I'm gonna give a balanced take.

>Anemic enemies

Really only the nurses show any signs of life and are aggressive. There's too few enemy types, and they are too slow. I bet anything they listened to people who whined about the teradactyls, dogs, apes, nurses, and children, and thus "fixed" it.

>graphics and visuals

They focused hard on atmosphere, visuals, sound, and visual setpieces, but not so much the gameplay experience. In SH1, you are given most of your gear right away, but in SH2, it takes a whole 30-45 minutes of running through the apartment until you get it.

>first weapon sucks

The stick sucks. It has goofy animations and it's weak. Players want to feel strong and cool and first impressions help. The pipe is cool and lays the smack down, but it's after the first apartment.

>enemy grabs removed

One of the biggest threats were the humanoid enemies grabbing you while others attacked and this is removed. Likely due to player complaints. But it also means the strongest and most threatening move gangs of humanoid enemies can pull is gone.

SH1 was the better package overall, even though SH2 did a lot of refinement for the controls and animations.

I bought Alan Wake for $4 knowing that the gameplay was gonna suck and the story would probably be solid and I just couldn't do it. After killing my 65th demonic lumberjack shadow-man I uninstalled, what a piece of shit.

It turned it into Last of Us because they're idiot budget devs who follow the leader and make cookie cutter games. And i-frames have no place in games like this. There's a webm of abusing i-frames against the bosses and it's very silly looking.

There's tons of little details I like more in the original - games rarely holds weapons right and fires them sloppily because he has no training in these things. Remake James is a soldier from Call of Duty.

The less said on melee the better. It's smoke and mirrors and canned animations with magnetic attacks. It's a simulation rather than actual combat.

Remake? It's a mid game, honestly.

I play the OG SH2 every year, this year I'm playing with the over the shoulder camera mod to just change things a little bit.

But SH2R misses the mark. The cutscenes are inferior. They keep focusing on the FACE. They have a FACE MOCAP TECH so they NEED TO SHOW IT, which detracts from every single cutscene.

My issue with the remake:
-plays like every single other over the shoulder UE5 game ever made
-padded to hell and back
-is that a brand new room that wasn't in the original game? I wonder what is th- ammo and mannequin, repeat 10x
-the aesthetic is taken straight from the movies, not from the original game
-sanitized textures, they have no grunge grime whatsoever
-boss fight changes (every boss except for eddie roars now)
-seriously, the roaring is a real fucking problem, am I playing a generic fucking MMO? why is every boss roaring with particles falling from the ceiling?
-Maria's VA sounds bored (good as Mary, though, except for the letter reading)
-Maria is not sexy
-Maria is not flirt
-Maria is not Maria
-Absolutely garbage butchered letter reading and they removed important parts of the letter
-Angela's VA can't act
-Extra Angela scene to further show that Angela's VA can't act
-Laura sounds like the idea of a child written by a gen x/late millennial that has never interacted with a child before
-Awful cutscene direction
>>
>>746014443

what you wannabe moviefags don't understand is that how a videogame story is told is more important than the story itself

Oh, I know it's fine and can be used by speed-runners and optimized. However, it doesn't give you a sense of power and the animations are pretty silly for it. The first section of the game give new players a terrible first impression of the game. Compare it to the first game.

There's far more grime in the remake, in the OG you could barely tell between the regular and nightmare hospital, RE takes the atmosphere closer to SH3's intensity.
>>
>>746015248
Yeah, I thought the same too. Silent Hill never had too much emphasis on combat. I remember Homecoming and Downpour being bashed because they focused too much on melee combat so I was surprised to this game's reaction when people were praising it for the repetitive, boring, dragged on fights that take up to two thirds of the playthrough. Guess zoomers and washed up millenials that never could finish the originals just found the mechanics appealing. In the classics, only Silent Hill 3 tried to make a combat a thing and that heavily imparted a message unto it so it was not done without a purpose. Silent Hill protagonists are your everyday Joe, making them veterans that feel like they went through nam slicing hordes of enemies just feels silly.

CUz it's different settings. SH2 remake is just doing the SH movie look to everything with no nuance. It's not a nightmare world, it's more about depression and bleakness. It's wet and there's a theme of water damage and puddles everywhere (foreshadowing and water is damp and negative).

