How do Mass Effect fans still cope about Mass Effect 3 being ''good'' when it was the game that killed the trilogy and the series?
Everything about Mass Effect 3 is worse than the two first superior games.
Is it some millennial nostalgia coping that ME3 was ever good?
>>
>>746011461
By acknowledging that ME2 is the best entry in the series
>>
>>746011545
ME2 being better doesn't change the fact ME3 FUCKING SUCKED ASS!!
>>
>>746011461
ME3 fans mainly exist because of historical revisionism and this board's need to be contrarian. There was also a vocal minority of people saying that only the ending was bad and the rest of the game was good, if someone says this they you should just nod and ignore them like they are a mentally challenged toddler showing you some shit they smeared on a wall.
The only other ME3 defenders are those that blame ME2 for not expanding the plot and therefore leaving ME3 to wrap everything up. To some extent I do agree, ME1 ends with the Reapers are coming and ME2 ends with the Reapers are coming. That being said Hudson was the retard who wanted a trilogy instead of a franchise, he also wanted the games to come out on the same console generation so you reap what you sow.

I still don't get the obsession with Reapers. They are not interesting, at all. Just say they were indefinitely delayed after ME1 and eventually arrive and kill everyone Eldritch Horror style at some random point in the future, but functionally it will never happen since games won't cover it

Make each game a different adventure, exactly just like Star Trek/Stargate episodes are

Mass Effect 2 was perfect at this, having many cool separate stories with a light overall narrative to tie them together season finale like
Other games should work this same. Eventually you get to make a new MC, Shepard can show up in crossover episode
>>
>>746011461
It killed the series, but it did not kill the trilogy. Besides, good stories need to have an ending. Or what, did you want the franchise to continue in perpetuity forever? They tried doing that with Andromeda, and look how that turned out.
>>
>>746011461
Andromeda killed the series anon, 3 just had consequenceless choices, cringe dialogue, a lazy ending and questionable dlc
>>
>>746012453
3 didnt have a ending it was just ''Now adventure Shepard with DLC!!!'''

FPBP.
ME1/2 is the pinnacle of vidyas. ME3 ruined everything but it didn't make the previous games bad.

It’s been 14 years and this board is quite literally the only place left on the internet that still hates ME3

They exist because there was always a lower common denominator below the placement of the franchise up until ME3, ready to eat slop as soon as BioWare decided to dumb the franchise down for them. I noticed a lot of 'bro' guys in high school started talking about Mass Effect when it came out in 2012. They bought it on PS3 with no idea of the rest of the series, because "It's a sick shooter" and it came out shortly after CoD that year or something. I just remember 3 bros buying "Mass 3" in London when we went there, and then asking me "Yo anon, wanna play some Mass over skype tonight?"
>>
>>746012525
I hate that this is sort of true, because the lowest common denominator thought 3 was good except the ending, but it took Andromeda to make journos and gamers go
>"OHNONONONO HAHAHAHA"
but while some say 2 was the cardinal sin, I won't argue it isn't where it was derailed but the game was pretty cool, and not completely soulless. ME3 wasn't soulless either, but it really was where the franchise just hit a wall and couldn't recover unless you unfucked it somehow. And from where I stand Andromeda was pretty shit but it did more to recover the brand than it actually did to damage it.

On one hand there's things in Andromeda so painfully mediocre that I can't even play it for long without turning it off. But on the other hand it also has some cool ideas and a return to a slightly more ME1-styled thing. And people getting filtered only because the production sucks just shows what a bunch of midwits everyone were. ME3 already has writing that is as horrid as Andromedas. Not as obviously bad, but when you think about it, it is pretty fucking bad. And Andromeda only made people mad because it's too "LE QUIRKY" and the faces look awful. But in terms of the IP itself, this means very little to me. Nothing about 1 Mass Effect game hitting the wrong tone and failing its actual game development means the franchise is irrecoverable to me. It just means that they're 1 game away from proving that wrong.

ME3 was not that. ME3 was taking the remainder of any potential the series had, and just running it into the ground, or parking it in the laziest spot they could reach, and expecting people to give them awards for it. The ambition-to-failure ratio is so much higher with ME3, and the failures are so much more devastatning than ANYTHING that happens in Andromeda.

And I especially hate it because journos did nothing but defend, and pretend about ME3, and then Andromeda, it's as if they prepared to course-correct themselves to show "look we can dunk on Mass Effect!".

>>
>>746016280
not really, me2 was essentially a spin off/side story that got treated as a sequel. Everything wrong with me3 is it's own fault
>>
>>746016598
ask AI to proofread your posts before you make them, ESLbro
me2 was a terrible sequel which did nothing to set up me3, that's why they had to throw together a dlc which comes down to "lol, we didn't need sovereign, we are still coming"

absolutely not. 2 has the most shallow gameplay of them all. yes, even worse than andromeda. also me3 is at least a mass effect game. me2 is a side story set in the same world but it has nothing to do with the main plot. you can play me1>me3 and miss nothing important.
>>
>>746011461
why are you making mass effect threads daily?
>>

This.
ME2 furthered the plot of the Reapers. Before we knew nothing except that the cycle exists. Now we know they reproduce through the species they slay, and we have a potential macguffin in the Collector Base if we kept it, which to me seems like a great opportunity to distinguish the Paragon/Renegade run of ME3 between whether Cerberus ends up making headway in an "unethical manner, but it stops the invasion" or Cerberus is the enemy and "we must make sacrifices in order to come out on top of the invasion with our morals intact" etc, but with more heroic deaths and sacrifices.

What they could have done with ME2/3 was treat ME2 like the Morrigan Ritual in Dragon Age Origins, and ME3 like the Archdemon Fight and Epilogue of that story. Use ME2 to plant the seeds of a lot of things that roughly decides whether the player just wants to survive at the cost of something heroic, or if we're heroic and selfless enough to go down with the ship if we save other people, and then largely decide things in ME3 based on that choice template.

They did do that for some parts. I love how keeping Maelon's Data or destroying it entirely determines if Eve survives or not. That's how I wanted everything to matter in 3, but it's a strangely minor choice from ME2 that ends up having larger impact than the Rachni Queen or the Council decision from ME1, and it shouldn't have been like that.

The minor choices should've had a notable effect, and the major choices (Rachni, Council, Human Councilor, Collector Base) should've had huge moments somewhere in ME3 where it changes an entire scene or two into a slightly alternative scenario, and it wouldn't have needed to balloon the scope of the project to achieve it.

And otherwise, ME3's issues don't really stem from ME2's lack of whatever. They stem from BioWare once again deciding that ME3 needs to be its own coat of paint. It suddenly has to be almost a different genre, like a sad war story instead of a sci-fi space opera.
>>
>>746011461
The crazy thing about ME discussion will always be hearing for years about how ME1 is "le hardcore rpg" only to actually finally play it and see that all the rpg mechanics are just vestigial time wasters. The rpg mechanics were already nearly totally gone.
2 still the best.

>>746012209

thematically, I think it still stays on point until the ending. It always was going to end on the power of friendship or badass hero saves the day against all odds, but this was at the time where all western writing got incredibly insecure and self-conscious that they had to be subversive and totally original
>oh whats that anon? You predicted how this was going to end? Well surpise! Shepard loves cock! Oh you thought this was going to be happy ending? Surprise! I'm such an original writer that I took random endings from other popular mediums and tried to pass them off as my own!
What really kills me3 is the atrocious pacing, repetitive themes (every fucking mission is the same thing over and over, oh fuck its all over; oh fuck shepard help us; wow you saved the day, have some war assets). Also it didn't help that the writer giving into every marketing consultants demand like a simp over a twitch streamer, filling the universe with real life celebrities with wooden acting.
The only moments that are any good are moments with the original crew, whenever I play through with it I feel like an out of touch old man hanging out with his friends that are still alive, while the rest of the cast dabs on the chopped unc
>>
>>746013207
Mass Effect 3 is my least favorite title in the series, no question. It's the most streamlined one by far and even had a "no choice" mode removing the defining feature of the series so you could play it like a traditional shooter to draw casuals. You can tell that design choice ended up having a impact for the rest of the game with the way conversation wheels ended up neutered (reducing it to just Paragon vs Renegade when there was previously a middle ground) or just straight up removed (ie. Normandy "conversations"), not to mention, the way it drastically reduced your squad mates compared to ME2. The game felt more like a hollow rip-off of other trending AAA shooters at the time rather than a genuine Mass Effect continuation.

>thematically, I think it still stays on point until the ending. I also think by the time we complete Rannoch ME3 always starts to feel like "Maybe this isn't so bad", ignoring how Rannoch is a little hokey for a second. Because as you say, it's managed to keep a throughline of "uniting the galaxy" but honestly I'm not sure about it other than its euphoric feeling.

The first time I cured the Genophage I felt like I was being served McDonalds by a 5-star restaurant, and Rannoch I didn't hate so much as I just kinda went "Oh Legion died..." and didn't know or really care why because the dialogue was so generally meh to me.

ME2 wasn't like that, and ME1 wasn't like that either. ME2 there's definitely coherency issues, like how they're asking us to recruit all those crewmen but they don't actually have a scene that runs through the dossiers. It's just in the questlog, and it's like "Who is 'The Convict'??? What am I doing on a prison ship??" but then that's a few pages in the book skipped per character that's made up by excellent demonstration of who they are, and the simple premise of the game.

