Ugly women in games was the inevitable consequence of decades of favoring photorealistic graphics over art direction and style. You wanted everything to look "real" and now they do; the NPCs look like real (American) women. You played yourselves.

The pursuit of ideal wasn't there as much. Even so, male protagonists have largely backslid from action heroes to dadbods.
