I think he starts to see 'all living things' in a blurred way. We saw the cutscene where the horrific homunculus/monster thing crawled out of the pod in Nibelheim. Sephiroth realises he was 'created,' and in a way, not particularly different to those monsters. Sephiroth is definitely incredibly assblasted before the whole lifestream thing, he burns Nibelheim down, and it's not until the climax of that event that Cloud launches him into the reactor core/life stream.

I think Sephiroth's 'safer' form show him as a symbiosis of Jenova in his pursuit to become a godly, ascended being.

Oh joy. Let's start from the beginning, what is Jenova?

The Cetra were the original stewards of The Planet. They were a nomadic race that walked the Planet cultivating the land and in turn the Planet would speak openly with them and allowing them free use of spirit energy. This was until a meteor crashed into the Northern Continent. Even as the Planet told the Cetra to stay away, the Cetra gathered onto the Northern Continent, trying to reduce the damage. What they didn't know is that they'd just been invaded.

Jenova is an alien parasite that was on the meteor. Jenova's chief ability is to mimic the dead. Jenova would disguise itself as Cetran loved ones to get close to them before feeding or infecting them. As the Cetra realized they were at war with an alien invader, they suddenly found themselves fighting their own people. Because Jenova could infect them and make them it's thralls. The war would expand and endanger the Planet so much that the Planet would create is squad of kaiju called WEAPON to try and fight this threat. But WEAPON would never be used. Because the Cetra would push Jenova back to the Northern Crater. But since Jenova was a foreign invade, it couldn't diffuse into the Lifestream, which means it can't die. So it was sealed for what was supposed to be forever. The Cetra's population would never recover and humans, who could not and didn't care to hear the voices of the Planet, would become the new rulers of the world.

Even playing the original as a kid I seemed to understand the plot better than OP but still had a lot questions and things that I was actively choosing not to overthink.
I guess in the 90s, big epic stories weren't a thing, the writers wouldn't have expected the game to be so significant that it would be getting dissected decades later.

The Remake series actually does a much better job with the story, trying to establish a clear progression and lore and giving the story more direction instead of spontaneity and plotholes. Even if they acheive some of this through new slop OC characters.

Fast forward 2000 years, Shinra has effectively taken over the world. During one of its expeditions, they stumble onto Jenova's corpse. Dr. Gast unknowingly confuses it as a Cetra because it's still in disguise. This leads to The Jenova Project. None of this matters. Because Jenova isn't an Ancient. And Dr. Gast wouldn't realize the horrible mistake he made until speaking with Ifalna. After learning what he just set loose, he quit Shinra and went into hiding with Ifalna, where they would conceive Aerith. But the damage had already been done. The Jenova Project was passed to Hojo and Hojo would use Jenova to conceive Sephiroth, a man who has Jenova's cells fused into him in the womb.

Maybe it's Sephiroth's natural superior ability, or the subconscious planetary knowledge Sephiroth gains in the lifestream in exchange for losing everything else, or that Cloud's subconscious might block the casting of the spell even if he knew how.

Jenova Synthesis is just another separated part of Jenova like the preceding Jenova battles were, and Jenova cells still reside within Sephiroth's Bizarro and Safer forms. Hence the physical form changes.

But then who is being selected as future monsters? Mako/Jenova infusing successes already become Soldier and failures become basic army.
What is the point of Jenova being here? Is she also being experimented on, or simply providing cells to the other monsters in the next room? If they are soldiers, they should already have received cells, do they need a constant supply? Anyway

Hojo's older experiments into mako-enhanced super soldiers. They lost their human form and rationality due to the extremely dense mako, so they got put in the mako tanks and just kind of forgotten about because Hojo is the type of jackass to go on to the next experiment without euthanizing his failures.

Anyone Hojo gets his hands on as research subjects. Some are delivered to him by Shinra as he requisitions them, others are just kidnapped. Hojo is worse than any monster on the planet.

Sephiroth specifically tells Zack/ Cloud
