>>
>>745955156
Right now VR needs more open source standards for things like SLAM tracking, controllers, etc..
If Valve ends up contributing heavily to Monado, then I can see this pushing VR out of the toxic, Shartphone-centric bubble of 2010s VR, otherwise it will just be another headset. Valve's own Linux efforts have effectively been replaced by Monado, since they still haven't upgraded Linux SteamVR from a one-person hobby project and most of Valve's own software tends to be kind of shit when compared to what they've managed to do with existing projects.
It's good that the Frame runs Linux and doesn't use Poodroid, but standalone is unsustainable cancer as seen by the indefinite delays associated with needing to cram a pointless, fixed spec ARM brick into the headset.
>>745955857

Parents of young children also do not want to strap a sensory deprivation box to their faces. If your child falls or gets hurt, you’d have no way of knowing. Maybe the next gen of headsets can have transparent audio like AirPods to put them at ease.

>>
>>745958285
VR mods are going to have to carry it. The problem is that some of the best titles for VR support are all janky 90s and early 00s stuff.
>>745958442
The current VR industry had the misfortune of officially entering the market after private equity secured their hold on videogames in 2008 and subsequently also lost their faith in videogames after 2011. So no gaems.
It came out after the battle for smartphone supremacy, so everyone wanted to be the next appstore and smartphones also paved the way for people to think that all-in-one phoneshit is good which has been strangling VR.
By the time it became more than an enthusiast product it was basically caked in anti-marketing and garbage design because it put its first foot into a market that was already buried 6 feet deep in an oak casket.

Pico swan is going to be around 2.5k and way more focused on MR, like the samsung one. For pure VR I have a feeling it's going to be ass, the design does not look like it even has average FOV for current headset.
>>

>>
>>745955156
as nice as this hardware is, what's the point if no-one makes any VR content? VR porn is terrible, it's either tatted up westerners wearing too much makeup or heavily censored japanese people. There's a very small fraction of the volume and variety that you get with normal porn. VR games basically don't exist. VR movies that aren't porn really actually straight up don't exist.

No matter how good the hardware is, what are you supposed to do if no-one makes anything for it?
>>
>>745962012
That's the price to pay for pancakes, you lose 90% of your light, and the remaining is halved if it's OLED
But at least the optics are clear throughout the fov, and way thinner.

I don't have a 5090 so 2160x2160 per eye with some supersampling will already use a good chunk of my ressources, at least with foveated streaming I can actually have a clear image where I look
>>
>>745961946
There's no comparison between the best LCD and current uOLED headsets.
>>
>>745955156

It's a shame because this was the leap that AAA gaming needed to stay fresh and exciting but the whole thing was fumbled.

There's a whole new chip coming out that is ultra low power and is capable of driving 6DoF slam with hand tracking that will be used in a wide array of tethered solutions where the compute will either be on a brick you carry or your streaming device, dropping HUGE amounts of weight from the displays themselves. It's so good that AR replacing cellphones will enhappen. Best part is the cost is ultra cheap too, most of these devices coming out will be around 700 usd with 90 degree fov minimum and micro-oled displays with much higher resolutions than anything currently out on the market right now. Which is fantastic if you don't give a shit about standalone and just want something you can have on your face all day, replacing your traditional glasses. The only thing stopping me from using virtual monitors already with my quest 3 is rough 720p quality resolution from reprojection and the bulky nature of the device.
>>
>>745962320
There's a lot of flat game support now with mods, it's not going to be the same as full VR but it's not bad playing real games in 3D with some hand controls.

I've had VR for eight years and I genuinely believe VR gaming is dead.

>All the best games are still games that came out 7'ish years ago
>Only a small handful of AAA titles for VR, even less if you're not in the Zuccsphere (pretty much just Alyx)
>All new games coming out follow the same formula of tech demos and sub-two hour games designed for replayability to justify the game only being two hours
>VR Porn Games, which you think would be the saving grace for VR, are also dead. It's just VAM and more tech demos.

