When you buy a game off steam they have to send you the game key by mail. This is a $5 extra charge per transaction. Unless you sign up for email delivery, where they send you the CD key there. Meaning when you buy a game it no longer allows you verify and install it right away.

In order to provide the supply chain economics a PS5 should cost well over $1000, but they are willing to eat all those costs because they take such a fat cut of the software sales. If a PS5 owner buys a few games Sony turns a profit and every game after is pure gravy. Valve want that same fat cut but with only the considerably simpler and lower cost to operate storefront and game client. They make an outsize profit on everything sold and threaten the publisher with delisting if you try and use those other platform's lower cut to sell for lower than you legitimately can on steam.
