That's not the problem. The problem is Square had been denying this to fan for over 2 decades. Fans were calling this shit out since the 90's with endless topics of full blown novels and detailed charts like someone was mapping out the stars, on how they're the same person and Square STILL told them, "LOL NOPE". What's going to happen if there ever was a FF8 remake is Square is going to try to make every single girl and npc do that same pose just to try to throw fans off than a surprise reveal at the last second of the game that both are the same(troll face), play part 3 of Final Fantasy 8 RE:make.

Rinoa and Ultimecia very obviously have parallels going on because they're both sorceresses, that doesn't necessarily mean they're the same person
>>
>>746075732
Giving you the opportunity to name an object that becomes significant to Rinoa and somehow affects the name of Ultimecia's GF wasn't even subtle.

There are even more significant details, which is more in-your-face in the original Japanese version.

Take my picture, it showcase the significance of the so-called “Commencement Room,” the first place we end up when Time Compression begins in the final disc. If you pay attention, you’ll notice it’s a recreation of the room in Deling City’s Presidential Residence.
You might think Ultimecia recreated it because it’s where she revealed herself to the world after possessing Edea, but that misses the key detail that it’s also where Rinoa fell in love with Squall. Rinoa herself says so in Disc 3:
>Japanese: 「その言葉がはじまりだったの」 (Sono kotoba ga hajimari datta no)
>Literal Translation: "Those words were the beginning."
>English Localization: "That's what started everything."

The "That's what started everything" localization sounds natural and conveys her feelings. However, by choosing the word "started," they inadvertently fuck it up for the final disc. In the Japanese script, this room is officially named:
>始まりの部屋 (Hajimari no heya)
>(The Room of Beginnings)

The recreation of this room during Time Compression exists because it’s where Rinoa fell in love with Squall. That’s why it appears, and that’s its significance in the game.
>>
I'm surprised that R=Utards don't use the fact that Seifer has a scar and a gunblade as evidence that he and Squall are actually the same person from alternate universes created through time travel. It's exactly the same type of reasoning.
>>
>>746076493
>It's exactly the same type of reasoning.
No, it isn’t. First, they exist at the same time as two different people. Second, we see them giving each other the scars. Third, that’s not comparable at all.

It could be the first thing I mentioned, sure, but that would mean ignoring the new name the room was given when it was recreated during Time Compression, as well as its link to the exchange between Squall and Rinoa in the flower field. This in a game shockfull of callbacks, big and small.

Then there’s the whole Griever angle, which Nojima, the scenario writer, really played up in theimania book. He devoted several pages to retelling moments from the game through other characters’ perspectives, even revealing that Rinoa often thought about emulating the lion on Squall’s ring during intense, life-or-death situations.

>If the parallels is because they're sorceress, why Adel and Edea doesn't share the same parallels?

We don't really know much about Adel. Anyway, I think the purpose is to show why Ultimecia went crazy and what her mindset is since Rinoa faces a lot of the same issues, but to also contrast with Rinoa since Rinoa's love for Squall is what kept her sane. The whole point is that Rinoa does NOT become ultimecia because of Squall

The R=U theory is more popular in Japan largely because the localization heavily altered much of Ultimecia’s dialogue, removing many potential “hints.” In the original Japanese version, Rinoa and Ultimecia echo each other’s words far more frequently.

Here's an example:
Rinoa: リノア「…やさしくない。やさしくない!」
Edea (Ultimecia): イデア「現実は優しくない。現実はまったく優しくない」

One possible translation that conveys the original intent could be:
Rinoa: "...That's not kind. Not kind at all!"
Edea (Ultimecia): "Reality is not kind. Reality is not kind at all."

Instead, the official localization went with this:
Rinoa: "...You're mean. MEANY!!!"
Edea (Ultimecia): "This is reality. No one can help you. Sit back and enjoy the show."

There are more than just those in the original Japanese script.
>>
>>746077075
Ultimecia was a sorceress from birth or early childhood, and was endlessly harassed for it due to her own future deeds being a historical record. Rinoa didn't become a sorceress until she was 17, and she had close friends to support her. Even the president of Esthar was cool with her. She got arrested one time, but probably would have been pardoned anyway thanks to said president even if her friends and lover didn't save her. Ultimecia never had anyone like that. That's the point. Rinoa COULD have been Ultimecia if she grew up in the same environment. But they're different people. Plus, nothing in the game suggests sorceresses can live for hundreds of years anyway.

Nojima addressed this decades ago. Rinoa doesn’t need to live for centuries because Time Compression can make her both immortal and stripped of her memories. That’s essentially what the prologue shows us, a version of her lost within Time Compression.

