Is Halo truly finished this time? Even many ex Halo developers from the first game are coming out speaking about the issues. One even said it would be impossible to get that ex Bungie magic back because times and people have changed. The remake is also showing just how stupid so many gamers and modern developers truly are. There has been such a lack of respect shown to the very people that actually helped create the original Halo game. Its ridiculous
>>
We can hope.
>>
Microsoft would have better luck just licensing Halo out to other studios to make games.

After the utter fumble of Infinite there should have been zero reason to stick with the same in-house team for more pain
>>
>>746052689
This. Infinite was their chance to make a comeback, and they shit down their leg. Even when this was announced, everybody was like “Yeah…you’re not getting me again. I don’t care if you changed the name on the door.”
>>
Humans are Forerunners.
>>
Infinite 2 will be a great success like Infinite was. The Halo 1 Demake was a small misstep.
>>
>>746052689
kek you mean after halo 4? Infinite was like their 5th awful game
>>
>>746052689
>>746053074
Halo 4 was their first chance
They fucked it up
Halo MCC was their next chance
They fucked it up
Halo 5 was their third chance
They fucked it up until the very end
Halo Infinite was their fourth chance
They fucked it up again. They fucked it up worse than 5 somehow. They fucked it up so hard they had to abandoned the game not even a year after release and drip feed what little content they had for the next 3-4 years
Halo Campaign Evolved is their fifth chance
And... they fucked it up again, and not only did they fuck it up, people finally had enough and knew they'd fuck it up

In terms of public reception, outside of the typical apologist wave that always surround these games right before release probably paid shills or people coping hard, no one has given a shit. Not even a tiny bit. This is worse than not delivering on hype. To be ignored is the ultimate death. When no one utters your name, you truly die. But you know what? I can guarantee you that Halo Studios will still exist. Microsoft will never kill this studio. They could release 10 more shitty Halo games that just keep sinking money, they don't care, Microsoft has infinite money, heh. They'll just keep "restructuring" until the heat death of the universe. I want it to be over, but it never will be.
>>
I think Halo fans are finally tired. The humiliation rituals have been so relentlessly endless that there isn't much care anymore for Halo. Most real fans are also in their 30's to 40's. Under 30's were playing other games.
>>
how the fuck did they fuck up remaking halo 1

The recent mass layoffs and the Xbox brand tanking is an indicator that Microsoft doesn't in fact have infinite money and we may see their presence dissolve over the coming years. Infinite killed Halo, but Gamepass is what killed Xbox

Halo Fans are the whiniest faggots ever I swear

Most people liked the 1 and 2 Anniversary Editions.
4 was divisive but was always going to be regardless of what they put out, people were extremely harsh on it.
Halo Wars 2 was awesome
Infinite was considered a return to form

Only 5 legitimately sucked.

This is bullshit
there is nothing stopping these fucking faggots from grabbing halo 3's game play and repackaging it like halo campaign evolved

the problem is that 343 are trying to still force their sprint mechanic, smartlink(ads on ar for example) mechanic, and weird fucked up canon that no one likes

I want Halo 5.2 and to just pretend Halo Infinite's gameplay changes didnt happen.
I think it could be done if they decide to start fresh with a new main character. There needs to be some kind of Silent Nod between chief and the new main character as the hand off. A team of Spartan 4s as a way to say, this new movement tech is a Spartan 4 feature set and not something Spartan 2s needed. Since halo 5 multiplayer in universe was always a training Sim for Spartan 4s. I loved the movement, but the fanbase needs a reason for the gameplay upgrade.

>>
>>746053675
343 has been a revolving door of devs since they worked on the Reach updates, most of the people that worked on Halo 4 were gone by the time of Halo 5. Most of the devs that started to work on Halo:Infinite were gone when game was in its second year of development, and those that replaced them were gone when it was launched and the new guys were left to handle the post launch content. 343 has always been outsourcing central, it's just the Microsoft way and that won't change anytime soon.

>>
>>746058565

ive been playing since Halo 1, some 6000 games played in Halo 2, a few thousand in Halo 3 and Reach.
Halo 5 without a doubt had the best gameplay and multiplayer in the series. All the weapons felt good and useful. The map design, even the forged ones felt well designed to offer each weapon and play style a place to flourish or gamble. Ive always loved driving warthogs, since i play the objective and played the shit out of BTB and Skirmish in halo 2 and 3, Halo 5 has the best vehicles. They nailed the handling, the weight, durability, and the turret was actually good for once. And the extra mechanics enabled through thrusters added useful tools to combat with their own strengths and weaknesses, and times to use them. Allowing a player with no weapon or ammo the ability to be lethal through well executed maneuvers and map knowledge, introducing a skill ceiling in halo i had not seen since 2.

in the campaign, they added easier weak points the the knights. they were already an easily baited enemy in 4, but it seems most halo players dont pick up on enemy behaviors, so they were given obvious weakpoints.
>>
>>746054608
>but Gamepass is what killed Xbox
It was a pretty dumb gamble really. They could have kept playing it safe and did console gaming the way its been working until they killed off Sony with the buyouts of other studios they were doing. But this company is too greedy and overshot with Xbox One when that was supposed to be the generation that they tried hard to solidify themselves as being the competition to PlayStation. With a much more solid lineup of exclusives than Sony could ever hope to muster I think in time Xbox would have surely dethroned PlayStation in this current gen. Especially seeing how bad Sony is fumbling the ball now. All that goodwill support they had with the 360 got pissed away.

Reach was probably the best in the series or at least on par with 2. Infinite and Halo Wars 2 were good also. Can boomers please stop with this shit that older games were better because they were in school or whatever at the time

>>
>>746052851
Yes and no. It would be more accurate to reverse those. Forerunners are specifically the ancient humans that built the halo rings. But not all humans are Forerunners. For example a guy walking down the street in New Mombasa isn't a Forerunner because he didn't build the Halo Rings. But his human DNA (or whatever) would be recognized by the Halo Ring as "Forerunner" and he could activate the Ring.

The game after the next one should be a soft reboot set 1000+ years after Master Chief's coming death in Infinite 2.

>>746054948
>the problem is that 343 are trying to still force their sprint mechanic, smartlink(ads on ar for example) mechanic, and weird fucked up canon that no one likes
This is very true. They can call it any stupid name they want but its basically working exactly like how aim down sights does. Its really fucking stupid. As you said nothing has ever stopped them from going back to the roots. They refuse to though because they think nobody will buy the game if it doesn't play like a modern warfare military shooter. Never mind the fact that Chief is a spartan in an advanced military combat suit and can jump 20 feet in the air with regenerating shielding that can essentially prevent him from dying by gunfire ever as long as he stays mobile enough in a gunfight.
>>
>>746060075
>lolreqs

they were never an issue. since enemies would spawn in regularly with power weapons. you could always fight off NPCs before the enemy team got there to control the power weapon drops. Almost like people killing Raiders in Labs in Tarkov. You know they have some decent stuff, kill them, and use their gear to kill the enemy. And if youre a decent player and the enemy team stole all the good weapons or spawned one in, well just kill them for it. Its not like the br stopped being dominant and the AR was surprising strong single fired.

the req packs also enabled a way to unlock tons of armor. more customization options than any of the previous games.