All that said I still think VR is worth it if you haven't tried it. Just don't spend $1000+ on a headset and find something cheaper to use, even if it's a refurbished Index or a used Quest.

Maybe on the hardware side, but why have we not had a single big hit VR title since Alyx?
I don't wanna be a doomer because I like VR but it doesn't matter how good the hardware gets if the software and games continue to be stagnant.

that processor in the frame is significantly more powerful btw, look at the detailed specs for each on qualcomm's site: TL;DR it's around 100% faster multicore perf. and 40% faster graphical performance. Plus, it has double the ram with much higher bandwidth (30% greater bandwidth)

From what I have read it is about 20-30% more powerful. Not sure if it would make any difference in the typical VR games anyone plays. Everything else is either a sidegrade or downgrade like no rgb passthrough. And of course it's going to be like 8x more expensive.
>>
>>745955575

>>
>>745980687
>From what I have read it is about 20-30% more powerful.
Well you read wrong. Its processor and RAM is a massive improvement, plus it has wifi 7 support with included wireless adapter, paired with foveated streaming it'll be miles better for PCVR. I personally could not give half a shit about passthrough, I played with it for a couple hours on a quest 3 and that's it, it doesn't matter for games compared to eye-tracking.
I just worry how expensive it'll be as valve's pricing is hot dogshit, but objectively it is a better-specc'd product.
>>
>>745980789
They can but there's really no reason to. /v/ keeps saying GabeN wants more people on Linux and Steam and the hardware is just a means to an end, but clearly they don't want to take a loss either. If you actually put together a parts list of steam machine parts, it comes out cheaper than the machine itself. Even if you order more SFF parts, it's still only a bit more expensive so Valve clearly isn't interested in selling anything below at cost.
>>
>>745980908
>Well you read wrong
Every single source I read is saying that. I think I'll trust tech reviewers over some Anonymous on 4channel.

And regarding pass through, it's important to me and a lot of other people since VR porn is a big reason to get it. It may not be important for you, and that's okay, but we'll skip. Similar to how the steam machine's SFF is pointless for most people, but for some it makes a nice display piece.

If the small form factor is what makes the steam machine more expensive, then aren't they selling it below cost?
>>
>>745981203
No, because Valve has supply chain contracts which gets them parts for cheaper when they buy in bulk. It's always going to be cheaper than consumer retail where you pay more for off the shelf items since you're only ordering 1-2 units vs that corpo that buys 1000.
>>
>>745981305

they definitely do not, they fumbled that bag pretty hard anon. That's why it's so expensive.

>>745981359

You are misunderstanding what Valve said due to lack of real world knowledge. Valve never said they didn't get any contract, just that they only secured short term contracts. Do you actually think Valve is hiring jeets driving to every microcenter and buying RAM/SSD off the shelves?
>>
>>745981634
A month-to-month small order is not a contract.
>In an interview with Gamers Nexus, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffas explained that "there's no contract" with suppliers. They state a price, and either Valve accepts it, or gets cut off.
>"Look, there's no contract; there's nothing," Griffais said. "Like, those guys... they give us a price every month, or something, and they say, 'You can buy that many, and it's yes or no.' And if we say no, then they never talk to us again."
They should have prepared a proper contract ahead of time, genuinely stupid on their part.
>>
>>745981774
You do not know what "contract" means. The fact of the matter is buying in bulk is still cheaper than buying off the shelf.
>>
>>745982304
>Pierre-Loup Griffas explained that "there's no contract" with suppliers
>>
>>745982304
Buying from whatever supplier is available is NOT a contract retard, these are just spot-market orders. Plus, he fucking explained it clearly in that interview that there is no contract. The fact they weren't even sure what they were getting (wrongly stating that some units would have 2*8GB sticks and having to correct the misinfo later) shows how last-minute the order actually were as they DID NOT GET A CONTRACT WITH ANY RAM SUPPLIER.