It’s never explained how that version of the character ended up there, and the whole “ring” dilemma only makes things more confusing, especially for Japanese fans.

Basically, it’s thought that there are two different versions of Rinoa in the game: one with a single ring on her necklace, seen in the prologue and ending cinematic, and another who eventually wears two rings on her necklace and travels with us throughout the game.

In this part of the game, the creators show how each sorceress’s power is represented by a distinct color. Rinoa has a blue aura, Ultimecia a purple one, and there’s also a vivid, pure red aura that isn’t tied to either of them.

This isn’t just a throwaway section, it was important enough for the devs to revisit and rework for the remaster. In the original PC port, a bug caused the red aura to turn completely black, so when working on the remaster, they made sure to fix it, even though it might have seemed like a minor issue.

Trust me, this is going somewhere... so follow my autism for a second.

Let’s say, for a moment, that Hyne’s aura is a vivid, pure red.

Mixing Hyne’s red aura with Rinoa’s blue aura would give you purple.

Coincidentally, during the final boss battle, when the last form appears and as it’s dying, its body is surrounded by a red aura. As it is defeated, the red aura shifts to a purplish hue, and finally to blue, as blue lights burst upward from its body.

I know that R=U fags are really adamant that the stuff they post makes it really obvious but to me it just makes the theory worse.
There's no reason that Rinoa would lose her memories of fighting Ultimecia, and eventually become her.
She's a Sorceress, she doesn't need to Junction GFs and won't suffer from the amnesia.
>but in game she still does
Ludonarrative dissonance: they wouldn't create an entirely new stat system just for Rinoa that only gets applied after a certain point in the game.
What could possibly happen after the events of the game that would lead to her becoming the enemy of the world? Who would ever fight against her and her friends?
It relies upon too many hypotheticals, and just makes no sense at all.

In that scene, Ultimecia is controlling Rinoa’s body and mind, while Laguna’s plan involves Ellone sending both Rinoa’s and Ultimecia’s consciousnesses to the past so they can possess the body and mind of a younger Adel. This essentially gives Ultimecia what she wants, allowing her to cast Time Compression, which the others plan to use as a way to reach her and defeat her.
So Ellone sends Rinoa and Ultimecia’s consciousnesses to the past—first the blue aura for Rinoa, then the purple aura for Ultimecia. Soon after, under Laguna’s direction, Ellone brings back only Rinoa’s consciousness, once again shown by the blue aura, clearly indicating that the blue aura represents Rinoa’s power.

That we don't know, but it is something clearly involving Time Compression. That whole prologue cinematic is key to understanding the game. Nojima and Nomura are adamant, that cinematics should represent what is in the game, and not just random stuffs. See every Kingdom Hearts cinematic, for example.

>See >>746077743. Nojima literally wrote the why and how
That doesn't say anything about Ultimecia, it's about Rinoa during Time Compression.
If the idea is that Ultimecia is a Rinoa whose memories were lost during Time Compression (while fighting Ultimecia), who then waited for Squall but he never showed up for some reason, and then she somehow ends up in a time before Ultimecia's rise in order to become her, it's legitimately too convoluted and yet again makes no sense.
Why does (this) Rinoa not meet Squall in Time Compression? Why does (this) Rinoa not get a happy ending?
That's what I mean about the hypotheticals.

Because that's the only way it makes sense.
If Ultimecia is created during Time Compression, then she would still end up back in time to before Time Compression is actually cast in order to cast it because that's what we see happen.
Ultimecia uses Time Compression (during) the game, it's not active the entire time.

So who ends up finding Squall in the Time Compression? It’s another Rinoa, and we can tell she’s different because the scene zooms in on her chest, showing that this version has two rings hanging from her necklace. This is the Rinoa who was part of our party.

I just shared my personal interpretation of that "inconsistency." What I question is why that the different models in several cinematics are a sign of a continuity error rather than something intentional, especially in a game that’s meticulous about small details?

Take for the example the whole aura thing, here's the game hammering down that Ultimecia is represented by purple aura in not only one, but several moments.

I don't understand why fans don't just make their own stories with this "they're the same person" concept. Sure, it's been done lots of times, so add your own spin to it.

Make your own Final Fantasy-ish story. Movies, books, video games. It's more productive than holding onto an interesting fan theory for a story that wrapped up decades ago.

I admit I’m not sure how the Rinoa from the prologue could be present before Time Compression was cast, but we do see her wandering through the “Commencement Room” in the prologue cinematic. We even see she reliving moments from the game past. Plus, there’s the Ultimania page Nojima wrote, which explains in text what was happening to that version of the character.

