How does someone spend years developing their game without any guarantee of popularity? So much time for potentially nothing? Never meeting anyone's mind.
>>
If you're doing it for popularity instead of doing it for your own self, then you have already lost
>>
I make games that I want to play if people want to buy them then great

passion project are done out of passion, not out of wanting money, that's just a bonus.
>>
Just make good games and they'll become popular. Otherwise you end up in pic related and nobody will even know you exist.
>>

that's stupid, there's plenty of good games which are not popular. popularity is now mostly due to marketing, which today is mostly "give the game to streamers and hope they like it"
>>
>>746068110
You should probably only make games when you finally notice what's missing on the market

If you're a /v/ermin you could always shill it here for free and anons will take care of re-shilling it for you. See Poke all Toads and Motorslice.
>>
It shouldn't matter to you at all.
There is hardly anything good out there, and it is only taken as good by lowering your expectations immensely.
It is better for things to exist well in your head than out badly.

uh more roguelike deckbuilders?
>>
You need a good network of people who are willing to shill your game for free, and then beyond that bribe streamers to play your game.
If you're Joe Shmoe and you just release your game with zero fanfare there's a 99.99% likelihood it will flop.
All those indie hits by "solo devs" were made by people with pre-existing connections to get their foot in the door. Otherwise you would have never heard of them.

Streamers does a lot too. either you pay them, you give give them to a shitload of smaller ones for free.
But yeah, weirdly enough, it was much easier 15-10 years ago to get players as an indie dev. Even if games were most of the time were way more simple.

That's every artist, every musician, every writer. There are people who have spent decades on a single piece of work that never went recognized.

It used to be a lot harder to get your game on a storefront as an indie dev, then they lowered the barrier to entry (e.g. Steam Direct) which flooded the market.

It's a shame, on one side it's super cool that people can easily publish their games, on the other there's also a millions of showelwares and things that aren't even games.
>>
>>746068471
No shit. If you're not marketing your game you deserve to fucking fail. There's plenty of idiot devs that think releasing on steam counts as marketing. If your game is marketed, has a demo, gets some discussion and STILL fails it's because your game isn't good.
