Epic's plan was always retarded. Pissing on the face of their target audience, by rage baiting and other retarded statements, never improving their actual product / service, but rather trying sleazy practices like paying for exclusives.
>>
>>746003587
They didn't piss in the face of their target audience at all, I think you just incorrectly assume you were that target audience (I assume you buy video games). Their target audience was people who sell video games and they weren't shy about admitting it. I'm not saying that's a good audience to target, but they did so and treated this audience well.
>>
>>746003910
They'd have treated that audience better if they could actually sell their games.
>>
>>746004006

Steam's market dominance will eventually bite everyone in the ass. Gabe is awesome and sensible but he's not eternal and WILL leave this mortal coil one day. And on that day the beginning of the end will have happened. Human greed and stupidity will inevitably enshittify the platform, probably they'll go public and that'll be the final nail in the coffin. The entire Blackrock/Blackstone/whatever (((funds))) backing the industry will run in to get a piece of the carcass to be able to enshittify it futher and push agendas. Mark my words. I don't want it to happen, but mark my words.

What people don't understand is the same mentality that keeps consoles alive (except Xbox) does indeed exist on PC. The only difference is that instead of a hardware it is tied to a launcher. People built their gaming life on Steam. Steam achieved critical mass first. Even if a better competitor would arise it wouldn't matter. Steam would actively need to destroy itself to give a chance to anyone else. And even then people already have their libraries on Steam.

The reality of the situation that capitalism inevitably leads to one, two, maybe three key players owning specific markets. Then there is no chance for anyone else to enter that market unless the market undergoes over some unforeseen fundamental change.

It already did bite everyone in the ass. Thanks to steam pc went from kino pc only titles/genres to console port only because why make games for pc when you can make games for console and sell it at steam later? But I guess console secondaries who started using steam at 2015 get to larp as pc "chads" for being able to buy jrpg slop at steam store. Have fun mighty steam drones. You deserved everything that happened to you.

That's the funny part, they tried to sell their platform by claiming that they'd take less than the industry standard 30% cut, give millions to studios for timed exclusives on their platform, and shit like that. Yet at the end of the day, Steam still beat them in that department because they offered a shitload of infrastructure that was useful to developers, and simply by having the biggest storefront studios would still make more money on Steam by moving more product. The games that went EGS exclusive often missed out on the release hype that they could have gotten with Steam releases, and when those timed exclusives ended and the games released on Steam they never made up for it. To date, I think the only studio that ever succeeded despite being EGS exclusive is Supergiant.

A bunch of dudes I know only ever signed up for EGS for the free games, and never bought anything from their storefront. Make of that what you will.

>>746008996
Steam solved the issue of no one on PC being able to competently sell videogames without endless accounts, intrusive DRM, launchers and other bullshit. No one was really making a competent transition to digital distribution except for Steam who was willing to take the hit of being an early adopter.
Anyone trying to encroach on Steam now is doing so with the intent to replace Steam, which means unsolving everything that Steam solved. Even an exact replica of Steam releasing now would be worse than Steam.
No one wants to be just another GOG or Itch that operates on razor thin profit margins whenever it does manage to turn a profit.

possibility A: the have enough money, looks, and status to brute force there way in but don't understand what it takes to stay in the market

possibility B: Peter Principle on a corporate scale, it's why no one talks about GoG is because they are not trying to compete with steam or become #1, the goal is just to listen to communities reactions to things and react accordingly, The higher ups at Epic seems to just ignore what they are told and just assume the tactics they used in 90s and 00s with games will work here because that's where they found success, damn what others tell them.

They won't tell, but assume it's very low.
It's why they make so little money. They bring in people with free shit, but people who come for free shit are not customers. Steam was smarter with deep discounts, even someone buying a game at 99% gave you their payment information and is now psychologically attached to their purchase, so they're likely to come back and the bar to buying again is lower.
It's also why walmart often sells milk at a loss instead of giving it away. For their bottom line it would make virtually no difference, but you don't want people who just come for free shit.
>>
>>746013928
So you're saying Steam is engaging in monopolistic practices?
>>
>>746013928
Specifically, they can't sell *steam keys* for less. It's an important distinction because it ties the sale to the ecosystem. You can sell the game whereever you want, for however much you want, but you can't underbid steam while using steam resources.
>>
I remember hating Steam like 20 years ago because it ran like shit (which in retrospect I could blame on the dogshit internet connection I had at the time) but that was 20 years ago. Every other launcher runs like shit currently, except maybe GOGs thing but they might be the only other guys in business who aren't utterly retarded.

