Why does /v/ say PS2 is stronger than GameCube?

Playing RE4 PS2. So many graphical effects are reduced in detail. Even more noticeably are the water, shadow, and fog effects, heat distortion/refraction effects in the castle's big lava room are also totally absent on PS2. as well as a reduced draw distance, missing many lighting effects, absence of all specular highlights and water effects needed to be re-designed (ripple with transparency, but a flat surface with no reflections), the barrels that Leon breaks throughout the game are missing a circular rim on the top compared to the GameCube, character model physics were also downgraded or completely removed due to the sacrificial and downgrading of model quality such as Ada's hair, Leon's back hair, Ashley's hair, boobs and Skirt being no longer animated as they were in the original GC game release.

Less enemies to save on memory and worse AI routines in general. Audio is completely muffled.

It's not really fair to compare a game that was made specifically for [Hardware] and then ported to [Other Hardware] since we really don't have any way of knowing how RE4 would have looked had it been developed for PS2 first, then ported to GC.
>>
>>745978812
We don't need to even ask, the PS2 is considered significantly less powerful than both the GCN and Xbox. It was well known even back then. Sony wanted to reach the market first. Anyone who's ever played the 3 systems know for a fact that the PS2 was laughably underpowered. Medal of Honor Frontline was a slide show on PS2.

in graphical neutral terms it's widely agreed that it's the more capable system, if you were intending to design the most extensive gameplay simulation with rudimentary graphics you would pick the ps2 over the gamecube.

generally games are best on the hardware they're made for first. they each had something the other didn't.
sometimes if a developer was skilled enough they could transition between platforms without obvious compromises, but usually not.

You're completely correct. The GameCube is often thought of as the weakest of its gen but it's actually arguably the most powerful, although Xbox beats it in a few places.
There are many multiplatform games which are best on GameCube for this reason and also because GameCube would games last.

Since you couldn't update games the Xbox/PS2 would frequently get the "beta" version of multiplat games while GameCube would have the most up to date with the least bugs and even sometimes more content.
Wreckless the Yakuza Missions and Kelly Slaters Surfing are two games that gave extra content on GameCube simply because the game wasn't really complete when released on the other consoles and they still had stuff they were working on which only got completed in time for the GameCube release.

And considering how much better Dolphin emulation is than the other two consoles you should pretty much always get the GameCube version for emulation

None of the GC RE games managed to even outsell one of the PSX RE games
Hell both REremake AND RE4 got outsold by the first RE Outbreak game, a fucking spinoff
no wonder Capcom decided to port it

RE4 PS2 isn't so compromised to make it not worth playing though I think, and the added content is pretty nice.
>>
>>745978284
Who says that? Gamecube was the last time Nintendo bothered with the graphics arms race. The only problem was Nintendo with their continued hard on for gimping storage, so you have those mini discs with less space than the PS2 DVDs.

I think Xbox was a bit more powerful than the GC.

>PS2 is considered significantly less powerful than both the GCN and Xbox
PS2 games game discs could have up to 5x more content (8.5GB dual-layer DVD) instead of 1.5GB GC mini discs. Even the single layer PS2 discs have 3x more capacity than GC discs. Nintendo first-party games that look and run nicely on GC were meticulously optimized to do so while still turning a profit at the average middle-class family entertainment budget. You could not run a highly detailed open-world game like San Andreas on Gamecube, but you can run a low poly cartoon Zelda game on the high seas (flat plane mesh with ocean shader applied).

NTA you were replying to but VC and 3 could run on Dreamcast. (and as far as I remember they got ported to DC successfully)

San Andreas is far beyond what the DC and GC can do definitely. Even the PS2 version was basically raping the GS worse than a gangbang.

well, these exist for all the console since 6th generation is really before online/patches became standard consoles.
i was curating a list of from that era based on exclusive content and this is what i came up with
Xbox
>Aggressive Inline
Exclusive Zoo level
>Test Drive: Off-Road Wide Open
Exclusive stadium race mode, as well as a secret moon level and moon buggy vehicle
>Tench: Return from Darkness
2 exclusive characters, 2 levels, some qol features
>Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee
Exclusive MechaGodzilla character, more areas, 4 player CPU battle modes, etc
>THPS3
Exclusive Rig level, X-ray Character
>Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2
Exclusive London level and rider Chad Kagy
>Fatal Frame 1 and 2
Extra endings, costumes, difficulty mode, etc
>Genma Onimusha
New enemy placement, Increased difficulty, a slightly rebalanced upgrade system, a new green soul type that allows you to become invincible, new enemies, etc

