W11 recently gave me an ick, was trying to play Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 on my W11 PC, but the game didnt run no matter what I did, so I had to pirate the GOG version and do some tinkering on it to be able to play the game
Dont know if it was Steam or W11's fault, but the fact that the game was working perfectly on a laptop with W10 and Linux Mint makes me think that W11 was the main culprit.
Still not going to downgrade or change to Linux, though.
Anyway, thank you for reading my blog post.

In laymens terms, the architecture behind how windows, OSX/MacOS , and Linux are completely different, and so if you create an application to run on one, it will not just natively work on the others. This is why on Mac, most games dont work except for those that have native mac ports.

On linux, there is something called wine which is basically a translation layer that attempts to bridge the gap in the architecture between windows and linux in order to make the applications work. Then Valve basically created/funded a new version of Wine called Proton which has worked WAYY better when it comes to translating things and ever since its introduction gaming on linux has gotten better and better to the point now where most games will work with little to no tinkering.

However, proton as far as I understand it is mostly meant for games, not just generic software, and so you are forced to still use wine, which is nearly as sophisticated.

Programs don't communicate with the system in a magical, "I-don't-care-about-the-OS" way. When you save your game, it's the program telling the system to write a file, if the program talks to Windows and there's no Windows there, shit doesn't work.
Wine, which is what you'd use to run Windows stuff most of the time, basically grabs those calls made to the system and goes "Ah you mean this" and and enables the functionality.

Its already been explained before ITT. Propreitary applications that are made for windows cannot always work with wine. I dont know why you think this is a gotcha lol. You cant use applications that only work on OSX on windows like Logic Pro.

You have a toolbox (I hope) in your house for a reason. There's tools used more often than others and that's fine, you don't throw away your saw just because you use your scredrivers and hammer more.

The truth is that ltieral retards and midwits use phones and tablets now. They don't even need PCs. And that was 90% of all desktop windows users.
Non tech-illiterates use Linux now and are leaving windows behind.

That's why you are so scared shitless. You got left behind.
>>

The average user is tech illiterate, that won't change.
The only way to leave Windows behind involves Linux being the default option for retards.
>>
>>746036705
Linux isn't garbage for gaming per se, it's just garbage for everything in general. Gaming happens to fall under 'everything'.

I use linux every day and it's a trash operating system, championed by pseud retards who misattribute tolerance for tedious bullshit as intelligence and will spend 6 hours unfucking their computer and go "wow I'm so much smarter than that retard windows user who just uses the computer like a fisher price toy where everything actually works"

You use 1 operating system, either it's windows or it's linux, 99% of the time, and the other one you just never log into, because swapping between the two is a 3 minute pain in the ass that interrupts everything else you're doing

Quick google tells me that browser/whatever you're talking about:
1. Doesn't run in linux to begin with
2. Explicitly detects virtual machines and won't run in them either

So I guess your fear is well placed but actually they put in effort to completely prevent it, so you can't do what you want to do to begin with. No need to worry about being called a cheater. You'll have to use windows no matter what. (Or hack around it which is absolutely possible but you'll definitely be called a cheater regardless of actual cheating if anyone finds that out, especially if your skin is White)

Windows has been the standard OS for decades
When people build apps for Windows they use the doors that Microsoft opened for them to get access to your hardware / the OS.
Microsoft does not tell anyone how the doors open or how they close.
The developers of the Linux kernel also do not know how Microsoft opens their doors, so they made their own ways of opening them. Since (desktop) Linux has such a tiny marketshare compared to Windows very few software developers bothered learning those methods, so it was up to enthusiasts to try and reverse engineer the Microsoft methods so that they could trick software into thinking it is on Windows.

He doesn't consider himself part of the retard class, naturally

but most of the people playing games on linux right now wouldn't be doing it if you still had to fuck around with 20 different programs and 200 different settings, tweaking every game individually for your system and doing your own hackey programming scripting horseshit for dozens of hours to get games to run under proton/WINE + whatever other stupid shit was needed. God forbid you even think of modding a game (which is still a massive headache).