The prison complex was a different kind of nightmare.

Remake series is just going to make everything look identical. SH1 remake will look the same. Anything unique about SH1-2-3- will be erased.

Do people even know what the hell this kind of floor is anymore? They're glued tiles and very common in the 70s and 80s. The water damage has made the tiles come out.

>There's far more grime in the remake
Not him, but not in a million years.

Also the whole 2 worlds thing was handled like in SH1 in the remake, and SH2 was a lot more ambiguous about that, which was a good thing. The orange oxidation grime and such was not part of SH2's visual language as much as it was SH1's. But now we have a remake for SH1 coming and its going to be the exact same thing as the remake of SH2. So yeah, they shot themselves in the foot there.

It's more of a visual theme of decay, abandonment, and water damage. Even the "normal" interiors look like they have been abandoned for a decade or more. The original game was quite vague on why this is or if it means anything. One fan theory is that the town actually is abandoned.

Caligula Effect
-Queuing attacks on a timeline as the battle progresses is stupid, imageepoch didn't die for this.
Crisis Core
-You barely get to do the cool gameplay because the slotmachine queues easy mode for you.
Crymachina
-SAO gameplay from Aquria just turns out clunky with strong emphasis on side weapon use which are better designed in tof gadgets and wuwa summons.
Elemental Knights Online
-This mmorpg is great but never released any new classes leading to stagnation.
Epic Seven
-Has CVS receipt long levels of bullshit rng mechanics which its competitor Outerplane solved but then fell themselves.
Freedom Wars Remake
-Every enemy was made an ammo pinata so there is no scarcity in this game, they nerfed enemy sniper accuracy, they gutted facility production out of the game and they nerfed module stacking and fucked with the attribute system. Shift inc is rolling in their grave.
Genshin Impact
-For a game based on elemental reactions, having each character have a specific elemental reaction cooldown to enforce character tier weakness is diabolical.
God Eater Resurrection
-This game added devour styles, but is basically god eater 2 without the blood arts so you fight the monsters unbalanced underpowered, until you gain the devour style that gives you an entire op bar and break the system. They got rid of custom bullets like advanced pierce large destroying much of the gameplay.
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis
-This game has good story? Yes, up to the dfa finale before it falls to pieces. But no new classes over its predecessor, no unique class weapon potentials, shit starless enemies, gameplay tick delay to 1s to save on server costs on a counter dependent game and no rng terrain killed it.
Pokemon Master EX
-Unify npc trainers worldwide, but put them on a 3V3 chinese game slop.
Project Tokyo Dolls
-Nothing but 2D parry gameplay gets tiring.
Touhou 13: Ten Desires
-The only way to hear spirit track versions of songs is if you die, its real dumb.

>So yeah, they shot themselves in the foot there.

You think anyone will notice or care? It's going to be a checklist of what a "SH game is". Will they even include the out of season snow?

SH is more of an infamous series most people who game over 25 have heard about, but not played. "Oh that's that psychological horror game with fog and shit!"

Normals will not pirate a game, will not think about getting an old pc version to work, so these games are functionally invisible to them. So they buy the remakes, and it played like a Modern Game Should, so they like it. They liked God of War Ragnarok, and these games all have the same kind of melee combat with super cool canned animations.

They'll eat it up. They have no context to compare it to. The old game is invisible and like clunky bro.

>Silent Hill never had too much emphasis on combat
SH3 literally had sekiro perfect deflects allowing you to sit in front of enemies and attack/deflect with no damage.
People never really tried getting deep into the mechanics, and it's not like they were properly tutorialized.

Besides the dodge spam, the new combat is much better, and each enemy has a clear discinct moveset and role, patients actually have good range on the spit and various spitting patterns, grabs etc.
Meanhile OG patients basically have melee range on the spit, functionally being identical to nurses/manequins.
Only the sliding patients actually felt like distinct enemies in terms of moves.

Manequins actually run and randomly hide in set locations in th remake, while in the OG they just freeze in place sometimes allowing you to just attack first.
Nurses have some kind of deflect/parry when you try meleespam and grab your weapon on the 4th swing and push you into a stagger.

