This is why the Point & Click genre died.

13 year old me beat it without one, you're just bullshitting. Yes there were lots of moments where you had to brute force your way, but it would often amount to just a few hours lost and that was it
>>
i beat this as a dumb kid. maybe you're just retarded...?

I'm sorry but that photo finish pic puzzle is impossible unless you actually knew how horse racing works (no one does).

Bro, you don't even KNOW what a difficult P&C adventure game is. If anything GF's annoyance comes from WASD controls which leads to some hotspot bullshit.

Only the first two chapters are good, and even then not all of them.

Dunno why Tim gets a free ride when he hasn't released a good game in 3 decades
>>
1. not impossible at all, git smart
2. not a point and click either
>>
>>745972540
you're just retarded or not paying attention. if you actually play the game you're practically hand-fed the solution. the cat dying, the blimp crashing, and the kitty hats are all connected to dates, all you have to do is talk to people or inspecting the displays at the race track
i'm also pretty sure these are the only dates the game even mentions so as long as you're paying attention you can simply just stumble upon the solution even if you didn't make the connections with the photo
>>
>>745972049
Probably one of the most obtuse games I've ever played in my life. I liked the story, voice acting, and general style of the game but holy fuck some of those puzzles were dog shit.

As a kid and one without access to a massive library, spending too much time with a game wasn't a problem.

I don't think anyone beat monkey island 2 without a guide
>>
>>745973028
Wrong you gotta understand how horse racing works and shit, it wasn't just a date it was like linked to how horse races are counted and how many are done in a year or something and none of this is explained.
>>
>>745973167
i think you're mixing that up with another puzzle. all you needed to do for that puzzle was get the date right on the betting ticket printer
>>
>>745973349
The date wasn't a date per se it was like Week and Race number and track number some bullshit.

I bought Full Throttle that was bundled with the guide.

because modern games are designed to be intuited and if "puzzles" are included they're on the level of a six year old. no one is thought to actually THINK a problem, just respond with manual dexterity or follow obvious solutions.

>This is why the Point & Click genre died.
I think it's much more about how other genres started being able to tell grand narratives with intricate worlds just as well as P&C games.
Once that happened, there was little reason to play a P&C game when you could get as good of a story from an FPS or an RPG.

That's why the genre of point and clicks shifted in the 2000s to casual games aimed moreso at women and people who weren't fans of traditional video games.
Like the Nancy Drew or Sherlock Holmes series.
>>
Guides were required for 90% of games back then

I mentioned this before but Wild Arms 2 literally has a random ass password in the second to last level

That said GF was a great game. I stopped after the like third chapter or some shit but it was well done, cute.
>>
>>745983683
it's a lot more that so many of these studios were chasing profits and trends, if any of them were willing to settle for making smaller projects with smaller returns they would have just kept trucking along, but no major studio was going to do that because talented devs in the programming space with big names like Sierra and LucasArts were also the places to push new tech, and lotsa people also wanted to push new tech and weren't married to the genre of point and click. It was a means to an end for many people. Roberta Williams is an outlier in PnC/graphic adventures basically being exactly what she wanted to realize, but other people were just as interested in trying to do things beyond puzzle games or narrative-first design especially while that whole First Person Shooter thing was making people oodles of money and 3D games as a whole were the hot investment.

>>
>>745983848
I think you were just stupid no offense
People back then knew to interact with literally every single thing no matter if it made sense or not
It's only now people make stupid posts about old games "duhhh how were you meant to KNOW??" that's the fucking thing, you weren't meant to know anything, you were expected to just TRY
>>
>>745984493
he coulda chosen lots of styles if he wanted you can just stop pretending there's some kinda nefarious motive instead of just not liking the art he does
I loved MI3 btw so keep that in mind when I say this, but of course he would, who the fuck would really enjoy watching other people bumble around with something you hold personally dear as a major project? it's not like he held the rights or got to decide and likewise he wasn't the only cook that mattered but he's entitled to dislike other people continuing his work all he wants
>>
>>745972049
early 3D killed the point and click genre. Instead of trying to push for new and ugly tech they should have tried to adjust their writing. I got bored of the sarcastic sassy lines in games.
>>
>>745984548
rose coloured glasses/wishful thinking of how it was
the truth is most nefarious little secrets and difficult things were communally problem solved
you had friends that played these games and you'd swap tips, both adults and kids, most people weren't playing these games alone at all with nothing but their own brain and no outside sources. Also of course anywhere in this chain someone might have called a hint line or had the guide themselves, so you'd be getting hints from someone who had the guide and didn't solve it themselves etc.
They were in fact communal entertainment and not single person brain benders.

not really saying it's particularly bad but you'd think it was the most brilliant shit ever by how hard people jerk it off but both at the time and with the hindsight of 20+ years I don't see the magic anyone else does, it was just okay. It's certainly a more creative premise than plenty of its contemporaries but that's really most of what it has to offer I feel like. A novel setting.
>>
>>745985418
style is substance and GF has a whole lot of style
>>
>>745985397
maybe yeah
from what I've read of his ramblings about monkey island over the years I don't really think he's ever gotten over people liking monkey island without his involvement
that said I don't think most people consider 3 better than the first two games. I might though, it's almost certainly my favourite and my most replayed one.
>>
>>745980876
I only learned shit like office objects, objects you might encounter on the streets and directions/days. I learned what "upgrade" means by playing starcraft 1, school didn't help me much in my english vocab.
Then there is the question if you even played the game in english or translated and how they translate the puzzles. There is a way to run MI1+2 with translated text and english voice if you really want to rage.

He wasnt getting free rides per say he just had more sway at LucasArts because Full Throttle did well and that allowed him to take a risk on Grim.

Even after Lucas he definitely wasnt getting anything handed to him they almost had to cancel psychonauts 1 when microsoft changed CEOs then for years after had to run from publisher to publisher for funding. Then selling out to microsoft just to polish psychonauts 2 only for them to once again pull out, fire 30 employees and now need to shop around for funds again.

I don't think it's controversial I just think there's a lot of people that love the first two games. I can understand it but I think 3 is about as close to timeless as any PnC gets. Anyone can enjoy it with no knowledge of the medium or even really video games.
>>
>>745985853
At this point I think he's fucked because quite honestly Psychonauts 1 is the last game he did anyone broadly gave a real shit about. I'm kinda talking out of my ass because I don't really know the situation that well but I get the impression he's a fine idea guy but dogshit at managing projects after all the kickstarter problems and general trouble with double fine getting shit out.
>>
>>745986365
Basically just watch the Psychonauts 2 documentary and watch how many employees just vanish by the end of that project. Tim is not a good boss and fools around too much and everybody working under him has to suffer for it. Its tragic seeing OG Psychonauts 1 devs leaving because Tim picked a producer who only made company morale worse.

I wish I could erase my memory of this game so I can enjoy playing it all over again, but once you know all the puzzles even if you forget some it's never quite the same experience as the first time around.

I only got stuck on the 2nd year which is the longest one / most open. I got filtered by three things there
1. I didn't think to use the gold liquor on Manny, I had forgotten you could use items on him too
2. I don't remember how to figure out the forklift issue
3. The morgue was hidden from me somehow, I didn't even know that section existed somehow I missed the lead/stairs to it every time, maybe if I had found it i wouldn't need to check a guide.

Literally everything else in the game I did completely on my own but I will always regret not being able to piece together those missing bits in Chapter 2