That's what Halo 4 should've been honestly: something only tangentially related to the Master Chief games by the established lore that sets up something that respects what came before it while allowing the player to deal with a new problem. That or just a side-story the ramifications of Halo 3 in a logical way that isn't a complete lore clusterfuck.

their weapons felt consistent.
if you take a halo 2 SMG or halo 3 AR, you could be certain that when fired the bullets would be somewhere in the circle. However at greater range if you are aiming at an enemy that only takes up 25% or half of the circle, no matter how good your aim is, you will miss for no fault of your own. While Halo 2 had better maps and lanes to take advantage of close quarters weapons, 3 did more often lacked those zones or trapped them between BR dominated zones, causing that inconsistency to make the weapon you are using feel worthless. In 5, they took some of the bloom from Reach, but it recentered quickly, allowing you to burst or single fire with the SMG or AR at range and hit people at distances previously not possible. even the plasma weapons benefited from having greater accuracy. overall no matter what you picked up, i could be confident that it could do the job, but also paired with more varied terrain with cover, there was always somewhere i could go to fit the weapons strengths.

>>746061596

the maps lacked cover, and often had dead zones just big enough to be picked off by brs. And the inclusion of the spartan laser, rocket pods, energy drainers, bubble shields, and warthogs that could be flipped with small arms fire. While Halo 1 and 2 were fun because of mixed combat, halo 3 went heavy on making sure close quarters combat and vehicles were off limits.

but also the campaign felt hollow. preoccupied with being bigger, but nothing interesting to fill the void they created.
>>
>>746062336
>it's like they took design philosophy from 3
They didn't, everything I'd closer to Reach/5. The equipment in Infinite isn't designed like 3's at all because they don't behave in a neutral way that can benefit or hurt either side. There is much less emphasis on physics, player collision, limited weapon niches, etc.

Infinite is nothing like 3 just take a look at how they ruined the gravity hammer

There's only 2 dual wield guns in 3 that are shit, and they aren't even good when dual wielded: the spiker and magnum.
The 2 plasma guns are good against OS and for setting up melees.
The SMG has the same DPS as the AR.
The Mauler can't one-shot in regular damage settings, but you're going to be punching right after a regular shotgun blast too. Plus, it reloads all at once.

H5 brings back even starts, as well as map pickups, AND restores the golden triangle by not having an additional damage/sandbox element like equipment or armor abilities. And while it adds new base player abilities, 2 had already done that, so none of that should be "inherently un-halo", especially since most of 5's new abilities actually enhance the "emphasis on platforming" part. If anything, Halo 5 is more classic Halo then Halo 3 is.

All weapons are worth using and can beat the OP h5 magnum. Hell even the AR is crazy strong

Halo 3's only sandbox is BR, BR, BR, sniper, BR, BR, rockets.

The combat needs to evolve.

I dont want CoD, but when 3 and Reach sucked, I got very good at Battlefield (Bad Company 2, sniping people with the AEK's beautiful iron sights) and CoD those years. They do play very different to halo, and ive always suspected Halo fan's revulsion to CoD was based in their inability to adapt to new games.

Proto religious alien empire wants to genocide humanity because the Prophets (leaders of the Covenant) are scared that their followers will learn that humanity are the chosen forbears of the Forerunners (ancient aliens, possibly older humans {kind of retconned but fuck 343's dogshit writing}, that died out from the Halo Rings usage)

Humanity uses Oni's top secret super soldier program that kidnapped and cloned/replaced children to undergo strenuous cybernetic implants and bone replacements to create Spartans, Reach was the foreground of the project but was glassed by Covies, with Master Chief (your character) and a very select few remaining Spartans surviving.

Given the game's name "Halo" you find out the Forerunner superstucture in the first and third game are used to wipe all sentient life across the galaxy, which was the only way to stop the Floods infections. The Prophets falsely beleived the Rings were used to enter paradise, what they call "The Great Journey" (it's not)
The Elite factions (main enemy commonly fought in the first two games) learns of the Prophets lies and joins humanity in a last stand against the Flood infection and split covenant faction.

Personally I don't remember how a single Ring was capable of wiping out most of the Flood, but apparently it worked with its destruction. Humanity creates a truce with the Elites, and the Master Chief goes MIA at the end of Halo 3.

The lore and story are essentially a space opera, some of the books are also really fucking Kino. For a time Halo was my favorite franchise, Bungie knew how to write a good fucking story, but the franchise is dead to me now.

Here's how the Halo 3 hype went on for me back in the day:

-2006 announcement, visor reflection looks pretty great
-2007 summer beta with crackdown 1, visor reflections are gone, but the player legs animate to correspond to terrain changes and you can see a holstered secondary! And custom games let you increase player run speed and splatter people on foot, this is pretty alright
-actual game comes out, has a quasi busted lighting engine that's all over the place in fidelity, ugly facial models even for the time, and there's only one good level in the whole game, the covenant
-post launch, Bungie & ms begins Operation: Ruin Halo Forever with their map pack price points, culminating in the 2009 "ODST=ODLC" schism, where gaming itself was rent in twain. You were expected to pay 60 bucks for H3 ODST because it came with 6 slayer maps that aren't fun, this all but ruined Halo as an IP to this day. If you are an original Halo fan and buy a Halo product after this event, you can practically feel the cynical behaviorist contempt the product itself seems to have for you.

Halo 2 was the perfect game. Excellent story, amazing gameplay, satisfying multiplayer. It didnt hold your hand. The music....perfect

You can't understate how disappointing Halo 3 was back in the day

>worse campaign
>worst writing
>worse maps
>Guardian is a worse Lockout
>Blackout, Guardian, Construct, Foundry, Orbital, Snowbound all sucked as far as comp goes
>Construct, Guardian, The Pit, Narrows were shit
>they had to remake Zanzibar, Lockout and Midship lol
>H3 AR is a joke
>H3 BR feels very janky, especially when compared to the Halo 2 BR
>Equipment is so bad that they were removed in matchmaking lol

im not. ive always had the same issues with Halo 3 since it released but the fanbase is largely blind to the balancing problem i noticed. When 3 released I had a team i would play with in Halo 2, and everyone left to play MW2 because the gameplay in 3 was so stale. Every match was a BR firing line shooting at another BR firing line, then volleys of grenade spam because other weapons couldnt close the gap and vehicles would get deleted on maps with no cover from either the laser or sniper rifle.

So after being very familiar with Halo 2 and 5 which didnt have this problem, then to see Infinite recreate the same problem as 3... we finally took a step forward and a massive leap back.

if you want to find a blind spot in my analysis. I love to play objective game modes. I am the person stealing your flag and arming the bomb. I am driving the warthog. I find Slayer incredibly boring. In Halo 5 Warzone, I was stealing bases and driving oni warthogs as soon as i could call them in. I have a lot of experience at all ranges often against multiple people, so weapon consistency, routes, and general weapon/map balance is critical to me.
>>
>>746064362
Halo 2 had some really shitty sections that always suck to play again. The elevator sections and gondolas especially. That stupid flood elevator is so fucking long and even on legendary there's barely a trickle of enemies. They could have cut it entirely without anyone noticing.