ME3 feels like it wants to be the alpha and omega of everything, and that's the wrong approach. Mac Walters asking the writers "We're resolving the GENOPHAGE!" and just handing a note to the Genophage Lead (John Dombrow) saying "You're gonna resolve this backstory!" and what vision/direction were anyone left with then, but to make every single chapter of the game feel like its own completely disjointed 3-act story? That's the approach they took with Tuchanka, but it really should not have been written like that.
>>
It's nice to see people still talking about Mass Effect... I'm replaying ME 1 with the Legendary Edition, but with a lot of mods I never played with before
>>
>>746018968
ME3 has worst writing in the game franchise
>>
>>746020250
It should've been more like
>Reapers are here but how do we beat them?
>Shepard, it's Mordin. Can't talk, come to Salarian homeworld etc.
>Potential help from Krogan, and lead on a Reaper Base on Tuchanka. Vast knowledge. Lead on how to defeat them!
>Commander, Mordin's right. It's the best lead we've got, let's follow him.
>The Krogan aren't gonna like this Shepard... they'll think we're using them like sacrificial lamb to save the other species.
>No, no, wrong advice! Everyone aboard Normandy please listen. Help my work, help your species, Krogan can be cured some day if we defeat Reapers first!
>But you've always defended your work on the Genophage, Mordin?
>Yes, yes. But getting old. Reaper presence has ways to... give second thoughts. Could be the end tomorrow! Either way, can't cure it. That was long ago!
You go to Reaper Base on Tuchanka and it's kinda like a mini suicide mission with a coordinated attack needed, and old faces show up over 3-4 missions. There's an artefact at the center which can build the superweapon. Most live through this chapter, and prepare for the Final Assault for later in the game.
>Final Assault
>You've also helped the other species
As part of the final rush, everyone's in line on Earth or the Citadel (wherever it is)
>The opportunity to cure the Genophage comes up.
>Opportunity to convert Reaper-geth code to healthy code comes up
Correct decisions unlock these options
>Epilogue
>20 minutes of "post-game" exploration/cutscenes, shows how the aftermath of the war has people working on a Cure or Sabotage it. Whether the Geth are enslaved, destroyed or freed. All depends on the build-up over the course of the story, not "Escapades" that happened and resolved themselves prior to the finale.
>>
>>746018131
its funny that mass effect 2s combat is glaringly and objectively just a worse version of 3s and no one on v acknowledges this. you can make a cause for 1 vs 3 because 1 has the individual cooldowns and some other stuff but 3 is just a straight upgrade over 2 in terms of gameplay
>>
>>746017536
>ME2 furthered the plot of the Reapers.
No, it created a plot where there didn't need to be any while blowing up the foundations that ME1 had built itself on.
>>
>>746018729
Yes. It was never an action shooter.
>>
>>746020760
Because it isn't true. The encounter-design is more strategic and thoughtful in 2, and the enhancements made to the "feel" of combat in 3 are ultimately meaningless when the encounter design sucks and enemies are thrown right in front of you in most levels, or every room results in some type of horde mode. Parts 2's combat are actually tower defense, and gives really fun RPG opportunities to flex the classes, where you have to pick off enemies at distance using either snipers or guns, or your abilities before your cover is blown. In 3 the combat feels really mindless in a lot of levels and everything is loud and annoying. The guns feel overly experimental and weird, like a lack of thoughtful design went into whatever they decided to go ahead and implement.
>>
>>746020838
Nah. Its biggest miss is not characterizing the Terminus Systems as a larger political faction in the series, to flesh out the lore beyond 1 and potentially set up an internal conflict in the universe to contrast the invasion in 3. Instead of this they doubled down on micro conflicts and the Genophage and the Geth, which ends up being rather consistent with 1, while setting up Cerberus as something more than just a cookie cutter side quest thing, to the point where Cerberus is just an entirely new faction of lore in the second game, and kinda doesn't even matter to 1.

The problem then is that 3 largely pretends ME2 didn't happen, and proceeds to reframe Cerberus as the generically evil backdrop villains they used to be, and dumbs down the micro-conflicts to piecemeal resolutions that continually undermines the tension in the central plot, and then they also proceed to drop any development they made on the Reapers from 2, and avoid explaining anything about them for 99% of the game, only to have the Catalyst introduced in the final sequence and try and create a new plot for the series out of thin air at the 11th hour of everything.

Those issues are 3's issues, not ME2's.
>>
>>746011461
I enjoyed most of 3, the problem with 2 story-wise is it almost felt like filler. The worst thing about 3 isn’t the ending it’s characters like James should never exist much less be one of the few squadmates
>>
>>746020930
mass effect 3 features far more viable and fun power and weapon combos than 2. ending the class restrictions and adding far more detonador and powers that work against more defense types was a massive upgrade. I would respond to your individual points but everything you said is pretty much a subjective vaguery so its not really worth discussing
>>
>>746016598
3 was a rush job made in 2 years. It’s a miracle it turned out as good as it did with DLCs later helping to improve the game.

>>
>>746021489

>>
>>746011461
three is a lot better than andromeda, which is what actually killed the series
>>
>>746021407
The detonator/combo is candy. It doesn't heighten the experience after 30 hours. It gets tiresome and repetitive, and annoyingly loud, same as how they added Shepard going "OOOOAAAH" every time I do Charge, and then Nova looks so cool, until you've locked yourself into "Nova->Charge->Nova" for 30 hours to cheese the shield replenishment, and forgotten what gave combat suspense.

Then you replay the trilogy again and remember "Oh right, actual strategy was happening in 2."

And ME1 and ME2 also have bosses. 3 has scripted story enemies like Kai Leng or the Rannoch Reaper. I much prefer Saren (without the Horde Mode spawns from Legendary Edition), The Human Reaper or Collector Praetorians, or Tela Vasir, to all of these.

The Clone Shepard fight is pretty good though, but I don't always do Citadel DLC because I think it's so depressing that they had to strip the entire story out of the game to make a DLC with all the characters they failed to utilize properly.

The ones who keep bitching about ME2 all day for sure. The reason people left wasn't 2. The franchise started getting really popular with that one. But 3 was hyped, because of 2, and due to more marketing, and then only the multiplayer fans stuck around, and most generic gamers and core Mass Effect fans moved on through 2012 and 2013 because the ending alienated the whole fandom.

if you hate repetitive powers you must really hate 2 because each class only has 4 and usually 1-2 of them are completely worthless. take infiltrator for example. you have incinerate, tactical cloak, and disruptor ammo which is essentially just another passive. cryo ammo and ai hacking are worthless so in reality you have 2 powers for your 25 hour playthrough

Something that's never talked about is also just the anticipation that builds up in the interim between releases. Moreso than DLCs or patches or mods, this is what newcomers miss. When you had between January 2010 (ME2's release) to March 2012 (ME3's release) to speculate, you didn't necessarily know what ME3 was gonna be, but you had built up just enough of an identity to what you THOUGHT Mass Effect was and wasn't, that when we got 3 it just felt wrong somehow.

I saw this happen again in the Dragon Age Inquisition fandom. It's easy to forget that Inquisition spawned its entire self-contained fandom of Solas fangirls and just latecoming gamer-girls who don't actually like DA Origins, but they looooove DA2 and DAI. And they were also speculating, and becoming "experts" about what should happen in DA4. Then Veilguard came out, and it wasn't the wokeness that filtered them.. it was everything else. What happened to Tevinter, the fact that the sequel doesn't even have Inquisitor as the playable character, and Solas's plot inevitably not being exactly what they thought.

That was what ME3 was like to me. I got super excited in February 2012 when they released the PC Demo for the first level, Sur'Kesh and Multiplayer. We had already seen E3 footage of the same areas... but it dawned on me as I was playing it that it just didn't FEEL like the sequel I was looking forward to. The tone was not right. The "Child" in the intro pissed me the fuck off at how lazy it seemed. The piano music doesn't sound like Mass Effect music. And something about the dialogue feels like it's dumbed down for absolute retards this time.

With all of that I just ended up being miserable when it came out and I imported my save. ME3 just didn't feel like "Mass Effect" to me. And for some reason, I didn't have that problem with 2, even though you can easily pinpoint how extremely different it is.

BUT, I also went DIRECTLY between ME1 to ME2, the first time I played both, in Jan 2010.

They failed to utilize them in the DLC as well. Jack, Miranda, Grunt, Samara, Kasumi, Jacob and Zaeed are all missing. Citadel DLC was only ever good in the context of the depressing realization that they had messed up the entire story arc with the ending, and that it wasn't a joke or a mystery but just BioWare being stupid, and there's no easy landing/happy ending for Shepard in a more intelligent narrative that exists anywhere and almost zero reason to start replaying them to see how different and cool ME3 can become... and then waiting a full year (early 2013) to get a DLC that just says
>Hey return to Mass Effect, and get QUALITY TIME with the CHARACTERS, and just be happy.

ME3 was so depressing and the lack of every moment you had hoped for with certain characters, as part of the main plot, was so huge and your lingering attachment to the brand was still so hurt, that it actually felt like some kind of magic trick back then. You hadn't played the series in a full year, and you had given up on the lore and story, but you still cared about the cast. And then the DLC ends with the "The best" scene that acts as an acknowledgment that no matter what, the characters were what made you feel emotionally attached to Mass Effect.

But BioWare started psyopping themselves ever since into wrongfully believing that "It's the characters" that makes anything about their games good. Every time they teased Andromeda, Anthem or Dragon Age they'd have some moron in their PR reel going "It's no the plot, but THE CHARACTERS that matter." and that's largely why MEA ended up being an unserious, millenial piece of shit because the only legacy talent left there were telling themselves that Citadel DLC was their big recovery from the ME3 disaster, so if you make everything "More Citadel DLC" it will automatically be better.

I loved Vanguard in 2 and I hate it in 3. It's too extra, and I realized sometime during the Priority Earth level that I actually wasn't enjoying it as much. If you love it so much it reveals that you care more about vibes than play mechanics. But I also stopped enjoying its vibe.

It's like going from a Led Zeppelin record to KoRn.

I replayed it recently
I think it just fumbles the ending. That's it. Not just the three choices; but the illusive man's fate as well. I do think that a final raid with Admiral Anderson dying right before crossing the finish line was a good choice, but everything else wasn't
Lord knows I wouldn't mind a great trilogy having a bad ending in the big 2026. Now games are shit from start to finish

The characters are the most important part but BioWare lost all talent to write good characters. Now they’re all boring at best and gay ugly freaks at worst.

