in 3D graphics, how powerful was it?Saturn level? PS1 level? 64 level? Lower? Higher?
>>745986273Somewhere between PS1 and PS2
PS1 but not wobbly in feel but only because the resolution was so small
>>745986273they putted a whole ass ds in there
>>745986378The funny fact is that the polygons are almost the same but Mario's design is more modern so it's an illusion the fact it looks better
>>745986493It's funny cause the DS version of THAW uses the engine from the PS2 games but has PS1 tier graphics.
>>7459862732048 triangles max at 60fps on a single screen, to do dual screen you had to write to VRAM then swap do 30fps max, but it had perspective correction for textures so you could get away with larger triangles
>>745986378>>745986528>>745986493I think the DS is still weaker, the difference is experience. When the PS1-64-Saturn started, almost all developers had very few experience making 3D models. so they all looked a bit crude on some part at first. (it's also something that many indie games trying to replicate the styles fail, they often are too detailed to fully be retro and don't have as much limitations or "lack of skills".)On the DS, they already had a decade of 3D experience to start, so limitations were easier to handle.
I'd say weaker.. but the developers had more skills in 3D so for some games it still looked very good.Closer to the 64 in power than the PS1 and Saturn who were more powerful.
>>745986378right screenshot is an upscaled emulator with higher res texture moddisingenuous
>>745987639the game does have better looking models though. but they have less polygons. just more talented modelers and better textures
It was PS1 tier and no it was not between the PS1 and PS2. It was weaker than the PS1.
DS = 3/4 PS1PSP = PS1.5
>>745988474and then ENTER the crazy guys doing 3D on this
>>745988728gba was a friggn portable ps2
>>745986378oof...
>>745988839this is in reality far weaker than a PS1. the people doing this just were crazy talented genius. like the people who ported doom to the super NES in the 90s.
>>745986273Game Boy/GB Color = Super up NESGBA = Suped up SNESDS = Suped up N643DS = Suped up GameCubeSwitch = Suped up Wii USwitch 2 = Suped up Switch
>>745988839This shit to this day still impresses me.
>>745988839Driver 2 is genuinely one of the best games on GBA.
>>7459889853DS is weaker than gamecube. it's better than the PSP but not by a lot.
>>745986273Higher than N64, lower than Dreamcast. Plenty of games do look great when uprezzed from the original 256x192 resolution.
>>745988839>>745988945well, the GBA is essentially a beefed up SNES (including most capability of the on-cartridge chips)
>>745988985The Switch 2 docked should be a suped up PS4 when the games are optimized. A lot of third parties are not optimizing well, leading to mediocre ports that betray the power of the console.
>>745989575what am I looking at
>>745989639Idolmaster Dearly Stars. Left is original resolution, right is 3x resolution.
>>745989719this doesn't even work, these are not even the same textures, the hell
>>745989639DS games are generally so texture simple i.e. the toonish flat appearance that uprezzing 4x makes them look SUBSTANTIALLY betterbut it only works on games with simple texturing
>>745986273The DS had very unusual 3D hardware that doesn't really have equivalents anywhere else.It had a hard limit on polys and vertices, you simply can't exceed the hardware buffers, and they're rendered without any framebuffer. It also supported both tris and quads as primitives, which has implications for shading. And it also had two whole separate 2D engines, basically the GBA but better, and they're all fighting for VRAM.Best looking game was probably Metroid Prime Hunters but you can see the line buffer underruns and Z sorting errors in demanding scenes.
>>745986378no one seriously thinks the ds version looks better do they?
>>745990075the textures seem oversaturated and muddy
I did not care for the nintendo ds.
