It's not "cheaping out", retard. That was the obvious end of the story. It's exactly this brainlet question that led to MGS4 being made.

Anyways, I wouldn't have written stupid shit like Liquid Ocelot hypnotizing himself which somehow manages to fool an ultra advanced genius level world economy controlling AI, or Big Boss coming back from the dead to have a big exposition monologue, or 2 hours of Guy That Poops Himself romance. But ultimately, even if I wrote something that wasn't absolute garbage like MGS4, it would never be on the same level as the first three games because it's completely unnecessary and only brainlets wanted it.

Nothing went wrong. It destroyed all of Metal Gear's mythos and story in order to show people that endless sequels with needless information on video game worlds is useless. It's essentially just Kojima laughing in the face of his most diehard, idiotic fans, and I'm all for it. MGS2 already was that to an extent with Raiden and all the commentary about digital training, and MGSV just doubles down on it by giving them an empty, barren game that invalidates their Big Boss power fantasy. MGS4 is just the most extreme version of that and it's funny.

He just didn't want to make this one and was going through a midlife crisis, so it's whole story is just dogshit that veers between contempt for the series and embarrassing fanservice with lots of metaphors for where Kojima was in life at the time and how he felt about the series and industry. And it doesn't work at all with the previous games and ruined the future story of the series.
>>
>>745935834

>>
>>745935930
That's not what it says though. All of the core dialogue is done by Kojima, including all of the shit you probably call "prophetic" in MGS2. Fukushima just does a lot of the optional codec stuff, which he has stated is inspired by Kojima's own writing.
>>
>>745935914

>>745935994
Well I don't think it's all dogshit for one but even if it was it's pretty common for artists to get worse as they age and loose their spark. Francis Ford Coppola hasn't made a good movie in 30 years.

>>745935957

"Dogshit" is strong. He never made anything as truly terrible as MGS4 since. As for why he's past been past his peak for decades, that stuff just happens all the time to all sorts of creatives. Look at Tim Cain, for example. Or Avellone even before he got cancelled.
>>
>>745936130
Or Spielberg, or Paul Thomas Anderson, or Oasis, or Metallica.
>>
>>745929565
The writers were forced into giving that character wings but they weren't given enough screentime to do it, since the third season was only a half season instead of a full 26. If they were going to give her wings at all, it should've been a byproduct of absorbing the magic from the 3 princesses (and then a leftover of said magic) during the season 4 finale. Anyways, it's funny people still complain about it all these years later. The night where it was revealed and the MGS4 song played over the board was hilariously kino.
>>
>>745935631
2 isn't that bad.
>>
>>745935991
Not the impression the author of that article has given it says "those dialogues sometimes drag on for an hour at a time."
The stuff retards call "prophetic" would be the hour long codec calls towards the end of the game, right...?
>>
>>745935602
>That was the obvious end of the story.
MGS2 ends on a cliffhanger and has several dangling plot threads.
>>
>>745934860
>>Used nanomachines and psychotherapy to transplant Liquid's personality onto his own

I never liked this as it felt like a last minute asspull when in the world of MGS with ghosts, psychics, nanomachines, and crazy technology, everyone was already on board for Liquid himself or some type of ghost being able to possess Ocelot then just maybe at the end, Ocelot dies and Liquid dies with him.
>>
>>745936340
There's some extra quotes about Fukushima outside of articles like this. I guess I should've provided those instead, my bad. I'd recommend reading this article by Snakesoup, but here's some choice quotes.

https://thesnakesoup.org/editorial-articles/curious-case-tomokazu-fukushima/

>Tomokazu Fukushima, "Metal Gear Solid 2: The Making"
>“While there were some parts that were edited by the both of us, but if I’ll be bold to say it, all the real-time cutscenes were written primarily by Mr. Kojima, as well as all the mandatory CODEC calls. I was assigned to writing all the optional CODEC. We ended up creating around 2,500 files.”

>Tomokazu Fukushima, Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (Konami Guide Interview)
>“That’s because we carry the Metal Gear branding, so you can’t make something that isn’t like Metal Gear. The structure of the game is also a realistic style modeled after all the previous Metal Gear games. […] Usually you don’t really need to write a backstory for a boss character, but this was a Metal Gear game. In order to truly make it Metal Gear, it is necessary to write some backstories to an extent. Therefore the details are necessary to make Metal Gear like Metal Gear, they’re not just there for the sake of it.”

>Hideo Kojima, "The World of Metal Gear Solid"
>“After the plot was decided, I had help with writing the voiceover script. Some of the harsher terms that were used, such as ‘patricide’ and ‘bravery and cowardice’ were contributed by [Fukushima].”