If you read the rest of my post, you'd know I specifically address Silent Hill 3 and explain that combat is particularly important to convey something meaningful to the themes the game portrays. It's one of the few titles were combat actually makes sense due to the consequences engraved on it and the game punishes you for it since combat is NOT meant to be a driving force of the series. The rest of your post isn't really interesting to discuss since you want to dwell into why the combat mechanics are good but that's not really the point people are making or discussing - while you might be right for the reasons why you like it, the whole point people are making is that the series never had to put any emphasis into it for narrative reasons. Besides, if I want combat, I'll just go play Resident Evil which does it infinitely better than Silent Hill could ever hope to do.

No it's real. People will literally rewrite events in their mind to protect their ego. Some people are physically incapable of accepting that the can do evil things. The incriminating events either never happened, or are rewritten in a way where the perpetrator becomes the victim.

I actually agree that I think the reason why enemies are less aggressive is probably because of complaints of the first game, but I also think it could be because unlike SH1 there are no exclusive outdoor enemies so most enemies have a wider invisible field before they start attacking so they have a better chance of actually hitting you when you run by them at normal running speed.
>In SH1, you are given most of your gear right away
That's not true, the intro before you wake up in the cafe is just a shortened version of the same walking sim intro of 2 but it still takes almost 10 minutes before you can fully play the game if you don't skip the cutscenes. You can only fully skip the intro in NG+ which you admittedly can't do for 2.
>but in SH2, it takes a whole 30-45 minutes of running through the apartment until you get it.
You get the plank at about the 15-20 minute mark and you can get the flashlight and pistol almost immediately as you reach the apartments.
>Players want to feel strong and cool and first impressions help.
The plank is awkward to use but you can knock down lying figures and mannequins easily with two-three heavy attacks and it's the only melee weapon you can actually use while moving (besides the steel pipe but only with its secret third attack that you can only use on hard action) plus you still get the pistol in the apartments.
>enemy grabs removed likely due to player complaints
You're probably right but the abstract daddies in the hotel can still grab you and almost every boss can.

As you said SH2 improved some things while doing other things worse mostly enemy behavior and boss fights. I still prefer 2 due to the overall story and presentation as well as improved controls and level design but there's a good case to be made for why SH1 is the best. I still like them both.

it shouldn't fucking work, the whole point behind old SH combat is "don't let the enemy get near you"

Pyramidhead is the most recognizeable enemy in the game, to have a dodge button that you can press takes away from the scare factor. It's why most horror games just avoid fighting altogether because it's a monster that should kill you the moment it's in front of you

The remake does little to improve the flow of combat while forcing you to constantly fight the same 3 enemies a lot more with a smaller pool of weapons and attack animations than the original while actively making the pacing, level design, story, characters, aesthetics and presentation worse but oh le combat is le harder than the OG so that means it's le better according to some of the tards here. Despite what this board wants to tell you combat difficulty does not automatically make a game better or even good. Pacing is actually an issue in a lot of games but it's not really a complaint you'll hear a lot from gamers compared to moviegoers because most gamers play maybe a few times a week and takes long breaks between sessions and very likely plays more than one game at a time and rarely actually bothers finishing them to begin with so they'll never notice it.

What difficulty is this on? I remember things taking a lot of hits to die when I played the game years ago, but probably not as many as in that clip.
>>
>>746027817
Enemies are actually far less spongy than the original on hard mode especially because you can manually aim and do x2 headshot damage.
They also take more damage if you pistol them in the leg and melee as they stagger.
And point blank shotgun hits also pancake them to the ground allowing you to get 3 stomps in before they try to get up.

Way to misunderstand psychology faggot. This game is a psychological horror masterpiece. I am not surprised the low IQ do not get it.

This is hard mode for sure, nurses are tanks.
But they're very blind, if you turn off you flashlight and get one from behind, you get a unique overhead slam animation that takes 80% of her HP and drops her down then you just stomp her for the rest.