My first Bioware game was BG1, in 1998. I didn't have a PC at the time, so I would skip school and go to a net cafe, and because they would uninstall the game from the PC I was playing on after I left, every time and deleted my saves, I must have gone through Candlekeep a hundred times alone. I later got a PC and played through every Bioware game that released on PC since, Tales of the Sword Coast, I still have the box on a shelve over my head, BG2, my favorite at the time game ever, NWN and its expansions, KotoR, Jade Empire didn't come out on PC for a while. I actually got it for $5 while I was serving in the military, at a book and various electronics store. I picked it up, even as I couldn't play it until I went home, 6 months later. I remember getting really made about DA, because it had been teased as far back as 2004, and by that time it was 2006 and it still wasn't out. When I left the army, it had just been announced that ME1 was coming to PC, I played through Jade Empire, which was nice, although the ending levels were kinda retarded, and then ME1. With DA:O in late 2009 and ME2, now my new favorite game ever, I just couldn't believe what amazing games Bioware were releasing back to back. But everyone could see that DA2 and ME3 were being rushed. I played the DA2 demo and it was easily a 6/10 game, and while I knew that ME3 was probably not going to be a 9/10 game, I hoped that there would be enough there to ... starting the Reaper War in ME3 made no sense. It's too big an event for one game, but it came out as it did and man, it was like fuck ME1, and fuck ME2, this is the new shit. And it really was shit.

That too. But the issue moreso than their taste in kinks is that they stopped associating Good Character with Good Plot.
The characters are already kind of good in ME1 and they're largely worthy of becoming memberberries in 2 and 3 because you're associating them with the epic B-movie plot you all partook in. I call it B-movie because the plot of 1 isn't even that good to start with, but it has enough set up and context and amazing lore behind it that it ends up feeling like a great action movie where the entire joy of the cast comes from having their comforting personalities happen adjacent to a storyline that makes you feel like a movie star in a fun action movie.

A larger problem the franchise faces going forward is that TV series are now more of a thing than movies are, and Hollywood has nuked itself. ME1 was made on top of the history of movies back when everyone took them seriously, and movies had a certain esteem about them. The best movies we have left are The Odyssey and a fucking MCU #39 film, and neither of them are very inspiring or cinematic at all.

Movies used to be more than just a cinematic spectacle too. War of the Worlds of the 50s feels like more of a commentary of where we all were at the time. Alien in the 70s is a reflection of some of the 70s feminism, and also the influences of the post-soviet era of spacefaring and so on, coupled with just being a good monster movie.

If we no longer have those sources, then Mass Effect is sourceless, and ME3 already took it down far too deep in the path of "making it more like the MCU". The fucking AI in Mass Effect Andromeda was made to look like Ultron.

>Andromeda killed the series
It did not, like one anon said few days ago Andromeda decided to do it's thing far away in a different galaxy so it's not as consequential. In essence it decided to be stupid elsewhere. As a game it was nothing special, but they failed to gain any traction because they believe ME3 Citadel interactions is what people want from the get go. And characters were mostly retarded.
If you want to look at franchise killers look at veilshit.
Series wise ME3 is tough because big bad evil was "dealt with" somehow. And they need to find a way to continue on from there.

Anyone who had expectations of BioWare in the cRPG era have an entirely different perception than mine. I played KOTOR and a bit of PS:T AFTER I played all the Mass Effects, and I still haven't played Neverwinter Nights, BG1 or 2 at all, and I'm not really a CRPG guy.

I've seen the comments over the years constantly berating BioWare for even making games with "dialogue wheels" because "It's so much worse than text that says what you're supposed to say" and all the benefits that came with making simpler and cheaper games... but none of that means much to me. Disco Elysium came out. People who aren't BioWare are making the right kinds of games. I'm a fan of the Mass Effect era of 3D RPG and I grew up on games like Half Life and Halo, and Zelda games. I don't like top down or isometric games. I played Diablo and that was just my "friends game". But Mass Effect moved the needle for me when I had played a ton of superficial action games on the early Xbox 360 era on a shitty laptop, and then had the feeling like "Damn... this is actually a revolution to me" playing Mass Effect.

I've always known there were geek-core RPG for warhammer nerds or tabletop fanatics. I could never be assed to play KOTOR as a kid because the idea of tac-pause combat was like meh to me. My first playthrough of ME1 clocked in at 18 hours with a Quick-start Male Shepard, and I fully enjoyed skipping all the content I skipped (and knowingly skipped).

And in the context of this, I don't care about what it compares to before Mass Effect -- just that ME3, as a Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 fan, was complete and utter shit to me. And I don't hate Gears of War, or mindless action games... but I think so many games have done a so much better job at telling stories or having choices than Mass Effect 3 did, and that completely disappointed me.
>>
>>746022471
I mean, it is, though. And the PR is absolutely right, because shit characters will tank your game. Look at Veilguard, Andromeda, Anthem, look at Wolverine, Fable, Concord, all these games and the criticism they got for their character design. You can't treat an RPG with shit characters as a good RPG. Even Elden Ring which has the minimum amount of character dialogue between them and the player, has memorable good designs and a couple of waifus. Not for me, I find all of the Soulslop genre to be very unsexy, but it works for some people. The point is, you can't make an RPG where you talk to nobody for 40 hours, and you can't have the people you talk to, be annoying children. And to put it simply, Bioware doesn't make soulslop, they have their own brand of games, nobody is buying soulslop from Bioware.
>>
>>746023026
Mass Effect already had episodic pacing like a tv show. The best parts were the recruitment/loyalty missions and DLCs that felt like their own mini adventures.
>>
>>746023357
Like I said, they could be making DA:O and ME2 and I'd be happy. It's OK to try new things and not make infinity engine games all the time, this isn't what this is about. I'm just saying that, as a lifelong Bioware fan, it was obvious that from DA2 and on, it was all shit. I'm not asking them to go back to something, I think ME2 had just the right type of combat for someone like me, who isn't a shooter fan, to be able to play it. ME3's gameplay, encounter design and level design was shit. It was awful. And to couple that with the game forcing you out of cover and playing on PC at higher frame rates than 60fps, which broke physics, made the game unplayable without cheats. So I might as well be playing in Narrative mode. ME3 is a really, really bad game, carried by the investment people had from previous games, and is only a success because of a tacked on MP mode which plagued later releases, especially DA:I, what the fuck even was that? And thankfully we will never see again, because EA is not letting Bioware anywhere near online play ever again. The next ME is a one and done, no DLC, no online, nothing else.
>>
>>746021724
What actual strategy? Use overload on shield, use warp on armor, hide behind cover because only 4 enemy types have any way to hurt you while you're in cover. (2 of which only show up in 4 missions)
3s enemies are more aggressive about flushing you out of cover while also having the ability to protect themselves (cannibal healing, shielding pylons, smoke grenades, marauder armoring, bullet deflection, invisibility). While the player gets more choice with abilities having expanded beyond cooldowns for resource management, increase in mobility options, and the expanded weapon system giving the player more ways to play how they like.
There's a lot of areas 2 is better than 3 (lighting, dialogue control, general writing quality, hub design) but combat is not one of them.
>>
>>746023463
Nah, Veilguard's problem is not "shit characters", it's just that its a political diatribe through characters. That to me feels like a seperate problem than the characters being bad, and if you actually play Veilguard its main story has big problems before you ever get to see Taash act as a mouthpiece for Patrick Weekes in his mentally ill personal development.
It is not "the characters" that makes Mass Effect anything special. It's the world, the dialogue wheel, and yes, combined with the characters, because the offspring of its qualities amounts to the feeling of being "inside an important-feeling, good ass sci fi movie and I'M the protagonist." more than a normal 3D Action game will, and more immersive than a simplified RPG with no voice acting would.

It isn't special because of Mordin making you go "uwu". In fact, Mordin is a shit character that gets hyperinflated because the average internetdweller is an american libtard, that BioWare entirely started listening too much towads after they launched Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

I love these games, and I don't even give a shit about "Tali" and I was surprised to learn that she's this hyper favorite character on the internet.
>>
>>746023602
I completely agree with this. Which kinda defeats my point, but overall 2 is still following the superstructure of a heist film like Ocean's Eleven (or twelve kek) and ultimately the episodic thing is more of teething matter. And LOST was at the height of its popularity when they were sketching out the game. Also why Jacob's Loyalty Mission is entirely LOST and why the game copies the theme of "Daddy Issues". I liked all of it though, but the main plot with the collectors, the inside of the base, the Collector Assault and the Derelict Reaper is very very 80s/90s sci fi MOVIES for the most part. Lots of Event Horizon, Alien, even a bit of Sunshine with the whole Sun motif in TIM's office and so on.
>>
>>746023463
Thing with Citadel was that it's in contrast to 95% of other content in trilogy. You are already familiar with characters where they "acted appropriately" to the tone and setting. Problem is when they saw the reception they said "lets have characters act throughout the entire Andromeda game like it's a citadel dlc".

I don't even know why everyone pisses their pants over 3. The gameplay is far and away better than the first 2, the set pieces are good, and everything more or less gets resolved one way or another. The only thing that didn't need to be there was Kai Leng.

Then the reason Andromeda got made was because ME3 already killed the series, retard. They needed to make a retard-game just to make another Mass Effect game, and had ME3 been good, they would've tastefully left it and never made another game, because everyone would be staunch defenders that the trilogy was the Lord of the Rings of gaming and diluting it wasn't necessary.

But that's not what happened, was it?
>>
>>746024053
>>Nah, Veilguard's problem is not "shit characters"
I mean, you say that, but the character reveal trailer it debuted with showed some of the most Concordian designs we've ever seen and that tanked the game instantly, before anyone got to play a demo or anything. Did the game have glaring issues other than the squadmates? I never said otherwise, but to pretend that the character reveal wasn't catastrophic is just denial at this point.
>>
>>746024531
None of this makes any sense
>>
You can mod a lot of stupid shit out of 3, most notably the ending. Since both me1 and 3 have better gameplay than 2, this is a massive boost when ranking.
>>
>>746024502
The combat is more "slick" but not necessarily more fun than 2, and 1 is a YMMV thing.
But if you solely determine "gameplay" as the part where you have the gun out and shoot at enemies then sure... but the rest of us define gameplay also as the interplay between making decisions on the wheel, running around BETWEEN missions and interacting with the story, alongside the combat.