>The stuff retards call "prophetic" would be the hour long codec calls towards the end of the game, right...?
Yeah, which was written by Kojima. There's definitely a decline in optional codecs after MGS3 considering how barren they feel in MGS4 and are literally non-existent in MGSPW and MGSV, which were replaced by codecs.

No game. And downgrades.
There isn't much to do. It's not freeroam. It's small it's stupid. The highlight is some of middle east and decoy octopus. And the guns which look good in the viewer.

They spent long enough playing tom Clancy stuff to steal the essentials but didn't get the idea of there being a game which uses them.
Used too high a resolution too. And without some imperceptible/_motion blur tweaks. So the downgrade was severe, stripped to utter shit. It probably shouldn't have been released. for some it needs to be good so they can't accept that it's bad. But it is. They made some terrible decisions. It didn't push the PS3. And it had slowdown to 20fps every time there was smoke or you pulled the trigger. No exaggeration. Facing a wall would incur the same 10fps drop. The volumetric effects cost a lot.

They shouldn't release this. They should make an entirely different game to show they don't need Kojima. The PS3 version of 4 should be a forgotten thing and the new version the standard.
Erradicate the anime/stupidity/lighthearted element. Make a very low res game, with lots of interpolation and depth of field amd blur and motion blur. Get some incredible graphics action and gamelay out. Play semi invisible staying alive by being on the winning side, or something moral instead. Figure out a way to unfuck some war such as disrupt and control coms, put commanders into play. Unite forces for some purpose. Probably one would be to outclass drones.

Is there a fanbase more infuriatingly midwitted than MGS fans?
Niggers spent decades trying to decipher lore and worldbuilding of an allegory that spells out its message three times near the ending and every main character's story arc revolves around said theme.
MGSV fans are genuinely schizophrenic.

The game completely falls apart by Chapter 3 in a shockingly bad way that almost screams of rushed development.

He cut the arm off that was possessing him in MGS2 and replaced it with a robot arm because Liquid's ghost was inconvenient as fuck, but he wanted people to think Liquid took full control, hence he hypnotized himself to act more like Liquid but remain in control the whole time. His arm not being shown (especially when he rolled up his sleeve every time in MGS2 when liquid was in control) and then at the end when he throws off his coat for the fist fight, combined with him not having Liquid's voice, is supposed to tip you off Ocelot was in control. Idk why people miss it, him missing the voice was supposed to make you ask "what's up with Ocelot?" and the reveal he no longer had the arm was the Aha!

It's the ending to a franchise that had already ended. So instead of having any value to bring by itself, it had to re-open closed story threads, answering questions that either weren't asked, or were never meant to be answered.

It's also barely a game. The sneaking sections are sparse and simple. Act 1's sections are boring and simple, with the last one in the base being the only interesting one. Act 2 is a bit more fun, but still extremely limited. Then after that it's mostly action set pieces with the odd token room.

Shit game, shit story, simple as.

To me, it just didn't go in the direction I was hoping for after 7 years of waiting for a conclusion to 2. It skips over a lot of things that I think should have been factored in and some of the design choices aren't what I wanted
>Snake is now an old man in what feels like a character assassination by Kojima
>They handwaved the Patriot AI twist, the Raiden character, the rescue of Sunny, most things regarding Liquid Ocelot
>The BnB core being rehashes of the Cobras and Foxhound felt lazy
>The Codec system itself feels like a downgrade from 2s variety
>The level design falls off a cliff after chapter 2
>It feels more like a sequel to 3 than 2
It just didn't hit right.

Grew up gooning over MGS series but now as a sober adult I see how cringe and underwhelming all the games are. MGS1 is definitely the best of the solid series. MGS2 was the final game where they pretended to care about gameplay. Rest is a downward spiral. MGS4 is unplayable now with endless cutscenes and weird Kojima controls during the short gameplay sections.

As for the story and characters? I'd rather go read a book. I don't play games for the story. John Carmack quote etc

>Noooo i cant have good music, i’d rather just listen to music on its own

>>
>>745950354
MGS4 has some of the best third person shooter controls around and TONS of small moves that didn't really need to be there but were still added because the devs really care that much. The streamlined version is MGSV which removes a lot of these small moves and goes for something simpler.

On the other hand you could start discussing whether or not it's a good change to actually have third person shooter controls in the context of a sneaking game where you want to be relatively weak compared to your opponents. I hear that, but you know the real issue? It's how incredibly powerful and ubiquitous the MK2 is. And that issue has started with MGS2 and has only gotten worse. MK2 governs everything you do, whether you have third person shooter mechanics or not.
>>
>>745950354

I'm not denying that, I'm in despair over subhumans getting filtered by MGS2 and 3 controls, not having free movement during aim and requiring 3 inputs for precise shooting was balanced for a stealth game.
See how braindead MGS3DS becomes when you crouch walk everywhere popping tranq headshots every screen.

