Should I buy a crt TV or a monitor? I'll be connecting it to my PC (via some hdmi to composite or vga adapter) to emulate ps2 (and older) games
>>
>>745938160
because led screens were thinner and bigger
>>
The high pitched squeal pisses me the fuck off.
No thank you.
>>
>>745938160
Is that a 100" TV? That's why.
>>
>>745938160
They’re heavy, bulky and have inferior picture quality.
>>
>>745938160
couldn't make them that big, also took alot of juice.
The bigger question is why didn't we make surface-conduction electron emitter display(SED) TVs to replace them and fix all of those problems.
>>
>>745939301
LCDs were cheaper, and the market doesn't care about picture quality, just size. Same reason plasma died, if that mature tech died despite being objectively superior compared with LCD, SED didn't have a hope in hell.

The funniest part is that size is seemingly meaningless to most PC users, who have become convinced that 24" is the perfect size, and 27 or 32" is some extreme outlier if you want "huge coverage", thanks to aggressive marketing by monitor companies. Meanwhile anyone with a brain is running a 40" monitor, which is the minimum acceptable size for modern 4k resolutions.
>>
>>745938507

TV only if you're willing to go down the crt emudriver rabbit hole. Don't bother with any hdmi to X adapters they're all dogshit and you'll never get a proper picture to a crt tv without emudriver unless you're on linux but I don't know much about that. Monitor is pretty decent for gen 6 console emulation but meh for anything earlier and shader options are limited. Cheap VGA to hdmi adapters work fine with very little lag though. Monitor also good for retro pc gaming due to making low res locked shit look very good. Honestly, if I were you I would not bother with pc emulation. Get a crt tv and get a mister. (or a pi or wii if you're cheap and want the budget way but subpar emulation) For gen 6 you can mod a PS2 pretty easily and load all the roms you want from hdd or sata ssd. For GC just mod a wii and load an sd card up with GC roms. Don't know about xbox. But honestly fuck pc emulation, been there done it all it's shit.

>>745938160
because a 52 inch LCD or OLED TV is plausible. A 52 inch CRT is impossible because the cathode ray tube would be fucking massive. So the only CRTs that size are rear projector televisions which look considerablely worse than CRTs and at that point just get an LCD or OLED TV.
>>
technology progressed and bigger tvs were more attractive, which was doable with LCDs
Also CRTs are worse for the environment and everything
>>
>>745940406
>crt emudriver rabbit hole
qrd?
My issue is that I'm really pressed for space so adding more shit on my desk would be a problem, I'd love to get a few consoles but I simply don't have enough space for that. I'll probably go with a monitor until I move into a bigger apartment. Thanks
>>
>>745939439
Anything past 32 inch becomes ultrawide though. Which sucks. Return to 4:3
>>
>>745940713
No, the slop you're looking at becomes ultrawide because you're retarded. 16:9 is fine.
>>
>>745940713
4:3 was a compromise for television only. Films were much on much wider stocks and adapt better to 16:9. Watching movies in 4:3 was the fucking dark ages.
>>
>>745940627

Custom drivers for oled amd graphics cards that let you output a progressive analog signal to a transcoder which then outputs composite/svideo/rgb etc to a tv. Even once you perfect it after much tweaking and dealing with PoS retroarch it's still just inferior to mister, both in convenience, performance and accuracy and outputs perfect signal of choice to crt. I sound like a shill but it's only because I've been that impressed with it so I spread my enthusiasm
>>
>>745940943
yea? that's what I'm saying. 16:9 is fine. Anything bigger than 32" becomes ultrawide, which is not 16:9
>>
They’re really fucking heavy. A 20 inch i had was stupid heavy and ridiculous to carry because of how much the back jutted out. It had a handle cut out in the top like anyone would one hand that shit from the middle it made no sense.
>>
>>745941103
Nah mister seems pretty cool but since it doesn't do ps2 games I'm not that interested. I'll just get a monitor and a VGA adapter. Maybe one day I'll get all of that shit
>>
>>745941224
No, you're retarded. The reason monitors above 32" become UW is because monitor companies are actively incentivized to sell worthless displays due to the magic known as "shipping costs". My 43" monitor is 16:9, the 85" monitor I'll replace it with will also be 16:9, maybe when I hit 120" I'll consider 21:9 with a large curve.
>>
>>745941293
Literally just buy a PS2 and softmod it. You can run everything off a HDD, which can be replaced with an SD card.
>>
>>745941317
Well my fucking bad for not scouring the internet for a niche 900 dollar 50" monitor which happens to be 16:9 made by one company only you have to sign up for to get it delivered to you
autist
>>
>>745941370
No idea why I thought that they were 100+ bucks, I'll get one lol
>>
>>745941389
My "niche" monitor was 300 bucks, 4 years ago. Now, to be fair, you do have to buy commercial signage these days to get a real screen, but that's more because TVs are now completely worthless BGR slop with built in ads.
>>
Because we got technology that's lighter, cheaper to manufacture/store/ship, takes less space and is a decent tradeoff in image quality.
>>
>>745938160
LEDs were much cheaper to manufacture
>>
>>745941293

Well definitely like I said, crt monitor looks pretty decent for that gen. Looks better on crt tv though if you can get one that at least has s-video which is why me and probably that other guy are recommending just using modded console. Fine on composite too but since that gen is mostly 480 interlaced, it gets slightly blurrier than composite at 240 shit and dot crawl is a bit worse at times.