And in that sense ME3 is quickly the weakest link, because it downgraded everything that wasn't the skill tree menu or the shooting. If ME3 had the same dialogue design as 2, and 4 hub locations with an even mixture of low-grade mini-quests and actual side-quests, and more non-linearity to the main plot on the Galaxy map like 1 and 2 had, then 3 would've been contender as the best game in the series, but it doesn't do those things. Everything is only narrower and more streamlined, and dumbed down in 3, except for the specific action of sprinting, taking cover or shooting the enemies. There's more to the "gameplay" of Mass Effect than that.
>>
Pressly losing his racism is the greatest arc in the whole series
>>
>>746022107
I was jarred by the differences in ME2 after finishing ME1 at first, but I feel like it was largely able to make up for it. Was it perfect? No, but it was the most fleshed out game in the series and was able to strike a decent balance between gameplay and writing.
>t. played the entire trilogy chronologically after it was finished
>>
>>746024746
You're expecting way too much. It's a story that takes place during the literal apocalypse, there's no room for drastic choices.
>>
>>746024242
The difference with Citadel is that it has characters you are familiar with and are fond of, and they have earned that light-heartedness from you. You are right that you absolutely cannot treat new characters the same way, as they've not earned any of that. But even in Inquisition which wasn't full on Citadel DLC, at least not from the start, none of these characters stuck. The tumblrinas may have made copious amounts of shit art of their elf whore, but that didn't mean excitement or cultural footprint for the IP. Inquisition killed DA and the awful squadmates was part of it. Again, not the only thing, but we had so many threads shitting on them back in the day. I only liked, uh ... shit. Blackwatch. Uh, buh, Blackbeard. Beardshield. Beardtower. Beardwall. Blackwall, that's his fucking name. Everything else about this game was shit.
>but the lore
Lore doesn't make up for shit characters, plot, dialogue, gameplay, music, level design, encounter design, just everything.
>>
>>746024978
Then that is a fundamental narrative approach issue, which instantly downgrades your game from a 9 to a 6.
>>
>>746024584
Yes, for sure, characters and marketing obviously matters, and you also can't determine if a storydriven game even has a good plot from its marketing. But what I'm getting at is that it ultimately is not just the quality of a cast of characters and their vibes that determines if a game is perceived to be of high quality or not. Mass Effect could've also had 6 billion players and a non-existent Main Story but Overwatch type characters and i would still disagree with your premise, because I'm talking about the quality as a franchise that's known for story. Within that context, you need more than just flavorfully cuddly characters to succeed. You need the characters to exist within something that the story-interested player is willing to go along with, like a solid plot with intelligent backstory, and something to intrigue you, and then once you have those "movieisms" down, it certainly becomes the quality of flavor-writing for each character in the story that people latch on to and it seems like that's the reason everyone loves it.

For example Xenoblade Chronicles 2, ended up being something I enjoyed a lot. It doesn't have a GREAT plot, but it tries and it tries. And ultiamtely it has 10 chapters where it manages to feel like something monumental by the end, but all I can think about are the characters. But I would've dropped the game 50 hours before it ended if I had felt like the plot wasn't there, and all I had to go on was the welsh catgirl being cute. I ended up loving the characters, because they're along with me during what felt like a "quality adventure". Same reason I did not like Xenoblade X, and same reason I don't bother with the Dragon Quest series. Those to me feel like games where there is a plot... but it really doesn't fucking matter and it's hardly actually trying because the "point" is just the characters and the RPGness of it. But story-first games need to nail the story, before it can nail the characters, or people won't revere it.

I don't mind the Inquisition party. My biggest gripe with the game is the pseudo open world with a gazillion fetch quests, it was awful design and I can't believe they did it again with Andromeda.
>>
>>746024978
Nothing stopped the designers of ME3 from setting up a plot like ME2 which ironically ran more on a "time's running out" system than ME3 does.

in 3 I can always do 100% of the side-content before the next primary plot point, and the game never jumps ahead before I'm ready. In 2 there is a counter that represents the Collectors abducting humans and Cerberus trying to locate them that often ends up tripping up your own planning because you wanted to get enough Loyalty Missions done but just had to take on a side-quest that wasn't necessary to tempt fate.

So no. ME3 could've had usefully non-linear main plotting on the map. The only reason it doesn't is because they decided to make a more linear game.
>>
>>746025238
Inquisition was a sign of hope after ME3. It wasn't rushed in the same manner. It had a 4 year dev cycle and David Gaider's writing is closer to Drew Karpyshyn's than Mac Walters's so there were signs of promise in aspects of the story, and yeah, if you put it on Casual Difficulty and skip 80% of the fetch quest worlds, there's a nifty 40 hour single player campaign in there that's actually halfway decent. Unfortunately the reality of the game was not a recovery. It was just the DA Team running out of steam slightly delayed from the Mass Effect team.
>>
>>746024635
It makes perfect sense, though.
Because while the IP still had some staying power, ME3 killed the Milky Way and any continuity. It was also increasingly apparent that, with ME3 poisoning everything that came before, a prequel is just not viable. Anyone asking for a first contact war game or an Anderson game, is asking for a game that sells 500k. That's your audience. Also, because Bioware is retarded and insisted that the endings were final, definitive, and their "artistic integrity", they could not make a came that didn't treat them as gospel. Meanwhile what the entire fanbase wanted, was a game that did not treat the endings as gospel. And those two things clashes into making an entirely disconnected, disjointed game called Andromeda that asked you to care, because it had some skinsuits called Turian, Salarian, Asari and Krogan. Patently, sticking Mass Effect on the cover, does not automatically sell your game, and the next game can't be "let's repeat the exact same fresh start thing we've been doing since DA2 that fails worse each time". But they're gonna do it anyway.
>>
>>746021080
>The problem then is that 3 largely pretends ME2 didn't happen
Because 90% of ME2 largely can be ignored because it was pointless and had nothing to do with anything for the Reaper plot. What is the entire consequence of all of ME2? The Reaper base. That is it. That is the single matter of significance to the larger plot of the Reapers that happens in the entire game. The Collectors? Irrelevant at the end. Reapers are onions green? Irrelevant to the overall conflict. The new team members? Irrelevant, just like what happened to the original team members from ME1.

ME3 ignored so much of what ME2 did because so much of what ME2 did didn't actually matter. It was the gaming trilogy equivalent of a bottle episode.

ME had continuity between the trilogy games, DA didn't have that benefit but this was a decision made by DA team directly. They constantly tried to move away from Origins, none of it worked and they got salty because of their failures. Andromeda in ME is arguably 2nd ME game and can be compared to DA2 if that makes sense to you.
>>
>>746025648
That's funny considering that out of all the 3, I've always considered 2 to be the best overall designed product, even I concede the story isn't good for a 2nd middle trilogy act, and that 3 made combat more refined looking.

2 by far has the best and most disciplined design with the most consistency of all the 3 games. It has a high baseline for interactive cinematics and cinematography. It has an even amount of combat and exploration and conversation, and it has lots of player agency, lots of player decisions to make, and the shooting is more solid on its own than it was in ME1.

But because it removes the inventory screen and has a Human Reaper at the end people think it's the worst thing ever made.

>But what I'm getting at is that it ultimately is not just the quality of a cast of characters and their vibes that determines if a game is perceived to be of high quality or not
It took 6 seconds for the Highguard trailer to kill all interest in the game. It is clearly a choke point. It has to do so much more, that much harder, to change the perception later, and in today's world, you don't get that chance. Can it have other choke points as well, after that? Absolutely.

i get what you mean but i'd argue andromeda killed the series outside of the game world. now every time people talk about the future of the series someone will derail it with andromeda and for good reason. while it was mostly it's own thing, it still had mass effect plastered all over it. also it was a bioware game and they planned it to be the continuation to the main series. just because it failed right at the start, doesn't mean it's not relevant to the main series. because it sadly is and you can see it's influence (at least in the art direction) for the next game, see pic
>>
>>746025990
I guess I'm talking more about word of mouth and lasting appeal than marketing.

Obviously marketing has to make the game look good, and if your approach is "fortnite" in a series that was supposed to be story, you'll lose the audience that cares and you'll filter people who don't wanna go away from Fortnite.

It's more about, once you have a solid baseline for marketing and you have audience capture as a "game that has story, and good characters" you can't rightly tell me that just having a likeable cast is enough for people to remain attached to your series if the rest is rudderless, and that's my criticism of BioWare, because they believe that they can fart away the main plot as long as the characters are cute and cuddly, and that clearly hasn't worked for them since Andromeda.
>>
>>746025238
I think they were awful and, as established, lacked any cultural footprint to carry the IP forward. Varric, Solas and Harding all failed to carry the legacy pillars the IP required, as their presence did nothing to mitigate the reception of the new cast. In fact, no amount of returning DA characters could save them from the fact that players would be saddled with Rook and the new cast. What's worse, this "new cast each game" approach has likely been so poisoned by Veilguard that the moment the next Bioware game shows new faces, it's going to take a Highguard like 6-second presentation to kill the game, before anyone took their wallet out of their pocket.
>>
>>746025594
why did it suck then?
>>
>>746025726
It does, but I am missing the point of it. If the point is that all ME has, is the trilogy cast, I do agree. But that's not what Bioware has hinted at doing so far. Except Liara, of course, can't leave her out.
>>
>>746026056
That's true, but those people are faggots, who don't understand why the negativity surrounding the brand started long before this game even came out, and cemented itself primarily with Mass Effect 3.

They had something to prove with MEA and they didn't because it was another failure and htis time it also looked outright incompetent from a dev standpoint. But a lot of the festering negativity that immediately attacked it, same as with Veilguard, are old pissy people like me who have a bone to pick with BioWare over other stuff because of much more important failures they made before.

I believe MEA is a superficial failure. Its own plot has eye-rolling moments but I can accept it at the end of the day as a slightly mediocre plot outside the trilogy because some of its sci fi ideas were actually decent, and characters are not really that bad once you settle in. And it fulfils its own agenda quite nicely with the final level and I love how they did Epilogue in this game.

Most aren't like that. They don't play the game, because it looks bad, but that's 1 game release away from proving it wrong, and the same audience won't care because it's not the inner failures that are keeping them from the franchise, just it not looking like a good AAA production. The same audience will accept utter slop as long as it looks like a pristine masterpiece, even if the story within it is twice as bullshit as the Catalyst scene at the end of Mass Effect 3. And I'm saying, that is what REALLY matters to the overall hearesay of the franchise. More people might've actually convinced themselves to play this game anyway if there wasn't a sea of disgruntled Mass Effect 3 haters, which was clearly not a bad game because it's a bad "game" but because the storytelling failed.

