lot of Atari games. Like that mini 2600 thing they made.
Or it's a knock off Steam Deck with Atari branding

the only thing that would be big is them going back to making consoles—

What if it is a console?
Not a competitor to the big three but specifically a retro one since it's a big trend nowadays even among zoomers and alfa. And you don't need any advanced fancy ramsticks for this.
