Iicr, it was meant to be a large open world game for PS4/XBone but Bamco decided they wanted it for PS3/360 instead. It was also taking too long to develop, so the project was gutted and any premade assets were scrambled into whatever released. Allegedly ER uses some of those proto-DS2 concepts

lighting being an important mechanic
more story driven
couldn't actually deliver anything so he got banished to shadow realm and the assets that's already there are broken apart then put together with some glue and ductapes lying around