It's that mode where one team has stealth camo but only non lethal weapons like MK2 (+ knife) while the other team has rifles and shit. If you hit the invisible team the entire team gets revealed for 4 seconds.

Webm related, even Raiden can't kill in that mode, his blade is switched to non lethal. He's quite overpowered though since he can walk without a knife, meaning he's 100% invisible unlike the others.
>>
>>745950621
only because he was firing the gun
>>
>>745950663
I'd argue crouch walking for MGS3 is a good addition because otherwise MGS3 forces you to crawl far too much and you don't get this nice sweet spot where you can move around from mid distance without being obviously seen.

3rd person shooter mechanics for MGS3 are obviously stupid, though. The game isn't intended for that.

I don't want to move by rolling around. It's basically the equivalent to this weird dolphin dive strategy MGSV has where you'd just dive over and over to move because it gives you a better camo index than just walking. This is kind of an exploit and it's not very interesting gameplay wise or visually speaking. Just give me a middle spot between "I can run at full speed but I'm easily spotted" and "I'm basically invisible but I'm slow" because the game pushes you to use the latter far too much in casual gameplay.

It is though. It's very engaging. You're played these games to get immersed and engaged. They're not all "high literature" if you will but that's besides the point, they don't HAVE to be fucking Shakespeare all the time to be great stories especially within the context of what they are. "Great" doesn't have to specifically be "high literature".

That's not my idea of funny sneaking. I don't want to know "okay I can run into this section from 00:03 to 00:08, then I have to lay down and I can run again from 00:14 to 0:21 and leave the area".

I believe you CAN have organic interesting gameplay like in that one MGS4 trailer https://youtu.be/H7GQslg679Q?t=186
Not EXACTLY like that but close enough. And I had some of it with MGS4 when I wasn't just abusing tranq gun.

>>
>>745951292
the controls were fine on ps2 then they completely fucked them up on the ps3 remaster because the pressure-sensitive buttons were a lot more sensitive than the OG so aiming an assault rifle without accidentally firing was borderline impossible
the same happened in 3 where it's way too easy to slit a guard's throat by accident, meanwhile i didn't even know that was a feature until my 3rd or 4th playthrough back in the day because you actually had to press the button pretty hard for it to happen

>entertaining
It is.
>cohesive, and consistent
It's not, but it doesn't HAVE to be except in your definition. Game development over the course of a decade is a mess. It goes in a lot of directions. It's not perfectly consistent and retcons can happen. Although you could say this didn't happen until MGS4 so in that sense you could still call MGS1-3 "cohesive and consistent", proving you wrong with your own definition.

But I argue your definition is incomplete from the start. It's not about "remaining consistent" or some other low level Cinema Sins levels of criticism. It has to be thought provoking, it has to be interesting, to evoke things, to immerse the player, to be part of a greater whole... It's a work of art and it has so many things contributing to the final results. And when it comes to MGS I argue it's definitely doing good, even when it comes a bit flawed here and there.

For example, MGS1's genetic talks was complete bullshit. But it was part of a greater whole, it had symbolic meaning, it related to other themes, and most importantly it was only one piece of this entire big puzzle. So it wasn't a dealbreaker.

Wouldn't tranq snipers be less egregious since they'd at least alert the enemy when you hit them with it? But overall I agree anything silenced breaks the game, and that was already back then in MGS3.

Still though, MGSV is too streamlined. There's no camo index, just.. kind of lie down and enjoy the low visibility. Almost no interior sneaking. Just too many things that turn it into a cool operator game but not a very interesting MGS game compared to 3-4.

>>745951883
That's MGS2 and it's vastly different. You have actual vision cones, meaning evading such vision cones with such tight precision is actually INTENDED. It's the experience. It doesn't apply to MGS3+ games. Also running makes no noise in that game, furthering my point.

Terrifying efficiency.
What I don't like is MGS4 telling you "hey by the way everything happened with these 6 guys you knew". Feels so much less esoteric. It's not all bad, I can see why they'd idolize The Boss but you're losing so much good things from MGS2, it's not worth it.

Lets recapitulate.

MGS1 - GOOD! Fukushima san worked on it
MG GB - GOOD! Fukushima san worked on it
MGS2 - GOOD! Fukushima san worked on it
MGS3 - GOOD! Fukushima san worked on it
MGS4 - BAD! recton clops and bad aside form gameplay. the things kojima works on (the story characters, codecs, direction) are all bad
MGSPW - kuso kojima tries to copy monster hunter and kinda fails
MGR - GOOD! It's not a kuso kojima game its a Etsu Tamari and Kenji Saito
MGSV GZ - GOOD! wow he actually did it
MGSV TPP - BAD! it's the sloppiest mess because kuso kojima wanted to make the GTA of tactical espionage operator

BONUS!!