a lot of people I know hate the beyond so much they returned it and are still waiting for the frame
it's not oled, has a slightly lower resolution per eye, but it's 144Hz (and it can actually reach it at native res... fuck you bsb), has big lenses so you don't need to be extremely close to have a good fov, reportedly has quite a bit less glare
it's wireless, which is really down to personal taste since some people really don't want a wire or lighthouses, while others will never accept anything but displayport. The foveated encoding lets it use the bitrate for what you're actually looking at so it should close the gap quite significantly
it's way more comfortable than the beyond since it's light, balanced and the strap and gasket are actually well designed
and eye tracking doesn't need you to sign an agreement saying you let them use all your eye tracking data for training

Also you're extremely naive if you think bulk orders of RAM during a crisis would be any cheaper at all.
Here's the thing: Consumer RAM sticks are actually CHEAPER than what companies are paying (if they didn't secure their supply via contract), why? Because of excess retail stock, that many consumers are rightfully turning their nose at since the prices are horrific. This is also why the prices of retail sticks are at a historic high with projections that it'll get worse once the current available retail stock dries up.
TL;DR - legacy retail stock is cheaper than brand new stock for businesses right now.
>>
>>745989509
To add to >>745990484
The wholesale price (that's the price to purchase from a direct supplier, such as Micron, Samsung, or SK Hynix) is much higher than the retail price increase you're seeing. Google the cost of NAND flash wafer and DRAM chip cost increases if you don't believe me, and then compare that with the retail price increases. The wholesale cost increase is MUCH higher.
>>
>>745990708
*technically Valve would've purchased from a spot-market broker rather than direct supply, but you get the point. I'm trying to keep my explanations simple.
Valve are effectively left with the dregs that the AI giants didn't purchase, and they're paying out the ass for it. They should've got a contract ahead of time, then maybe the Steam Machine prices wouldn't be quite as assraped.
>>
>>745991016

Even games that people typically use VR for (eg. flight sims) are a better experience with a multi-monitor setup (which will give you 4K+ and/or 480hz+ refresh rates, any FOV you want, very comfy unlike VR, etc.) VR is a failed technology imo.
>>
>>745955156
The price and tiny market share will make it irrelevant

AI is saving VR, because nobodies that can't program but have a claude subscription and time to put on and take off a headset 1000 times can simple ask AI to make a VR mod. It's exploding right now. If you just search for "VR mod" of any noteworthy 3d game you will likely find something at some point of progress.

To be honest though this is Valve we're talking about, not some small-time company. If Valve had treated the Steam Machine as a true console competitor aiming for millions of units from day one, they absolutely could have secured those tier-1 contracts, but instead they decided to treat the Machine as a niche product with very low volume even though they were surely aware it would have high-demand based on how successful the Deck was (compared to their projections); Valve is unusually small-scale with their hardware even though their platform has a collosal outreach. They should've taken the risk and had the balls to go big this time.

>dumps billions into metaverse
>get fuck all out of it besides cheap headsets

He set a precedent that VR is a money sink that you do not want to invest into.

When one of the most prominent tech guys loses tens of billions of dollars doing something, that something is going to be avoided like the plague by anyone on the financial side of business.

Yeah, he was the one who hyped it up after he bought out Palmer Luckey, but after that hype there was nothing. A handful of games and billions of dollars gone. He tried way too hard to make VR into this thing that families and office workers were supposed to get into for reasons only he knows.

VR should have stayed enthusiast only and grown on its own merits. When an incredible game came out for it (that made billions instead of losing them) the opposite would have happened. Investors would be scrambling to throw money at VR instead of considering it dead.
>>
>>745992364
This. If Valve really wanted they could have gotten better contracts/prices for components or even taken the hit and subsidize it like they did the steam deck.
>>

>>
>>745992575
They should have gone all-out.
It would've been hugely expensive and risky for them, but they have the capital to have given it a try.
Valve is too risk-averse to ever truly shake-up the PC gaming market. Microsoft is just going to win over Linux/SteamOS in the end if Valve continues to sit on their ass like this instead of taking the financial risk to go directly against them.