>Personally I don't remember how a single Ring was capable of wiping out most of the Flood, but apparently it worked with its destruction. Humanity creates a truce with the Elites, and the Master Chief goes MIA at the end of Halo 3.
If I remember right the general plot beats for that part are
>Covenant fight the UNSC/Elites to race to the control room
>Gravemind on High Charity crashes on the Ark
>Flood and the Chief/Arbie stop Truth from firing all the rings throughout the galaxy
>UNSC/Elites escape on Elite ships
>Chief/Arbie enter High Charity and recover Cortana
>The Ark automates to build a localized ring in that little section of space to wipe out the flood
>Chief/Arbie fire it, causes the ark to self destruct because it wasn't ready for a full launch
>Flood die, Chief goes to sleep
Somewhere between Halo 1 and Halo 3 they seemingly retconned/clarified that Halo kills the Flood's food AND anything more advanced than the basic infection spores.
This is notably not the entirety of the flood either, as there are new graveminds found in Halo Wars as well as unexplored sections of the galaxy that are totally lost to them

>>
>>746064597

>>
>>746065227
well they wanted the cod playerbase one way or another, mlg or casual, they did both and failed
>>
>>746063772
>Why does Halo need to "evolve" into something that it's not?

every halo is different. they all evolved. but the hatred of Cod seemed to pop up once Halo 3 starting losing popularity to CoD because 3 was boring.

Halo 1 had fall damage, health packs, a goofy assortment of weapons that were a lot of fun but more of a party game.
Halo 2 added online multiplayer, vehicle destruction, lock on rockets, deleted the assault rifle, turned the magnum into the BR, dual wielding, removed fall damage, removed health packs. it was one of the first games that added objects with physics, so you could push boxes around to block doorways, like on Waterworks.
Halo 3 added more grenades, added deployable equipment, detachable turrets, 1 shot kill spartan lasers and missile pods, Forge, a Theater Mode, changed how they designed maps which impacted how combat felt.
Reach, more anti vehicle weapons with plasma canons, emp triggerable grenade launcher, loadouts, armor abilities that further disrupted the flow of combat.

the gameplay was always changing
>>
>>746065275
They didn't do that at all for 4.
>>
>>746065285
No Halo game is exactly like the last but all of Bungie's Halo games felt more like they were natural building blocks on top of each other (yes, even Reach) because the core gameplay of long time to kill, slow movement, and a focus on map control with heavy grenade use and power weapons stayed the same.
>>
Halo has been on the decline for like 16 years. At this point I watch the first gameplay trailer of every new one, confirm that they still haven’t gotten rid of sprint, and ignore the game for the rest of its lifecycle.
>>
>>746065230

everyone had a pistol and the movement was just slidy enough and terrain varied enough to balance things out. On smaller maps other weapons were fine.

Halo 2's maps balanced the weapons
>>
>>746065285
All of these (with reach being the only one questionable) play the same, but with a different coat of paint, some gimmicks here and there but at heart it's the same game, you see it and think "that's Halo's gameplay"
Kinda like how CS hasn't changed mechanically since 1.6
>>
>>746065418
Halo 1's TTK was extremely fast.
>>
>>746065503
And? You still have a volley fire vs a volley fire of precision guns fighting for power weapons and map control as basic halo gameplay
When you got tired of it you played AR starts or wacky playlists with other weapons
>>
>>746065553
You have a point for 2 and 3 being very close, but no other game in the series plays like CE.
>>
>>746065668

CE is my favorite mp and I agree in some parts that it's different from 2/3 but not that much that it's a completely different game
The things that stand out to me more is the fixed item spawn, quicker ttk, and most weapons feeling beefier than the sequels
It's mechanically the same, you just have to account for some things differently, this is mostly due to the engine it's running and was not by design

The trilogy are all party games that are simple to pick up, hard to master, with emergent high level play. Classic Halo is unique because no clone attempt or influenced game has been able to replicate its specific mechanical appeal, not even the modern Halo games. While most FPS are about speed and/or precision, parkour laser-tag or with asymmetrical base traits (classes/loadouts/etc), Halo is a methodical experience. Combat situations tend to last longer, sustained engagements are its pocket. Halofags are embarrassed that they are baby’s first fps, a party game that’s slow and simple, but that’s precisely where the magic is. It’s the smash bros of fps.
>>
>>746066061
>It's mechanically the same
Not quite. Melee doesn't lunge, grenades come to rest before they explode, health doesn't regenerate, you have much more health, the physics are completely different, the minimum splatter damage is 5000, the pistol's autoaim doesn't pull a bullet up to the head if you aim at the chest, and many smaller differences that make it feel like a completely different game.
>>
>>746065694
>And?

if the terrain is more varied, you have more areas to use other options. though halo 3 still has the problem of other weapons not being great. so even if it had better maps, the weapons would be an issue. 1 also had indestructible vehicles that could offer some counter to the pistol. And halo 2 had cover more readily available to drive behind. if you want to play firing line simulator all games will cater to your interest.
>>
343 is one of the most incompetent, out of touch developers of all time. Every release is a disaster.
>>
>>746066265
In the grand scheme of things those are just details and were like that because of the engine limitations of the time
Kinda like how the smash series plays the same after all this time, but the original games had a lot of weird gimmicks

Halo's basic mp is basically "I fight for a position in the map or a powerweapon using whatever items I have in my disposal, I try to kill my enemies in the least amount of time possible, I throw nades were I think they might be or might go, I use my teammates to control the map and try not to be left alone because playing solo can just feed kills"
Sort of that can be translated into the CE 2 and 3's gameplay
>>
>>746066697
Yeah, if you ignore all the differences then the games are pretty similar.
>>
>>746053976
>Messed up the artstyle
>Changed the AI to be worse, dumber and more annoying behaviors
>Added sprint and it’s such a bad fit for the game they let you turn it off in the settings and to mitigate its influence any damage taken stutters you out of sprint
>worse voice performances
>marvelesque prequel missions complete with a girlboss oc
>no Halo CE MP AGAIN
>only two player splitscreen in person
>no theater mode
>assault rifle didn’t work on release, had to patch it to function as intended
>>
Bungie hit gold with Halo CE but wasn't able to actually improve on the formula, just doing the same thing while degrading very gradually by nerfing guns and making the plot dumber and less mysterious. The sequels had a lot of cool online features, but they balanced the gun out of the game by pandering to MLG kiddos.

Never played the 343 games but it seems it was just them trying to recycle ideas without actually improving or anything new, and eventually removing most of the cool online modes. It seems the problem is that they were afraid of doing something unique, without realizing that the Halo formula already exhausted itself in Halo 2.
>>
>>746066875

1 and 2 are classics, Doom boomers can seethe all they want but Halo wasn't the formulaic downfall of FPS's they claim it to be. 3, ODST and Reach are the only good "modern" Halo games.
Reach was weird with some of its design choices (sprint being an ability was fucking retarded and hunker down shield was extremely gimmicky) but you could see some creative ideas.

4 was an attempt at fixing Reach's bizarre game mechanics but fell very flat as it still had an identity crisis on what the fuck it wanted to cater too. 5 is irredeemable garbage and essentially the final nail in the coffin for the franchise. Infinite at launch simply wasn't worth playing.

