I don't like the term "friendslop". The implication that "these games are slop because you need to have friends to play them" just reeks of being a psyop to me. It feels like an attempt to validate the increasingly antisocial tendencies of people in the gaming community.
>>
>The implication that
The implication is that it's a trend chasing genre that does mostly the same formula as something else.
>>
>>746075485
I always thought friendslop meant:
>it's fun with friends but otherwise wouldn't work as a concept for a videogame because the mechanics in themselves aren't fun, only the memories and moments you share/create with friends make the game fun

Basically any game can be friendslop
>>
>>746075551
Correct. Stuff like REPO has like an hour of content, it's just randomized. Playing with friends keeps it fresh and leads to shenanigans, and it's a good vehicle for that, especially when your friends are normalfags and can only play for a couple hours on the weekend or whatever.
However, you can have fun with friends doing basically anything, so that just makes it a shallow game that people only like because it's bite-sized and their friends play it.
>>
i thought it was due to how the games are meant to have any longevity. you hoof around with the novel concept with your friends for 20 hours and then none of you think about the game ever again. unlike a good singleplayer game where you'll want to come back in 5 years or whatever.
maybe it's almost like a callback to how multiplayer used to just be an addition to a singleplayer game, which is arguably not universal at all but you get where that idea comes from.

anyway, i havent had friends since i was 15 which was almost 15 years ago haha
>>
>>746075943
*aren't meant
*goof
>>
>>746075551

>>
>>746075551
Yes but also the idea of dismissing something fun because "it wouldn't be fun without friends" is silly.
Fun is fun.
>>
the hilarious thing is that even the most popular people around streamers I regularly see have their scheduled friendslop plans fall through and they end up playing atleast 60% of their time on these games solo, the absolute state of this genre lmao
>>
>>746076384
If its fun on its own then its not friendslop, is it?
>>
>>746075485
>videogame nerds are not terribly social people and thus tend to disparage social activities
blowing my mind here

here's an even edgier interpretation for you
historically speaking GAMES were almost exclusively a vehicle either for early learning or interpersonal interactions, that is to say anything above toddler-tier block-stacking activity of play (read as a noun) is multiplayer, be it chess or dice or cards
there is like what, solitaire? a game uniquely made for one player and called appropriately? crossword-esque puzzles? even those were created in like 18th century
but the advent of software and autonomous systems, one could consistently design and make intended for a single person only, because machines could act as competitors and arbiters alike, engaging with an unprecendented number of lonely nerds
now you can recall that one "brief history of videogames" image with teh cake is a lie and such, and then consider how bitter the most asocial of nerds might feel in a modern world where everything from shooters to assfaggots to indie nobodies are relying on the socially-aware masses and samey multiplayer modes
>>
>>746076384
I don't think it's dismissed. 'Friendslop' was an insult for all of ten minutes before it got adopted as a genuine, sincere, endearing term.
Like PEAK is a really solid well-designed game I say as a friendless who's never played it but it's still friendslop just because that's the word for it. Nothing deeper than that.
>>
>>746075485
You're taking it too seriously. It's just used as a genre name for repetitive co-op games now. It's neither negative or positive
>>
>>746075485
REPO sucks but Lethal Company and PEAK are great.
>>
>>746075485
Video games, like any hobby, fill up with people who don't want anything to do with the thing itself and are there for attention and other people.
>>
>>746075551
AKA the definition of GTA 6
>>
>>746075551
It is, and it's why most of the games called friendslop aren't actually as such. Friendslop games should be more of the lowest of the low. Stuff like the shallowest Unity multiplayer jumpscare garbage is precisely what you're describing.

Instead, the label gets put on games that genuinely are fun mechanically, but are hated by people who genuinely are just coping vis a vis Sour Grapes. Those who really get mad over their inability to find people to play them with. They were especially emboldened by that short fad over the past couple years to hate ALL multiplayer games (because people were tired of live service slop), which makes them especially mad that small fun little multiplayer experiences are now beloved.

(It also doesn't help that they then sometimes buy the games, try to play them on their own, don't have fun because they can't interact with half the mechanics, and then act like it's proof they're not mechanically fun because it didn't scale down to solo play)
>>
>>746075485
I refuse to ever play anything that has even optional multiplayer
video games are for getting away from the cancer that is other human beings
>>
>>746075942
fuck no. I played repo for 60 hours solo and I still cant get to lv20. Shit isnt easy. and the feeling of one slip up and it is all over makes it thrilling to play.
>>
>>746077379
same
If I even catch a whiff of "...and your friends can join in!" I now don't know whether it was designed around solo or that, and I don't want to risk playing a game mode the devs only support reluctantly.
>>
>>746076494
Do streamers even play these games? I know everyone says they do, but Twitch numbers for friendslop look kind of low and I only ever see those 30 minute edited videos pop up on youtube instead of those 4+ hour livestreams other games get. Granted I don't watch streams so my algorithms probably aren't geared towards them, but youtube still somehow knows when I play a friendslop game and recommends me videos about them.
>>
The saddest thing is the Steam forums of these games are full of kids who obviously have no IRL friends defending these games to the death and accusing anyone who criticises their lack of content/gameplay of having no friends.

A dev can drop a friendslop game, get a million sales, then completely disappear and offer no updates, and the kids in the forums will still defend him and say "Well he made it and made so much money he'll never have to work again so it makes sense he disappeared, this game costs less than a pizza so I don't care that I got scammed".

What the fuck is wrong with them?

>It feels like an attempt to validate the increasingly antisocial tendencies of people in the gaming community.
>increasingly
You have no idea what multiplayer gaming was like in the 90s and 00s.
You could say anything, find your server and friend group, and have a blast, making life long friends, little to no politics, everyone focused on the game and shared tips because nothing was 100% datamined.
I remember gaming clans, crazy how clans are completely obsolete.