P.T. - BAD! kuso Kojima was never gonna finish it he same way he was working on MGR and dropped it to Platinum, the same way he wasnt going to finish MGSV until Konami put the foot down and told him to get to work.
Death Stranding - BAD! more open world. Its literally MGSV all over again but with deadly rain

MGS4 is actually pretty great when you actually get to play it.

...And it isn't one of the setpiece shooting/chase sections. The thing is that since the sneaking gameplay feels good it ends up feeling like it is over too soon too, especially compared to the Cutscenes and aforementioned setpieces. Anyway that's my shitty opinion.
>>
>>745953834
I stood up and spoke "kino" when I saw this fight for the first time. Unfortunately, the fights have a weird dissonance that is probably intentional, where Drebin rolls in to monologue about their traumatic pasts, after you just saw them rolling around seductively in these tight latex suits. Part of the self-aware, subversive tone of MGS4 I guess. Maybe they wanted to comment on the sexualisation of women in games, by saying, well you just fought this battle and she's hot, but did you realise she actually grew up in a warzone etc. so how do you feel about that, huh?

People underrate PO pretty fucking hard (Especially with how much PW and consequently V took roots from it) because they took the PW line to heart as "Just Cause" to hate it by default. It did some really fun shit like the AC!D crossover characters.

Hot Take:Dragging to Truck>Fulton because you had to make some fucking effort for recruitment and it was an incentive to NOT always do it BECAUSE it was annoying, adding gameplay friction. Fulton is just instant gratification dispensing.
>>
>>745954331
That's not a hot take, Fulton also arguably ruined MGSV.

PW is also underrated. It has one of the best MGS stories around, it just suffers from a lack of immersion with the missions system and comic book style cutscenes.

I used to be on the kojima hackfraud train but only he has the balls to actually commit to a definitive ending for a character.
After seeing what Nier has become (gatcha slop) I massively respect MGS4 for not letting solid suffer a fate like that
After playing NMH3 I appreciate that mgs4 was able to tie up loose ends in a satisfactory way, so what if it took some long cutscenes to do it.
Stupid bitch hackfrauds like suda have to make shitty vague sequels and end on ambiguous endings and cliffhangers because they're too wrapped up in their own bullshit to present anything more than empty symbolism.
Yoko onoTaro, suda67, etc could never, their ego is unironically too big to wrap things up.
Also when kojima copies a movie or whatever he does it proudly.

I think it's a pretty solid exploration of the themes of deterrence/AI and also why The Boss died for the US (that isn't just "she was a patriot! and wanted to save da world i guess"). It has some really good moments like Snake convincing the secretary the nukes were fake and the Peace Walker drowning itself in song, as a parallel of what The Boss did.

It also has a great bittersweet ending with Snake rejecting The Boss and becoming Big Boss himself.

>Chapters 1 and 2 ... cute ways to affect the battlefield.
There aren't any REAL ways to affect the battlefield in MGS4 lol. Try actually messing around and participating in the battles, go to any of the battlefield sections such as after the Johnny shitbarrel cutscene in Act 1 and try killing a bunch of soldiers on either side. No matter how many you kill, neither side will advance, and instead you will just see the exact amount of combatants you killed climb back into the level from a chest high wall nearby. Each battlefield zone remains completely static

The factions mechanic is beyond half-baked, it's like it never made it out of prototype phase. You can only ever help the rebels by doing certain actions at a few specific moments like blowing up the APC before the underground tunnel in Act 1, and all that will do is simply cause all the enemy guards in the tunnel area to be replaced with friendly rebels, which IS NOT A GOOD THING in a game already lacking in proper stealth sections. Your reward for enaging with this system is you get to enjoy EVEN LESS STEALTH gameplay

Same deal halfway through Act 2, where you can blow up the power station and your reward is that the optional path on the left will be devoid of enemies to sneak past. This is such a horrendous mechanic, I wonder how it even made it into the final game. But I can say that about so many things in MGS4

You also have the issue of guard behavior during these war zones. Where guards have extremely erratic movements rather than proper patrols, guards will not react to sounds like they would otherwise by investigating or calling caution, guards being unable to call for reinforcements, guards remaining knocked out or sleeping forever and being unable to wake up no matter what you do to them. This last one I really can't understand. Genuinely no fucking idea why they did this

>These were at the time straight upgrades to the series' stealth gameplay
Holy fuck LMAO, they absolutely aren't. The removal of the limb damage system from MGS2/3 makes the shooting feel like garbage, and no longer lets you incapacitate guards without killing them. The Solid Eye is OP as fuck (especially with its thermal mode) and marks a return to staring at dots on the corner of the screen when MGS3 proved that no radar worked fine by disabling it on any difficulty above normal. You can also no longer shoot guard radios to prevent enemies from calling an alert or calling for reinforcements

