Any advice on how to enjoy RF4? Never played it on a 3D's so everything is new to me, dropped it 2 times around after a chipmunk steals the feather or charm Venti gives you, I hate the enchanting thing, farming doesn't feel all that good yet(obv because I can only plant turnips now) but I already spent a whole fucking season doing that, some weird hidden things like plowing weeds directly into soil that never explained in game, crafting is unlocked trough eating bread, I want to actually play this game, I never even got to fish properly but idk how I should approach this.

As I understand it, the argument is that Rune Factory was originally envisioned for a male audience, which is correct. Two things can be true, in that it was originally made for a male audience, AND that women have been fans in large numbers from the beginning, just as they were for Harvest Moon. Marvelous/Neverland just realized early on that there was a lot of money to be made by pandering to their sizeable female base. It's annoying, but on some level you can't blame them for following easy money. It wouldn't be so frustrating if there was at least ONE farm sim series geared exclusively and totally towards a male player base, but is there any money to be made there anymore? Remember, Rune Factory mostly tread water until it finally gave in to the otome bucks. There's that one farm sim h game, but I think that one's popularity comes from it having full on sex with your wife more than anything else.

I believe that having a male main character who chooses among several bachelorettes does at least give a little evidence that the target demographic is male just as if there's a game where the main character is female who chooses among several bachelors would give evidence that its target demographic is female. I believe this because I have the belief that if given the option between a male and female protagonist (with respective bachelorettes and bachelors) I believe that most men choose the male protagonist and choose to romance the bachelorettes and that most women choose the female protagonist and romance the bachelors. This is what I believe happened in say Rune Factory 5 or Guardians of Azuma. If you have evidence that the opposite is true I would be interested in seeing it. There was no market data before Harvest Moon released and there's nothing inherently "masculine" about farming. Harvest Moon and all HM-adjacent games will always have a large female audience. It doesn't matter what gender the player character is or what gender the marriage candidates are. It is a genre that appeals to women so regardless of developer intent it will always be for women at least to some degree.