Why would they take a risk though. They have no saying what hardware component will the speculation bubble bloat the price of next. They are literally doing nothing and earning tons of money now. Again - why would they take any risks? People tend to forget that Valve has made many, many mistaked in the past (Steam controller, Artifact, all those PC peripherals nobody cares about), but somehow people only remember the Deck. Meta Connect is a month out. Good chance of hearing about their next gen headsets. That are better than the Frame.
>>
>>745993084
I'm not a fan. I've used a Deck, but I don't own one.
Valve should have taken that risk as a strategic move, it would secure the long-term future of their business to an open platform (as opposed to having their money printer potentially restricted by Microsoft). Look at it this way: Microsoft's gaming division WANTS to compete against Steam in the long-term, and there's no way Valve is blind to this: SteamOS and Proton existing is proof of that. If Valve secured a fixed price contract on components with high volume production of the Steam Machine, they could have caused a much bigger stir towards Linux (and away from Windows)

Right now, Valve's main revenue is highly dependent on Windows continuing to not take a slice of the pie against Steam, but it's only a matter of time until Microsoft tries to compete against Steam directly. They've been planning to for a long time and Valve knows this.

VRchat feels more like the direction VR needs to go, really playing into the full escapism VR offers instead of just focusing on motion controls

I bought a brand new PC and meta quest 3 headset two weeks ago. After setting up Steamlink, my first game was borderlands 2 VR, which, most people said was dog shit. I actually found it quite good and movement and world felt very smooth and was , it was a good first experience. I tried
doom 3 VR
Fear VR
left 4 dead 2 VR
fallout 4 VR
I've enjoyed every game immensely except for Fear VR which had choppy movement and some bugs with two handing guns (its still WIP). I've had some thoughts about why VR isnt bigger: it's held back by limited games, high barrier cost for a headset ($599 for meta quest 3) and a powerful GPU for PC VR.
Some of these problems are being addressed naturally with time as people have better GPUs and AI VR mods are porting classics. A game getting a VR mod is basically the best indicator that it was an absolute kino, which also coincides what this anon was saying >>745992358
But the devastating truth nuke is that most normies get motion sick after like 10 minutes, and most headsets are uncomfortable and they cant play for more than an hour. At best, it's a novelty experience, when it needs to be a new revolutionary and better way to play. I think this is why gaben chose their premier VR title to be half-life alyx, as a new entry to the series would have needed a way to be revolutionary/radically different than halflife 2 and VR offered that + it was a chance to "on-board" new VR users.

>Have you played any games without motion control aiming?
I also tried out Deus ex MD with vorpx, and it just wasn't a great experience. It had head tracking but the interpolation movement on the screen felt crude at best. Coupled with a static weapon out taking up 25% of the screen space, it just wasn't a good experience. Maybe I'll try it again another time, but there are other games to play.
>except for Fear VR
To be fair, I didn't have the two hand glitch all the time, and I seemed to be able to save, re-load and it would reset the axis of rotation for two handing when it happened. It just felt choppy by being limited to the four cardinal directions of your joypad no matter where you're facing, and your body being somewhat static if you move/lean away from your starting position. I did enjoy the docks section thoroughly and I'm ready to move through ATC offices.
I think the key to having a good experience (25 hours so far) is movement where "up" on the joystick/joycon moves you forward wherever you're facing, and that is the reference "north" for all other joystick directions.

everyone buys the quest 3 because it's the standard vr headset both for standalone and pcvr, everything else costs multiple times more and/or doesn't run standalone games so it requires a whole high end computer to run steam games