They MASSIVELY increased ammo limits for all weapons, like being able to carry a whopping 300 FUCKING TRANQ ROUNDS on Normal (or 100 on Hard which is still insane) which makes ZERO fucking sense considering aiming is easier than ever, something that also incentivizes shooting your way through every level. Alongside that, Drebin's shop lets you buy infinite amounts of ammo at any moment, from a pause menu, for basically pennies. Which also makes most lethal ammo pickups around each level completely pointless. The whole Drebin shop system is such a baffling, shitty, horribly designed addition, it's literally built-in cheats. MGS4's mechanics are TERRIBLE

God damn man, the average gamer really has no critical eye for anything. People are so easily wowed by these war zone setpieces and muh octocamo. No one here ever tried experimenting with the mechanics, or the enemy AI. You all just coasted through this game on normal with your infinite tranq ammo headshots. Even the people who criticize MGS4 have no fucking idea what actually makes it bad

You can actually affect the battlefield on about 2/3 of the areas. There are a few with infinite respawns but you can help the rebels win most of time. From what I recall, you have 4 areas where you can in act 1 and 1 where you can't (the one before the big building where you meet Meryl). Similar in act 2.

It's sometimes janky because the guards and rebels have a "script" sometimes and if you interfer with it they'll either pause and resume or just go back to their default behavior. The issue is that it's too easy to interfer I'd say, a single collision is enough.

The guards are a lot more erratic in battlefields but it makes sense, they don't wake up but that's a pretty okay concession to make here.

>>745955919
Limb damage is a missing feature but it would have been a bit too powerful, considering you're already way too strong. The guards are SOP boosted so they have less stun, it kind of makes sense. You can still stun with bullets, but it's not localized. Small missing feature. Solid Eye is strong but not crazy, the dots are often misleading (especiallu with the frogs). Shooting guard radios is both too powerful and meaningless in an SOP world.

Completely agree on the ammo and Drebin though.

I'm not saying you're entirely wrong but asides from some systems breaking there's absolutely room for interesting organic gameplay like >>745951636
It's just that it's not "robust". It can break.

>Act 2 is the only part that's an actual MGS sneaking game
Act 2 is 99% scripted war zones during which guards are blind and retarded and their behavior is extremely scripted. Not fucking ''actual MGS sneaking'' at all

Seriously, let me go through all of Act 2
>the beginning area seems like a decent stealth zone except if you get if you get spotted or you tranq the guards that are holding the rebels hostage, the rebels will get up and it turns into a shootout
>the short walk up the hill is another scripted shootout
>another war zone with two sides shooting at eachother
>then ANOTHER war zone with two sides shooting at eachother
>and THEN ANOTHER scripted war zone with two sides shooting at eachother
>the mansion before the B&B boss, which has a decent layout and would have made for a good stealth area, is wasted on ANOTHER scripted war zone with two sides shooting at eachother
>the mountain trail at the end is the closest thing to traditional stealth in all of Act 2, but the density of guards is very sparse for such a big area, and a lot of guards are just stationary

Seriously. Try playing MGS4 again, and then think about how much of your time is spent just sorta walking around blind and deaf guards that are too distracted shooting eachother, vs actual solo sneaking where it's just you alone learning the guards' patrol routes (there's basically none of the latter)

Genuinely the only worthwhile stealth zone in MGS4 is the section in Act 1 right before you meet up with the Mk2 and get your tranq gun. One of the only parts of the game where you just have a decently sized area, with guards patrolling from A to B that you can learn the movements of, with no gimmickshit
>>
>>745956530
I guess it's nice that you can actually use your lethal weapons for almost an entire act, so it's got that going for it
>>
>>745956562
Most of these shootouts you also have to deal with lines of sight. Like, you brought up Act 2-1, well even if the rebels and guards fight you have a LOT of involved and committed sneaking to do and a simple mistake gets you spotted.

I'll agree about the mansion however, you DO get a few intimate sneaking moments and they're okay (like guards coming in the mansion) but it'd have been a lot more interesting with a traditional level, one like the last level in act 1.
>>
>>745956530
It's okay but I hate that you can't really tell whether these robots are only seeing through their lasers or have a "general" vision cone on top of that, it seems like it's the latter, but then it means you can't really exploit either, you need to avoid the lasers but you can't get up and do things while they have the lasers out you need to stay prone. Kinda ruined it

>The guards are SOP boosted so they have less stun, it kind of makes sense.
Weak excuse