You know, that's GotG territory, and it may be fitting, seeing as how Mary DeMarle worked on that game. GotG, you wouldn't know it, but it sold 8 million copies by the end of its first or second year, after a disastrous launch. At $5 a pop. It doesn't matter, because, by that time, not only you made a grand total of $40m US in gross, against a budget of likely $150m US, but also because your studio closed down in the first three months from launch.

Shitposting at work so I can't write a lot. Not exactly. ME was able to sustain itself because first 3 games can be seen as a single game, and the first next one is Andromeda.
Andromeda was a break from that formula and because they executed it poorly (mainly characters atmosphere which was based on Citadel template).
In DA every game is 95% independent from itself. But instead of also altering characters, it is altering the world, appearance, tone, in essence they're nonstop trying to move away from Origins which everyone loved.
For next ME at the moment we don't know enough on what they had planed. What's good is that from a business point of view veilshit type of tone/setting is seen as non-viable, but until we get any updates we can only guess.

While I do agree that there is a large Bioware fanbase that will poison any new release ... so what? That is a self-imposed issue that Bioware created. If they hadn't poisoned their customer base so much, they would be in a better position, even with the shitty games they released afterward, because there simply wouldn't be so much negativity toward them. But that isn't the reality of the situation. Either Bioware do something about it, or go to work for nobodies that get their studios shut down, after producing nothing in half a decade+ like Casy Hudson.

>>
>>746026932
I thin the reason why we don't know, is because the game stalled and either market performance of various games made them change direction from what they had started to make in 2019-20, or post Veilguard reception made them pivot or restart production from scratch. Otherwise, pre-production from 2019-2023 and from 2025-27 would mean that full production would have started, which it hasn't. Historically, Bioware announces when a game has entered full production. Full development, which Mike Gamble has said, is not the same thing, it just means that the studio is not working on other projects and has poured all resources onto it.

I think you're right on point with this and that veilshit was a turning point. Before veilshit we already had large market shift but people in studio could offset it by going wiht "but our audience absolutely loves this, you gotta believe us, those games failing won't happen to us!". But after it there's no business sense to do the same thing.

Are you saying it will only be true for TV shows and not games? He makes no such distinction. Shepard's story is OUR story, and a story where Shepard isn't OURS, breaks that verbal contract. Even then, nobody wants to play someone that isn't Shepard, and it is impossible to make a Shepard that accounts for all backgrounds, personality variations and doing it again for female, and not have that character be the protagonist, or adding a protagonist cost on top of all that production value sunk in.
>>
>>746029215
The problem is that Femshep inflated the idea that Shepard is this "Great character". Shepard is and always was a Mary Sue character, but because Femshep got to be a strong female protagonist without overt attention placed on her gender role, everyone thinks Shepard is now a special character, but for males it's literally the most stock, typical, and completely fine main character archetype repeated, and bland enough that we can project ourselves onto him.

That's why they now think they have to put Shepard into a TV show.
>>
>>746029215
>Beyond the next game, there’s more to get excited about. I haven’t talked about it much, but you might have heard a little something about a TV series? We’ve been partnering closely with Amazon on it, and we’re really excited with what the talented team over there is coming up with. The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game. The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story – because after all … that’s YOUR story, isn’t it?
He is talking about the show.
>>
>>746029450
>Making any statement about Shepard is not indicative of how the studio approaches Shepard in regards to the audience, and is invalidated on a per game basis
Is this your argument, then?

>>746029379
The point of Shepard was never Shepard himself. Shepard is the vehicle by which the player establishes bonds and relationships with the characters and the world. The crew without Shepard works no better than Shepard without the crew. And if you lose either, or both, for another attempt at "fresh start" after what "fresh start" got you with Veilguard, you gotta really want to shut Bioware down.

Following things are canonized
>high ems destroy
>genophage cure
>geth-quarian peace
>miranda survived to earth
Plot: The survivors of the battle for earth are rebuilding the citadel and relay in sol. Miranda uses her knowledge of the lazarus project to uncripple shepard.
Most fleets tried to use non-relay ftl to go to their homeworlds.
Shepard is called in to try and keep the peace between the emerging factions/polities.
Turian military leader who's been the defacto peace keeper but has been growing more brutal as the months have dragged on.
Would be Krogan Warlord gathering more unruly types under his banner.
Salarian and Asari council remnant pretending the power structure is the same.
Terra Firma guy stoking anti-alien sentiment due to resource shortages.
Admiral Xen being a shifty bitch because civilian fleet labor is the primary driver of repairs.
Big intrigue plot and you find that someone is working to put the factions against each other. Asari/Salarian mossad style thing, in service of the old power structure behind it all.
Squadmates are:
Miranda
Jack
The batarian from the clinic level you give the medi-gel. (He's become a Shepard cultist)
Salarain STG (mossad agent, long loyalty quest chain that ends with her betraying mossad or you)
Geth that got rebuilt by quarians (had some geth ai behind emp proof shields or whatever)
Half way through the game Normandy shows back up bringing back the following squadmates:
Liara
Tali
Garrus
Vega
Gotta retake Luna base from Krogan warlord to find the necessary code to revive edi (she goes back to being a hologram, but she makes it sexy for Joker)

Obviously, Terra Firma thing, kinda obvious. Miranda putting Shepard together again, definitely. Able to pick up past romances, if Samara, Miranda or Jack were romanced, whatever little Samara romance there was at least. The main backdrop is Terra Firma vs Alliance. Alliance has a lot of bad rep right now with blowing up the relays and Earth being kinda fucked, so they need Shepard to rally behind as an icon, more than an actual soldier, but Alliance military also needs his ass in the front lines. Combat is slower and more strategic, because while rebuilt, Shepard isn't fully recovered yet, a lot of things don't work like before. Emphasis on squad tactics and abilities. For those that can't play that way, there's easy mode.
Instead of Krogan in the moon, I had mercs squatting on the Citadel, looting and stealing
The Turians would be on the verge of starvation from having spent most of their rations, and you would be given a chance to allow/help them raid the flotilla for food, stop them and have them starve to death, raid the Citadel for Dextro provisions, or disguise as Terra Firma and raid the Citadel, while also stealing dextro provisions. If the Quarians did not survive Rannoch, the Turians do not plan to stage an attack on the Flotilla, bur rather are prepared to starve to death.
If Geth survived Rannoch but died in the Destroy ending, Geth units that were out of the range of the beam show up and try to restore the geth platforms. If both Geth and Quarians survived Rannoch, they work together in restoring the mobile platforms.
When raiding the Citadel, you come across some body horror elements, but with no clear culprit.
Also, the Leviathan artifacts are missing. As are the teams that planted them.

Also, yes, there is civil unrest among the Krogan. Now that the Genophage is cured, Wrex' hold on the Krogan is lost, so other factions are vying for control. You can help Wrex, you can help Wrex and fail, thus trying to unite clan Urdnot under Grunt, or support someone else entirely.
Every faction you help, can be recruited in your battle against Terra Firma.
If you convince the Mercs that Terra Firma attacked the Citadel, the Mercs will fight Terra Firma independently. If the Mercs find out it was Alliance under disguise, they think it is done in order to get them to fight Terra Firma for them, which makes Mercs go rogue and attack humans indiscriminately. This compounds ill will toward the Alliance.
If you do things right, Alliance fights back against Terra Firma, if not Terra Firma solidifies control over Earth.
However, there is suspicious activity on Mars and what seems to be some faction making a sort of Reaper graveyard there.
You are sent to investigate, only to find a semi-functional Harbinger. You are almost wiped out until the Normandy shows up and allows you to withdraw safely.
You stage a counter attack, destroy Harbinger for good, find a Leviathan artifact, and a team that had been assigned to it being mind controlled. The Cipher allows Shepard to resist is control after, maybe, having to fight off some of his own squad.
With the defeat of the forces on Mars and the Normandy available, you can visit other system in the local cluster and do other quests there, for post ending gameplay. You can also rekindle your romance with whoever is on the Normandy.

I like that the Citadel is bigger in 3 but what good is it when literally most of it is just background slop. At least Zakera Ward was a destination for a handful of Loyalty missions and a couple of legitimate side-quests where you actually have a questgiver and have to run around and pick some dialogue options. ME3 has that one quest with Aria, and even then that eventually forces you to quit the area to go scan planets for War Assets before going back.

And every other cutsceney quest in 3 is open and shut in design. Once you've opened it you can't say no to it, and once you follow it, it leads directly to another cutscene room where you get 1 dialogue wheel that resolves the quest no matter what, but if you select the Red/Blue persuade options it gives you better results.

I just hate how they designed 3. It feels like really early Gacha design patterns to me.

I disagree. Though techno-babble, Bioware did a plausible enough job to justify it. In fact, we are on-route to have similar tech to that in a few to several decades from now, but within the 21st century. We will have cellular regeneration and postmortem resuscitation within range of our lifetime, or shortly after. Meanwhile, Leia freezes to death in outer space and supermans her way back into the ship, which, even accounting for the force, that's not how things work.

It is used for many reasons, including the fact to show you that even Shepard can die, which instantly raises the stakes, gives room for the story to introduce new cast, with plausible explanation, change the way weapons work etc. If you like none of these things, then you don't, but that's a you issue at this point. >>746038167
His death doesn't make much sense but I think it was one of a handful of more mindfucky sci fi elements in the story that could've gone somewhere cool. I see the ME2 version of Cerberus as a demonstration of "public vs private" in the future when there's a much wider universe of exploitation and hedgefunding and tax evasion style stuff. In our world, a lot of corrupt or cheaty shit happens when really rich people go through Russia. Elon Musk got so much done for SpaceX because he went to Russia and got deals made for rocket parts outside of anything juristidcted by the EU or US. The idea that if you spend enough fucking cash in Mass Effect, and concentrate a science project across a dozen star systems worth of equity funds and so on, that you can genuinely revive someone is kinda interesting. Of course braindead is braindead and they should've had more than a handwave explanation done for how exactly Shepard's "identity" is remade or retained after burning up in the atmosphere of a fucking planet lmao, but they could've done something.