Halo CE aged like wine and Bungie, along with 343, have always self-referenced it with Halo 3, Reach, Halo 4, Infinite, Campaign Evolved

It's so funny that Halo was used to advertise the NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS and then that graphics card literally couldn't run Halo. Most GPUs were intentionally gimped out of Shader Model 2.0 and couldn't play Halo PC with specular highlights and bumpmapping. Gearbox had to potato-ify or remove many of the graphical effects when they ported the game to PC. Gearbox needed to write a fixed function renderer to support older 3D cards. Shaders had to be toned down for DX8 back then, the PC DirectX lacked a ton of calls present on the Og Xbox's DirectX.

Reach's poor map design built upon 3's poor map design. the dmr wouldnt have been an issue if it existed on Halo 2 maps. It wasnt an issue at all in 5. Bad maps and a poor selection of weapons hurt 3 and Reach. It took until Reach and the absurdity of Armor lock and equipable active camo for it to become obvious. But by then all the blame was placed on armor lock.

bungie was a creatively bankrupt studio. im glad they went on to release Destiny with a 1/4 finished campaign with no story.

SAGE MERRILL

https://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2010/03/31/exclusive-interview-on-the-halo-reach-sandbox.aspx

MERRILL: Well there’s the notable absence of the battle rifle. The DMR is definitely intended to replace the BR. We didn’t want to create another “one gun to rule them all” which is what the battle rifle had become. We want to push the player to a particular play style based on distance and which weapon is being used. We’ve turned the skill requirements up in a lot of ways and the DMR is going to require a bit more precision (and less luck on account of a burst-fire spread) than the BR did.

In general we’ve tried to refine the sandbox, focusing on specific roles and range filled by the weapons that are left so each has a purpose. As a result, the SMG is also gone. There are already superior weapons in that range and the SMG is just a s------- version of the assault rifle. And without dual wielding, the SMG has even less of a purpose.

Every returning weapon will feel a little different. The entire damage model for the Spartan has changed so every weapon has shifted some to account for that.

One of the biggest changes is how the shield barrier and transition state is being handled. Previously you could get a headshot through shields – if your opponent had 10 points of shields and you did 15 points of damage, the remaining 5 points would bleed over to the head. That is no longer the case in Reach.

MERRILL: Reach still plays like Halo, but armor abilities change the game so much. People will be surprised how much they miss them when the beta ends and they go back to Halo 3 and you can’t Sprint or jetpack or Armor Lock. They’ll be surprised at how well the abilities work in combat. We’re pretty happy about the results there.
>>
>>746067784
The largest common problem with those games' maps is that they are either way too open or way too enclosed, with poor item placement, which leads to stagnant matches at a higher level. Bungie were also really proud of shield doors for some reason, so they shoved those onto a bunch of Halo 3 maps and they were just awful. Reach has a lot of maps that are designed to be used with specific abilities, and suck to get around on when you select something else. Likewise, some of the maps with a more classic design completely break with certain abilities in play(the jetpack completely removing the interaction between rockets and sniper at the start of matches on Reflection).
Everything is just a step down from what came in Halo 2.
>>

I still don't understand why they had to nerf the AR so much in Reach. The DMR was a tiny bit slower than the BR, so keeping the AR's stats the same as they were in Halo 3 would have given it a purpose and allow it to overpower the DMR up close.

i never had a problem with recoil/bloom
there simply was no need to make a better br when i already felt gameplay shifted to heavily toward mid to long range combat

>>746067784
>largely considered Halo at its best

im in the minority. i noticed that after the popularity of MLG & the BR in halo 2, the distances between cover increase, and the amount of extra paths and cover reduced. Valhalla is a perfect example since its supposed to be the next version of blood gulch. Instead of teleporters teleporting you somewhere else next to boulders or trees&a cave entrance, you are thrown slowly to the middle of the map high enough to be seen by most of the map. Skeet shooting players into an open field or into a riverbed bucket to be put down. The center of the map can see just about everything. the field of boulders is removed for an empty field. And the elevated path with a pillar leading to a cave is replaced with a downed pelican with narrow caves on either side of the pelican. one cave can be looked through from the center hill, making it easy to choke point yourself. the other cave entrance everyone can see you run half a mile to enter it. the Spartan laser is in the center. And each base has a rocket pod and energy drainer. leaving the center covered in anti vehicle weapons and BRs. And if you dont have a BR or sniper rifle on a map like that, you might as well be unarmed. this style of map gets repeated to make sure vehicles and close quarters combat isnt effective. im not sure if i mentioned this earlier, but it reinforces another style of gameplay of grenade spam to clear rooms because every is equipped for mid to long range combat and the short to mid range weapons are simply not consistent enough to be worth using. Reach further builds upon this
reduce the distance between cover, increase the damage and effective range of some of the mid to close range weapons, add some boxes, boulders, or elevation shifts and the issue of br dominance would go away
>>
>>746067784
Reach map design is pretty bad by halo standards and 3 is a major downgrade from 2

DMR bloom was highly flawed. There wasn't enough punishment for ignoring it, you could regularly punish people who are playing by the "rules." It didn't bloom enough or reset fast enough to actually enforce any real cadence.
>>
>>746069592
It turned into a slot machine. You got rewarded for rolling the dice more than you got punished, so optimal play was spamming the trigger, but there was still the chance that the gun flubs out on you.

>There wasn't enough punishment for ignoring it,

this was something that was improved upon in 5, but for other weapons. where pacing your shots to maintain precision helped add extra purpose and functionality to weapons that were previously out classed at range.

it had to be done. halo 5's story hurt people's feelings. so they did a big work around to kill off characters in books and comics so they could buy a new cortana toy and make an entire campaign for cortana to apologize. the rampant cortana fragment in control of forerunner weapons blew up a planet and suddenly learned about forgiveness and kindness and while totally in character, allowed herself to be destroyed.

I'm convinced the real Halo 2 would've been awesome for this world at this point, even for back then. They aimed for the stars & the more that comes out, the more it seems like they really could've made one of the best games ever even better. I'll always enjoy Halo 2 but the game that could've been will always loom over it a bit.

I remember not being sure about what was going on back in the day as well but I think the player isn't supposed to know at that point. None of the human characters know either. Miranda just says that the covenant started digging in Africa. When the portal first opens, the commander thinks they activated the rings.
It probably gets explained in literature somewhere but I think the forerunner ship used to escape High Charity was needed to open the portal to get to the ark. Or maybe that was just was just coincidence.

In Joe Staten lore, it was the Prophets who were reverse engineering Forerunner tech, and convinced the Elites to genocide the humans and serve them.

Only with the Dreadnought and it's arsenal were the San'Shyuum able to put up a real fight against the Sangheili.

A fragment of Mendicant Bias managed to escape his confinement, get into the ship's systems, and leave. He had hoped to go to Earth and help Humanity, but ended up crashing on the San'Shyuum (Prophets) homeworld.

With it, the prophets traveled the stars, locating other Forerunner artifacts and eventually meeting the Sangheili. Only with the Dreadnought and it's arsenal were the San'Shyuum able to put up a real fight against the Sangheili.

Millenia later, in 2525, the fragment "woke up" and tried to detach the ship from High Charity to complete his task. In the process, he revealed to 3 San'Shyuum, later the 3 High Prophets we know from Halo 2, that Humanity was meant to inherit the Forerunner legacy. With the help of some Lekgolo, the San'Shyuum disconnected MB from the Dreadnought's systems and, in order to hide the truth they just learned, started the Human-Covenant War.

