https://www.eurogamer.net/playstation-terms-of-service-reminder-psblackout-protest

>Sony is sending out an email reminding PlayStation users that their digital games are “licensed to you, not sold.”

>"The Software is licensed to you, not sold," it reads. "You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and personal license to play or use the Software for your private, non-commercial use on the system or device it was intended for." (https://x.com/tomwarren/status/2091214337222295916)

>Several recipients said they'd received the email despite not touching their PS4 or PS5 in months. Rather than linking out to the full terms, the email reproduced each referenced document in full, including the section of the Software EULA covering digital purchases.

>"There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that the digitalisation of content overall has been progressing, that's the big factor," Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao said during a Q&A. "It's not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content; digitalisation is progressing."

>how is this argument repeated every time
Because it's short and snappy, like a brand slogan, which ESL third worlders love to parrot to make themselves seem educated on matters too complex for them to understand. Every social and societal issue these days has been atomized to just a catchy little phrase you squawk to show your support or your opposition.
>>
>licensed
>not sold
O boy famitsu is gonna be 100% nintendo now

the argument is that the crime is different. it's not theft but 'merely' copyright infringement which people find to be more morally defensive

Statist nonsense.
You can own the storage the game is stored in. Which is why stealing BD discs is, well, actual theft. You can't own infinitely reproducible digital data, it belongs to whoever wants it - it's not a scarce, real resource.

A car is a physical asset that actually exists. A video game is pixels on a screen.

Also its abundantly clear when renting a car you are renting it.
The situation is more like going to a dealership to 'Buy' a car (the salesman literally says you are PURCHASING IT AT FULL PRICE) and then 5 months later the sales man comes to your house and takes it away because "um sweaty, we don't support this model anymore, read the convoluted fine print stupid goy, you never owned it"

Let me put it in a way your pea brain can understand; when people give you money for a product, they expect to be able to enjoy it. It was a given that it was not a time dependent resource. Unlike a disk that could break or rot or simply stop working, a digital game has no timer. It's supposed to be able to last forever, hence why scarcity doesn't apply to a digital product. At no point was it ever considered a rental. However, corporations are now abusing IP law to basically rugpull everyone who gave them money in good faith, hiding behind "IT WAS ALWAYS A LICENSE, CHUD."

So now people are just throwing their arms up and saying that they don't care anymore. They will pirate to keep the games they bought, and you have nobody to blame but yourself. Corps got too greedy, trying to introduce planned obsolescence and artificial scarcity into a medium that's inherently immune to it. People are wising up to this jewish trickery and sidestepping the system completely. I'm definitely among them, hence why I've decoupled my PSN purchases from my ps3 and now enjoy them indefinitely on my PC. did the same thing with my WiiU/3ds virtual console games.

On pc it's more about bypassing the game's drm (I don't count steam's own drm because it is so easy to bypass and is never updated it's a non factor), and if it doesn't have any it's a non issue.

Friendly reminder to Snoy that anyone living in the EU is legally allowed to resell used software licenses and that they are not legally allowed to stop them. EULAs are also unenforceable.
Of course there is no penalty to outright lying to your customers, as almost all purveyors of digitized content to the masses frequently lie about the rights that users are entitled to and attempt to restrict them as much as possible.
>>745962713
They're shifting the Overton window of how consumers perceive their rights. A lot of the shit they pull is only possible due to consumer apathy, regulatory capture and uninformed boomers in power.
There's a reason that the record for oldest President is usually set right when technology hits that could either be disruptive to those in power or which could be regulated.
Reagan was elected to make sure that software copyright would degenerate into license shit when CONTU created software copyright in 1980.
>>745962998
Retard. The principle of exhaustion applies. They provided me with a copy and their copy right over that copy is exhausted, regardless of whether it's digital or on a disc.
They are disregarding precedent established 14 years ago with this shit.
https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:62011CJ0128
>>745964062
Except they are selling their software as one-time purchases and aren't allowing you to rent it, which means the principle of exhaustion applies. If you sold me your car, then it would be my car to do with what I want, and if I sell the car to someone else, then it's their car.
>>745968067
Just like all """IP""" lobbyists and publishers, they want to misinform the public, because that's where the pressure comes from to repeal these laws. The US ruled against shrinkwrap licenses when they first popped up, but they have backslid immensely since then, using the EU as an excuse to make their copyright worse and worse even when it contradicts the constitutional powers granted to congress.

Seriously, I'm confused, are consolebros mad because they won't have a nice box to put on a shelf or because they won't own the game? Because if it's about the latter then they're missing the point.