I remember them doing that. Except they didn't actually ask the devs, they simply lowered the price below steam and made up for the difference out of pocket. Devs got big mad because this destroys their marketing for sales, with external sites tracking the lowest price ever recorded which was now tainted by this artificially low price the devs would never set themselves. That lead to some devs delisting their games on epic because they weren't really making significant money on there anyways.
It truly is the valve chad vs the epic games virgin on a corporate scale, life imitates art.
>>
>>746009203
Supergiant mainly benefited because the EGS exclusivity period was just for their Early Access period of Hades. Then when they was over, they put out the full release and did their whole release celebration on Steam. A lot of people don't even remember that Hades was EGS exclusive for a while.
>>
>>746013928
You can sell it for cheaper anywhere else you please, you can fucking give it away for free (happened quite a lot with Epic), you just can't sell a Steam copy for cheaper than on the storefront itself, which is understandable.

That's the error, they took a tactic that works in the real world that can't in a digital space. In the real world offering free items in your store will get purchases because they had to physically drive and get there so they are more invested to actually shop and buy more things because that's less traveling on their part, they were coming to your store anyway for the free item. However, in digital space there is no friction like that, once the apps/storefronts are installed it's less than a few clicks and you can buy twenty Steam gas to then download your free Epic game, there is no sense of "well I'm here anyway I might as well buy [____]" because it's one click to close the Epic store front and one click to open the Steam one.

What's really fucking sad is this was all tried before Epic store and it failed miserably, first with EA Origins that was offering free EA title every month but they stop after a year because it wasn't leading to sales for then Xbox to try the very same idea the following which they tossed away because they noticed it was just showing spikes where people would log on, download the free game to log off so they then incorporated free games to the Xbox Gold service because PS model of that was the only thing that seem to be holding customers. But Timmy saw all of this and went "well this time it'll be different!" and tried the same idea but at a far more expensive scale and had the exact same outcomes as EA and MS: lots of downloads and no sales.
>>
>>746014004
>Devs are losing their jobs at an unprecedented rate, publishers are folding because of the chief pissbaby divisiveness
Good. Let them die so maybe they'll be replaced by people who aren't fucking retards.
>Literally reject them because they're obsessed with their stupid little chud fantasies game, fratboy humor and more
Start appealing to "stupid little chud fantasies, fratboy humor and more", and maybe the gamers will actually buy your shit.
>>
>>746014160
I have no fucking clue why they didn't do what MS and GoG did where instead of lowering all the store items they just did a reusable "on us" 25% off promo code that had to be put in when you bought anything stops that issue from happening and makes it clear that it's the store buying your game rather than looking at it as the game is cheaper.

That's the most mind boggling thing to all this, it's like the teams never look over even the last ten years of game marketing and what was done before.

soon GoG will (2008 was there start year) and surprisingly Xbox has, the store front is gone but 360 titles from 2006 still download and play fine on it which is insane when you consider there isn't many active 360s left.

Steam is very good for game industry.
All the beginner devs can release their shovelware on it that the ApprovedGamesâ„¢
platforms wouldnt tolerate. It fosters a spirit of free market that all big companies hate.
Also its very transparent about things like player numbers and user reviews, blowing all the shills out of the water when they try to claim some slop of the month has a gorillion players believe me bro.
>>
>>745996584
How about they actually try to compete with Steam by providing feature parity at a minimum, and then also drop all the anti-consumer crap such as giving developers bribes in order to stop them from selling on competing stores? Imagine how much bribe money they have paid out and if all that money actually went into improving their store instead. Fucking retards I swear.

>>746001207
Why would someone who put a small fortune into his steam library ever move to something else?
>>
>>746014813
The error was the inability to keep them truly exclusive. That was how the PS3 went from being the biggest loser to the #1 in sale by the end of it's life cycle was the aggressive amount of exclusive titles they kept buying which hurt 360 because MS wasn't securing nearly as many which was making the switch very easy.
>>
>>746014930
because it costs you nothing and other storefronts might have better features
emphasis on might, at this point there's no feature they can invent that can make people give a shit, steam has pretty much everything covered

Falseflag shit from 2015 is not gonna make me hate Gaben.
>>
>>746014930
This isn't a real argument, like if I buy a game on GOG the games I have on Steam don't disappear. You can buy games on other stores if there's an advantage to it, like in GOG's case the guarantee of being DRM-free and providing installers you can save forever. EGS on the other hand is literally worse in every way and cancerous in how they attempt to force you into their crap store.