There is a deleted scene where the Prophets explain the Writ of Union between Prophets/Elites to Arbiter.

Anyone think the inconsistency in the art design eventually started to hurt the series? Even during the Bungie era they could be fairly inconsistent with what they seemed to actually want. Take the Brutes for instance. They got a pretty cool design imo for the most part but not always. The chieftains look badass as an enemy design while in Infinite you got well, Craig...

Its not just the art either though. The Brutes as an enemy type should have been a lot stronger. They look huge and intimidating but in actual combat in the games they aren't all that scary at all. They should have made them a lot tougher to take down with better and stronger armor. I guess made some of their other weaponry and tactics better during combat to. I think they needed a faster more agile covenant ally to back them up and make up for the lack of Elites as well.

The Elites were like the total package enemy type for Halo. Due to story reasons though they had to pivot away from that. They never got properly replaced as THE ENEMY type in my eyes. Also one last thing is the grunts designs have always changed game to game until 343 got their hands on them and turned them into giant ugly toad looking things.

Gears though unlike Halo had way more consistency in its style from game to game. Halo lacked in this regard.

100k years ago the flood was fucking up the entire galaxy and so the forerunners built the rings to kill complex organisms and starve it
millenia later covenant races develop on planets that had forerunner artifacts that they studied and came to the conclusion they had developed the rings to leave the mortal world, go to heaven and become gods, the covenant forms a religion around it spending centuries scouring the galaxy for more info

meanwhile, around the year 2500, humanity had a bunch of planetary colonies, but they were becoming increasingly rebellious and demanding autonomy, leading to insurrections and terrorist attacks
earth starts ramping up its military, the spartan program in particular tries to create super sneaky fuckers to put down the rebellions from within

2525 a convenant ship discovers humanity for the first time, but their sensors mark every human as "forerunner," convenant leadership freaks out because this debunks the idea of the great journey, they silence it and order humanity destroyed so that the covenant doesn't fall apart, human covenant war begins

by 2553 humanity is in abysmal shape, half of all humans dead, they come up with a high risk plan to kidnap a covenant prophet and negotiate an end to the war, they buld cortana as a top level codebreaking AI, keyes as their top captain, pillar of autumn as their ship, spartans on board
then reach, earth's most important colony, gets invaded just as the operation begins, spartans deploy to planet, chief stays in space, pillar escapes destruction (but instead of a random jump as was protocol, cortana mindlessly used some mysterious coordinates she found on a forerunner artifact she was studying)

halo 1 begins

>Halo ended with Reach

It was actually supposed to end with Halo 2. Halo 3 is just the last levels stretched out into the third game.

>Joe Staten
We had this great third act wrap-up of Master Chief and the Arbiter coming together and defeating the Prophets and discovering The Ark, and this deeper secret inside of it. But it was so above what we could possibly do from a production point of view that it fell apart. There was meant to be a mission where you were fighting on top of The Ark, like it was uncovered like it is in Halo 3. So you’re fighting multiple Scarabs, going through a trench run to make your way into it. We had it all modeled out, we had it all massed out, this big structure with Scarabs sitting on top of it.

>Marty O’Donnell
All that stuff was going to culminate and end on Earth. And it was going to be the end of Halo. We had no plans to do another game after this. It was like: this is how Halo ends.

Contact Harvest, Cole Protocol, Halo Wars, ODST, and Reach were just prequels. Halo's main story was over.

343 and Halo Studios are just Microsoft Employees. Bungie had to fight to not be absorbed into the rest of Microsoft when they were acquired in 2000.

>Bungie were negotiating to leave Microsoft since 2003 because they didn't like the profit sharing of Halo and were told "Microsoft doesn't negotiate with its employees". Devs were considering leaving Bungie to start their own company if they didn't have better profit sharing for Halo 2, with Halo 2 being the last Halo game by Bungie
>Phil Spencer: “At the time they had big ambitions. They had sold their business for a certain amount of money. They saw what Halo turned into. And it's like, ‘OK, Microsoft benefited more than Bungie did from the success of Halo.’ There's no other story that can be written there.”

in 343's lore humanity wasn't a bunch of primates, but an advanced civilization just behind the forerunners, and allegedly, humanity had come up with a way to resist the flood through genetic modifications and sacrificing themselves

you dont understand what you are complaining about.

You played Warzone Firefight which was PVE only. It wouldnt be pay to win.
And in the other Warzone modes, just like firefight, the NPCs are consistently dropping special weapons you can pick up. Eventually you learn the composition of enemy waves and the weapons they drop and you plan around it.
And from all warzone missions, they rewarded the player with enough req points to open packs after each mission, eventually providing you a nearly limitless supply of weapons and vehicles to call in while unlocking tons of armor, emblems, and other skins.

Almost like a battlepass but better. Instead of grinding XP for 5 rewards every few months, your xp is req points that can be converted into a random selection of cosmetics if youre into that. And if youre not,you can ignore the system entirely and play non warzone game modes, where you'd still earn Req Points.

>You don't have an argument
My argument is that Humans being Forerunners was not an interesting or good idea to begin with. I admit I have an aversion to everything that reeks of "extended universe". If they want a story to form part of the overall narrative. Make a game about it. But I digress.
Halo's story is very simple. Humans vs Aliens and throughout the games we see that Humanity is on its last legs and all hope rests on Master Chief's (You) shoulders. Is the typical Indomitable Human Spirit vs the indifferent cruelty of the universe story. It doesn't need more than that. Now granted, the idea of the original Halo was to explore this ancient alien world built by an unknown civilization so I can see the appeal of revealing the twist that it had been human all along. The problem is that the sequels geared more toward Space Opera than just the isolated story and that's when the twist loses its appeal.
Humans winning by their own merits is more appealing than them just "remembering" how to win. It could even tie into what the Forerunners saw in them. A species that could overcome even the worst odds.
>>
>>746077408
>My argument is that Humans being Forerunners was not an interesting or good idea to begin with
I'm biased because the first time I heard those hints I thought it was a bit lame, partly because I had read some very cringy "humanity fuck yeah" circlejerky stories but was willing to accept it (also I have a soft spot for dune tier galactic wide narratives and lovecraftian space horror which 343's retcons introduced)
>I admit I have an aversion to everything that reeks of "extended universe". If they want a story to form part of the overall narrative
you can't spoonfeed the game's audience on what the forerunners, flood, convenant and pre-historic humanity were in a handful of cutscenes, or gamers with the attention span of a goldfish start bitching about lore dumps
it's like saying the original call of duty should have had a 30 minute cinematic on the rise of fascism, the NSDAP and weimar republic to understand what the game was about, nobody would want that
I think the hidden terminals dotted around the games with extra lore for the people that were into it while not bothering the people who just want to shoot stuff and move on were a good compromise, especially halo 4 which made them animated so that the mouth breathers wouldn't whine about having to read

I agree with most everything you said, Halo 1 was a pretty good self contained story, 2 and 3 not so much but were well executed, reach was a meme, 4 5 should never have been made
overall I don't get the aversion people have for the books
>>

yeah, the older halo books written by eric nylund were genuine lore expansions, you didn't need to read them to understand the game, they just answered some of the backstory questions that a curious person could develop after playing the games
later books felt like required reading because 343 couldn't bother taking their time to develop their characters, that's on of the things that made the games so frustrating from a storytelling point of view

Yes. Xbox fanboys tried to sweep this under the rug as it was just a low risk training excersize for the studio with UE5. No. It can not be overstated how much of a blow this game. It shows 343/Halo Studios can not even remakes of old games with much smaller scope. It shows Microsoft won't be able to save Halo by transferring it to Playstation, the brand is dead. The multiplatform release is also just another deathblow for Xbox (not like they needed it, it is over for the brand since 2024).

