Being on your phone is considered socially acceptable. They're designed to be played in small sessions and you can even set them up to play themselves. This satisfies the number go up crowd.They're free, they're with you wherever you go, and each one has pretty different systems so it depends on the kind of game you're playing. Some of them have PVP which sounds retarded with pay2win being a thing but it can still be >fun. It's like asking why do people like eating McDonalds. Well one it used to be cheap and convenient, not so much anymore. A lot of the times gacha games play like free visual novels. If you think about it that way, you can enjoy years and years of VN content without paying a dime with lots of cute girls, sometimes well written, most of the time entertaining. Finally they satisfy the monkey part of our brain that enjoys gambling and RNG. Most games play off of this instinct but gacha takes it to a different level obviously. Not saying it's healthy, but you asked what the appeal is.

They're live service games that get constant content, but to me the appeal of gacha is the fan community, because most of them, especially the popular ones, are basically mini-touhous in terms of making stuff that gets shared across the community.