GameCube
>4x4 EVO 2
4 exclusive tracks, 4 more trucks
>Transworld Surf [Next Wave]
13 exclusive characters, extra level, etc

PS2
>Crash Tag Team Racing
If you link the it with the PSP version, you can unlock an extra vehicle for each character and 2 more battle arenas
>SpongeBob Lights, Camera, Pants!
Exclusive unlockables if you have save files for Nicktoons: Unite, Tak: The Great Juju Challenge, and Barnyard. These extras cannot be found in the GameCube and Xbox versions of the game https://youtu.be/TzQU3UxU-1g
>Def Jam Vendetta (Japanese version ONLY)
Features 2 extra fighters who are Japanese rappers
>Powerdrome
Supposedly has an exclusive character named Nexus (I can't find shit about this game's unlockable differences online)

Xbox/GC
>Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX2
Exclusive Greenville and Venice levels
>Simpsons Road Rage

Capcom targeted Xbox 360 hardware for Dead Rising, DMC4 and RE5
>>
Exclusive minor cutscene with Kang and Kodos after you grind out 1 million $
>BMX XXX
Uncensored (Supposedly the European PS2 version is uncensored like the Gamecube and Xbox)
>Burnout 2
Both have an extra 15 Crash Junctions absent from the PS2 version, but the OG Xbox also has 21 more car skins exclusive to it.

if you know of more let me know

The guy that ported VC to the GC recently says that isn't the case. He says that the GC's processor can run it better than both the PS2 and DC.

>>
>>745982438
Scale is one thing, and detail is another. San Andreas has a massive variety of building shapes, terrain deformation, winding roads, and different art styles and textures for different areas. Spider Man 2's NYC is huge, yes, but can you really tell one area from another? Most of the buildings are not very detailed, have fewer textures, and the city is basically a flat plane at ground level without many hills.

Xenoblade run on Wii just fine and areas are bigger than SA map.

GC would have zero issues with any renderware GTA games, is just disk size. Also SA chugs like a bitch on PS2.

just beat re4 og today, is professional a lot harder than normal? i 100% remake, is it harder than remake?
>>
>>745984864
If you know what you're doing, Professional isn't a huge step up in difficulty. If you're still not used to the OG mechanics, it'll probably be a good challenge for you.
>>
>>745984864
Professional is definitely harder, enemies hit super hard but aside from that I don't know if it's any different. You get less loot also but it's still plenty imo.
>>
>>745984937
i died 13 times on my first run, desu majority of it was in that stupid castle cage with one garrador
>>
>>745984864
RE4 have dynamic difficulty, do well and game inflate HP and throw more enemies, die too much and opposite happens. Professional just lock the difficulty on hard setting.

Is not that hard on NG+ but fresh saves can be hellish if you don't know game mechanics well or enemy placement.

REmake and RE0 ports also have issues.

Resident Evil (2002) HD REMASTER

>some lighting and shadows are absent due to Capcom loosing the source code of the pre rendered backgrounds
>black levels are crushed to an absurd degree in some sections. Not to mention some audio/music issue I remember hearing about

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRIIad9ji3w

>Capcom did not have the source files anymore

>They even released a promo video back during REmakes release with a camera going through the 3D model for the mansion. These models are forever lost...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l80nGSuHQNY

Resident Evil Zero HD REMASTER

>RE0 GameCube has better shadows
>shadows missing from the train car
>broken glass missing from the train car

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1_rTdPjBQ4

>Capcom still had access to the original backgrounds and FMVs, and those were created at a high resolution. They actually had to scale the images down when they developed the game for the GameCube
>Tose still had all the raw source files for the backgrounds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaLfiu1XP7M

>The properties of each file shows that most of the backgrounds (particularly on the train sequence) are stored at an unusual resolution of 1588x1392 - while later spots decode at 1536x1344. Essentially, both values are lower than the 1920x1080 on the horizontal axis - for those playing in 4:3, this means you'll be getting a near 1:1 pixel match on the horizontal scale (with the side portions of the screen boxed out, and the active pixels matching the output resolution)

>Resident Evil Zero HD on PC runs at two different frame-rates then - the user-definable value set in the options, plus the hard-locked 30fps of the base background files. In the end, having the game animate at two separate rates doesn't distract (the backgrounds are mostly static, after all) but it is a curious hold-over from a different era in game design

>Rebecca Chambers was modeled after Ayumi Hamasaki
>>
>>745984851
>order-independent transparency.

Honestly it baffles me that only recently GPUs got this kind of feature.
>>
>>745983526
the GC's CPU is better but its graphics processor is madly weaker than a PS2. the SRAM and higher bandwidth cannot overcome how it has something like 1/3rd the GPU pipelines
