At the time of Alice's death, Paxton was totally in the influence of Alma so yeah she probably knew through Paxton. But the game doesn't really detail the history of Alma a lot. Alice spent a lot of time in the area where Alma was sealed up in, and Alma has been spooking the area the whole time so she likely knew who Alice was before the events of the game too. The story is pretty much just about her trying to not get sealed up again while also taking revenge, and that means Alice has to go because Alice is one of the people who knows how to get into the various chambers that Alma is sealed up in.
