Can anyone point out an example of a remaster/remake that was better than the original game?
I'm having trouble thinking of just one that didn't introduce numerous bugs or completely ruin the art direction.

Well a remake is a brand new game that can and should be different. I personally like Resident Evil (2002) better than the original, of course it doesnt replace it because its so different, as remakes are.

As far as remasters The Last of Us on PS4 made it out pretty unscathed, same with the 3 Uncharted games. The games are brighter overall a little but id argue God of War 1 and 2 as well.

not necessarily better, but a very welcome and novel experience was the system shock 1 remake. i quite liked their take on it. i like about as much as the original, to be honest.

>>745996498
it's just literally the same game but in a higher resolution. i don't think it really qualifies as a remake or remaster

Odin Sphere and Dead Space come to mind.
Yeah yeah /v/ will pretend to hate the Dead Space remake due to that one single bathroom sign but everyone who played it will tell you it's a straight improvement over the original.

>>745996697
who says that a remaster needs to be any more than that? a remaster could even simply be a compatibility patch
>>
>>745996749
in my headcanon, a remaster sounds more significant than just putting out the exact same game but with higher res textures. it'd be like calling the PC version of any PS2/Xbox game a remaster.

>>
>>745996821
>a remaster sounds more significant
But that's not what a remaster is, it means changing the quality without actually touching the content. When you remaster a song you don't rerecord it, you only touch up the original audio.

>it'd be like calling the PC version of any PS2/Xbox game a remaster.
A port is not a remaster because you aren't changing anything about it, just experiencing it through better hardware. You can think of it like playing an mp3 through cheap headphones at first, and then a proper speaker system. The actual mp3 file is the same, but the sound comes through better.

Dark Souls Remastered QLOC downside,

-some of the albedo textures were altered and had their contrast lowered.
-QLOC struggled with their new material setup, specifically on armor. specular is off, some of the albedo textures were kinda weird
-features less depth of field
-bloom is also lower
-bonfire particle effect is a good looking fire, but loses the special look of the PTDE bonfire
-beyond the foliage textures that did get upgraded, most all textures in the game are the same resolution as PTDE
-DSR didn't fix basically any of the mesh holes, texture issues, etc, that are present in DS1 everywhereeeee.

PTDE had lots of surfaces with only an albedo texture, no normal or specular map. In DSR, *everything* has a spec + normal map.

So one thing Dark Souls Remastered definitely has over PTDE is most foliage textures. It seems QLOC had access to the source versions because they are sometimes 2-4x higher resolution. left is DSR. right is PTDE.

QLOC handled Dark Souls Remastered, commissioned by Bandai Namco. Demon's Souls Remake was done by Bluepoint, commissioned by Sony.

QLOC I believe said they wanted to change Covenants, bonfire placements, and improve item balance and were told to stop by From, who own the IP and make all of the ultimate decisions.

They all have small issues. Dead Rising for example has some censorship, but is honestly worth it for the quality of life upgrades like being able to move while aiming and NPC’s being slightly less retarded. Ironically it’s one of the few that came out in an already HD era so the graphics aren’t as important.

It’s hard to judge which ones are really better. I finally decided to emulate Valkyrie Profile because I’ve heard the remake censors a good chunk, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s better with a different control scheme being it’s so old.

Deadrising remake is ok but it definitely butchered some things. The OG actually had a pretty advanced bloodsplatter system that’s totally absent in the new game. Voice acting is worse pretty much across the board. They totally fucked up the zombie grabs which makes combat 10x more annoying than in the original. You had some “iframes” in the og when attacking that are no nonexistent so you’ll constantly be interrupted fighting hordes The needless censorship of course is also shit. Oh yeah, Lots of tiny details in the mall are screwed up thanks to AI upscaling. At one point they were literally missing entire zombie variants.

OG is a 10/10 unique masterpiece

The remake is an 8/10 by comparison

Yakuza 1&2 HD. There is no reason to ever play the PS2 versions once these get translated.
>Item boxes can now be accessed at every single phone box/save point like in Kenzan onward rather than forcing you to run across the entire map to your one hideout (Or two if you're playing 1) just to store something.
>Hard difficulty is available from the start in 2 without having to beat the game.
>2x as many people walking around the overworld.
>The people that walk around the overworld don't pop in as aggressively as they did in the PS2 version so they're much higher quality much sooner.
>In general every NPC has higher quality textures including Kiryu.
>Signs have been given a resolution bump so the world in general pops better and looks nicer from afar.
>Load times are faster than even PCSX2 as long as you do the HDD install.
>Restaurants now list what you ate in each restaurant.
>PS3 version has trophies for both games and the saves of each game give you items in 5 including the western version of 5.
>Wii U version has the map on the Gamepad.
>>
>>745995538

>>
>>745996745
>but everyone who played it will tell you it's a straight improvement over the original.
Nope. It's a downgrade to the original in basically every sense.
>Significantly easier than the original.
>No Impossible difficulty, the "Impossible" difficulty is just Hardcore renamed, the highest the game goes up to is "Hard" and "Impossible" is just Hard with Hardcore downsides.
>Skin system now means that your guns do not do any damage at all until you rip the skin to get to the bone meaning at bare minimum your first two shots of any gun do no damage.
>Because of their gun reworks they also completely ruined the Force Gun in exchange for the Contact Beam finally being worse using as a gun instead of existing solely to sell off its ammo and the Ripper being worth using for once in the entire series and it's still not as good as other weapons.
>Zero-G has worse controls than both 2 and 3.
>Backtracking so now the entire pacing of the main story is all over the place because you have to go back to the Loading Bay just to go to Hydroponics rather than following where the tram takes you.
>Backtracking is mandatory if you want blueprints since 70% of them are now hidden behind security locked doors.
>Mercer dies to a flailing Hivemind tentacle immediately after you kill the Regenerator rather than willingly to an Infector in the cafeteria.
>Hammond now chases the ghost of his dead Asian buddy that he's been told multiple times is a Necromorph who had no build up as a character or care and dies in a way lamer way.
>Doors can now stunlock you for little to no reason if you stand in them for more than a second leading to situations like this being possible.
>Red-Eyed Necromorphs now make NG+ completely unfun to fight as they have the HP and damage of an Advanced Brute, typically come in groups, and respawn infinitely.
>DLC suits are completely different and worse than the original.
>The Stormtrooper suit is so much uglier and looks like a reject Punisher suit.

>>746002981
You'll find some complaints on GameFAQs when it came out saying the FMVs are the same resolution but stretched to 720p but I honestly never noticed it if they were stretched. That is the only potential downside I know of. Keep in mind if you emulate them they don't have the lighting issues the PS2 versions do on PCSX2 when upscaled but the text acts really funky showing random kana upside-down or invisible then visible before the whole statement is given.

I played them both on my PS3 when I was initially getting into Yakuza. Initially started with PS2 1, made Amon impossible because I missed a substory, put it off to the side because as a 100%er my mind cannot cope with that fact, then when 0 was coming over I remembered I didn't finish 1 so I picked up 1&2 HD and started from there with guides since I knew about missables now. Never had an issues, games looked great, and emulating I've only had the text issue really.
