It's still one of the best shooters to come out of that era. It went on for a bit too long tho
>>
I finished it and I had fun. It was also the first time I played a shooter after a decade.
>>
>>746062962
It is good. My only significant criticisms are that the final third of the base campaign is full of industrial tunnels that all blend together, and that Shelly is one of those boring "I sure love killing bad guys!" protags with weak lines and is nowhere near as charming as Duke, Wang, or Caleb (missed opportunity to make her a straight-faced Robocop/Dirty Harry parody to fit more inline with the other Build protags). Thankfully you can just turn her into a silent protag in the options menu.
The expansion is also good and is probably what the base campaign should have been, length-wise.

>>746066545
>Must have been a nightmare to make
Apparently by the time the expansion was finished, the main devs said they never wanted to make another game in Build/eduke again. On paper it was cool for the sake of authenticity, but it made development incredibly tedious, and several processes that could have been automated with a modern engine had to be done completely by hand with what they were already working with.

It's good though, apart from the shitty arsenal. I really like how enemies are actually dangerous here while not being obnoxiously hardcore like cultists in Blood. I wish the Citadel dev took notes from it to make the enemies at least a bit competent.
>>
>>746062962
It gets better towards the end. Really repetitive with the endless sewer levels though.
>>
>>746065848
It seems to be a law of nature that any sequel to a Build engine game is a letdown.
>>
The arrange campaign is what the game should've been from day 1.
>>
>>746067205
>never wanted to make another game in Build/eduke again
Same thing happened to Wrath. Who knew that using nearly 30 year old engines to make massive games compared to what said engines were built for is tedious as fuck but hey, you can pat yourself on the back and say you are hardcore by using a (heavily modified) old school engine.

I think you underestimate how impressionable George Broussard and rest of 3D Realms were when it came to movies and video games. They clearly had the success of Lara Croft and her big booba in the back of their minds and said "What if we had an action babe who was like Lara Croft....but looked like Pamela Anderson from Barb Wire?"
And even then, Duke and Lara as characters were shipped constantly by the industry at large to even the point where both Time to Kill and Zero Hour were inspired after TR on behest of 3D Realms and GT Interactive.

No. Truth is Dusk, Rise of The Triad remake, Amid Evil, and Prodeus were already good, but midwits still cried out

TtK absolutely. It's basically a Tomb Raider mod starring Duke. But Zero Hour has nothing in common with Lara's games except 3D enemies and environments. Jumping is way more video-gamey and you can control yourself way better, and there's no "put away your gun so you can mantle ledges" button either.

>>746062962
It's pretty mid, yeah. The game is mostly notable for running on an actual 30 year old engine.
>>
>>746064816
It seems too long because after a certain point you stop getting new weapons or seeing new enemies and start hearing Shelly's kill lines over and over. I also thought that while the game was highly detailed it also felt like it lacked visual clarity because there was just too much going on. There was just a ton of details covering everything and it felt distracting.

I still really liked the weapons, Shelly as a character, the setting. My biggest complaint is just the poor visuals and that seems like a problem that no longer affects only bigger budget games but now a lot of indie games feel the same way where there's just too much detail everywhere and too many particle effects going off and things like that.
>>
>>746080514
>It seems too long because after a certain point you stop getting new weapons or seeing new enemies and start hearing Shelly's kill lines over and over.
That's completely valid, and I agree. It needed more variety of weapons or enemies for how long it was, even if the levels are pretty and it's great to have a lot of game to play.
I don't really mind the overly-busy textures and level design, and though you're right it can result in kind of visual overload, I personally think this is a lesser deal. I never really died because I couldn't process what I was seeing, or anything.
>>
>>746079104
Serpent:Resurrection? Sunder? Back To Saturn X? There's a wide variety of "very long experiences" for people valuing different things (RPG autism, slaughter gameplay, more chill and conventional Doom adventure respectively). Probably more I'm forgetting. Plenty other megaWADs that aren't quite as ridiculously long but still longer than vast majority of commercial FPSes.
>>
>>746079104
Quake is unfun to play though, bad weapons (esp the shotguns), bullet sponge enemies.
>>
>>746080663
>I never really died because I couldn't process what I was seeing, or anything.
It didn't affect me much like that either, it just ends up feeling a bit fatiguing to look at I guess. Actual retro games leaving some areas less detailed felt like it balanced things out but it seems like modern game devs are afraid of that.
>>
>>746073869
>what went wrong with it?
It was made by Slipgate Ironworks, AKA the company with incredible oldschool graphic designers and the ABSOLUTE WORST GAMEPLAY DESIGNERS IN GAMING

every single one of their games looks great if you like retro 3D graphics, but every single one is fucking terrible to actually play. They did Graven and Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, as well as the Rise of the Triad 2013 game (which is probably their ugliest game because it's not trying to be retro, it just looks cheap)