>>746014982
They were unable to keep them exclusive because the market rejected their utterly obscene behavior. You cannot survive on Epic's bribes exclusively if fucking nobody actually buys your game and Epic can't pay bribes forever when nobody actually spends money on their store.

The bigger issues are gamers are very old any more and playing older titles.

Most people under 30 play less than two hours a day of any kind of game, the age demo of dedicated gamers is 35-42, stack on top of that is "forever games" that you are never suppose to leave that ecosystem so why buy new titles from any store front if you are still spending hours a day on that game you bought in 2019? The days of some young teenager burning through a game title over a month to then buy a new one are long gone.
>>
>>746013948
They don't even have shareholders. Like Valve, EGS is not publicly traded (except Tencent owning a huge chunk of the quotas)
>>
>>746014982
The issue is that if I can't buy a game on Steam I will just "buy" it on my local neighbourhood torrent tracker.
>>
>>746015147
>Epic's bribes exclusively if fucking nobody actually buys your game and Epic can't pay bribes forever when nobody actually spends money on their store.

That and unlike consoles you don't have much coding work to change it to other storefronts, it's like how a lot of GoG games still have the the Steam and Epic executables in the files, just turned off. A PS3 exclusive wanting to branch out would have to spend time and resources to port over to a 360 or PC.
>>
Even if something better than steam appears no one will use it because all their games are on steam!
>>
>>746015275
Bold of you to assume most steam buyers know how to do that.
>>
>>746015343
It can happen but it requires more moving parts than just throwing free games and deals at players
>>
>>746015147
>Epic's bribes exclusively

I see, I see
>>
>>746014663
I didn't expect that given the fate of GFWL.
>>
>>746015305
>it's like how a lot of GoG games still have the the Steam and Epic executables in the files,
It's typically for online features as Steam/Epic handles those. It's actually pretty fucking annoying because while the online features DRM either doesn't work (Epic) or has known workarounds (Steam, Spacewar - I am convinced Valve knows, they just don't care), I have to deal with all that instead of just running it on virtual LAN with friends.
>>
>>746014930
They won't, that's why you don't get them to "move" but offer something that can co-exist with steam. For example I have no problem opening battle.net launcher to play a blizzard game, it co-exists perfectly fine with my steam library.

>>
>>746015305
Yeah, the I'd say the PS360 era is the start of "modern" gaming but back then the PS3 and 360 were still architecturally very different, in-house engines were much more popular and cross-platform 3rd party options weren't as ubiquitous. It was definitely harder to port between the consoles (and PC) then. Nowadays both consoles just use yesteryear's AMD PC parts.

>>746015401

>>
>>746015415
agreed but they have surprisingly left it operating.
>>
>>746015401
Steam doesn't bribe people to be on their platform. Hell, if Timmy is to be believed Steam fleeces developers like crazy.
If a game is exclusive on Steam then it'a because the developers decided to not bother with anyone else.
Also, yeah, Epic used to bribe developers to be exclusive on their platform. This isn't even a conspiracy or anything, it's just a fact, they never even hid it from anyone.
>>
>>746015483
>None of which Valve paid for.
You act like a child. Direct money transfer isn't the only bribe. Think about journalists, studios doesn't pay them for better reviews, they are telling them that they will stop sending them early keys if they won't like review. No money involved and yet all understand that this is all about money - no early key - no early clicks - no revenue.
>>
>>746015456
For sure but you couldn't do that with a 360 to a PS3 title and vice versa. That was the core of my point. You can't put a 360 game disc into a PS3 and get it to work even with modding most titles are not built to talk to that different interface, meanwhile Epic to Steam to GoG it's the same PC just with a traffic cone telling you what channel it boots up on.
>>

Journos are utterly untrustworthy and at the same time completely unrelated to the discussion, you actually need to pay Valve if you want to put a game on Steam.
>>
>>746013387
Just use SteamCLI
>>
>>746014930
That's the thing, you don't need to "move to something else". PC storefronts are not environments you are stuck in. It's not like a console that you are stuck in whatever environment they provide.
Storefronts like GoG and Itch,io doesn't need you to install their launchers to play games bought on them. Sometimes they have a better product with a better price than steam, so I just buy on them because I don't care where I buy my stuff, I just buy the best I can get at the best price I can get.
Epic on the other hand, it's basically a worse Steam on almost every aspect. And the only reason I can see someone installing it is for the free games and nothing else.
>>
>>746015806
SteamCLI. Playing is a bit more tricky depending on what part of the steamapi the game takes advantage of.

