Everything after Gen 5 has been enshitification at it's worst, with Gen 6 being a transitional period where it was happening (Fairy-types) but it wasn't so apparent that you could put your finger on why it was so bad.
Anything past gen 7 is immediate shite because of GF’s retarded decision to cut out pokemon in the pokemon game to sell more Home subscriptions. Gen 7 was honestly not bad, but still pretty mediocre, I’ll give the ultra games points for difficulty though. Gen 6 was incomplete and rushed, ORAS was decent though (inb4 no battle frontier). Gen 5 is good only for B2W2 and the cracked OST. Gen 4 had Platnium and HGSS, Gen 3 had FrLg and emerald. I would say somewhere between gen 4 and 5.

It's a miracle that Bandai managed to snatch a couple of titles for the Switch, probably Nintendo's hand into trying to get more devs into the franchise. Gamefreak needs to be humbled but not in a marketing way, they need a full take over or something happening internally that changes things. You read the Teraleak, people WANTS to make good things but the seats and high ups in the company make their biggest efforts into that not happening. Wind and Waves in paper sounds like really good, everything you read about their research, their server work, the scale of the game is cool. The trailer kind of reflect some of that but god knows how many cuts from these plans to the final product will happen.

It's not my favorite, but it had acceptable graphics for its console, pushed the series forward mechanically in meaninful way, had mostly alright character Pokemon designs, (I think, I'm no expert, let me know if and how I'm wrong) and overall felt like an evolution of the series. That's not to say the content was better than gen 1 and 2, just that they genuinely tried and released something that didn't feel lazy.

The gameboy had no good RPG games, with Pokemon Silver being pretty excusable by the standards of GBC games only by virtue of most other RPG's being ports. The GBA and DS games keep up the illusion of not being essentially high profile shovelware in their production values, but compare them to anything else on the DS and the GBA and the fact that Pokemon is a inherently cheap franchise is fairly obvious. By the 3DS the illusion largely breaks, and by the Switch it's downright embarrassing.

Gen 5 was also the first one where the characters became more prominent in the story, which is what led to modern pokemon game storytelling where the exploration kinda takes a secondary role over the character dramas.

I never jived with the Gen 3 remakes and I was glad to have completely checked out of modern Pokemon with the Gen 4 remakes.I enjoyed Gen 7 because its presentation was decent and I liked the region's pokemon but when I borrowed a friend's Pokemon X to play through it to collect the mons' I was interested in, I could hardly finish it due to everything fucking else being garbage. Especially the group of chucklefucks who hand-hold you through your journey.