>Limb damage is a missing feature but it would have been a bit too powerful,
You are already powerful as fuck in MGS4, you can carry more healing items than ever (a total of 30 heals on Normal, 15 on Hard, 9 on TBE) alongside having health regen, and the modern shooting controls make going for headshots easier than ever, alongside the Drebin mechanic like I mentioned basically giving you infinite ammo. You can effortlessly run an gun through the levels in MGS4, and the lack of limb damage doesn't change that

Its removal was likely due to lack of time, the devs struggling with the new tech, or lack of passion and attention to detail... maybe all three. But either way it's inexcuseable, it makes the shooting feel like garbage when you dump a mag of M4 rounds into an enemy's thigh and they don't even react, when MGS2 and 3 made even the basic pistol feel incredibly satisfying, despite neither being as focused on gunfights. I can't believe people praise 4's shooting and don't notice this massive downgrade

Oh and btw.... what if I told you it's not completely removed? That there are traces of it in the game? Yeah, go load up MGS4, try holding up a guard, and shoot them in the leg or arm with your 1911, they will actually have localized damage... for a moment, they might also limp around but after a few seconds or when they get suspicious or they spot you, it stops and they keep walking around as normal like it never happened lol. It's like there are the unfinished remains of the system, but they only trigger temporarily during a holdup. Try messing around with it. It's all so weird, and even weirder things happen if you try doing this during a battlefield section

MGS4 is such a technical mess in every aspect, I really don't know how people can praise this game's mechanics or technology, and I can't believe no one other than me is pointing this stuff out
>>
>>745949753
Kojima didn't want to make 3, but Konami threw enough money at him to do so. He made a game that was an "apology" to fans for doing what he really wanted with MGS2, and it's arguable a lot of the "fanservice" is more of a mockery of the western fans of the franchise.
MGS4 was just never supposed to happen, but jap fans pushed kojima for a "conclusion" to the story of MGS2. Konami came out with money and a boatload of sponsors, and Kojima is now tasked with creating yet another MGS game he didn't want to make. Now he's got to satisfy the dumb western fans that hated 2, and the dumb jap fans that didn't get the point of 2. The end result is a plot dump with a bunch of fanservice to MGS1 and 3, and a game somehow sandwiched in the middle.

No, the PMC soldiers don't really have any significant armor around their legs or arms, and if they did it still wouldn't be a good excuse to remove such a good system

>Boss fights a straight downgrade from 2 with maybe the exception of The End
Nah the bosses are the best in the series and it's not even close, they are dynamic, have different cool ways to beat them and actually incorporate stealth elements

>4 straight on rail sections followed by an escort mission
MGS3 has easily the best pacing in the series, having the least interruptions and the biggest amount of pure stealth gameplay, so I don't know how you can complain about the bike chase. The Eva escort section is such a non issue too, it lasts like 3 screens and she walks by herself, it's actually pretty fun to do

MGS1 is all action setpieces and bosses for the last 50% of the game, MGS2 is all action setpieces and bosses for the last 30% of the game including the horrible sniping section, MGS4 is 80% scripted war zones, forced shootouts, turret sections, walking through empty nostalgia levels, etc.

It's irrelevant in the sense that it's not a factor in 99% of the gameplay. It's a funny little factor but if you can nail a radio shot you're nailing the headshot as well. It's a "torture your helpless enemy" thing more than anything else. Shooting limbs is actually something that will happen naturally during firefghts AND has an impact on how shooting feels so it's more relevant.

There are lots of FROGs, about 40% of your opponents. At least these have more superarmor than your average PMC. Some weapons, like the 1911, still stun either of them but they don't leave limb damage as you said. I think high stopping weapons like 1911 should do that while the basic rifles like M4 shouldn't, which would make the M4 less overpowered. Giving it a suppressor outside of online was a bit too crazy. This and the M14 which has similar suppressor and crazy range/lethality.

I'll reiterate but it's not that you're entirely wrong for me, it's just that I feel you extrapolate some true things to paint over the entire game and erase what it does well when it's not broken. I linked to a vídeo of it above and for me that's MGS4 at its best with the diversity it offers. MGS3 offers a more cohesive overall better experience but doesn't hit the same technical peaks, and MGSV has more content but is far from being as rewarding gameplay wise despite being less broken.
>>
>>745940671
This to be honest, that's the reason why 4 got way too much shit in it in the first place. MGS1 is fine but you can get better results from DuckStation if you're autistic about graphics.