An executive from Amazon trying to take the position of David would be monumentally tone-deaf.

Epic could have beaten Steam if they did three things right from the start:

1. Make the baseline launcher experience not suck.
2. Give away old but popular games for free.
3. Support Mac/Linux/Windows equally.

Then they would have had a chance. Now Steam is even further up ahead while dominating almost every popular niche (VR, cross-platform support, PC handhelds, modding, ...).

Had they done the above with 10 years down the road, they would have young adults now with their whole game collection on Epic. But all they got now are the people that play only one game all the time (they don't buy other games on your platform, just skins—did not need a storefront for that) and casuals that grab the free new popular game and don't come back until there is another one.

Akshually the Xbox Store respect your OG Xbox purchases as well if they are backward compatible though I'm not sure you could buy full games there.
The issue is really that Xbox is just a few years (TOPS) away from a massive crash where the entire ecosystem will implode. That is when both users and companies will face the reality aka there will be absolutely no reason for MS to keep the Xbox backend running. Ultimately this is a huge issue nobody talks about. Unless you buy games on GOG the moment your platform collapses for any reason you lost everything.

because those managers have a completely different mindset.
they don't care about the fine details of the projects, only about it getting done. and they will put their effort into exerting pressure to make it happen.
for realistic projects, this is an mindset that has a good chance of success, which will earn you the reputation as the guy who gets shit done when it succeeds. you pull ahead of people who tend to maybe overthink their approaches a bit too much, you simply deliver faster than them.
luck out often enough in a row (in the sense that all your projects are realistic, despite you never investigating if they are), and you'll make it to the top.
but it's just a numbers game and eventually you'll end up with a project that is not realistic, where the base assumptions are wrong, and then you get dumpstered by that mindset because you are not capable of figuring out why it's not working, all you know how to do is exert more and more pressure onto the teams to try and make it happen anyway.

most people are pretty retarded. even people who are supposedly intelligent.
back when I still worked in academia, we regularly had workshops with experts who'd provide us with wisdom like
>when you hit a writer's block, take a step back and think about what you even want to write
and then I'd look around and half of the audience was nodding and taking notes. and those were all postgrads, professors and so on.
I think most people just go through life mostly on autopilot. some just have a very capable autopilot so they make it very far despite never really questioning anything or thinking too hard about it.
>>
>>746023306

>because it costs you nothing
nothing financially, but it costs me convenience. now I have two different libraries I need to switch between.
that might seem very minor, but for a business that is entirely centered around convenience (which is why it's a digital storefront), that's a huge negative.

you'll have experienced that often enough in games, where you get a pop up that doesn't really do anything (like a confirmation window before buying something from the ingame merchant), but you have to click it away anyway, and it really starts to get on your fucking nerves quickly.
it's only a single button press every few minutes, but it significantly worsens the experience.
having to switch between Steam and EGS depending on which game I want to play is similar.

at this point, I don't think any approach really has a chance of success because there's simply no need for a competitor.
Steam does the job well enough, has proven itself to be reliable and does nothing to antagonize its customers.
Another store front would not even really introduce competition and lower the prices because the competition is not between the store fronts, but between the companies or individuals trying to sell their games, since there are way more games coming out than you could ever hope to play in multiple lifetimes.

here's what EPIC should do. or really anyone that wants to challenge Steam:
allow for a way to sync your game library from steam to whatever you have
so if someone has a steam library with Skyrim on it and you have Skyrim on your platform. you just give them the game on your platform if they prove ownership of the Steam account
then get really slutty on prices. people will migrate over to get the cheaper games and their steam library will follow them and will have little reason to return to Steam
>>
>>745996584
They need to do the same as GoG and let the game be yours, without DRM crap. It's the only way
>>
>>746035223
Steam doesn't even allow people to sell games at cheaper prices outside Steam, why would Valve allow gamers to sync their games across multiple libraries?
>>
>>746035430
Where did you take that lie from?
>>
>>746035430
Steam wouldn't allow it
you would just prove to Epic that you own the steam account then Epic would simply give you all the games that they have on their platform to your Epic account
>>
>>746035223
I wondered a long time ago why nobody trying to compete with Steam was doing that.