>>745941446

Yea PS2s are recent enough and were so plentiful that they're still real good on price. Wii even more so for the same reasonse, if you wanted to mod that with GC shit. AI guides are generally pretty accurate and it's all pretty inexpensive and not very hard
>>
>>745938160
radiation is bad for you
>>
>>745938332
gamesir controllers are cromulent though
>>
>>745941057
TVs were 4:3 because most normal film stock is square. unless your film was done on wide 70mm film, it was probably filmed on square-shaped film stock and cropped to widescreen for framing reasons (or not if you're lucky to get a open matte print)
>>
>>745938160
they're bad
>>
>>745942306
hope you don't live within radio, television or mobile network reception range
>>
>>745938160
>Local production lines dismantled
>More difficult to store and ship
>Major companies paid people to make bad font choices
>CRTs need all the art design to happen on CRTs so that everything looks right, so removing CRTs from the production pipeline makes CRTs worse for the end user
>Can't display shit tier widescreen slop
The better question is why I can't find a decent high resolution OLED 4:3 display.
>>745940943
Widescreen displays are shit for videogames.
>>745941057
16:9 was chosen by cinemas exclusively to fuck over home television. It's a meme aspect ratio that offers nothing.
A film shot for 4:3 is still decent, the issue arises when resizing or cropping for different aspect ratios.
>>
>>745938160
Because most of them were heavy pieces of shit
>>
>>745942970
>Widescreen displays are shit for videogames.
There's this magical thing called "just playing in a different aspect ratio". I play plenty of 4:3 games on what is effectively a 35" monitor.
>>
>>745938160
They weren't good to read with and they gave headaches.
Also they were heavy and the screen sizes were small.
>>
>>745943006
>Paying for cropped pixels you aren't using
>Can't butt two displays up against one another because of the massive black bar deadzones on the side
>Sometimes there are hoops to jump through to get a game to support a good aspect ratio in the first place
>Still need to cope with widescreen design polluting everything
Sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from corporate bullshit.
>>
>>745943306
I don't know how you're this upset. I run side by side 27" 8:9 displays most of the day, have 35" 4:3 as an option, and can go full 43" 16:9 as well. I don't need to run 2 displays when one is big enough for everything, and aspect ratios can be case-by-case.
>>
>>745938160
that buzzing sound they make is actually a frequency specifically tuned to make you gay

>>745941057
films were 4:3 originally, they went wider when tv entered the picture to get people into the theaters. the great american film directors hated widescreen. they knew there was a reason the greatest painters of all time chose a square canvas
>>
>>745938160
Because they were shit. The flicker used to give me headaches. Also it's nice to be able to easily carry them around and they take up less space.

Try to play a modern game on a CRT and you'll know why.
>>
>>745938160
Are you poor?
>>
>>745938160
>Why did we stop using CRT monitors
There's no good reason for this, gamers in particular never should have given these up.

>TVs
Arguably they had to since the size limit for widescreen maxes out at around 28", and further than that they become incredibly difficult to move for the end user. If you ever get to see a widescreen HD CRT TV do 1080i it's pretty special but it's pretty rare but it's totally fine for modern gaming, but essentially has the lag of a mid 2000s LCD panel. 480i sets aren't really useful for modern gaming basically ever but with good downscalers modern pixel art games look great on them.

>>745948664
>Try to play a modern game on a CRT and you'll know why.
I do every day and it's fine. Even on monitors you'd be surprised how many modern games still support 4:3.
>>
>>745938160
I think that pic looks so cool because the old tv lowers your expectations.
>>
>>745938160
The motion clarity on a crt is cool, but it's not multi thousand dollars cool. More like 30 dollars for a week of intrigue cool.
Resolution scaling isn't as much of a problem anymore with apps like lossless scaling.
>>
>>745938160
I wish I had a big enough widescreen CRT to play 7th gen games comfortably.

I had a surface book 2 and all it's other failings aside its 3:2 screen was clutch. So much room for activities.

Lawrence of Arabia enters the chat.
>>
CRT tech put a practical hard cap on TV sizes, and they were cheaper to manufacture. And while first flatscreens were ass regarding their picture quality, modern flatscreens are far better than CRT with anything else than retro games.

So, you got a huge list of reasons to move on from CRTs, while CRTs have nothing but retro gaming on their side. It was not even a contest, really.
>>
>>745938160
I use plasma TVs. Incredibly sharp picture despite being only 1080p and the colors are really good. Shame that I have to choose between a 1080p TV that's over 10 years old or a smart tv (gay) that's thousands if I want good colors.