You keep saying things like "Rinoa from the prologue" as if it actually means something, when nobody has any reason to assume that the prologue aside from Squall and Seifer's duel isn't just a glorified trailer. I don't take Nojima's vagueposting about how "the prologue totally means something bro, I just won't tell you what" any more seriously than Nomura's or Toriyama's incoherent ramblings about their own games and I don't see why anyone should.

By the way, during the trippy sequence with the looping Rinoas, we see several scenes featuring Rinoa and even Seifer that Squall wouldn’t have seen during the game, either because he wasn’t present or because they’re unique to the ending cinematic.

>Plus, there’s the Ultimania page Nojima wrote, which explains in text what was happening to that version of the character.
My position is that that Rinoa is the party's Rinoa, the fact that the Ultimania text ispecifies the "lion ring" means she should have two rings in that prologue sequence because Rinoa always had her necklace ring before she got the lion ring.
Why are there two CGI cutscene Rinoa sporting different numbers of necklace rings? Legitimately I don't know, it doesn't make any sense for that to be some kind of hint that they're two different Rinoa's.
The Ultimania page says "lion ring", but the single ring CGI Rinoa's necklace bears her original ring not the lion ring.
Ulimania prologue text Rinoa is party Rinoa, not some vague hypothetical Ulti-Rinoa.

Yes, but technically no.
>>
Here is the truth.
It was heavily considered as an idea in early parts of story drafts, but they ultimately decided against it. The skeleton of that R=U draft remained since it didn't explicitly confirm anything and didn't need changing. Some people on the team really liked the idea and put/kept in little hints and nods to it. The support in side games is a nod to the popularity of the theory among fans.

It's also possible in this early draft that Quistis was originally intended to play Rinoa's part in the game and later Rinoa as we know her was designed and Quistis was made into a seperate character. This would explain why Ultimecia has her hairstyle rather than Rinoa's.

Because it isn’t, to the point where Nojima felt compelled to write an entire page explaining what was happening internally with Rinoa during the prologue cinematic. If it were just a glorified trailer, why go so far as to write a page detailing events from one of the character’s perspectives?

You guys keep attributing things to continuity error, or random nonsense when faced with something you guys can't explain away. This in a game where every small detail has a reason for it.

But she doesn't. The prologue cinematic unironically focus on her chest and we can see a single ring on it.
It might have easily happened after the game’s ending or something, when she returned Squall’s ring just as she had promised.
The game is constantly focusing on Rinoa's chest during the cinematics, to showcase the necklace. Not just once or twice. Do you think that was at for shit and giggles?

Because that was her punishment for playing god and thinking she could control time itself. You gain total power but your heart's desire never required it in the first place. The missing tile syndrome goes into overdrive so you begin to make poorly thought out decisions that only accumulate negative consequences while your heart's desire still remains outside your reach. This sunk cost fallacy keeps going until you experience a moment of clarity and realise how your initial desire was animalistic and petty in its nature and didn't require total power to achieve it in the first place. But it's too late. You caused too much suffering and now your former friends and allies have come to put you down like the rabid animal you are.

Did the page end with her meeting that someone? No, it ended with her opening her palm and sending a white feather into the rift in time, connecting the prologue to the ending cinematic.

After the feather lands on Squall's gloved hand, he sees a version of Rinoa forming in front of him, once again with a single ring on her necklace, and then the trippy sequence begins.

Nojima even references this sequence of events in the FF Moebius gacha event. That’s how Ultimecia makes her entrance in the game, a black feather appears, and right after, she materializes in front of the characters, mirroring the same movements and details, first showing her back before turning with a smile. Anon, please. Think about what you're saying for one second. You're making it sound like one version of Rinoa got fucked over during Time Compression purely due to karma for something she hadn't done, so she became Ultimecia after being separated from her friends, which happened as punishment for being Ultimecia. >Bro, c'mon.
The game is perfect as it is. There's no inconsistency. Everything loops back on itself. Every detail, no matter how small is significant.

Take for example this sequence of events. This is another place where the localizers fucked up. Nida uses a phrase that revolves around the verb "動かす" (ugokasu), which translates to "moving" something.

In Japanese, ugokasu carries an inherent double meaning. Metaphorically, it means to manage, direct, or run an organization (acting as the driving force or the boss). Literally, it means to physically operate or pilot a machine. Nida is proudly stating that he will become the man who "moves" the Garden. In his mind, he is declaring his ambition to eventually replace Cid as Headmaster, but the script is winking at the player because he is destined to literally pilot the building once it is able to take flight in the second Disc 2.