VR is only good in concept
It serves only as a tool to increase immersion at the cost of adding more complex control, but there's 3 problems with this:
1: immersion isn't a requirement for a video game to be good
2: immersion can already be achieved with current hardware
3: most gamers prefer to have as few boundaries/interfaces between them and the game as possible, for example it's more efficient to have a single button to achieve an action than a gesture or motion, especially in competitive games where reaction time matters

VR only excites people who think realism is the end goal of video games and porn, and these are the kind of people who goon to AI porn all day
>>
>>746020287
A good VR game isn't trying to be realisitc but is trying to feel convincing. It's why people still jerk off Alyx and Beat Saber while Boneworks is aging like milk.
>>
>>745955156
It's been what, 10 years? Can you touch a titty in vr or is haptic feedback still not a thing?
>>
>>746020386
That's a good example, Half Life Alyx is not a better game gameplay-wise than its non-VR predecessors
As for beat saber, the entertainment factor is the wii-mote swinging rhythm game and the ability to put your on songs, it doesn't actually need or benefit from a headset.
>>
>>746020537
I mean technically Sound Voltex doesn't need an arcade machine or custom controller, but lo and behold. You're thinking about subjective human immersion as a very utilitarian thing. Go on far enough and humans don't need entertainment, why play games?

Alyx is objectively a worse game than HL2. I enjoyed it more than HL2.

It adds 6DoF cursors and camera control, which is a massive improvement over relying on just two analog sticks for everything.
The average current game is gimped due to the fact that current mainstream controllers are still mostly stuck in the early to mid 90s, so games are overly simplified and mostly play themselves.
VR improves on the precision and versatility of mouse and keyboard instead of continuing to sacrifice gameplay just so that the game can be played on a console controller that only really has 4 buttons available at a time.

>>
>>746020634
No, I didn't say that.
I accept that sometimes clunky arcade hardware is part of the shared arcade experience, it's charming and fun. But they are made that way to make the button inputs more simple and game-specific, which is the opposite to VR. Immersion is a completely different subject. I think it is valuable, but like I said, it's already achievable without VR. You can play Witcher 3 or Half Life 2 or Halo 3 and be immersed in the world, characters and story. Immersion and suspension of disbelief are already achieved, the headset is not needed. The fact you enjoyed Alyx more despite realising it's a worse game is because you enjoyed the toy you got to play with. But after you get bored of that toy, you don't keep it on when you go back to using the computer normally. You naturally prefer to have one less interface between you and your computer actions.

>>746021081
Yes, more complex control options sounds cool, but you're being disingenuous if you're going to pretend that games only have 4 buttons without VR. On PC we have entire keyboards and we don't need all the buttons. Nobody has more trouble aiming a cursor than they would aiming a gyro remote. The additional control options introduced by VR are a gimmick, equivalent to those mock-truck set ups and tank set ups. It's a fun toy, but after the gimmick loses its novelty, people often say "okay, I actually want to play games now" and they take off the headset and play games freely without the obstruction

>As for beat saber, the entertainment factor is the wii-mote swinging rhythm game and the ability to put your on songs, it doesn't actually need or benefit from a headset.
Anyone who says that exposes how little experience they have with these games. Dance games benefit from a headset hugely because without the headset you have to keep looking at the tv in front of you and you can't dance properly when you're locked onto a tv screen. You have to stand far away from it to have the space to dance too
Not to mention the fact that hitting notes that are flying directly towards you is much more intuitive than everything that flat dance games tried to do.
And on top of that Wii controllers barely actually fucking work, which is a detail that zoomers who never played Wii just can't seem to understand

>>746022586
The form factor pretty much guaranteed it won't. They also want a high PPD for productivity and media consumption rather than gaming purposes so the only way you get this in a 2.5K headset is by making the FOV much smaller. Rumour is it's 90, smaller than Quest 2 even
>>
>>746022837
The Quest 3 thickness is because of the main board, cooling, battery. With a compute puck you only need a small daughter board to plug in the cameras and tracking. Should make the headset way smaller.