You just click a game and press play now and the game 'works' (mostly/usually) and these retards don't get that this is not how games actually worked on linux until valve made it that easy for their retarded asses.

People are using linux more now than ever because it's being 'dumbed down' (made SMARTER, actually, by SMARTER people) for people who do not have the fucking TIME to fuck around playing computer to get things to do what they're supposed to do.

Linux grognards weren't smarter for getting games to work on linux 20 years ago, they were hobbyists playing computer who couldn't care less about the game, or they were stubborn morons. Smart people played games on windows, where it just works - because the point of the operating system is to get the fuck out of the way and let me use my programs to do shit.

A concept that is still fucking alien to a lot of the old retarded linux users out there

Linux has been pic related for far too fucking long and many of the proponents of linux, the delusional retards, are constantly going "damn I'm such a fucking genuis for figuring this out", it's WILD how much of their ego is welded to this tedium = smarter belief

Yes, and so does windows 7, and XP before it, and 98SE before it, and the server flavor versions as well. But you'll sooner or later face the same problem that made or coerced windows 7 users to update unwillingly to 10: Microsoft will deprecate it, programs will do checks and refuse to run after updates, and you will upgrade to 11. No, you won't jump to linux, you'll go to 11, maybe with reluctance, but you will go anyway because it is your comfort zone after all.
There is nothing wrong with this. Such is life, such is choice. But fortunately, these are not my choices. It's yours.

The enterprise version of Win 10 is supported till 2032 when it comes to security updates, I'd wager that's how long it's gonna be supported by the most basic stuff like browsers and whatnot.

That being said, unless Linux is 100% compatible with Windows and I never have to worry about Photoshop or some obscure software not working, I'll never swap to Linux. I'd have to be fucking retarded to switch to an OS that actively gets in the way of me doing things just because some fat troons think it's better. Hopefully in the next few years some solutions emerge, we'll see.

>>746057878
Most likely linux will continue very gradually improving (e.g. getting the fuck out of your way) while windows goes in the opposite direction (due to jeets).

This is fundamentally what's driving the current 'surge' in linux users. It's getting out of your way more and things are more often just working. There is still a long way to go, the operating system is a goddamn fucking mess, but directionally, and perhaps especially thanks to it constantly being forked, there is progress over time.

It shouldn't have taken 30 fucking years to get to the state it's in today however.

It's not the security updates that are a concern, anon. It's your own third party software. Some of them will simply refuse to work after an update or won't support your OS anymore. Saying you have until a certain year is just mentally comforting yourself. I feel like Marche when I say this, but don't you see, you're running out of time. You shouldn't even have a time limit imposed upon yourself, that implies you really don't have full control of your machine.

actually insanely easy to do, in fact i'm using the same script i used for the very first release of windows 10, i genuinely do not know how are other people disabling win update and why it comes back for them, the script that i use taps into group policy, no extra steps have been done, literally same script to activate it too (the "crack").
i choose the tiny versions of these OS because they are tripped out of useless things but they maintain core functionality (such as edge/webview)
if it wasn't for the UI change i wouldn't even know the OS was any different

Maybe you're too young, but back in 2005 there was plenty of PNG vulnerabilities that only by loading the image would execute code on your machine. Plenty of these were used to hack psp left and right.
One of the recent ones was with webp, (https://www.vicarius.io/vsociety/posts/zero-day-webp-vulnerability-cve-2023-4863) just by loading the image in your browser it makes you run malicious code. Now you will say "but it runs only as the user level because its a browser", but this year alone the number of zero days patched on windows was of 15, plenty of scalation vulnerabilities that can elevate from being a restricted user to administrator.