The Mass Relays and Biotics are also kind of nonsense, and it's just a handful of things I'm willing to go with, without a clear explanation because everything else feels very detailed, and ultiamtely I prefer when a setting even as detailed as Mass Effect has a few things that seem almost mystical to it. I think they overall did a great job of balancing the unexplainable phenomenon with the explainable, and Cerberus's mysterious origins are also enough that it convinced me that there's something they've been able to do that we just can't trace back that somehow makes sense, because the galaxy is enormous and the possibilities of both science and money blows the mind if someone really develops it without regulations, and I'd have a problem if they just revived randoms, but they make it abundantly clear that Shepard was THE project.

Also, there was always the possibility that the Reapers are behind it.

most of the mod happens in a different branch depending on a few choices in the previous games, and if you've triggered the new content it'll actually remove a lot of Javik content, because I'm entirely changing his role and making him mandatory in the alternate timeline, but I'm making him not a squad-mate because of this, and he'll be unavailable for larger stretches of time.

He'll have a bunch more dialogue wheels added if you play regularly, but of all ME3 characters he's the one with the fewest officially cut lines of dialogue, because they really got the time to polish his DLC. The main game is chok full of outdated lines from earlier scripts and a lot of it is voiced. There's even one where Udina talks about Cerberus being allies of the Reapers, which was their original plot before the whole "Control" stuff.

So I do like some of it, the moral conundrum of a false flag and the dextro rations is very cool stuff.
I don't like Harbinger being alive, though I considered having the Leviathan being an enemy in mine (controlling mossad group), but ultimately don't think we need mind control as an excuse for why the races are at each others throats.
I love the idea of post game being the local cluster, setting up for the sequel.
My idea would be finding that the pulse grew less damaging as it traveled leading to functional relays farther from earth, (but still killed the reapers) so outlying systems are rising politically sincs the galaxy is missing its head until the citadel is fixed.
>>
>>746047876
you are besties
>>
>>746048349
The point is that the Leviathans are trying to fuck with people, so that they can grow in numbers and power, while the rest of the Milky Way is plunged in anarchy, and that works especially well if they can do that while the galaxy's military force is occupied, or stalled, in our Solar System. It allows them to do other things elsewhere. Obviously, Earth has no idea what goes on outside of our system, due to Relay collapse, but that is a perspective that the Normandy might have, during its trip back.
Obviously, as well, it's not Harbinger, but rather its repaired husk that isn't nearly as strong as Harbinger, if the Normandy by itself can fend Harbinger off. Still, if you're a couple of teams with shotguns and/or tomkahs, you're not going to have a nice day against it. It finally allows you to have that fight with Harbinger that, under other circumstances, you could not have.
>>
>>746048349
AFAIK not all relays are active and lay dormant. First contact war started because humans were activating relays left and right without mapping them out. You could also say only primary relays were affected and most secondary ones are working normally.

I think Indoctrination was an important concept in the series, because it has to do with free will vs control and that has something to do with the fact that there's so much emphasis on "choice" and the topic of synthetics as living beings, to demonstrate that we're actually enslaving them ourselves, and we also kind of enslave the Krogan to not having freedom of choice when we decide they can't give birth at their native ratio. There's a meta-story about the player making choices, and seeking the "freedom" from Reapers, while reminding us that we're kinda also doing things we blame the Reapers for, not with "mind" control, but kinda. The Geth Rewrite control is aptly compared to Reaper indoctrination, and Legion's acquisition level is inside of a Reaper full of examples of mind control.
>I love the idea of post game being the local cluster, setting up for the sequel.
I've always wanted
Perfect scenario for me is ME5 is a "big" game with tons of new ideas, but in the interim EA/BioWare release a 2-hour game experience taking place in a small experimental play space, either as VR title or a First Person "Playable Teaser" thing, to demonstrate early showings of new tech for the 5th game and to give us something to do while we wait.

Just anything so it isn't 6 fucking years and still waiting.

Bioware really had issues with justifying why the fuck all those characters stick with you until the end. Often they even ignored explaining it at all. It's a big issue in Mass Effect and Kotor especially

If the game came out of pre-production tomorrow, it would still need until late 2029 to release. So likely, this is a game that won't release before 2030 and, considering the current situation, we might even be looking at a more 2031 release, because even if the game came out of pre-production in 2027, the idea that everything would go smoothly and there'd be no setbacks or delays is just high fantasy at this point. But, depending on the RAM-pocalypse, artificial inflation, corporate feudalism, no right-to-repair, we could be looking at a population that is ~50% locked out of tech by 2029, leading into a societal collapse. Speculation for everyone!
This game is never coming out.

I accurately called when Veilguard entered production and it came out exactly 2 years after that point, so if it's in production now, it'll come out in 2028 most likely, maybe early 2029 yeah.

I wonder if Casey Hudson is trying to pull something with KOTOR3. Like, maybe they're still talking together and either the fired ME5 team go to his new studio when EA deal goes through, or the KOTOR3 project is a ruse so Casey can do stack development unaffected by EA idiocy, and they merge that into ME5.

I definitely think some of the former and ex BioWare staffers are talking regardless of EA still being in control of BioWare. I remember Gamble tweeting at Casey when he left that he was still gonna show him dev progress on ME5 as the project went. Casey might be like "Nah fuck that" but I think he's actually slightly involved. Mac didn't want fuck all to do with it, but that's not a bad thing. More likely scenario is that Casey Hudson is strategically placing the KOTOR 3 project so he has 1-2 years to react to how Exodus, Expanse and ME5 were received and make his game the true showpiece.

I'm just kind of excited that there's 4 BioWare style sci fi games getting made, even if none of them reach ME1/2 levels of quality.

They do an okay job of it in all the Mass Effect games IMO. The larger issue is that they don't always effectively use the Companion structure to tell a good story through companions. 2 got the closest to this, but got flack for what a "side-quest" it is. But it had the right idea that since you're gonna be having these characters be so central the game-story, and so many cutscenes, you had better make them a central aspect of the main story. But there's so many ways you can do an even better job at this. instead of each ME2 character just being a vignette with their own personal "episode", you should have 1 interwoven plot that's related to all the characters. Something they did in the past, or something they're planning to do, some seperately, some together, in the present... like, Zero Escape is a brilliant example where there's a cast of characters who really form the entire plot who are there the entire time, but kept things hidden from each other.

And movies like The Usual Suspects. A game could be made like this where all the companions have a bit more to do with the central plot, and each of them also has a reason why they need to tag along with the protagonist to get involved, and each has a "Wrex" moment in the plot where they take a stand, or do a betrayal, and maybe 2 of them have history that needs to unravel, and at least 1 of them has to confront the protagonist in the final level almost like a villain.

Because if you nailed that you'd have something that's both a good sci-fi plot that goes somewhere cool, but also have a perfect justification for why we always have to be around these "characters".

This is why Liara is the best Mass Effect character btw and I'm tired of pretending otherwise, despite all of the endless screeching about being the writers pet from armchair critics

Not only does she actually go and add value to the galaxy on her own time in order to be an equal player to Shepard and develop her own character and motivations, but she is also the only one with a truly tangible reason to stick by Shepards side so closely through everything that happens. He is imprinted on her, they've embraced eternity together and swam in the sea of euphoria, she was his closest confidant in the fight with Saren and gives the most insight to him as well as the most attention for his mental state. She's the only one who truly asks him how he's doing and she's the only one he truly confides in. He took her virginity, they killed her indoctrinated mother together, she fell deeply in love with him and is directly responsible for hunting his body down after he was killed in order to get him to the people who worked to revive him.

The one true ride or die and Shepards other half, no other squadmate even compares whatsoever. Shove your Tali and Garrus

There's nothing wrong with Liara imo, other than being treated like the mainest of main characters but then not really having enough plot relevance and not enough romance specific interactions in 3.

In fact, one of the things I'm doing in my mod for ME3 is I'm adding additional cues, like in her early conversation where she and Shepard can momentarily feel the buzz of horniness and interrupt the rest of the conversation with a spur-of-the-moment sex scene where they lock the door and make babies together.

The series was killed by EA and Bioware. They failed to realize they had in their hands a money printer like Skyrim that needed spinoffs centered in the Milky Way, its species and characters. Instead the series went silent for years to bring us Andromeda in the end.
As far as the OG trilogy is concerned, it took the wrong direction (both story and gameplay-wise) with ME2 but 3 at least managed to deliver the best gameplay.

>Not t.a
Better design IMO. hard to explain simply but ME2 has the most constent volume of quality in the series.
ME1 really impresses in the first hour on the Normandy, the first mission, the Citadel as you imagine the rest of the game being an ever-continuing stream of "that", and then you get to your first 2 UNC planets and realize that's why the game seemed too good to be true.
ME3 is a game that immediately feels overly normalized, feeling a lot closer to other AAA games on the market and downplaying its own Mass Effect isms for "scripted set-piece" Call of Duty/Uncharted moments that contain awkward choreography, limited choice interactions that undermines the sense of "lots of things could be happening that you're not seeing in YOUR play through". And then you get to the Citadel and Normandy and realize they've taken the ME2 DLC approach to everything for the full game, where characters just make small commentaries instead of being fully interactive.

ME2 on the other hand starts with many cutscenes and much gameplay. It's generic than 1, that is true. But it starts with many choices and cutscenes, and levels and shooting that look pretty distinct. And it STAYS that way for its entire run-time. Any mission you take has its own environment that's in balance between Conversation sequences AND Combat, and while exploration isn't as strong as before, at least every mission has a few side-rooms and extra characters to talk to for some roleplay moments. And they never "run out of budget" unlike the UNCs in 1 or the ambient design of ME3. You consistently get fully animated scenes with other characters both in the hub areas and during the missions, and they never betray the hidden contract between the written protagonist and the player being the protagonist, unlike in 3 where Shepard starts talking way too much without the player's control.

It's somewhere within this that 2 zones you in better than the other 2 games did.