The antisocial aspect of gaming has been at its max since 2014~ because every social situation with pretty much everyone is a landmine field of extremely divisive beliefs.

I don't really care much for the term friendslop, and prefer streamerslop instead. I think these games are low effort valueless games that exist only to be streamed in collabs to create content.
>>
friendslop is for people who spend all their time in discord calls.
>>
they are slop not because the focus is playing eith friends but because they are cobbled together low investment high reward wagers by game studios trying to get a semi-viral hit.
It became slop when everyone started to try and make the next big thing

Same way how rollslop became a thing as a result of copycats
>>
>>746080739

>>
>>746075485
It literally means a multiplayer game with no win condition that rolls credits, but it can be extended to mean games that exist only to provide background noise while you hang out with your friends

The only reason VR Chat hasn't taken over the fucking world yet is because they're too busy grooming kids to actually implement games

Videogames aren't social. You are a brown pig in the US who got psyop'd into thinking otherwise, which is why you're desperate for consensus and peer approval all the time like a fucking woman and there's a massive hole in your soul since journos stopped being your programmers, which you tried to replace with ecelebs, except it doesn't feel as authoritarian or sold as a whole lifestyle like coke crazed state asset Adam Sessler and others did in your horrid childhood, so you're left forever longing for that extent of submission and parasociality again. You're all the fucking same.

Friendslop is slop made for playing with friends. If you see anything else in that name that's you being autistic.
>>
>>746082162

Seriously? You used to have to go out to a designated social space to play videogames, and then early consoles had multiple controller ports specifically because they were designed for cooperative play.

Friendslop is fine. Short burst games to be enjoyed with a group of friends is a viable product. The question should be if it's streamslop and only appears to be fun because it's just a medium to hold the performance of a 3rd rate entertainer and a group of orbiters he rehearsed with.

I like Repo because its one of the few games I've played with my friends that made me physically die because I couldn't stop laughing
The perfectly cut "OH FU-" as he dashed ahead and jumped straight into a hole, after we spent a solid 5 minutes in the shop and van sorting out health because he died the previous round
>>
>>746075485
If it ain't fun with randoms, then it's friendslop and an objectively shitty game.
>>
>>746075485
>"these games are slop because you need to have friends to play them"
That's not the implication, the implication is that these games are slop but you can have fun with them when playing with friends.
None of those games are worth playing by yourself because the entire "fun" of them are the interactions and shitting your pants with your lads. Like what do you do solo in lethal company? Walk into a room, grab a box, walk out? Repeat 15 times? That's not real gameplay. But with friends you hear them screaming from another room as they're being raped, have someone fuck with doors from the ship to help you (or not), have to figure out if that's a mimic or your real friend, and it becomes fun - thus friendslop
>>
>>746085395
REPO is pretty good for it's physics-based gameplay shenanigans and the co-op it inspires.
Sadly we have "that guy" in our group that went and looked up all the guides so he could look cool in front of us all and tell us how to do things. We don't play REPO anymore (or any friendslop really).

Reminds me of this one time we played lethal company. I was behind my friend and he tried to make a jump (also had that OH FU- cutoff). He fell so I started laughing. I have played a lot of friendslop games and I think the term is very fair. When you're on your 5th friendslop game and you start to notice the patterns, you realise a lot of these games aren't good and your group drops them really fast even though you had fun - because it was time spent together.

Lethal Company was a massive hit, but it's objectively quite shit when you step back and look at what it is. Peak is at least well made with some simple, but good mechanics. Big Walk is probably the best friendslop there is because it has actual puzzles that turns it into a real game instead of a randomized "do the exact same shit over and over but it's fine because your friends are there too"

And do the people who are against the term really not notice how many of these are being pumped out? There's a new one every week which is the new hotness for a few days then nobody cares about it any more. This is why they're called slop. They're often thrown together, clearly unfinished, lazy products that are Fun With Friends.

But once in a blue moon one will actually be a good game.
>>
>>746075485
A game is friendslop if it's not fun unless you have a party together doing your usual random bullshit to make it fun. A game has to be fun and engaging both solo and with friends to not be friend slop.

Just like every other FOTM friendslop. Lethal Company, REPO, Peak, the two dozen identical "dig a hole with friends" shovelware "games" that flooded the market after one did just... okay, Machine Party, Meccha Chameleon, and now Big Walk. There's probably a few I can't recall because they're that forgettable.

Not all co-op games are friendslop but all friendslop games are co-op

It's been a real fun ride trying to define what friendslop "is".

If you want to go off the original tweet that started this whole thing it's any game that is like lethal company basically any game that tries to friend farm and specifically trying to get as many sales as possible by making sure all your friends buy it. You could argue reactions are part of it too or that the game is based on reactions. Social games exist but I wouldn't call Mario party friend slop.

I don't know it's kind of hard to define because the term is arbitrary these are all video games anyways.
>>
>>746076384
I mean if I were to recommend things like Repo, a group of people to play it with is borderline required to make it fun

Something about repo and lethal companies art style and gameplay just physically repulses me. Peak too.

RV there yet and big walk didn't really trigger this disgust because at least they are puzzle games and require solving unique challenges with a goal besides slapstick humor and arbitrary horror/screaming jumpscares.
>>
>>746092224
Nothing about the art styles bothered me, my issue with Lethal company was that it goes from "nothing happening" to "everyone is dead" near instantly, made worse by my friends insisting on filling it with as many mods as possible
Repo is pretty chill most of the time and actually encourages team work.