The official English localization instead went with:
>"(I'll be the ruler of this Garden someday!)"
To localize this in a way that feels completely natural to an English speaker while perfectly preserving the writer's intent, i'd go with something like:

>"(I'll be at the helm of this Garden someday!)"
>"(I'm going to be the one steering this Garden someday!)"
>"(I'll be the one running this Garden someday!)"
I personally like the first one best, since "At the helm" is a widely used English idiom for being the leader or director of an institution. However, it is fundamentally a nautical term for standing at the steering wheel of a ship.

I did. All of it makes sense if you consider the fact that Rinoa is a teenage girl who had a teenager moment while handling god-like powers. Teenagers aren't exactly known for making sound and well thought-out decisions. Her father made the right call for locking her up in her room.
>>

>There is no inconsistency.
You keep saying this to me, but you haven't actually refuted what I'm saying.
This whole time you've been insistent that the Ultimania prologue text features a Rinoa during Time Compression, who become Ultimecia after not meeting Squall (for some reason), but the Ultimania prologue text specifies that Rinoa has the "lion ring" which is a ring she puts on her necklace IN ADDITION to the ring she already had.
Please explain to me how I'm meant to believe Ultimania prologue Rinoa isn't the party's Rinoa under these parameters.
Now, just recently you've changed your tune to saying "it might easily happened after the game's ending or something...", but this begs the question of "If Rinoa is out of Time Compression and could give the ring back to Squall, how does she become Ultimecia all of a sudden?"
It doesn't make any sense.
Please explain it to me.
>>
>>746080986
If you have a Rinoa lost in Time Compression, unsure if she was there for an instant or forever, unable to recall her past, and unable to meet Squall, and then another Rinoa running around searching for Squall and able to meet him, it’s possible these are two different Rinoas. Adding to that, the differing number of rings each version is shown wearing, which stays consistent through several cinematics, makes the idea even more plausible.

Your only explanation for all that is it must be some continuity error or lazy model fuck up.
>>
>>746081160

This is all speculation and hypothetical.
Nowhere in any text is there said to be two different Rinoas.

Please explain to me how I'm meant to believe Ultimania prologue Rinoa isn't the party's Rinoa under these parameters.

>>746081307
>For the simple fact she wasn't the one to find Squall.
You don't know that, the scene never says she doesn't find him.
It says she waits for him as he wanders, not "she never finds him but another version of her does".
>Not to mention the cinematics making a distinction between Rinoa with 1 ring, and Rinoa with two rings.
The CGI Rinoa with only one ring only has her original ring, not the lion ring.
The Ultimania prologue specifies it's the "lion ring", not her normal original ring, and yet the CGI Rinoa with only one ring has the original ring?
Isn't that a literal inconsistency if they're meant to be the same?

Lets say they made the opening cinematic before they decided to give the character two rings for her necklace, so at that point they only had the model with a single ring on it. That could be an easy explanation for the incosistency.
But in the ending cinematic they show both the model with two rings, and the model with a single ring for the trippy sequence, all within the same ending cinematic.

>Is FFT:Advance the same as FFT and FFTA2 and or 3 diff games?
They are three different games. FFTA2 is the general sequel to FFTA, but FFT takes place far in the future of the Ivalice games, including FFTA and FFTA2. It's a bit cyclical due to the plots but explaining more is both spoilery and unnecessarily confusing.

>I also got those Mario: Rabbid games that are aparently XCom super lite, maybe I'll start there.
Yes, they are. It's remarkable how similar they are to XCOM. The chief difference is (aside from Mario and Rabbids/Rayman characters) the XCOM mechanics are simplified to 100%/50%/0% chances to hit, depending on the level of cover you have.

A parallel is still a parallel. The mirroring was very obviously deliberate, since FF8’s plot is filled with parallels/mirrors (Squall and Rinoa reflecting Laguna and Julia, Seifer being a direct contrast to Squall etc.). R=U is a product of people too dumb to understand the concept of parallels and symbolism.

Are there any other games similar to ff8 with it's dreamlike cozy atmosphere, likeable characters, occasional weird shit out of nowhere, dark and tragic underlayer, all this kind of stuff? I swear, the only game I know that came close to this was towelket 1, not even other final fantasies.
Ofc I mean jrpg/rpg.

Persona 4
>>
>>746087297
FF 6, 7, 9, and 10 (the old ones are good too but not as dark/tragic or weird)
All of Kingdom Hearts Collection but 1 will always be my favourite and everyone loves 2 the most.
Mother 1, Earthbound and Mother 3. They play like Dragon Quest clones so dont expect much gameplay wise no one talks about it because that.
Popolocrois Monogatari 1 and 2 underrated just got fan translations
Linda3 Again another weird translation game.
Chrono Trigger is a lot lighter but you should play it then play Chrono Cross (Just dont expect it to be like Trigger at all. It's the most cozy/tragic shit with amazing music)
Xenogears but the combat kinda becomes a slog but if you get into the story it doesnt matter.
Baten Kaitos 1 and 2 are underrated too
Terranigma
Nier Replicant/Automata

This, but you do need to play Trigger first.