>When questioned by Lieutenant Vega, Treeya relates her respect for Liara, but explains that since her mission with Commander Shepard, Liara's beliefs about the Reapers border on obsession, to the detriment of her academic career and reputation. To the public at large, there's still no concrete evidence the Reapers exist.
Shepard turned his wife into a completely different person, he broke her down and reformed her in his own image. He was the first human Spectre and the first Reaper-killer, they walked on Ilos together and touched the ancient world that she so desperately sought to understand. And when he was killed by the Reapers she worked tirelessly to save his life and then become the first humanitarian Shadow Broker all in order to carry on his personal mission to stop the Reapers.

Best girl.

Is there any reason to use any regular weapon other than the Mattock as a Soldier in 2? It's accurate enough at range that sniper rifles don't really feel useful. You can take a Scion down in one Adrenaline Rush volley on normal with the right setup with it.
>>
>>746053157
Both 2 and 3 chase "cancerous design choices" but 2 married them much better with the sauce that defined Mass Effect than 3 does.
3 is just the combat element of the franchise coupled with gears of war to completion. ME2 is gears of war "isms" coupled with the same dialogue choice and volume of interactive cinematic content, interesting world locations that you get to not just walk around and see, but talk to NPCs even if they don't have an immediate side-quest, and then it also has a very unique game-plot structure on top of it. I think ME3 feels way more "action level to action level" than 2 does, in a bad way, and it's because 2 has us pick between an out-of-order sequence of main-plot related missions like the first game, and then after a set number the next central plot mission is introduced, and that builds up to this Suicide Mission concept that tops off the whole "Cinematic Space Opera" experience with a level where choices matter and the companions are the centerpiece, while the combat is played to its strengths too, and the whole universe and cinematic element soars too.

ME1 has a fantastic endgame as well, but the cinematics and combat and environments are not consistently great, and at times the game just feels like it's full of afterthoughts. And ME3 is unimpressive because they trimmed away too much of the core pillairs of the series that isn't combat-related, to the point where it just becomes a AAA-generic rollercoaster where all I do is run forward through self-playing dialogue and shooting until I reach the goal, but I don't feel like I'm actually Shepard in that moment. I'm just "playing through a game level" like when I'm playing Call of Duty or Uncharted, and this makes the game experience less unique and worse to me.

"Fine" is not the same as "one of the best games ever made, and terrific third game in a trilogy"
It's worse than the first two games, even with all of its betterments of DLC and even most mods. ME3 fundamentally has an inferior design structure to it than before. The quest log barely being a quest log is just one issue. But it's fully of dumbed down design patterns and things that are just less interactive, and a plot-driven story with a terrible plot.

Shepard changed her mentality permanently. She killed countless Geth, biotic cultists, spacers, pirates and Rachni. She will easily and repeatedly give Renegade dialogue at the end of ME1 recommending you sacrifice the Council. She will jump down and double tap Saren to make sure he's dead. She becomes ruthless, and it all happens on screen in front of your eyes. You clearly know absolutely nothing about the character whatsoever if you only define her as "dorky" simply because she's young. She's a pragmatist, a killer, she's a strategist, a confidant to an Alliance military commander in a war against the Reapers, she's a naturally gifted and extremely powerful biotic sorceress, and is easily the smartest and most naturally gifted crewmate in the entire series.

Why the fuck should it take an asari 100 years to make a big life change just because their lifespan should be proportional to a human teenager? She clearly experiences life in an overall same level of experience but has a slower hormonal development and degradation, so she's just a teenager with 10 times as much time to experience and making changes, so she's done it many times before.

She was actually a design architect 10 years prior to deciding to become a prothean recluse nerd. And before that she was a fashion model. All just within a few years because she's had such a long life already and gets fed up with things quickly.

I don't care about Thermal Clips because I didn't have any attachment to its Covenant Recharge shit before then.
My personal peeve is that people are way too busy talking about how 2 "casualized" the series when 3 does that twice as hard. 3 is the game where it just stops feeling like a "questy/choicy" game, and just became a straight up action slop with background banter and choices for toddlers like every other game. Besides Cure/Sabotage the Genophage what choices do we make in 3 that are memorable? I think 2 does a way better job of immersing the player into roleplaying the character, and offering way more fun opportunities to make different decisions throughout. But maybe that's just the type of player I am. What I enjoy far most in all 3 games is the dialogue wheel itself, not being yet another video game series where I pull out weapons and shoot stuff. For me the shooting is always just "video game stuff" that I have to do between the interesting parts, and neither of the 3 games really did anything special with gameplay at any point.

She became a hardened killer during the events of Mass Effect 1. Bore witness to the visions of the beacon, became obsessed with the Reapers and dedicated her life to stopping that threat. Her mission and Shepards mission are one in the same. Neither character is more unrealistic than the other. Shepard literally is revived from beyond the grave. And Liara was already a biotic specialist. Hardened by an Asari Matriarch. She was already willing to fight and kill her mother. She didn't need convincing. She was always a formidable foe. Did you not see the fuckhuge energy prison that they had her locked up in? The events of 1 absolutely changed her personality. She became obsessed with the Reapers.

Did you play the game?

Because ME3 is literal slop, but ME2 is slop that still has a trace of that true sauce that started the series. I think this is because much of 2's writing, fragmented as it may be, was done by the writers of the first game in a period of its development where the game still looked a lot like a true ME1 sequel. You can see this in much of the early footage. It haf the same HUD and shield system as 1, and they had plans to keep making UNCs. I sometimes think the main plot is literally another Veilguard moment where they kept rethinking it enough times until shit hit the fan and someone had to make the hard call to say that because we can't figure out something deeper we're doing the straightforward thing and making the Suicide Mission concept.

But ultimately a lot of 2 feels like it's still fleshing out things that were unexamined in the first game, even if it could've been a much bigger and deeper sequel. But I can't appreciate 3 at all because it just feels way too spiritually different to me, and as if it's pretending there is a story where there actually isn't one. 2 is full of little moments that adds to the legacy of ME1 to me. ME3 never feels that way to me.
>>
I don't understand why anyone would shitpost that Liara isn't just as hardened as every other squadmate. She's on the same squad. She has extremely powerful abilities. Where exactly is this idea coming from that she's a timid mouse?

She already fucking was, did you even play the game? And she had to put down her mother because of circumstance, and ahe wasn't close to her. And then after that you can have a conversation where she spaghettis on shepard about wanting to make him a test subject.

And what does her speaking voice or conversation style (around Shepard who she has the hots for) have to do with how she operates in the field? I think you might need to actually PLAY the game with her in your squad for once (instead of Tali?) and realize that she's literally just as capable as any other squadmate in the series is if not more so. Play with her and Wrex and listen to their conversations and you'll learn quickly how "shy" she really is. She has more lived experience than anyone else in the series outside Samara who is a blip on the radar in relevancy.

Just because she's "awkward" (she's supposed to seem alien) doesn't mean she's fucking retarded or incompetent. She's just as much of a killer as everyone else on the team.

Ludonarrative dissonance. Liara is a college co-ed archeologist. She shouldn't be a hardened soldier. Tali has the excuse that her people would have trained her for it explicitly since every quarian has to undergo the Pilgrimage.

Answer the question. Is it reasonable that an archeologist with zero training could become a spy master in 2 years? So much so that they outpace the best efforts of every other government? Would you expect this in real life?

>She shouldn't be a hardened soldier.
You don't understand anything whatsoever. She's the daughter of an Asari Matriarch. She was raised to be a biotic warrior. Now you're defending Tali like the space aids gypsy being a soldier is somehow more realistic whenever Liara is literally a 100 year old sorceress.

Wrex tells Liara that she's pretty powerful, and asks if other Asari are just as powerful as her. "Not all of us have the desire nor the skill to use their abilities effectively". Wrex responds "You could've conquered the galaxy if you'd wanted to." Seems to me like Liara is pretty fucking strong and willing to use her abilities if Wrex is the one saying it.

The ME2 ending sequence and the DLCs were obviously different hands trying to prep for ME3. It was 100% obvious the original plan was for each individual reaper to be unique and modelled after an individual species like the human reaper was. Then by the end of ME2's crunch people that were doing preproduction on ME3 killed that because it would raise costs for their game when they could copy-paste Sovereign.

And? Emotional drives, personality, training, etc should be internally consistent.

Lets try a different question: if the shadow broker could be traced by someone with zero training in spy mistress shit in 2 years, why couldnt any government do this? What makes Liara, an archeologist, better than literally everyone in the galaxy at this? How is it realistic withing the confines of the universe's own internal rules? Is everyone else stupid, or is Liara a giga genius savant that is good at everything and that makes everyone look retarded by comparison? She very explicitly tells you plain as day who she is. Do you understand what she's saying? "I have the desire and the skill to use my natural talents". Where did she get her skills? She was raised by her mother. Her mother has powerful biotic abilities as well. She's not a commando, she's much more important than that. Liara was raised to become a matriarch and follow in her mothers foot steps in galactic politics, not to be fodder for Thessia.

It certainly explains how Liara might have some insight on "shaping galactic affairs", no? I don't need to explain why Liara is a powerful biotic specialist, the game is pretty damn clear about that. It's all very clearly laid out. Benezia taught Liara how to fight. She didn't learn to fight on the dig site. She was raised to replace her mother. Her mother can fight. She was capable of resurrecting the Rachni after 2000 years. Go listen to Wrex tell you how powerful Liara is, not me.

>more effort put into them than ME1 galaxy exploration missions
ME1 had better immersion and worldbuilding in all of its exploration, and it came from the sense that there was a galaxy you were exploring at your own pace. And even though there was clear copypasting going on you never really knew what you'd find out there on the next planet. You'd get a piece of a puzzle on one planet and the objective would update and send you to another one, or to a satellite floating in space. There were great bite size moments and concepts that would get introduced and resolved immediately

mass defect trilogy was the defition of slop. They were call of duty games but with telltale "choices" which is what every normalfag that shouldve been filtered from gaming loved about them. They had all the dogshit things that made AAA games bad but of course /vee/ ignores that. I love mass effect 3 due to it being a massive rugpull on these retards when they thought they were making meaningful choices just to get buttfucked by EA and SHITTYware

Mass Defect 2 being called one of the greatest games ever for also being a shitty call of duty campaign where nothing happens and all the story is at the very beginning and very end of the game is hilarious when mass effect 1 was trying so hard to build that story just for 2 to stall it. The final boss was so bad in 2 that it made me question if gamers cling to the most dogshit garbage just to fit in

If I were to say one good thing though its that mass effect 1 was pretty solid and felt the least like a shitty call of duty cover shooter campaign but thats it

mass defect games insist upon themselves

That's the thing about ME1 that's so special, there's a genius balance of variety between on foot and Mako exploration, on foot and Mako combat, conversations, and cutscenes. Mass Effect is a Gears of War clone, action game with very, very light RPG elements to begin with since the first game. It's the game which killed cRPGs for over a decade by forcing Voiced Protagonist and dialogue wheel cancer.
Chest walls are in ME1 all the same. Only thing of note on ME1 barren planets were copy pasted buildings to which you had to waste time driving through dead rocks.

