Last 9Kunitsu-Gami: action/tower defense/strategy hybrid. I love the concept a lot, UFO 50's Rock On! was one of my favorite games in recent years.Awesome art but weird game. Weird balance, questionable design.Generally too easy, designed around pushing you to replay each level twice to complete optional challenges, for drip-fed unlocks, meta-progression crap, that make your units OP. Linear unit unlocks means more limited strategic choices, especially early game. Takes a while for the "real game" to start.Strange, like the game is probably only difficult, therefore interesting to strategize, if you ignore challenges and remain low on upgrades. Yet challenges are the only interesting bits that require some effort. Annoying: you only learn what the challenges are on replay.The TD/strategy part often feels mindless. Early game, you can just camp in front of enemy spawns and mindlessly mash x x x y. They sometimes try to complexify things a bit with traps, hazards, elevated terrain, etc. but in most cases you can ignore the level design because just spamming units in front of gates or surrounding the princess is enough to win.At least it sometimes breaks up the gameplay in fun ways. Maybe 10% of the levels go full action or full TD, those actually felt better tuned than the 90% of hybrid levels.There's also baffling time-wasting. Your main resource economy carries over between levels, which could be cool because it could force you to strategize the current level while also thinking about saving for the next one. Except you can refill your resources for free just by revisiting previous camps, which means sitting through multiple loading screens and menus.Base building is mostly mindless tedium filler between proper combat. It's an okay pace breaker but could have been made much more interesting as an actual economy minigame.Still, having fun with it, gets better in mid game. But Rock On! did so much more with so much less. Much more satisfying design.

Not the most advanced or difficult but very well-paced with something always asking you to pay attention to enemy patterns to maximize score if not stay safe. I find Tetsuya Mizuguchi games always manage to polish a simple gameplay system very well and just overload you with exceptional presentation/feedback because you can take all of that in while still having the mental bandwidth for the game (Lumines series, Tetris Effect, Space Channel 5, etc.). The final Stage of the base game and Area X which they made for the modern port are two of my favorite levels in any game. Star Fox 64 or Sin & Punishment or other rail shooters will give you more involved replay value or greater challenge but Rez gets close and there really isn't anything quite like playing it through.