>>
>>746022931
Which is besides the point. 2.5K with Q3 FOV would not be enough for productivity liek the APV, Pico Swan and GXR. This isn't intended to be a game headset so they;ll prioritize PPD over everything. Even 90 is only happening due to how close to the eyes the lenses will sit. But unlike strap headsets, you won't be able to change the interact here to increase the FOV. It rests on your nose, so you get what you get

Anyway, if the Swan costs 2.5K as rumoured this might be the best option at least until the Quest 4 releases in late 27 or 28
>>
>>746023528
According to some Russian playtester the default FOV of the Swan/Space Pro is also quite low, like 90 or so. The chinks wanted to be able to say they have a higher PPD than APV Pro's so it wouldn't surprise me if they choked on POV.

Unlike the Phoenix though, you should be able to increase it with a custom face interface
>>
>>746021612
>Immersion is a completely different subject. I think it is valuable, but like I said, it's already achievable without VR
100% agreed. Although I think VR has higher highs and lower lows in this regard.
>But after you get bored of that toy, you don't keep it on when you go back to using the computer normally.
For me it's because most VR studios are retarded. It's either janky physics simulation or "press A to open door". Discourse over what VR is good, and especially what it's bad at, is of very low quality right now.

A large portion of VR Chat players are still in VR, and I think that's for good reason. Sure it's lower friction to play on PC or even mobile, but something is lost.
>>
>>746021612
>Yes, more complex control options sounds cool, but you're being disingenuous if you're going to pretend that games only have 4 buttons without VR. On PC we have entire keyboards and we don't need all the buttons. Nobody has more trouble aiming a cursor than they would aiming a gyro remote.
This may be true for Keyboard and mouse, but it's not true for controllers which are still used by most people. Most controllers don't have gyro, which means that if the player is constantly adjusting the camera they also only have access to the shoulder buttons, which means that they only use four buttons (no stick clicks don't count).
>The additional control options introduced by VR are a gimmick, equivalent to those mock-truck set ups and tank set ups
You have two hands and can independently look around. The amount of intuitive complexity this can add that doesn't require a session of vimtutor is significant.

>what's the point of the upcoming Q4?
Guess we will find out in a month at Meta Connect. There was a rumor years ago Meta wanted a headset without controllers. So maybe Phoenix won't include them. Still it makes little sense not to have them as an option.
>>
>>746027494
>adhoc connection via wifi dongle
People are massively overlooking this. You won't need to have your headset connected to your router anymore, it'll connect directly to your PC instead. That means superior latency and bandwidth management versus quest. I feel like some of you questfags don't actually play PCVR at all since you cannot seem to grasp why it's a big deal.

It's superior even when compared to using the Quest 3's wired USB-C connection, especially since the Frame supports foveated rendering. You won't perceive any video compression even at native resolution@144hz.

Yeah all the hands-on previews said they couldn't see compression artifacts at all, nor could they see any delay with the eye tracking.
Of course I don't have one so I can only take the word of reviews and (((gaming journalists))), but in theory is should blow other wireless options out the fucking water for the reasons I stated earlier.
>>
>>746031149
Quest pro technically can do foveated streaming but it's eye tracking sucks ass and is really slow so it's worst case scenario
>>
>>746030265
if it's sweat it should come off with a damp microfiber cloth. they might have tried to use wipes with chemicals on it and destroyed the lens coating.

>Quest pro technically can do foveated streaming
It is hard to find examples on youtube of this.
>>
>>745955156
Literally all depends on price, that is all there is to it
>>
>>746031397
NTA but that's because it isn't available yet, foveated streaming will be provided by Valve for headsets that support eye-tracking, but it'll work most efficiently on the Frame as its tuned for it.
>>
>>746030529
Keep in mind this was just for the headset, no controllers included. I'm a bit butt hurt since now I'm seeing other used headset offers that include photos where the lenses look pristine. I'll buy prescription inserts anyways so those will have anti-glare coating, but between buying this and the controllers I'll spend a bit downwards of 400... Maybe I'll just resell it when I have it all and invest however much a new set costs. I'm using it on PC with the adapter, the playstation software is a pain in the ass when you don't have the controllers so I suppose I'll buy them sooner rather than later, I also have a PS5 but the only VR game I have there is Resident evil 4 remake, which requires controllers anyways so I'll just use it for PC in the meantime, but SteamVR is expecting me to use the controllers so I still have to figure it out.