You can do this for every Halo game. CE was 6 levels played back to front, The Library is one of the worst in FPS history. 1/3rd of the game is Forerunner hallways. 2's Arbiter missions were boring as fuck and it's unbalanced. Halo 3 was blatantly rushed and nothing happens for half the game. ODST was a meme DLC with gay romance drama no one cared about.

Halo boomer logic
>Noble Team in the most important and largest scale battle of the entire human covenant war = boring
>Chief walking around endless re used sci fi hallways spamming shotgun against flood = peak gaming
>>
>>746079506
2 was rushed and had to be redone in less than a year so they scrapped a shitload of stuff and then cobbled some things from the remains
iirc they originally wanted to have a lighting system similar to doom 3 with hard shadows and a gloomy environment but the xbox couldn't handle it and so that got dropped, which leads to the god awful textures and lighting they had to use in the end

I also heard microsoft was surprisingly permissive with 343, they apparently were aware of the "too many cooks" scenario and didn't want some c-sec retard messing with the creative process of their golden goose
then 343 took all that incredible autonomy and budgets and ran it into the ground

Millennials played it as kids, and they're good games. Doesn't mean everything that came afterwards was shit

What's wrong with Halo2's gameplay?
>>
>>746058093
Maybe if they'd understood halo wasn't a fucking squad based shooter people would have appreciated the work they did elsewhere in 5.
>>
>>746080181
That may not mean everything that came afterwards was shit, but that didn't stop everything that came afterwards from being shit anyway. The undeniable fact of the matter is that 343 has spent the last 15 years chasing trends, trying to get out from under bungie's shadow and generally hating on the legacy they were ostensibly formed to preserve and build on, and all of this is reflected in every game they've ever made. At this point, and uneducated millennial with no game dev or business management experience who played these games as a child would manage Halo better than these clowns.
>>
>>746080181
>games were NEVER good, you're just nostalgic for something that never happened
plenty of people have critiques about the original trilogy: halo 1 being repetitive, 2 being clearly unpolished and ending on a cliff hanger, or some people being disappointed on 3's story
the thing is those original games got the fundamentals correctly and only fucked up on some aspects, while later games were intrinsically flawed

People hated Halo 2 because:

>No AR
>No 3sk pistol
>Cut levels (Covenant Ship, Forerunner Tank, Earth Ark)
>Downgrades across the board to get the game to run on OG Xbox
>SMG starts
>Dual wielding
>Arbiter being playable
>Extremely linear, while openness is a hallmark of the series
>Flood aren't fun to fight
>Cliffhanger ending

>NOOBIFIED
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocyYwLCDyCU

People hated Halo 3 because:

>AR returns but is a total joke
>Battle Rifle is projectile in 3 but hitscan in 2
>melee lunge
>Demoting Arbiter to a glorified 2nd player controlled character
>Truth is a completely different character, no Michael Wincott
>Half of the campaign is filler
>Both Johnson's and Miranda's deaths made no sense. Marty'O Donnel wanted them dead for story beats
>Downgraded multiplayer compared to the high skill Halo 2 BXR
>Comparing Crow's Nest, inside a boring military base to any of Halo 2's exotic sci fi levels is just a joke
>Floodgate and Cortana are the worst levels in the franchise
>Worse maps than Halo 2
>Paying Xbox Live Gold to utilize P2P communications, which means that players are actually providing much of the heavy infrastructure ("game servers")
>Reticle not centered
>Low FOV
>Bungie Pro Subscriptions

People hated Reach because:

>Lee R Wilson retconned The Fall of Reach book
>No Blue Team and Chief
>Armor Abilities
>Armor Lock
>Reticle bloom
>Motion blur
>Multiplayer maps were campaign maps
>Forge World maps were laggy and lazy
>No BR
>MLG hated it
>No Ranking from 1 to 50
>22fps at times
>TU Update and Anniversary Playlist

People hated Halo 4 because:

>Doubled down on Reach's gameplay
>Didact and Librarian
>Humans aren't Forerunner
>Retcons
>Short campaign
>CoD clone with Infinity Slayer. No equal starts
>Spartan Ops, Halsey, Janus Key written by Brian Reed lol
>Less features than Reach despite releasing 2 years later
>Ugly lighting engine
>Forge Island is worse than Forge World

Yeah I was there for it and almost no one gave a shit about most of that.
Sure people complained here and there but they all still played the games and had a good time.
Other than 4, people did not like 4 in the slightest.

Infinite had probably the best gameplay out of any of the 343 games but it was so fucking undercooked it genuinely baffles me what the fuck they were doing for 7 years. Literally felt like an Alpha Build at release, and still does 5 years later.
>>
>>746080706
I played the beta and honestly it did feel really good (especially melee) but then it came out that UI limitations (developer retardation) was preventing them from adding a team slayer playlist. I saw the red flag and uninstalled right there.
>>
>>746080706
Most of the work on Infinite went into building the Slipspace engine, which they bafflingly decided to have short term contractor devs work with instead of having a dedicated team because Microsoft's management style is psychotic. So most of those years were literally wasted dev time of contractors reading documentation only to get fired and replaced before mastery could be achieved all in an effort to save a dime on the dollar because shareholder primacy.

I never said that, please learn how to read. I'm simply pointing out that its funny how the Halo games you played as a youngster seem to be the best and you have no introspection into why you might feel this way whatsoever, especially since I've already explained how they too have major issues.

Also the talk about fundamentals is nonsensical. Each Halo in the original trilogy was like the complete opposite of the one before it. Halo CE is mysterious and almost like an FPS adventure game, 2 is a space opera, then 3 is basically just a modern military shooter. The series was always reinventing itself.

it's okay but that's 95% because combat evolved was already a solid game. using reach as their code basis and not even attempting to actually import the tags and animations from CE in any way whatsoever so they could minimize the workload was just plain fuckin stupid, especially since they already imported flood and brute tags straight from halo 3 as is. there's the occasional creative decision that's neat, but it's buried in the compounding issues of outsourcing the majority of the project and then rushing something into a barely functional state before GTA6's release.

the hate is overblown, but it just ain't worth launch price. and i say this as mainly a campaign person versus PvP.
>>
You can't just grab retarded developers and tell them to make Halo.
Bungie wasn't an FPS only studio, they made RTS games and experimented with other genres like third person action, too. They were peak creatives and a lot of what they did was extremely unique which is why Halo turned out the way it did.

Copying Halo to make Halo simply doesn't work and you'd need real talent to bring it something special. Having Ensemble make Halo Wars was a good sign that Microsoft really didn't understand this.

Joe agreed that bringing back the flood in Halo 2 was a mistake

>Jaime Griesemer
I think if we just kept ourselves to the things we cut from Halo we would’ve been okay, but we didn’t do that. We tripled everything. The engine was torn completely apart—for the first year of Halo 2’s development, we couldn’t play it, which makes it impossible to make any real progress.