I was really excited for Phantom Fury until I saw that they were developing it, I refuse to get tricked by them again, and the reviews are exactly what I thought they would be
>>
>>746073540
>>746074579
I've been messing with this for a couple of hours and the game just refuses to run with custom resolutions, any attempt at doing integer scaling so the sprites don't look like shit at 4:3 failed
>>
>>746080956
double barrel is fine
nailgun is fine
super nailgun is fine
rocket launcher is fun
Grenade launcher is fun

I'm gonna stop there because I realised the only gun I don't like is the default shotgun, but it's the pistol replacement anyway so who gives a shit?

bullet sponge enemies are a product of the time due to them being unable to include loads of enemies for fear of the game running like shit on 1996 PCs, but mod packs usually adjust this now to make the enemies weaker but more numerous because modern PCs can play Quake without issues now
>>
I am convince that the whole boomer shooter, uhh, boom, is just zoomers who never played an old school schooter, and not actually people who grew up with the originals.
There's a reason why Half-Life was such a hit, by then everyone was bored with circle strafing rocket launching enemies in arenas, and there isn't much more you can do with the formula.

I was big into this game but nowadays it's a blur. I remember being very frustrated at how boring the enemies are, and the overwhelming amount of items and weapons that are useless. Visibility was also bad, sprites are so thin and blend in with the environments.
Somehow retro devs still can't beat Doom 2's bestiary nearly 30 years later.
>>
>>746081765
>There's a reason why Half-Life was such a hit, by then everyone was bored with circle strafing rocket launching enemies in arenas
There's a reason why there was a revival: because it had been years since we got a game like that, and people were getting tired of the "no gameplay for 40 minutes whilst we set the scene" gimmick that everyone copied badly from Half-Life

The resurgence of boomer shooter was in response to 1) games becoming far too narratively focused and slow, and 2) the demographic of people who played them as kids now being 30+ and wanting something nostalgic
>>
>>746082156
They didn't learn 1 very important lesson from Duke 3D: Some basic enemies should have advanced mobility to make things interesting. And I don't just mean a couple enemy types who fly by default.
>>
>>746062962
It's very impressive for a Build engine game, but kinda soulless. No striking aesthetic, very safe and sanitized. The stages are all warehouses or sewers or whatever. The enemies snipe you from 100m away, so you just spam the revolver auto-aim. Beat the base game, didn't care for the DLC.

>circle strafing rocket launching enemies in arenas
Funnily enough you can still do that in HL1 in principle because IIRC the game doesn't tank your accuracy when moving while shooting. You don't benefit from this in practice because almost all enemies are hitscan, melee or homing.
Quake 1 and 2 also had a relative scarcity (1 moreso than 2) of conventional projectile attackers for whom moving to the side is all it takes to avoid damage.
Unreal was kinda strafe heavy since most enemies were projectile attackers, but the strafing was a lot more involved than in Doom because enemies were a lot more evasive while also leading their shots.
Really "circlestrafe while continuously bombarding enemies to win" is an overblown meme that barely applies to any retro FPS other than Doom engine games.

You mainly used the shotguns or you didn't play very much of Quake. the workhorse guns are the explosives and enemies die in two or three hits of those, faster than Doom monsters.

Funnily enough, I liked Boltgun but hated Ion Fury
Boltgun had bad levels, sure, but the guns were fucking amazing.
Ion Fury was just the same dudes in robes who died to a sneeze, so it didn't matter which gun you used and the revolver was usually the best option at all times. The shotgun sucked and that's a cardinal sin in a retro or throwback FPS.
>>
>>746084151
I know how to play Quake, but sometimes you're stuck fighting a death knight with a double barrel shotgun (or a group of them in a custom map) and it just fucking blows. Just running in and out of their range and dealing crappy damage, over and over.
>>
>>746073869
it's what happens when you initially try to parody the old duke nukem forever, then make it half-life, then also try to add little other shit in there, and then none of it is actually designed well. great visuals, but absolutely mediocre at best gameplay and combat feedback, which just gets worse and worse the higher you go in difficulty.

True, it happens, but so does shotgunning Barons occasionally in Doom. My biggest complaint with Quake are Spawns. They're shit enemies id Software admit to being a mistake but you still get people defending them or even going full contrarian and claiming they're fun.

I agree that boltguns weapons were pretty good, i also liked the toughness system it has. The taunt is fun.
Ion furys enemy variety isnt good either.

But everything else was better in IF. The levels are more fun to explore, as are the secrets. The music is pretty good.
The weapons, tools and powerups are very fun, even if Boltgun has it beat there.