yeah i get it, but i also get why ms is so aggressive with this kind of stuff (such as win updates)
it's because most people can't use their pc for shit, the only way to keep these people from making a mess is to have them updated at all times.
it's a necessary evil that mostly hit non-technical users for their own safety.
now i can agree that ms updates have been awful, but i'll also try to be honest and every OS had this shit at least from vista and up..
now, if you make a security option too easy to disable, it ends up being the equivalent of not having a security options, that's how i see it.
the two things that MS has to do to improve the OS image and reputation is to output quality updates and allow users to post pone updates to their liking (withing limits) easily.
but generally speaking, the power user doesn't suffer from this (unless there's a critical bug in the OS itself)
unfortunately can't have it all, as you know, windows is the easiest gateway for malware because security was never enforced, now MS is going all in with layers of security and they are even flagging their own apps as malwares sometimes due to the database not updating to new hashes.
hope you get my point, all this stuff should be gated for the experienced people and not for the random users or they'll end up with a 2 years old un-updated pc that becomes an easy gateway to spread malware or become part of a botnet and shit like that

you're making it sound like you're automatically and magically hacked if you use windows, but it's far from it.
these points do not work well for the argument.
a better argument is "demand better for the price you pay for the OS" which is something i can actually agree with.
in regard of ai and shit, the linux kernel is literally about to get flooded by ai slop, so even that point doesn't stand anymore.
literally just pick whichever OS works for you use case, in my case compatibility is key and i don't have to beg some tranny to update proton so my games will finally start rendering the terrain

Microsoft will never give away Windows for free. They'd rather you pirate it, because then they have potential grounds to sue you for settlements if you're a business owner or collect your data usage for sales statistics and software optimization. But I really wish they gave it away for free officially, it would solve so many PEBKAC problems.

The 9950X3D2 is the one with 16 cores right?

What benefit does it have with the CCD setup? I've also heard of people locking applications to cores with the x3d cache, but shouldn't that be all of them?
>>
>>746065030
no, without the 2, there's no point to dual v cache, just a 9950x3d

it means that you can have 8 cores doing a workload at lower latency instead of just 6
if something has to jump to the other core complex latency goes up and performance goes down
>>
>>746065152
Right ok I see, so it varies how performant the 'groups' of cores are on each CCD, and if it has to change which performance profile it's using for each group, it creates a stutter? Alright I see.

I'll probably just go for the 9800x3d then. I was half tempted by the 9900x3d for 'future proofing.'

9800x3D for sure. And i have the exact same build as you. Do I recommend linux?
As someone who did distro hop between Bazzite and Cachyos for almost this whole year so far. I don't recommend it at all. I feel like Linux is getting there to being a good viable option. But for my personal experiences on being PC gaming since I was a child.
I feel like Linux currently feels more like generic brand , extra steps and extra complications. I do agree it has got better through out the years. Significantly way better in regards of running software and games
Overall if you just want it running straight off the bat , no worries about bullshit and easier to DYI to fix your problems. Windows 10-11.
You don't want Microsoft having your info , avoiding all the bullshit at setting up your PC when you first install the OS, more freedom of tracking and customize your desktop, Linux.
Linux is good. I can't say it's very good OR near perfect. you're going to run into a technical issue that's very specific . I ran into a few and had to wait a while for some help to teach me. But overall I would say it's a decent alternative for windows 11
You're going to have to experiment and see if you do like it or not. I didn't and I switched back last month to windows 11.

If you learn how systemd works and how you build a system around it, you are also capable of figuring out how sysvinit works and how to build a system around that.
You can use whatever the fuck init you want or make your own. LFS is a book that teaches you to build a linux system. You're a meme if you need step by step instructions like a lego to build your OS and can't apply lessons learned to customize it. Talking about some kind of "endgame" while being a beginner is completely pointless.
Not that I think "endgame distro" is actually any kind of meaningful term, unless you define it as "the distro I'm going to stick with" and that could be anything based on who you're talking to. The person who brought it up clearly isn't defining it like that. He's just doing the "I use arch btw" thing with Gentoo.

>Linux isn't garbage for gaming per se, it's just garbage for everything in general.
It's about time. Someone needed to say it.

Linux is shit. For privacy? You put up with all that bullshit just for privacy? What kind of shit are you doing on that linux pc that you are so in need of privacy? Most people couldn't give a shit if google wants to know what brand of socks I just bought or that I just posted to an Asmongold social media site or that I just downloaded music or that I played video games on Steam for the last two hours or that I sent an email to my mom asking her to email me a recipe for those cookies she made last year or the collection of photos I took at my brother's graduation ceremony. Most people do mundane things on their pc. Privacy for that? For what purpose? Give me an operating system that just works, that doesn't implode just because I updated one driver, that doesn't complain and refuses to run a new updated version of a program, that consistently runs all my games. Oops, this game doesn't work. Wait, let me spend the next seven hours trying to diagnose and remedy the problem only to break more things in the process. Ahh, the linux experience. Fuck outta here with that shit. Stop looking at child porn you weirdo pervert and get yourself an operating system that just works.