Both have dogshit gameplay but OG is better cause it has a braindead easy difficulty that makes it speedurn friendly, 2 DEImake has a Chainsaw but it's boring infinite ammo for guns wouldve been more fun
>>
>>746028068
Idk but there's not much difference between how tanky enemies are on hard and normal unless they changed it in a patch nor does it really change that you have to approach them the same couple of ways each time in every encounter unlike the original with twice maybe even thrice the amount of encounters as before.

>>746028293
>Enemies are actually far less spongy than the original on hard mode
If you continue to wail on them instead of stomping them or don't stomp them in time when they're in their near death state then yes they become very spongy because they just get back up to full health a couple of times otherwise it takes a small handful of shots and a stomp or two to kill a single enemy. I think Team Silent did it like that to make 10 star runs more challenging.
>They also take more damage if you pistol them in the leg and melee as they stagger.
Which leads to more repetition since it limits the way you can approach combat with your 3 guns and 1 melee weapon that has 1 type of attack.
>pancake them to the ground allowing you to get 3 stomps in before they try to get up.
Compared to the 1 or 2 in all of the originals on any difficulty level.

>Compared to the 1 or 2 in all of the originals on any difficulty level.
Stomps are far faster in the remake, you do 3-4 stops in 2 seconds.
And they do actual damage, they aren't just a scripted thing you need to tag enemies with do to make sure enemies don't get back up.
Sometimes you don't need to stomp at all if you get a good point blank shotgun hit to the head.

yeah the story fucking sucks lol, atmosphere and soundtrack are the only good things about the team silent silent hill games

lmao no

>>746030620
they suck compared to what exactly? what other horror games had better narratives than silent hill at the time?
>>
>>746031071
lmao yes, the combat sucks, the dialogue is erratic in a bad way, the voice acting is cheesy as hell, the puzzles are braindead, exploration is awful (DUDE LOCKED DOORS LMAO)

they suck in themselves, a priori, immanently

Agreed, the atmosphere is great in OG don't get me wrong but Remake genuinely did spook me and made me jump at times because the enemies this time actually feel like a threat. On hard they can kill you in like 3 hits, feels like a proper survival horror now.

>>746014443
Just like in America

He had just killed his wife, stolen her body, and taken it to Silent Hill in order to kill himself with her at the place where they spent their fondest memory together (the "In Water" ending). It was at that moment in the rest area looking in the mirror that the switch flipped in his brain, either through the sheer stress of the fact that he just murdered his wife then being faced with his own visage causing a disassociative episode, the town fucking with his memories in order to "test" and/or "punish" him, or a combination of the two. I've always been a little unclear on that.

It's become an October replay for me every year. The atmosphere is perfect for that month both thematically, and just perfectly matching that feeling when the air is beginning to become cooler and crisp. Just like how REmake is an early summer game for me during thunderstorm season, when you can practically smell the rain and lightning in the air.

I never understood that, it's like they got to the end and realised they didn't had budget and said "fuck it", then proceed to just copy the boss as normal enemies.
It feels wrong.
>>
>>746027198
you wouldn't know how to do this unless you played the game like 5 times
>>
>>746026823
Now show the "combat" in the originals where the enemies barely even react to your presence. Show us those hospital boss fights back-to-back, Pyramid Head, Eddie, or the final boss, mister "muh demake".

I love SH1-4 gameplay
Walking around the town is top comfy. Bonus points for night time
I really liked how they handle tension in those games. Interior areas are oppressive and the music is stressful, but once you finish the dungeon and you return to the lobby of each area the music is calm and going outside feels like a breath of fresh air, even though it has enemies and it's supposed to be spooky

>>
>>746034581
A lot of things were rushed, going from PS1 graphics to PS2 ate up 80% of the development time and budget, that's why things like Mandarins were barely a thing more as an enviormental trap than an enemy.
The remake added them as proper enemies in several sections, including that boss fight at the hotel.
Fun fact: SH2 was gonna have a backstep dodge like SH1 but they couldn't get it to look so they cut it.

How the hell has this remained the GOAT survival horror til this day? I really don't think its been topped yet no matter what people think. Even IGN's own viewers voted the original SH2 as the GOAT survival horror a few years ago. Not that it means much but if even those ignoramuses see it as great then it definitely did something good.
