F3 is so explicitly set just after the war that it baffles the mind how Bethesda thought they could get away with saying it is actually 200 years after. And they still do get away with it. The game is so incredibly obviously set 20 years after the bomb, I can't see how someone would earnestly disagree. The symbolism, narrative and world building SCREAMS it. Just look at the generational interplay that appears everywhere, where there are lots of "old" characters around 50 years and older that clearly and evidently think, talk and behave as if they're representational for the pre-war culture. I mean Liam Neeson is super charged with that pre-war doctor energy, quoting the bible and shit. Republic of Dave being a thing because Dave lived before the war and knew vaguely what a republic was and used it as an excuse for having a harem. The whole Andale business with them talking about being elected coziest town in the east coast. Tenpenny Tower with Tenpenny and Lucien LaChance representing old world burgeoise. The old dude in Megaton being hyper-patriotic. The Enclave playing the part of the insular deep state organ that continues being machiavellian even after the worlds end, still operating similarily to how it did before, no fucking chance they'd do that for 200. Tons and tons of narrative devices only work if the game is set 20 years after the bombs. The main characters birth coincides with the dropping of the bombs, your family obviously gains access to vault 101 because they're doctors, bypassing all the skeletons lying outside. Hence the still very pre-war culture permeating the vault. Fucking bonkers how anyone would think it is set 200 years after. My deep rationale for that is that the bombs not only destroyed the world but ruined the chronological flow of time, the world is spiritually devastated to the point where 20 years or 200 years might have passed, it doesn't matter.