IF running on the build engine gives it charm imo. BG runs on unreal engine.
>>
>>746062962
It was pretty good. As has been said, went on for a bit too long and some of the visuals/levels were a bit cluttered.

I do like that it felt more like an actual boomer shooter. Too many of them just add a bunch of movement mechanism to make it play like something completely different, or endlessly copy paste Serious Sam.

The game is decent, as decent as anything made with that piece-of-shit engine can be (eduke32).
The DLC is okay too, but I personally didn't have the patience to finish it. There's a part where you have to keep trying to climb some ladders on some cranes, and those little flying robots that shoot rockets spawn as you climb, and the whole thing is so absurdly broken and frustrating that I decided it wasn't worth putting myself through it.
It's time to let the build and its derivatives die once and for all. There's nothing to be gained by preserving that piece of shit.

Ion Fury's visuals are quite impressive given the limitations of the engine. It's the only thing about the game that's truly admirable, although it quickly starts to suffer from the common problems of games made with Build, pulling you out of those complex, realistic environments and shoving you into factories and complexes that are always much less interesting (but that's where you spend most of your time).

That's why Build games suck, actually. They never understood the arcade-style design you find in Doom 2 or Serious Sam, whose potential is truly revealed in custom content.
A game like Shadow Warrior feels more like a tactical game than an arcade game, where you need to take cover and attack at the right moment, eventually going wild with your overpowered weapons (to fight equally overpowered enemies). It's a valid type of gameplay, but there's only so far you can go in creating interesting situations with "complex" enemies that, at the end of the day, can't even handle the basic geometry of the levels.

Eh, I'd say you're overselling AD. The maps are good, but not "will blow your socks off" good. Besides, Wrath's map are even prettier, but they have a massive problem of being too fucking long. Like, 50+ minutes for a single map, every map.

Every FPS of the era failed to learn what made Doom 2's monsters so interesting and versatile. id didn't even reflect on it themselves with the two Quake games. Quake 1's entire cast, minus the basic soldiers, feel like they were meant to be an expansion upon Doom 2's roster. An expansion to a foundation that is totally absent.
>>
>>746094623
>Eh, I'd say you're overselling AD. The maps are good, but not "will blow your socks off" good.
I disagree, but then we're in a thread with people who think Ion Fury is great and Quake Brutalist Jam 3 is the pinnacle of Quake mapping so what do I know?

Their relative simplicity played well in their favor. Everything(outside of a couple instances) does 1 thing. It's predictable, but it means you can place a lot of different enemy combinations together to craft different fights. The number of the enemies also helps, everything has a well-defined role.
Other FPS try to complicate this by giving their monsters 2 or 4 kinds of action, but this restricts how you're able to use those enemies.
>>
>>746066289
I think merely being charmless isn't enough to constitute as a girlboss. She either has to emasculate men or have the writer present her as being in the right when she's clearly in the wrong. The Campaign Evolved bitch is a girlboss because she puts down Chief. Captain Marvel is a girlboss because she breaks a catcaller's wrist
>>
>>746092698
Yep, Duke enemies are nuanced as fuck. It's probably the main thing that separates it from Doom (aside from realistic environments)

>>746094283
Maybe I don't always want shallow arcade gameplay where all an enemy does is throw a fireball and need circle strafing. Doom 2 is fine for what it is, but I don't need or want every shooter to be Doom 2. Saying build games suck (and not just Redneck Rampage or Tekwar) is certainly an opinion though... a bad one.
>>
>>746099448
>Other FPS try to complicate this by giving their monsters 2 or 4 kinds of action
As they should. We aren't still living in 1994. Nobody is making Doom again, aside from Doom mappers in their freetime.
>>
>>746100792
Nah, they shouldn't. It's why none of those games end up being nearly as good as Doom.
>>
>>746102304
You will never experience Doom again for the first time. Nor should you. We already have Doom. Why should someone make Doom again?
>>
>>746102381
They don't have to, but they can pull design cues from Doom in order to improve their games. Serious Sam did it well enough.
>>
>>746102490
If you want the Doom experience, you should just play Doom wads. Having basic-ass enemies who only do literally 1 thing is suitable for a user map. Not any other full fucking game. Nobody should be that basic ever again. Not even Duke 3D, arguably Doom's closest neighbor.

Why? So you can make a bullet point on a list that says "lots of enemy behaviors? There's a reason why Doom has persisted all this time and continues to have unique gameplay created out of vanilla game logic. While the Build games are all completely dead, with maybe 1 big project over the last 30 years.

No you moron, so you can have enemy encounters that play out slightly differently on replays.

Who even thinks "Duke and build games are dead?" People still constantly talk about and replay them too. What, you think someone saw a lizard trooper activate his jetpack and begin flying instead of mindlessly walk and shoot, and go
