I've been getting the unspeakable urge to play ADoM again. I shouldn't because I've got multiple RPG campaigns running and have some big time sink games like Morrowind with the new TR but Christ I feel like some ADoM. Been at least a year, I'm probably due. Not sure what class I'll play, maybe I'll be a baby and play a paladin to ease myself back in all gentle-like

Roguelikes are just arcade games with more dip switches. Every run is another array of variables being set to make the same exact core gameplay feel unique. The genre only exists because people with attention issues only want novelty. They don't realize that a game can be static and still have lots of variation between sessions. It's good that roguelikes tend to be difficult and demand a lot from the player, but to suggest that every run is a new challenge is disingenuous.

whats a roguelike?

That's not a roguelike. That's some uncslop.
>>
>>746054497
I thought Roguelite was the term
These games arent like Rogue they just have permadeath with some permanent progression that carries over between runs

Streets of Rogue clears Binding of Isaac

>>746054835
Permadeath, randomness, runs and metaprogression is what defines a roguelike.

Jacob and Esau are the best characters in Isaac
schizobuilds that can be done with these two are insane

the only thing you need are either Options or altpath treasure room with quasi-options effect

That's a terminal, not a roguelike. Terminals can't be roguelikes.
>>
>>746054497
roguelikes are time wasters made by the devil to distract you from praying and growing as a person

A game that's like rogue.
>>
>>746065242
you didn't dissect it enough
actually it's a bunch of electromagnetic radiation emanated by a semiconductors hit by electrons, perceived by your cone cells which they send a message to your visual cortex in your brain
>>
>>746054497
does anyone remember that mobile roguelike card game with the horrible ms paint tier graphics that had a devil as the icon and came out years before the big card game roguelike craze?
>>
>>746054835
it's a crutch for when the developer is too bad/retarded to design a proper level so he leaves it up to random chance and calls it a feature when it generates an impossibe to beat iteration. retards eat this up and call it "replayability".
>>
>>746065291
You described a board game, not a video game. Board games aren't roguelikes.

The genre peaked already. Can't see how it could get any better.

>crypt of the necromancer
>hack and slash
>>
>>746067643
yeah i don't know what the maker of that image was thinking since crypt of the necrodancer actually is turn-based on a uniform grid of tiles
>>
>>746068967
>is turn-based
When the "turns" give you less than a second to make your decision and automatically pass without you if you don't input anything, it's not turn based, it's a real time game with a slow tick rate.
>>
>>746069298
at least to me if a game has turns (and it does, bard makes this very clear by removing the external time restriction) it is by definition turn-based, simple as
>>
>>746065291
Roguelike isn't a real genre.
>>
>>746070150
Okay, so then Binding of Isaac is also turn based, the turn timer is just 1/60 of a second. Got it!
>>
>>746054497
not a rogoelike
>>
>>746065291
>>746056970
"This is like rouge" does not mean "this is just like rouge in every single way possible."
>this game has permadeath and procedurally generated runs.
>"oh like in rouge?
Anyone without extreme levels of autism can understand this simple concept.