>Joe Staten
We didn’t want to churn out another copy of Halo. We wanted to do something unexpected and give people a view on the Halo world that they didn’t think they’d get, and make that really relevant for gameplay. On that score, I think Halo 2 succeeded pretty admirably.

>Marty O'Donnell
We had a great plot twist in Halo when you discover the Flood. We kept that secret from everybody—it was a wonderful moment and a great reversal, as everything you thought you knew now was different.

I told Joe that I didn’t see that in Halo 2. He replied, “It’s when you realize that you’re playing as the Arbiter.” But no, that’s not a plot twist. It just isn’t. I could never convince them it wasn’t. It wasn’t a good reversal; it was just a mechanic that was unsatisfying.

>Joe Staten
We wanted to explore more about the Flood itself, which was a challenge because I couldn’t quite wrap my brain around it. I couldn’t quite figure out how to make them a race you cared enough about. And I think you can see that in the Flood sandbox being more of the same. I mean, no knock on Jaime, as he spilled tons of blood on the project. But I don’t think we really ever got Halo 2’s Flood right in a way that anybody was satisfied with.
>>
I don't understand these critiques sometimes. Halo is still fun to play. It doesn't quite have the impact of the first 3 games but it's still a good time. I feel the same way about the Coalition's work with Gears of War.

coming up with a completely original game and fucking it up is one thing, but taking an existing and beloved game and remaking it will inevitably draw lots of comparisons, you'll have people dissecting the remake down to every line delivery since they can easily compare it to the original game
I'm reminded of the live action adaptations of avatar tla or deathnote; nobody asked for them and they jut copy pasted the original story but then executed them far worse or fucked with important aspects of the characters
I can't remember when's the last time I've seen a remake get praised, unless it is to turn a dogshit or unplayable original production into something better, and this isn't the case

Halo was and always should've remained military sci-fi rather than veering off into Marvelshit.
After Halo 3, they should've brought in some old school, autistic as fuck military sci-fi writer with a love of political thrillers; the kind of guy who wears tear away pants on a daily basis in case someone mentions Tom Clancy and told him 'Here's our big setting we just fucked up the shit out of. Balklanize it for us'
Halo 4-6 should've taken place in the reconstruction era, across at least a decade or more, dealing with the Elites and UNSC trying to get used to being on the same side while dealing with their respective civil wars at home.
Jumping immediately into 'Oh my science, Giganigger the Noseless (Who is NOT HUMAN, that was NEVER PLANNED, I WROTE FOR HALO, I AM NOT LYING OR MAD BECAUSE I DIDN'T LIKE THAT DIRECTION AND I'M GOING TO TAKE IT OUT ON ALL OF YOU; REEE-, ect, ect) woke up and he's got personal beef with humanity! Luckily John Spartan is here to save the day :)' is where shit completely off its meds and they had to keep finding new excuses to bring back both old characters and newer, bigger threats.

Mil-sci-fi should always be willing to change protagonists because every war is larger than even the single most important person in it. It lets you see things from different angles, which is the reason the Arbiter was genius in Halo 2, and both Reach & ODST are remembered fairly fondly.

like, it's not even "this is absolute dumpster fire garbage" tier bad, beneath it all is still a decent halo game, but nowadays if you aren't some 9/10 you're shit and people had the expectations that this was shitting itself the moment it showed itself off. i agree with some criticisms, the cutscenes are absolutely dreadful for pacing and animation, but people act like it's just the worst thing ever because they want something to be angry about.

it's okay so long as you go in expecting the dawn of standardization for console shooters. they got glitches and issues but you could do worse, and most people aren't hunting down emulation or old systems and copies to experience the games they were "meant to be" anymore since all those old servers are long dead now. plus steam MCC has modding.

honestly the biggest worry is if you're in it for the PvP because the netcode is jank overall, so any impressions you get from playing MCC should be factored as not reflecting how the original games play at all. and while there's people here with a whole list of glitches saved for problems that will never get fixed (because microsoft wanted to monetize the whole thing and got told to fuck off so they abandoned it), at the end of the day they're mostly playable enough and you probably won't notice any major issues casually unless you stumble into some weird shit.
or play h2 anniversary multiplayer, because they just sort of abandoned that fucker hard long before anything else.

>Halo Wars 2 was awesome
I very violently disagree, I think it fucking sucks actually.
The missions do not allow you to make the type of army you want, but constantly restrict the units you are allowed to build mission by mission. You can get the first reliable healing unit, an aircraft, and then never see her again in the next two missions.
Enemy AI has powerful destructive abilities, like summoning a vortex of death, they can spam whenever they want, anywhere they have vision, and there is a bug that hasn't been fixed to this day that makes their abilities move at twice the speed it should, making it unavoidable damage. Your own leader abilities cost resources and can be leveled up to be more effective, BUT leveling them up increases the costs to use them. Which is a drawback that honestly makes leveling certain abilities like the group heal not worth it.
The game LOVES ripping camera controls away from you to look at some bullshit objective, but DOES NOT pause the game or prevent damage from taking place. Forcing you to lose your entire army because you cannot react to enemies. God forbid you moved your force into the fog of war, because now they cannot even fight back but simply walk into enemy fire.
>"Oh did you have an optional objective to keep these two tanks alive you started with? Well you have to look at this elite with a sword right now. Doesn't matter that you can see fuel rod cannons shooting at the tanks right now."
The game ends on a no-build mission where you defend a point with units handed periodically to you. Which is so fucking gay and does not allow me to make my own army with all the tech you'd have in a fucking skirmish game.
Halo Wars 2 has one of the worst RTS campaigns I've ever played, and I cannot believe people glaze it so hard.

The levels are damn near 1:1 and the Reach AI isn't very good. Bungie masked it quite a bit in Reach by making them cheating bastards and forcing them to do certain things. So you're just fighting less fun Covenant on a level you already know.
The Flood levels aren't concerned with parity for some reason and it works in their favor. I can't imagine myself ever thinking "hmm I feel like replaying the level Halo in the remake" because I prefer fighting CE Covenant. the first game, halo CE was remade into an anniversary edition like +10 years ago with fancy graphics that I personally am not a fan of, but you can revert it to the original, and they preserved almost everything
halo 2 got a similar treatment, they didn't ruin anything
halo 3, reach and ODST are untouched
halo 4 is a thing that exists
overall you can still play the old games exactly how they were originally, they didn't fuck with them to their credit
it's just this latest attempt to remaking the first game (again) that they decided to start doing some questionable tweaks that has the community on an uproar
>>
>>746083347
>>Same soundtrack as the original
blessing and a curse. on one hand yeah they didn't actually fuck with the compositions which sound great, if still very 2001 compared to even later bungie games. on the other hand, Rock Anthem to Save The World is used for like, at least a third of the game's encounters and sequences for seemingly no reason but because they thought it should bookend every "cool moment".
plus i'm personally a little eyebrow raising at the fact that they made it sound like they were rearranging or remastering the game's soundtrack and the early previews just didn't have that yet - and then come the final version not a single song is different.
>>
>>746083458
Sounds perfect then. Being an old fuck, obviously I'll play on old grafix
>>
>>746083213
>the typical UE5 performance issues
Literally the smoothest UE5 game with lumen functional I've ever played. It's not hitching and having frame pacing issues. It's barely ever going below 60.
>>
>>746083505
>Literally the smoothest UE5 game
>It's barely ever going below 60 (meaning it still does go below 60)
lel
>>
>>746083342
then yeah, some minor quirks aside that you probably won't notice, campaign's the best side of the package to the point that it was largely the only thing that worked back in the 2014 release already. after the 2019 rework and major patches since then, i'd argue there's no reason to go back to the old versions now but authenticity, and some modders have done restoration efforts to boot. for a casual enjoyer, it's fiiiine. about the only thing really bothersome is the generic loading screens and losing the credits sequences of each game.
>>
>>746058093
Its really fucking grim
>>
>>746083505
It should be running fine at 120 in the current year, but you can't even manage a stable 120 with top shelf hardware. That's a massive performance issue.
>but you don't need 120
Irrelevant, it's indicative of a major step back in engine performance and dev optimisation. They're getting critiqued for it. They have literally no excuse given they have substantially more time, manpower and funding than Bungie did back in its day and still consistently come out with worse products even when all they have to do is copy 25 year old homework and spruce it up a bit.
>>
>>746083213
>the disinclusion of iconic lines
Which ones? I can only think of Cortana telling Spark to "sod off"