I also thought about using Epic when they were giving away better free games but I didn't want to feel like I was being forced to use it more than I really wanted to. If they just had a better selection of free games available at any time compared to Steam then more people would probably naturally use it. People trying to compete so hard with Steam don't seem to understand they end up making things feel more complicated rather than simpler and that's just not going to attract a lot of people.
>>
>>746001207
What they don't understand is that Steam essentially is what baby boomers thought car dealerships would be. A customer facing marketplace meant to work for the customer while curtailing the broader industry from shady tactics. All these other companies are acting like current car dealerships that work WITH the industry to screw over customers
>>
>>746035515
From legal documents and mouths of devs who tried to do that. Without a shadow of doubt Valve doesn't allow you to offer better deals elsewhere while selling at Steam. Making it impossible for other stores to compete with Steam. Anons can laugh and make fun of other store fronts but it's really that simple. Valve is abusing their dominant position to intentionally kill competition. It is not their business if a dev wants to sell a game for 1 dollar at a store and 100 dollars at steam. Maybe EU boomers will realize this and so something about it 50 years later KEK
Also There is a myth going around that price parity thing only applies to keys. That's an actual lie parroted by retarded steam bros.
>>746035556
And Valve bans the devs that engage in such practice with epic anyway because they can do it.
Was that your brilliant plan?
>>
>>746035903

Do what exactly? I'm asking you to post a source on whatever you are talking about because I know you're a lying idiot who will be unable to do so, even funnier when it's trivial to find games that are cheaper elsewhere because there's no such rule with Steam. You are a blatantly lying faggot that only makes the store you shill for look even worse.
>>
>>746035769
they would probably need insane licensing agreements with all their publishers
something like:
"we reserve the right to give your game away for free to users who submit proof of ownership on other platforms"
the publishers wouldn't stand to gain anything from such an agreement. I'm sure they could convince a bunch of indie studios to do it but studios like Ubisoft would sooner walk barefoot through broken glass before letting that fly
>>746035903
I'm pretty sure some devs already offer their game cheaper off steam then on. as well as ways to get free steam keys if they bought using their platform
>>
>>746035903
>Without a shadow of doubt Valve doesn't allow you to offer better deals elsewhere while selling at Steam. Making it impossible for other stores to compete with Steam.
That's the only way to compete with Steam? That seems dishonest.

>It is not their business if a dev wants to sell a game for 1 dollar at a store and 100 dollars at steam.
It is, because Steam offers a lot for the $100 fee you have to pay to get your game on there. Steam would probably increase that fee by a lot if people were allowed to do what you say because then they would actually be charging for all those services.

These are poor complaints about Steam just being in the dominant position and acting like that's not fair when they haven't really done anything abusive or to create a monopoly like people claim.

>>
>>746038180
>>746038005
If you want your 3rd world indie game to not have price parity on steam, then just don't offer it in their marketplace. Valve doesn't want you abusing their customers, so they're not letting you.
>>
>>746038180
Then the game just won't be on Steam. They don't *have* to let you sell it on their marketplace, unless your magic pretend government can make them do that too.
>>
>>746038392
Will you explain how denying gamers cheaper alternatives help them in any way?
>>746038429
Then why doesn't valve publicly disclose this? Why do they lie about this price parity practice? Is it even legal? I don't think so.
>>
>>746038180
It seems that Steam's price parity rule only applies to Steam keys. You could for example put your game on Steam for $50 and sell it on another platform for $40, but you couldn't list it on Steam for $50 and then sell Steam keys separately for $40 which essentially sidesteps Valve and takes away their cut of profit. I think you'd have a hard time finding a government who would be against Steam in that situation.

Even when Epic claimed to only be taking a 12% profit compared to Steam's 30%, it didn't seem to actually result in lower prices. If your only argument is that you want a bigger share of profits then I can understand being frustrated with that but it doesn't mean Steam is inherently doing something wrong.