This game has crazy detailed models for a DS game, but the only way to appreciate them is to emulate the game at a higher rendering resolutionHonorable mentions: that unreleased Idolmaster game, the Wizard of Oz RPG, and Phantasy Star 0All games that have insane meshes that you can barely see at the default DS resolution
>>745986273Middle ground between n64 and ps1. And it was perfect for it
>>745989778They're the same, unedited meshesThose exact images anon posted came from an ancient thread when the resolution emulation fork originally dropped. You can get the game's ROM and test it for yourself.Other games to test it out on >>745990427And that one survival horror DS game set in an insane asylum
>>745988728>>745988839>that motherfucking mortal kombat deadly alliance on gba
>>745986273IDK, devs got better at 3D by this time. Mario Kart DS is fucking 60 FPS.
The RE1 port was nice, I wish more PS1 games got ports
>>745990634Assuming the CPU can keep up, there's no real reason not to run at 60fps on the DS. Without a framebuffer, your polygon budget doesn't go up with a lower framerate target.
>>745986528>almost the samethe only illusion is you not understanding that geometry is non-linear. Mario on the right has exponentially more polygons.
>>745989126New 3DS is pretty competitive with a Gamecube, weaker GPU obviously but stronger CPU and far more RAM. Something like Xenoblade Chronicles would not be possible on the Gamecube.
>>745990741The CPU clearly can in MKDS's case. I imagine if it gets decompiled, there'll be much lot spaghetti code than what is so common in the N64 era.
>>745991068were the difference between the regular and the new models really that big?
>>745991104Optimising compilers were also way better by that point.
>>745991068>Something like Xenoblade Chronicles would not be possible on the Gamecube.Wii is a Gamecube hardware without any lock; it could.
>>745991104>much lot*much less
>>745991134the 3ds refresh was more than twice as capablehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_3DS#3DS_family_comparison_tableleft to right is newest to oldest
>>745991134Straight up 3x faster CPU clocks. It also had two more CPU cores. One was used for face tracking. The other was never used in legitimate software for some reason.
>>745991178I remember seeing some ad for that game when I was younger, I never got to play it, but it looked beautiful
Now I'm wondering, did the regular DS had different spec from the i version?
>>745991134Pretty big, New 3DS has 3x faster CPU and twice the RAM. There weren't a whole lot of New 3DS exclusive games though>>745991154The Wii was about 1.5x more powerful than a Gamecube and had over 3x as much RAM. Not a huge leap but a game with large open environments like Xenoblade wouldn't have been possible.
>>745991347DSi had 2x faster CPU, 4x the RAM, a DSP for sound processing, and a few other tweaks here and there. A pretty decent upgrade all around.
>>745991396>Not a huge leap but a game with large open environments like Xenoblade wouldn't have been possible. It would; multidics would've been needed. Xenoblade never loaded its whole enviroments in one go, you have loading checks in between even as early in game as Bionis' knee.
>>745991612>multidisc helps with RAM constraintsare you 12 or just retarded?
>>745986273I always saw the DS as the PS1 and the 3DS as the PS2
>>745991442real shame they didn't to much of anything with the extra specs
>>745991864Certain DS games run much more smoothly when you force them to run with the DSi's better CPU. The Trackmania games come to mind.
>>745991684The RAM wasn't as defining as you claim, again; Xenoblade ingame copes with it fine with short loadings. It's the locking the hardware had as gamecube that made a difference
>>745987612>Closer to the 64 in power than the PS1 and Saturn who were more powerfulI've never heard the ps1 and saturn being more powerful than the 64. The saturn certainly isn't.
>>745991442It doesn’t really matter much in practice though, there are "DSI enhanced" versions of games but unless they make use of the cameras they're basically no different from the NTR versions. At best you'll get higher quality audio
>>745989126>3ds is stronger than the pspFuck yeah. Loved that little handheld.
>>745991221I would guess Nintendo was expecting to get a few years of life out of the N3DS instead of the actual situation where the Wii U died and they had to scramble to release the Switch. The regular handheld market was dying to smartphones anyway so it was the right call.
>>745987612The 64 was miles ahead of the competition in 3D power and it's not even close.
>>745990427>the Wizard of Oz RPG