A ps6 has to justify its spec increase when not the ps5 has done that. The ps5 is also roughly a 2070 equivalent so a 3060 already mostly the next gen.
And that's making the very lenient assumption that the ps6 isn't $1,500 or a cloud streaming machine.

If I buy a car I obviously don't own the rights to the design of that car, but I do own the car I bought, I can resell it, even slightly modify it. Same goes for pretty much anything else.
When it comes to games the only reason these barriers and obstacles with ownership exist is because the technology allows for artificial killswitches to exist.
Sony is trying to normalize it (the funny part is that for sony customers nothing changes, they've never even had a chance to own the games) and there is no doubt different companies will try to do the same to other products in other areas.

Glad I haven't bought a console ever since the PS360. Do not reply to the retards, they know what they are doing and playing rage-baiter. Everyone knows that we, the consumer don't own the IP, what we would like is ownership of a copy that do as we please and always have access to it since we paid money for it.

The PS5 is not justifiable, the console hasn't been used to it's full capacity not to mention the games being complete ass, the PS6 is probably made to further push an all digital future/ecosystem to further control what you access. Second, the Switch is also not justifiable, it used to be that people said that a less powerful console would be great since it will force devs to optimize their games, but as we are seeing, that is not the case. Even Nintendo's games are but a shadow of what they used to be.

Do not purchase or buy these consoles, do not support these companies.

You would need to be able to do ANYTHING to the files first, or access them in the first place.
You can't, that is also the reason why you have no chance to own the games you buy, even the ones on discs.

>>
>>745962616
Yeah the limited license trick, thats what skins are in valorant for example. You get this license but you can also be revoked from one without notice, for example psn servers shutting down. Sadly the enshitification is real, but the good thing is there is quite a backlog from past 30 years to enjoy with arguably better games.
Also I wonder what is steam's approach? Is it some limited license also?

Technically yes. In practice, no because they know you can and will remove the bandaid yourself if they try anything. Remember, Steam is competing against piracy, it's in their best interests to keep their mouths shut on the matter

Why didn't they just slowly sunset physical media instead of making it into a spectacle? Ignoring the core issue with it, the way they did it seems to be backfiring really badly. Just use the slow boil method instead of trying to crank the heat to the max immediately if you want to do that shit.

Subject to the terms of this Agreement, Nintendo grants you a non-exclusive, revocable license to use the Software solely on the Console for your personal, non-commercial use. For clarity, the Software is licensed, not sold, to you, and you may not make use of the Software except as expressly authorized by this Agreement. Without limitation, you agree that you may not (a) publish, copy, modify, reverse engineer, lease, rent, decompile, disassemble, distribute, offer for sale, or create derivative works of any portion of the Software; (b) bypass, modify, decrypt, defeat, tamper with, or otherwise circumvent any of the functions or protections of the Console or the Software, including through the use of any hardware or software that would cause the Console or the Software to operate with any unauthorized, illegal, or pirated software or hardware; (c) reinstall any prior version of the Software on the Console or otherwise obtain or install any version of the Software other than through distribution methods provided by Nintendo; (d) install or use any Software which Nintendo identifies as an unauthorized copy, or from which one or more unauthorized copies have been made; or (e) exploit the Software in any manner other than to use it with the Console in accordance with its documentation and intended use. Content obtained through the use of an unauthorized device, or through the unauthorized modification of the Console or the Software, may be removed. You agree not to access or use the Console or the Software in an unauthorized or unlawful manner or to access the consoles, devices, accounts, or data of others (including Nintendo) without their (or our) consent. They waited until the SKG thing failed and now that there is nothing left in their way they just put salt on the wound because who else would be there to protect you? The only people who could have done something haven't so now its just time to put pressure on the user. Its not enough to defeat your enemies you need to psychologically torture them, thats how the psychos who run the world deal with stuff. Before they did it in secluded spaces afraid of push back but the new world order has time and time again reassured them that there is nothing to worry.

The difference is that steam is not the only option for PC games and there are other things that can be done on a PC other than gaming. Not to mention the fact that steam doesn't take your games away even when they are no longer sold, and, if you have the files downloaded through steam you can just copy/paste them elsewhere and they will never ever dissappear.

Lower production costs

They know it won't be popular, they're just coinvinced that the backlash will eventually die down and the customers who buy physical(around 23% of their sales I think) will just begrudgingly switch over to digital. They're betting on the desire to play new games to overcome all of their horseshit. The problem is their new games suckass. They're relying on brand loyalty and game quality to sustain them when they've spent this entire console generation torching both.

The PS6, along with whatever the new xbox is called, are going to sell like absolute shit.