>>746038562
>Will you explain how denying gamers cheaper alternatives help them in any way?
Sure. If you want to sell your Indian vampire survivors clone for $15, then you can sell it for $15 on steam and your gay knockoff storefront. If you want to sell it for $15 on your steam clone and $25 on steam then you can fuck off and just not list it on steam.
>>
>>746038645
Great, because you probably can't cope with being proven wrong. The same games were listed on Steam and Epic. Epic claimed to only take 12% profit, Steam took 30%. Yet, the price remained the same on both platforms and it's not because Steam was forcing that. Valve being the cause of higher prices is just bullshit that Tim Sweeney claimed when trying to get more people onto Epic and it didn't result in any benefits for customers on Epic.
>>
Piracy is superior to any DRM option including Steam, because that is what steam is, DRM
>>

>If you want to sell it for $15 on your steam clone and $25 on steam then you can fuck off and just not list it on steam.
You can actually do this if you want. You just can't sell Steam keys for less than the game is sold for on Steam because that's simply sidestepping Valve taking their cut of profit. Valve doesn't care what price you sell games for on other storefronts as long as it doesn't involve actual Steam keys.

Because it's not necessary. I work in an industry where the big dogs pay pennies on the dollar compared to what my store does, something I know because I ran the big dog's biggest store, and they can sell numerous products for less than it costs me to purchase them. Big stores have big leverage, this is how it has worked for the entire history of commerce, since price fixing always refers to how much you can sell things for, not how little. That being said, this is all elementary since Steam typically only does it for the sale of Steam keys, and they are perfectly justified in doing so since it's their platform.

You're correct, but it's also the case that Steam simply is better. In other words:

>In addition to the point above, people's entire gaming libraries are connected to their Steam Library, and it's annoying to have a divided up library across multiple launchers. Personally, I've literally bought games for a higher price just to keep it on Steam because I don't like opening Epic or Battle net for anything except for Fortnite or Overwatch (games I do not play anymore anyways)
>Steam has user profiles, a community market, discussion forums, guides, a mod workshop for games that support it, and user reviews

Proof? Everything I can find says it's only related to Steam keys needing to be sold for the same price. I haven't seen any devs saying they were forced to sell at the same price on Steam. I know this is ancient history, but Steam got a lot of loyalty from PC gamers for a reason.

This
GoG lets me buy a game, drop that sumbitch into Steam, and use Steam input for controller support and remapping.
That alone means Epic will never compete.
Steam is functionally useful as a tool, while the Epic launcher is a piece of shit that I resent any time I've had to touch it.
Free isn't good enough, I should get paid for my suffering every time I have to look at it.
>>
>>746040404
>They can't reduce the price on other stores to be less than Steam
Literally every developer does this though. If Valve actually has a rule for this they're clearly not enforcing it.
>>
>>746040612
Saying you want games to be sold at the same price is one thing, actually kicking a game off Steam for selling it separately for a lower price elsewhere is entirely different.

Sweeney said that games on Epic would be cheaper because they take less profit from each sale, but the games were sold at the same price. No game dev said it was because Steam forced them to do it. They just wanted more money for themselves, which is understandable. But the claim that Steam is the one preventing lower game prices is shown to be false by real world examples.
>>
>>746040404
Listen kid, Amazon fucks people way harder than that. Retail has a concept called keystone pricing, meaning sale price is double whatever wholesale is, or a 100% markup. This is normal, everyday shit and it means that the retailer gets 50% of the final sale price, already higher than Steam's egregious, hateful 30%. Amazon is the biggest retailer on the planet, they do not get normal terms and retailers are lucky to sniff 30% of the final sale price, but they take it because the reach is so monumental that losing 40% of the revenue is better than losing the visibility and sales.

These threads are really funny to me
It all boils down to console peasant vs PC master race mentality.
>but muh parity muh monopoly YOU LOST MONEY DON'T YOU CARE
No I don't. I can and do pirate my shit if I want to. I simply compare the service steam offers for their price vs. getting it for free myself. If the game updates often, it might be easier to pay for it than to go manually track down those releases. If the game is niche enough, it might not have a recent release at all, and I'd have to play an older version. If I want to support the dev with some money, and most importantly push the game in the steam algorithm, then I'll buy it. Through steam. Because no one cares about ebin games and I'm not supporting that shit with a single cent.