>sprint
Really? With Halo 1's notorious moonwalking you actually hate the ability to sprint? Fuck right off.

>MA5B magazine change for no reason
Because it's now more accurate. I mean, Bungie themselves literally changed it to 32 back in Halo 3 and kept the design going forward. The assault rifle was absolutely one of the worst weapons in the original game
>>
>>746083393

there’s this weird delay when swapping weapons that kept catching me out and getting me killed on legendary. i dont even really ever do the noob combo. even just switching from AR to pistol there was like a full 2 second delay before i could fire and it was getting me fucked up.
the elites and brutes with this “flick attack” with zero telegraphing insta killing me was bullshit too. in halo 1 the elites did this big upper body swing that looked like it would flatten a 7ft tall supersoldier. in this it’s like they swat a fly and it looks retarded and doesn't warrant the huge damage it does.
also, no firefight? fucking really?
im such a halo fanboy, i could almost forgive the dogshit PC performance, the flat and then overdone voice acting, cortana sounding completely out of character and instead sounding like the younger The Weapon from infinite, the DOGSHIT animations in cutscenes, and oh my god the Marvel Quip writing between harvey johnson and chief in the prequels (i was legit waiting for a “erhm… he’s right behind me, isnt he?!” bit). chief DOES NOT talk that much! it’s out of chatacter for him!!!
>>
>>746083213
>MA5B magazine change for no reason
I'll trade the 60 rounds for a 36 round AR that as actually competent at anything beyond point blank any day of the week.
>>
>>746083552
With an absolute fuck ton of enemies and effects on screen there is no newly released game in existence which won't dip below 60 for a second or two

Halo 1 on Xbox was fucking 30 fps with frequent dips below 30. I remember those days. Do you?
>>
>>746083738
>wtf legendary is hard?
>>
>>746083778
he is right that the elite mantis punch from reach is shit and the weapon swapping is sluggish. for some reason everything just feels "worse" despite the player technically having the highest default top speed in the series. shit, enemies for some reason fire every weapon faster than prior games and heroic/legendary add in enemy multipliers intended for co-op play that they accidentally left on for single, so now you're fighting upwards to twice the enemies that can now all kill you in a second. something about CER feels like they just threw a bunch of shit together and didn't have time to playtest any of it in the rush.

God I hate you people. You need 120 FPS to game properly? I grew up on stuff running at 20 and below and that was fine. 60 is definitely an acceptable benchmark, particularly for an easy singleplayer game

Sprinting only promotes degenerate play even in a small maps such as the context of halo CE.
Its a mechanic largely tied to cover garbage because it really only makes sense in its mediocre gameflow; it has always been a tumor in halo.

>Halo 1 on Xbox was fucking 30 fps with frequent dips below 30. I remember those days. Do you?

I do. Halo CE was beastly for 2001. The scale and complexity. You can't understate that.

As someone around at the time, people were struggling to get their top end cards with overclocking to run the maps at a decent frame rate and it wasn't uncommon to play the game at 20 FPS sometimes.

Halo PC was completely botched. Gearbox broke the shaders to make them faster on GPU's of the day, then they decided to support fixed function GPUs, did a terrible job at it, and then when hardly anyone was using fixed function GPUs anymore, they decided to release custom edition and make the graphics even worse for everyone

Bumpmaps in xbox and mcc are also in the p8-bump format as well whereas restored are 32-bit uncompressed. Chimera technically supports p8-bump now so they could be used directly. MCC matches Xbox because it uses the literal same tags (even bringing back the import settings bugs gearbox fixed).

The environment_reflection_bumped_radiosity shader doesn't get used in HPC and MCC (The pixel shader itself is also just a dummy shader). It actually does stuff on Xbox. It would affect shader_environment tags where the reflection type is set to bumped radiosity.

Halo CE modders have been trying to restore everything Gearbox broke for over 10 years. A lot of the MCC "fixes" were derived from their work.

>I re-imported every bumpmap with p8-bump turned on and changed settings where needed until the pixels matched the Xbox tags bit-for-bit then I imported them again with p8-bump turned off, for use on Halo PC. Any visual difference is because of not using p8-bump.
>bungie bitmap tags are not consistent some use the xgraphics compressor, others like the AR diffuse use the same compression as Halo PC

the thing is the suits and shareholders don't play video games. They just want money. Sweetbaby inc and other studios make them believe that adding woke shit will make them more money so they just do that. Not to mention the infection of woke faggots in studios and you have a feedback loop of people so far removed from normal people that you get games like veilguard or concord.

Look at Hogwarts Legacy or whatever, that sold like 40 million copies and the woke faggots tried to boycott it and they even put a tranny in that game, in the 1800s. I hate these people who destroy games by not just making white people games and then black people making black people games. Not every game needs to appeal to everyone

Halo CE is cursed

>Halo CE is NOT compatible with Xbox One or Series X backwards compatibility despite it being the Xbox killer app
>Gearbox port downgraded everything on an engine level and had to fit on a 700 MB CD (Xbox version is 3GB)
>Gearbox did break a lot of stuff. Like basing their code off the PAL version
>Combat Evolved Anniversary was rushed out in 7 months
>Halo MCC uses Gearbox port and not the original Xbox codebase
>343 spent 5 years trying to repair the botched Halo PC Gearbox port and Halo 2 Vista port within MCC but they were doomed from the start by using that codebase
>No 5.1 surround sound in MCC
>Halo 2 MCC is stuck in mono despite supporting 5.1 output & the cutscenes still operate on a fixed framerate despite the doubled tickrate which caused a lot of off-time effects/sounds due to rounding.

Just cause they finished the literal bottom of the barrel scraps they had left from CE does not make it some legitimate intended ending.
Reach is an ultimately pointless prequel, intentionally so.

I absolutely fucking love that one of the devs came out and said MW1 and MW2 were massive influences on Reach this week. I've copped so much shit over the years from people thinking Reach looking like that and playing like that was just a "coincidence, this was a natural progression for Halo".

Most of reaches additions sans a few don't really hold up as being the logical conclusion of trying to refine halo.
It just completely threw out how multiplayer worked.
