2 was my first GTA. I was so mad when 3 came out and ditched basically everything that made 2 great. No dynamic respect system, switching from the freeform progression system to a linear story, and worst of all, full 3D camera. The top down view was the soul of GTA until then, and although 3 had it as a selectable camera angle for legacy purposes, it was dogshit.I realize now that most of those complaints were childish nitpicks, but I'd still pick GTA2 over pretty much any other installment.

GTA3 was just a huge step back in terms of gangs and gameplay. It started the whole cinematic movie trend with the series, constant loading. I think it was also the last game to have original music and then it went full retard with licensed music that would get removed from later versions and paying Hollywood voice actors because 3 got so big. The people who made GTA 1&2 were also bought by Take2 and turned into Rockstar by the Housers. 2, like Chinatown Wars, is just fun. You turn it on and you get to play right away. Later Rockstar games just got worse and worse with the simulation stuff. I still want a game like GTA2 but for modern systems. The closest we got was Shakedown Hawaii and American Fugitive.
>>746003846Because I only had a Dreamcast at the time I didn't even know there was a day mode only on PS1 (worst version that doesn't have the soul of the night mode) and that PC lets you boot up either mode before start. I wish someone could make a day/night cycle mod for both. Also because I had the Dreamcast I didn't know the songs would keep playing if you exited the car. The song just starts from the beginning, so I have the soundtrack burner into my brain. Also it's cool that the further you drive from the radio antenna the lower quality the radio gets.

As a kid I always thought that the reason there were no children pedestrians in the game was because the streets of Anywhere City are so rough that they're not allowed outside. One thing I liked about GTA 2 is that the cities actually felt alive. For example, the way crowds scatter when they hear gunfire or the random muggings or the skirmishes that happen at the gang territory boundaries. There is simlar behavior in 3/VC/SA but it feels so lifeless in those games.