ME2 does make galaxy exploration better, objectively. Sidequests on planets weren't replaced by scanning, that's a separate mechanic to make all planets in a world usable in a way.

>galactic governments
Incompetent fools. Liara mogs them all easily. You believe the same is true of Shepard, yes? You believe Shepard can accomplish untold feats in 2 years. You would never claim that's bad writing for hours and hours and hours of your life over a decade afterwards, would you?

Is there something else going on here? Why are you upset that the only other character in the series to approach Shepards level of competency is.....his wife?

Why does Liara's competency make you so irrationally angry?
>>
>>746063358
Shepard is set up as being THE guy. And even then, him doing shit oitside of his skillset out of nowhere doesnt fucking happen. Not equivalent at all.

The Council didn't believe the Reapers were real after one invaded The Citadel. Shepard knew the galactic governments that you are championing were all completely retarded. They are literally shown to be incompetent. That's in the very first game. They are blind fools.

What the fuck are you even talking about? Guy lied that ME2 replaced exploration with scanning, while ME2 actually has better designed sidequests on random planets than ME2 so I corrected him. Scanning is a separate mechanic which does not replace exploration.

Mass Effect 1 is a casual, action movie game with light RPG elements. Which did kill cRPGs by forcing Voiced Protagonist and Dialogue Wheel onto industry, casualizing and simplifying entire genre, denying it to true cRPG players. Go to any cRPG hub like RPGCodex and you will see people rightfully shitting on it for this very reason. This isn't a controversial statement, ME1 was simply another consolefag dudebro game in the worst time period in Vidya industry
>>746063072
Mass Effect 2 literally has a modular armor system and superior itemization than cancer inspired by diablo (another stain upon RPGs)

ME1 wasn't an RPG to begin with. They are all a simple action games no different from Gears, to play casually when you don't feel like putting any effort or brainpower or anything into them. ME1 already gutted any and all RPG mechanics, which was a natural path for BioWare ever since Neverwinter and Kotor 1 in particular. Each title making their games more cinematic, casual and like movies

>Shepard suddenly became hyper competent in a skill he had no training in
He finds the last remaining Prothean because he's the Chosen One I guess, and then becomes literally the entire nexus point between entire cycles. He speaks to the last remaining Prothean to understand who the Protheans really are (knowledge that nobody in the entire cycle has ever obtained). Shepard either successfully stops The Reapers in a multitude of ways (something that is completely fucking impossible and unrealistic btw) or otherwise his efforts set up the next cycle that follows to defeat the Reapers, all because his wife was that damn helpful. He is the only man to ever "kill a Reaper" which makes a Reaper PERSONALLY OBSESSED WITH HIM. He is killed and is resurrected again, something that is completely impossible and unrealistic.

HE BECOMES GOD OF THE GALAXY if you so choose. He can and will become instantly hyper competent at absolutely everything that he wants to do, the moment that he wants to do it. He's the protagonist. He LITERALLY SURVIVES the Destroy ending if you have high enough EMS. He is untouchable and God-like.

As well as the horde mode sections, the inability to holster your weapon, the loading screens in the same floor on the Normandy, the Citadel, the journal system, the further removal of exploration, the awful level design, the awful encounter design, the music, the script, the auto-dialogue, the Citadel coup entirely, the worst Reaper fight in the franchise, seriously the journal system, Kai Leng, the gameplay forcing you our of cover if you're playing over 60fps, the segmented health bar, Priority: Earth entirely, lack of boss fights, Cerberus' depiction somehow getting even fucking worse, sidelining the entirety of the ME2 cast, the Rachni Queen choice ... >but 2 married them much better with the sauce that defined Mass Effect than 3 does.
This is because they made the games keep feeling more and more like every other shooter only you get powers. But then so many other shooters do this very same shit too. So nothing stands out anymore.

People will disagree with this but the fact you were kind of limited in ME2 is why it still married better as you put it. You had to rely on cover and powers. Or at least you should have since it greatly helps you out. While in ME3 you can toss grenades and roll around like a retarded action hero. Ironically ME2 is one of the greatest cover shooters ever made actually since it actually does force that playstyle more than just about any game I can think of. It really just needed more RPG elements for the most part to really make what it was going for click but obviously they didn't do this. Ammo powers were dumb though that should have remained equipment for the guns so everyone can still use them.

So am I saying ME2 had the best gameplay of the bunch? Short answer? Basically yes. Not perfect and it needed to adopt more elements from ME1, but it definitely is the better game outright between what came after. Fuck all you but ME3 multiplayer fags also. You are what helped kill this series off. You should have went somewhere else for your horde/wave shooter fix stupid addicts.

Best part of MELE1 is revamped experience. When you're in Mako you now get full experience from killing mobs so you don't have to kill everything on foot. You can also get immediately to lvl60 but as a downside you can only get 1 or 2 sets of Spectre Master Weapons. Noveria and Therum black void glitches are fixed in LE too. But the looks, lighting and atmosphere were not transferred correctly so will need to install mods like A lot of Videos, Textures and Improved static lighting to make it work. Also moderns recreated pinnacle station DLC as a mod.

Everyone knows that Mass Effect 2 is where the series hit its stride and the games should really have just turned into exploring the stars and having Star Trek adventures with your crew with the Reapers as a recurring "looming threat" behind a series of smaller stakes conflicts, because there was no way you could have Shepherd take on a galaxy-ending threat as one guy and it not feel like total bullshit.

Yes it's worth it, there are so many mods to enjoy it's kind of insane. It's not a lot of effort at all though, the original game setup requires more effort and doesn't have even 1/10th of the amount of mods. Legendary is 10x bigger on filesize though, you'll be looking at a 100gb install as well as backup and any mods you install. I think it's worth it personally because ME1 is one of the best games I've ever played

>>746079487
>A lot of Videos, Textures
No, those mods are not necessary whatsoever for LE. The cutscenes are already much better and so are all the textures. In fact, installing those mods is a gigantic waste of time because you have to uninstall them entirely the moment you want to install any new mods.

Avoid any and all texture mods. Not worth the limitations

It was part of it. There was a glitch where it could randomly start trashing around until it exploded and you couldn't get out or go to normandy unless you got very lucky. Some say controls were too bouncy but i never really cared much about that.
Experience wise it made the game tedious since you'd feel bad because you rammed a geth at full speed with mako and launched it into stratosphere only to gain 20exp, and they did it to throttle your exp gains down. It's been a while since i played OG1 but in first character playthrough you could only get to lvl50. That would get you an achievement for more exp, then you'd have to import that character again and play me 1 with it to go from lvl 50 to lvl 60 that also took entire game, to finally gain another achievement for more exp boost. And reaching level 60 meant you get better start in ME2.

I just want to say that ME3 is the RPG game with the most extensive character interactions and ramifications depending on their relationship with the protagonist, even Ashley has different interactions in the DLCs and story missions, and she's the character who got the short end of the stick in that game.
For that alone i will never call ME3 a bad game.
I played Baldur's Gate 3, the supposed greatest western RPG of the decade, and i was so disappointed at how little your romance reacted to things.

We've been getting threads for years now and the only thing announced has been merch and N7 Day nothing-burgers. This game is likely not even making a 2029 release at this rate, and we are expecting after N7 Day 2026, to get 364 days of silence until N7 Day 2027.

Whats even the point
all the talent left, casey hudson fucked up anthem big which means he didnt do shit with the success fo the series
>>

You're asking me the question? You gotta ask EA that question. Which is why everyone is saying that it makes no sense to have this game release at all at this point.

OK and arrival is what killed the entire franchise

Except it was ME2 that specifically made the Reapers the entire story instead of branching out
>>
>>746084024
>that cope again
ME3 brought the Reapers in the Milky Way.
>>
>>746084090
>ME2 fans are disingenuous faggots
Many such cases
>>
ME1>ME2>ME3
>>
>>746084180
>no argument
>just ad hominem attacks
Alright.
>>
>>746084414
ME3 fans are disingenuous faggots
that's why they do that
>>
ME2 and ME3 fans deserve eachother
>>
ME3 fan argument
>All ME3's problems are because of ME2
>OK, what problems does ME3 have?
>Nothing, it's perfect
>Then what's wrong with ME2?
>It doesn't introduce the Crucible
That wasn't for ME2 to decide, though.

ME3 has better sex scenes and multiplayer so that is why it rapes the other games so hard.
Nobody gives a shit about some boring game where you read text like a book.
>>

>>ME3 has better sex scenes and multiplayer
I piss on all multiplayer games.
I hope every single multiplayer game ever gets Concorded.
>>
>>746085019
Literally nobody says 3 doesn't have problems, thats 2 fans doing that lol.
>>
>>746085293
>this game is the best one because it has improved the combat and gameplay
>the one with the best combat and gameplay doesn't count though because I said so
>>
>>746085391
>multiplayer
>indicative of combat quality
So Concord is better than ME1 and ME2, then?
>>
>>746085478
No, the multiplayer was just good harmless horde mode fun. Either way the best combat in the series is in 3, which is why it's funny that 2 having better combat than 1 is like 70% of the praise that me2 gets

>>No, the multiplayer was just good harmless horde mode fun
No, it was plenty harmful with lootboxes and MTX

ME3... If the whole game had more involvement of previous games' choices like Tunchanka and to a lesser extent Rannoch and the final mission was more akin to the Suicide Mission from ME2, the game could have been excellent. Unfortunately most of the action-consequence cycle seems front-loaded and gets worse the further the game progresses. The only thing it did much better than the previous games was making Vanguard gameplay much more fun.