MGS2 and 3 are about as good of ports as you can hope for. I think they even ported/remade the SOS third-person camera mod for MGS2 in the MC version.
>>
>>745963424
Obviously the lack of limb damage is a bigger deal for me too but

>It's irrelevant in the sense that it's not a factor in 99% of the gameplay
You can shoot radios beforehand, it's an extra option you have if you're playing without the tranq gun, it's fun to mess around with. Also it's not just the lack of physical radios, but how guards in MGS4 seem to alert instantly. Unless they are absolutely alone and far away from the other guards, it doesn't seem to matter if you headshot them instantly, it's like all the other guards get alerted through walls

Even in MGS5, while you don't have physical radios on the guards you can shoot out, when they call an alert you have a few seconds to react, and you can actually cancel the alert by shooting them in the chest causing them to get stunned, something that feels far more fair and is sorely missing in MGS4

>There are lots of FROGs, about 40% of your opponents.
Not even close to 40%, PMC's are the main enemy in Act 1, 2 and 3. The only times you get to stealth around frogs are the few sparse ones at the end of Act 2 on the mountain path, and in Act 5 which is obviously extremely short

I legit believe you could make a cut of MGS4 where you remove like half of the cutscene runtime and it would be a vastly superior game. Most of the major story beats in the game are fine, the themes of aging and the world leaving you behind are good, it's just filled with so much stupid shit or stuff that doesn't matter. You could have the story just end with Snake blowing his head off instead of Big Boss returning and explaining stuff for an hour and the story still works fine. You could argue that all Kojima stories are bloated but its especially bad with this one

>You can shoot radios beforehand, it's an extra option you have if you're playing without the tranq gun
It's just not an option you'd see in regular gameplay because it puts them into caution normally unlike stunning guards which is perfectly safe and MUCH easier. It's a fun little thing but not an actual factor in gameplay.

>Unless they are absolutely alone and far away from the other guards, it doesn't seem to matter if you headshot them instantly, it's like all the other guards get alerted through walls
That's SOP and that's not me coping, you can actually hear a sound jingle for that. It's also balancing, I'm fine with it, that means you still have a very small window of time to get them before the alert begins. It's actually pretty close to MGS3 where I remember it's the same, you have like 1 second for a CQC takedown and if you succeeded the alert will go to 0 (although still count). I don't think you should have more time than that, the game is already too easy.

>Not even close to 40%
You face FROGs in the Act 1 firefight, Act 2 before Octopus and after in the big trailling section, then a lot of them in 5. They make for a big part of your actual firefights since we're talking about that more than the sneaking stuff.

MVRS, though patched HD version of ZOE2 was also good (and better than what bluepoint did to MGS), just not as many bells and whistles.

It only includes the second game because first one kinda sucks and hard to go back to after 2's combat and lack of backtracking. Would be cool if they made it into another OVA though, a recap of sorts.

It doesn't, because you still can't account for what happened in the drop in quality after MGS3, which also "mysteriously" coincides with the co-writer no longer being there. You're just being a grasping contrarian faggot.
>>
>>745969876
>because you still can't account for what happened in the drop in quality after MGS3, which also "mysteriously" coincides with the co-writer no longer being there.
The only noticeable drop in quality that would happen from Fukushima's absence is a lack of optional codecs which MGS4 and MGSV are notable for, and even then codecs are more or less replaced with tapes in PW and V. You're simply just refusing to engage with obvious evidence that you haven't clearly bothered reading. Never delude yourself into thinking you're capable of making a sound argument, because you're just gonna get yourself into embarrassing situations like this.
>>
>>745970101
Then account for the writing quality after MGS3? You can't, other than this mythical scenario of Kojima turning hack for inexplicable reasons. You know what's more plausible? An "auteur" like Kojima who has proven time and again to have an ego deliberately massaging a narrative to claim sole ownership of his works, despite the common knowledge that there were other people involved. If it wasn't Fukushima, it would have been other people.
>>
>>745970697
>You can't, other than this mythical scenario of Kojima turning hack for inexplicable reasons.
4 had a development of 3 years with a director change and tons of script revisions. A writing dropoff is plausible, and even then, it's not as incomprehensibly terrible as you faggots make it out to be. You're also ignoring the fact it's following up three games with fuck tons of vague details like the Patriots, the schizobabble with Liquid's arm, etc, while trying to conclude the entire series. Of course there's going to be a lot of confusing and out there developments.

>An "auteur" like Kojima who has proven time and again to have an ego deliberately massaging a narrative to claim sole ownership of his works, despite the common knowledge that there were other people involved.
This isn't really the case with Kojima like people pretend. He's the main director and responsible for a ton of the writing, but it's very obvious that other people are credited. Look at all of MGSV's opening missions, they credit every other scenario developer and writer.

Cool ideas for gameplay but barely any gameplay to actually use them. Like you get Act 1, then Act 2 which is like Act 1 short as fuck before it becomes a railshooter, then Act 3 has the cool pseudo social stealth bits but then another goddamn rail shooter and then it's just Kojima jacking himself off for hours.
Basically the start of Kojima as failed filmmaker with zero impulse control vs Kojima as a gamemaker with people telling him he needs to actually make a fucking game.