Because of this i never downloaded EGS.
They tried to buy their way in with exclusive deals and fucking everyone over, obligating people to download that shit store that barely manage to work(to this day still doesn't have basic features that steam had since 2009)
And when that didn't work Timmy tried the "we care about developers" arc, trying to force Valve into signing worse deals in order to make steam a worse plataform over the time
AND when that didn't worked either, they went to funding games, which is also not working because no one buys games on EGS, Alan Woke 2 flopped and Project: Robot will flop as well.
>>
>>746040404
To be fair even games that went Epic exclusive rarely dropped the price, hell one of first $70 games on PC was Epic exclusive.

twitch wouldn't let me recover my old account after their third-party 2FA service broke, since I used it previously to move my number over for something else. for some reason, this didn't sync to twitch

for some reason, twitch thought I was still using the old phone number, and the migration tool would not work because it was already done. they said the details I gave them about my account were wrong and refused to fix the issue. even though I'd be signed in on my phone (I just wasn't able to change any major account credentials or sign in elsewhere) and see all the shit that they said was wrong. they repeated this after I pointed it out and they just closed the ticket.

I genuinely have more respect for tendies and snoys, than so called "PCMR" faggots, hating on consoles (yes they are shit), while sucking a DRM cock, this is peak hypocrisy. Steam is a DRM cuckstore, why is this so hard to accept? True freedom comes with GOG, Itch or piracy, as well as dumping your old console games (or owning them on disc/cartridge).

>steam is so good that retards need to invent first world problems
It's basically first world problems, but SOME people want to truly own their shit, I know most people don't care, they view games as an experience, like a movie you watch with your netflix sub, but I really appreciate game devs handing out DRM free installers, that you can keep forever or a game fully on disc/cartridge, that you can (hopefully) back up and play on an emulator in the future.

Years of being in the market and adapting to the stuff that is happening (willingly or forcefully) made Steam into a platform that can be mostly trusted...along with GOG. EGS however is not. i stopped playing even their free games because every time i wanted to play freebie on EGS i had to w8 3 minutes for it to launch. (probably less desu, maybe 1 min but it felt like it was minimum 5 min every time.) I gave up on playing EGS games more times than i can count, bought 2 on steam and pirated few other. Threw out every launcher because they are all laggy shit compared to steam. Not sure about GOG launcher tho.
PS. When Gaben dies i'll probably have to return to full pirate because whatever faggot takes after Gaben will fuck me and unlike Gaben will give nothing in return.

>Steam is full of bloat and ads.
Yes that is very true saar steam very much bloated saar please redeem the needful epic client saar.
>>
>>746050826
You'll have to explain to me why vendor lock in is good when Valve does it
>>
>>746051025
The internet was too shit to facilitate just sending files directly from one computer to another back in the day retardbro.
>>
>>746051054
Pokemon Gamma Emerald and my Femboy Roommate
>>
>>746027056
Just clear your cache, set it to small mode, and restart your PC, it'll go from 500MB to like 30-60.
>>
>>746051120
>vendor lock in is good when Valve does it
but valve doesn't do it
at no point are you forced to only use steam on your hardware. they don't block software you can install
>>
>>746051069

Huh?