This too, but anon is right it can get sloggish.

Can't vouch for the rest, although I did like Popolocrois. Chrono Cross is as close as you will get in the PSX era.

That's a retard who said that.
Cross is not a hate fest for Trigger fans, it's not even meant to be played as a proper "sequel" to begin with.

If Rinoa became immortal and lost her memories, then she’s effectively not Rinoa anymore. So, as expected, the reveal has no narrative weight, it’s a twist for the sake of a twist.
>>
>>746088193
>did that youtuber
Never trust a youtuber, I can't believe I even have to mention this. The issue with Cross is that everyone incorrectly assumed it was a direct sequel when it was actually more like a pseudo alternate future sequel mixed with "game in the same multiverse" kind of thing. It's hard to explain without giving any spoilers.

But anyway, CC is very close to FF8 in the exact way you described and asked for.

The real theory is Rinoa == Squall.
>rings
>face
>seifer bromance
Its really a tranny story and squalls fading memories are him transitioning with the surgeon (edea) making the final cut after disc 1. The old self replaced with the new self. Time compression is merely explaining the Squall/Rinoas fading memory of their past life and becoming one with the new.
>>
>>746072683
Seifer's used goods.

I’m convinced that any dislike towards VIII’s plot comes from the fact that VIII is written a lot more subtly (subtle by FF standards at least) than other FF games. Other FF games have as much subtlety as a Saturday morning cartoon, whereas VIII requires you to read into subtext more.

>ULTIMECIA TRIED TO KILL RINOA AND TOOK EXTRAORDINARY STEPS TO MAKE SURE SHE WOULD SUCCEED U ARE LOOKING TOO MUCH INTO IT.
You literally have a page from Ultimania written by the scenario writer where he established two facts:

Rinoa can't remember who she is, where she is, and why she is there for.
Rinoa doesn't know if she has been there for an instant or an eternity.

That can, theoretically, explain how Rinoa can live so long and as well her actions in the past as Ultimecia.

Reminder that in Japanese Rinoa and Ultimecia repeat the same words and phrases, obviously in different context but still. This doesn't happen, for example, with Edea once freed. Only Rinoa and Ultimecia. Same with the black and white feather motif.

>he needs to pull FF brave envictus lore out of his ass and smear that shit on the walls of the internet's insane asylum.
at this point just make it a Final Fantasy 8 multiverse where every atom that exists in it is both rinoa and ultimecia at the same time and neither one can die.
this discussion is veering into time traveling Mary Sue territory which only proves that anything tangentially related to FF8 is devoid of the human experience(fantasy and sci-fi is cool but keep that shit relatable, raise the stakes but keep the scope small enough, a characters death should be permanent)

thanks for proving that FF8 is inferior to FF7.

I jus added a page from the gatcha event written by Nojima to illustrate my point, but there is no real need for it since the game itself and the Ultimania can provide all the answers. What were Ultimecia's dying words, again? Something about the passage of time and losing...?

>denser than a turdnugget caught between a morbidly obese mans asscheeks being compressed into a diamond.
theres a certain point where i (and so should you) just dont give a fuck anymore because the story has lost all meaning and relevant plot and is meandering into overbearing plots fillid with quasi-intellectual axioms that has subjects, contexts and subtexts that are too detached from the human experience to even fathom.

this is why marvel movies went down the shitter the moment it was about multiverses instead of peter parker the neighborhood kid saving mary lee from the green goblin. people can understand the power disparity between a teenager and some supervillain than kicked the teenagers puppy with the teenager bridging the power gap between him and the villain through sheer determination, discipline and wits. but the moment you need to bring in vague shit like prophecies foretold destinies and antimatter colliding with turdnuggets in just the right angle people will stop giving a fuck.

this entire thread is lost in the sauce.

Has anyone else noticed that the plot of FFVIII is basically an early version of the plot of Kingdom Hearts? There’s a clear similarity between Squall and Rinoa’s relationship and Sora and Kairi’s, and with Union Cross introducing the Dandelions, it’s obvious that the Dandelions are SeeD, right down to using the same flower metaphor for their name.

>>746094842
This. There’s JUST enough there to imply that it was once a planned plot point. Why they changed it to be a parallel instead is anyone’s guess.