You'll lose depth of field effect if you upscale resolution in MGS2 and the game was also made with Emotion Engine of PS2 and its slowdowns in mind, so speed of many visual effects will be broken. Software mode doesn't fix this.

And It's a similar story with MGS3, especially considering that it's locked to 30 fps on PS2, so you'll have to use hack, which breaks the speed of visual effects too. Fury bossfight is practically barely playable because PCSX2 isn't capable to keep the steady framerate while showing fire particle effects. Also jungles and water too can cause the slowdowns. Basically the lack of the real Emotion Engine slowdowns caused this notorious overblown light behind The End which you can see on PCSX2 even in software mode and in HD Collection (that was fixed in MC).

So you stop being sub 60 iq Sahara monkey who doesn't know how to threw few files to the game directory.

>>745989153

is it *really* that important that a depth of field effect is not missed out? i played mgs2 about a year ago bumped up to 720p resolution and the game looked fine to me. i don't really think people are missing out because a few minor effects are missing.

They're not really minor, DoF if somehow can be noticeable in 720p. I say it's everywhere in the game cutscenes and It's quite noticeable. As you can expect from an old game it hides the low poly assets and different crap. There are some crossfades or slowmo effects which can flicker e.g. Vamp and Fortune "queen" scene on the bridge. Explosions are too fast too, the heat smoke effect on helicopters is like 2x stronger because again PCSX2 can't properly emulate slowdowns and this scene was made with ~30hz in mind. Let's say the game heavily inspired by movies is much more pleasant to look at with visual effects working right or fixed. So two most accurate, faithful, whatever ways to play it are on the original PS2 hardware or MC with fan fixes. Everything else is a bit too much of a compromise unless you don't have a choice. But game will still be fun anyway.

But also, the 25GB Blu-ray disc wasn’t enough for MGS4. MGS4 was a huge game, and the single layer 25GB disc simply couldn’t fit everything. It wasn’t just a matter of game optimization, Kojima actually had to chop parts of the game down to make it fit on the disc. The joke in MGS4 about Blu-ray being such a futuristic medium that there would never be a need to swap discs will never not be funny, especially because Kojima literally had to cut down MGS4 to make it fit on a single-layer Blu-ray disc.

Because the gameplay to cutscene ratio is hilariously lopsided, in MGS4 the actual stealth action game practically ends after Chapter 2, the game has like 2 hours of actual gameplay. Not much. The one thing really missing are VR Missions, Boss Rush and a equivalent to Snake Tales. Those were the shit on MGS2 and it sucks they disappeared after that game

Its a non issue since you could skip every cutscene

Asscreed patented "follow the guy™" in Europe, followed by a mobile turret section.
10 minutes gameplay on the big ship.
So there's only the chapter in the middle east, the one in south america or whatever was that place and the one in shadow mose that are classic gameplay first parts.
Final boss was the kinoest shit kojimbo ever made, only topped by naked snake vs the boss.

>shit downgraded stealth mechanics
Lol wut, MGS4's stealth was a straight upgrade from MGS3 from the addition of the octocamo to crouch walking and more weapons/tools to use
>shitty empty levels
There are more guards in any given area in 4 than the previous games
>>
>>745933323
Here is how I would fix it
>act 1 is mostly the same but advent palace has guards to sneak around this time, the camp area where you meet liquid is also much longer and has a boss fight against meryl who is being controlled by screaming mantis
>act 2 is once again mostly the same but the house with the secret passage is bigger and sequence with the gekkos in the marketplace is longer, turret scene is removed
>act 3 still begins with the tailing sequences but its modified so it is way less strict and more dynamic
>instead of meeting big mama and going straight to the motorcycle sequence, a conflict between the underground and the local PMC erupts so once again another battlefield stealth section is added for the last time
>finally the big mama meeting happens and the motorcycle chase + raging raven serve as the climax
>act 4 is mostly the same except you explore more of shadow moses and most importantly, it has actual human guards
That is about it for gameplay honestly

They were always like this, just less noticeable in ps2 resolution. PS2 had lot flickering/z-fighting issues. From the top of my head I remember them in THPS3 and Silent Hill 2,3,4.

Finally we can stop pretending MGS4 is good and everyone will rightfully shit on it as was the case for the past 18 years.
The only good part (MGO2) isn't even implemented and Peace Walker is boring without COOP.

The worst thing for me in that scene wasn't actually BB showing up, as fucking retarded as it was. It was Snake being in front of The Boss' grave, as if she had any significance for him that he respected. He didn't even know who the fuck she was until Eva went on one of the game's many exposition and lore dumps. And knowing what he knows he would have no reason to think a single positive thing about a stupid cunt whose philosophy was so incoherent it gave rise to both BB, Zero, and the Patriot system. It was, like so much, a "I clapped when I saw it!" bait moment.