This 100x fucking this. The only games that look passable on my quest 3 are simple polygon games like walkabout, ancient dungeon, and compound.
Anything with doom 3 level graphics or higher and the quest 3 completely butchers it. I have quest games optimizer and run walkabout and compound at very high settings stadlndalone on my quest before I get massive fps dips, and even on my pc rendered 4k per eye, it still looks worse than standalone and this is coming from someone whos done every setup imaginable and has had a friend with a q3 come out and troubleshoot for me.

to succeed they needed to have produced something. If they had actually spend $100B and people actually did stuff with the time and resources and labour that that $100B represents they very well might have been at the forefront of a paradigm shift in society

the problem is that they did fuck all and wasted it on nothing. Of course it would have been not silly to not waste the money, the problem is that they did

you fags must be running steam link at 50mbps or some shit there's no way you can have such a drastic bad experience with compression
I mean sure there's issues where you look at a rock textures in the game and the encoder has some issues and it becomes mush in the center but it doesn't happens enough to make you go more than "huh that's weird"

here's a headset pic (double compression from streaming + lossy screenshot) of re4vr not even running at max res because my pc isn't the best and you can still make out all the grains in the wood, the clothing and all that as long as you have enough high res texture details at the source and good enough bitrate (300mbps+) then it'll look close to native in headset

Nah. That's like saying the next Xbox will save Xbox. You can't save hardware with more hardware. The problem is rooted in software right now. No gaems. Not enough porn. The actual hardware problems are like 20 years of innovation away from having an impact on VR's adoption.
>>
>>746049286
The starter Quest 3 is good enough for getting into PCVR I'd say, the Quest 2 also exists but it's inferior.
>>
>>746049286
Wait a little longer if you can.

Quest 3 or Pico 4 are best generalists unless American where Pico is banned. Quest 3S (the S stands for shitter lenses) or something used if you're a poorfag. Quest requires at least $50 extra for an aftermarket headstrap and likely a face gasket too. Both want a dedicated router if used for wireless PCVR.

For exclusive PCVR or simulator fagging, PSVR2 is a good entry option, especially when it goes on sale. Might have a pretty good used market for these if on a budget. Downside is it's wired and not replaceable so tread carefully. Requires an extra adapter to work for PCVR and a bluetooth dongle for the controllers.

why do you bring latency in a compression conversation
besides I got a psvr2 on the way and eagerly to swap the q3 from a steam frame later one as a dedicated wireless pcvr headset
>>
>>746048991
i had to push to 500mbps h264 on hl2vr before it started looking acceptable and even then it was an eyesore the moment i started moving quickly
any higher and latency becomes unacceptably shitty
both av1 and h265 don't go above 200-300 before the headset's decoder kills itself and those look like ass at those bitrates as well
>>746052302
>why do you bring latency in a compression conversation
because higher bitrates increase latency?
>>
>>746052407
>because higher bitrates increase latency?
yes it does and the increase from 350mbps h264 to 500mbps h264 is about 4ms decoding
>>
>>746052302
Latency limits how high you can practically push the bitrate, although it is something of a tangent. Ultimately what I'm trying to say is you can't stress test bitrate in a largely static shot. Even with 1mbps if nothing moves you end up with decent quality.
>>
>>746052563
cont.
If you want a stress test, play Skyrim or HL:A.
No matter what I could not get those games to look halfway decent on Quest without hatcheting the visuals (removing fog and foliage)