Windows is extremely convenient. I don’t need to waste time learning how to code or how the operating system works, it just works, and it works well and immediately for work, hobbies, and entertainment. That said, if windows were ever to become openly intrusive in the sense that it begins marking my illustrations with hidden watermarks etc. I would swap to Linux and do everything the hard way purely on principle, but as of now I see nothing but a timesink when looking at Linux. Nobody has ever given me a good answer on why I should learn computers or how

There aren't 39282619 ways to run games on Linux everyone is using the same toolset and most distros are largely similar. Everyone uses ProtonDB and the Arch wiki to pool info. Noobs usually stop distrohopping when they realize this. Fedora is just blue Ubuntu that doesn't have snaps and Arch is just blue Debian that updates fast instead of updating slow. Unless you use weird shit like Gentoo you can "learn" a new distro on the first day of using it and get all of the same programs and everything works the same.

I'm thinking of making the switch to Linux purely because I'm tired of being a Windows sysadmin and if I learn Linux at home I have a better shot of jumping into our Linux team and being put on the RHCSA courses when a position opens up. We use RHEL so I guess it makes sense to install Fedora at home, but I've heard Cachy is a lot better for gaming which is all I use my PC for. I'll probably end up running a RHEL VM for practice anyway, but will I lose a lot of natural learning opportunities running Cachy over Fedora? I really have no idea how significantly the various distributions actually differ.

They both come ready for end-user, unlike something like Arch without archinstall or LFS. Linux Bible by Negus is supposed to be the RHEL admin guide, but I didn't like it much, my recommendation is this.
>>
>>746075078
>We use RHEL so I guess it makes sense to install Fedora at home
Use Fedora, your work company already knows it, so it'll come in handy. Just make sure to enable 3rd party repos like rpmfusion in the welcome screen or whatever you call it, you'll need it for copyrighted media playback. It didn't use to be this way but they separated it so they don't get targeted by other corporations.
If you have all AMD hardware, try Nobara, it's Fedora but tweaked for gaming. The maintainer is a RHEL employee and in charge of Proton-GE a fork of Valve's Proton. Make sure to read the documentation about updates on site because the one problem with this distro is updates, you can't use fedora's way of system updates because of what amounts to de-syncing with existing software.
>>
>>746075078
There isn't actually any huge difference in gaming on Cachy compared to most other distros. At best, it's single-percent improvements and somewhat better 1% lows. Most of its appeal is in being already set up for most people alongside the kernel tweaks, though you can use its kernel on base arch or fedora as well if you really want to anyway.
If you want to learn how to use Arch then you can use that, or even install Arch and set it up yourself, otherwise Fedora seems to fit your goals better on top of being a solid daily driver on its own.
t. Cachy user. I'd hop to Fedora myself but I'm too lazy to set everything up again.

Anon, Fedora is a RHEL product, and RHEL is now a subsidiary of IBM. IBM is the monster that unleashed Microsoft. While they might not phone home, they're pure corporate compared to something like Arch which is more like everyone's, including corps', collective hobby OS. No one directly owns Arch.

Windows is the most widely used desktop operating system in the world because it encourages and mandates behaviors pursued by those of below average intelligence, bringing it into conflict with enlightened higher beings, so often you're just not stupid enough to use Windows.
Its dominance can also be attributed to its status as a default OS, its various licensing agreements with OEMs and the international sanctions and laws it lobbied for to kill rival operating systems.

>>746075078
Testing out Linux distributions is actually a lot easier than people think.
You can buy a decently sized USB drive and install Ventoy on it. Ventoy can be used to store multiple Linux installation ISOs. You can then use them to install distributions on another USB or an external ssd and just run Linux off that.