>low iq nigger licks jewells boots nonstop because of delusion that ballmersoft would otherwise take over pc gaming when they couldn't even break into smartphone market
you can't make this up lmao
>>
>>746051287
Wait a minute are you telling me there's a dark mode for task manager?
>>
>>746051229
You don't need to use steam at all since you can just pirate from steam. Did you not know this?
>>
>>746051313
>microsoft couldn't control the market they had near 100% marketshare on
your valve derangement syndrome clouds your judgement
>>
>>746051339
Yes, is that winjeet 10 or 11?
>>
>>746051376
did you? i never claimed you have to
that's what a lack of vendor lock in is
>>
>>746051441
10, I'm never downgrading to 11, I don't even upbloat my OS.
>>
>>746051524
holy based, but I hope you are in the EU for the extended security updates, otherwise please switch to Win10 LTSC and sorry, I don't think there is dark mode for 10. This is new-ish in 11, 25h2.
>>
>>746051505
Then why are you giving PC storefronts money and shilling PC storefronts?
>>
>>746051293
How are you not following the logic here?
>consumer grade PCs become a thing
>people make games for them
>problem: internet sucks, can't send large files efficiently
>solution: put the files on a disk
>internet gets better
>no need for disks anymore
>turns out PC is an open platform where users control their files
>disks go the way of the dinosaur for the platform
People get uppity at consoles ditching disks because console manufacturers are scumfuck bastards. People know their greed and know physical is the only way to guarantee ownership. This is because, unlike PC, a console is a locked down box you can't fuck with without risking your 500$ box being remotely bricked by the manufacturer. PCfags don't care about physical because we control the files. Steam can't ping your PC to remote delete a game you bought and installed, a console can. And if Steam ever tried to ransom your games like a console then other stores would immediately step in to swoop up all those disgruntled customers. Again unlike consoles where only the console manufacturer controls what gets sold on it and for how much.
>>
>>746051610
I don't care about security updates. I also rawdog darkweb sites daily for years, nothing ever happens.
>>
>>746051639
because i want to see games being made for pc?
are you fucking stupid?
>>
>>746051437
is the microsoft storefront with 99% marketshare in the room with us right now?
>>
>>746051817
windows you fucking faggot
look up what windows S mode is
>>
>>746051732
Does this logic not apply to other platforms? Just Valve?
>>
>>746051890
why would i want to go anywhere else?
valve is currently advancing the platform as a whole with linux support and is the only one with an actual plan for the future
>>
I just read this whole thread, I hate the /v/ mentality so much, why are people like this? Why are people cucks and brand worshipers? What the fuck happened? I feel like I'm some mentally advanced chad, free from those DRM chains, yes we all use Steam, but god damn are you really that mentally ill? Or am I the weird one for switching to Gnu/Linux and becoming increasingly more suspicious and hating on DRM shit?
>>
>>746023045
>there is simply no need
You don't know that. You assume this is the best you can get for your money when it is simply never true because competition leads to innovation.
>>
>>746051660
>PCfags don't care
PCfag here. We care. It's just the PC vegans who don't care because they aren't consumers. If they were consumers they would be in favor of pro consumer choices such as providing the option of ownership rights to your consumers
>>
>>746051978
>why would i want to go anywhere else
So your logic only applies to you and nobody else? Is that even logic, or just an opinion?
>>
>>746052346
why the fuck are you veering off topic and being an armchair psychologist?
>>
>>746052301
>If they were consumers they would be in favor of pro consumer choices such as providing the option of ownership rights to your consumers
GoG is right there tho? Nobody is forcing you to use steam.
>>
>>746052198
it's a storefront m8
there's not much to innovate, it could just be a bit faster
>>
>>746052301
>PCfag here. We care. It's just the PC vegans
you're not fooling anyone, you tendie poorfag
only consoleniggers obsess over ownership as if it ever meant anything beyond being so poor you need to sell games
>>
>>746051880
Windows shit mode would flop even without steam retard. Windows Store sucks, Metro apps suck, EdgeHTML sucks, nobody uses the store even for downloading programs. Microsoft can't make anything good after Windows 7 and it's sad if you bootlick valve only because of microflop boogeyman.
>>
>>746052483
GoG doesn't provide ownership either
>>
>>746052301
PCfag#2 here, I also care. But even if valve goes down, I really don't care, because I have my favorite games already backed up.
>>
>>746052682
How sure are you that I don't own multiple PCs?
>>
>>746052784
>it would flop
yeah, people said the same about windows 10
and what happened?
people now cling to it because 11 is worse
the key here is not having any fucking choice, retard
and if not for valve fighting it you wouldn't have any choice
>>
>>746052932
>GoG doesn't provide ownership either
It does, at least in the way I care. I can burn installers on CD and copy them on my USB stick and go to my brothers room and install it on his computer, go back to my room and play it as well. And even if gog dies, I will still have the installer. Good luck trying to do that on Steam without goldberg emu
>>
>>746053064
because you admitted to being so poor you only have xp machines
you're poor and retarded, shut the fuck up
>>
>>746052993
What does that have to do with ownership?
>>
>>746053187
>What does that have to do with ownership?
I don't know
>>
>>746053163
I'll keep speaking, thanks for the offer however, fanboy.
>>
>>746051978
>only one with an actual plan for the future
LMAO what plan, they plan to be a yacht company not a gaming one
>>
>>746053152
That's preservation, not ownership.
>>
>>746053321
fex? proton? linux support? not going fucking broke like gog or epic will?
valve's plan is to make all games available anywhere and to liberate people away from microsoft, sony, nintendo, apple and android and forcing them to get raped in the open market
>>
>>746053359
transferability of a license doesn't have anything to do with playing games
>>
>>746053461
>fex? proton? linux support? not going fucking broke
lmao all these nothings and they barely even do anything to progress these. consumer PC parts are going away and you won't be able to build a linux PC in the future

Valve are DONE, they are pivoting to underwater research as thats their main focus, all they do for gaming now is do nothing and maintain the store till its gone
