>>746078002Final Fantasy as a series has, with few exceptions, always been trying to chase Hollywood trends. The series creator admitted this in many interviews. But the early games couldn't have FMVs, cutscenes and basically couldn't be like a movie. So they didn't suffer from those problems. As the series went on and they did develop the technology, they focused more and more on cutscenes/being like a movie. And you see the results of that. This doesn't just mean hours of cutscene/dialogue filler. Though that was becoming a problem by the late PS1 era. But also copying Hollywood's model of content. They were able to get away with copying Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Shounen anime and stuff because those are things people like. But then they started to try and be more realistic. And follow the design trends of stuff like Les Miserables, Game of Thrones, modern Disney Star Wars and so on. Stuff people didn't like the originals of. Let alone seeing Final Fantasy go down that route. On top of all this, they copied the worst thing about Hollywood. Catering to the investors rather than the consumers. Games were being made by committee to fill quotas. "Insert this character to appeal to [x] crowd. Insert this setting to fulfill [y] quota. Make the story more like [z] movie because it's popular." Etc.Basically, Final Fantasy became Disneyfied. Ironic since it's not Kingdom Hearts that did it. And Disney hated Kingdom Hearts until recently.

>>746078002They made combat slow as fuck. In most FF games, regular battles take 1-2 turns. FF12 slowed shit way down, and the series has stuck with this retarded design of "fewer fights that take longer" since. The FF7R games are better in that regard because once you really git gud, you can pretty easily end a lot of the small fights super fast, but they have the same core problem. FF became just slow as fuck to play, and then this was made worse as each new game takes like 5+ years to develop. It has a reputation as an "unc" franchise now for good reason.
>>746078002Enix got involved. 11 was the last true Square game. Everything else after has been unredeemable trash that's not turned much of a profit, which is why SE has had to do outsource cutscene work for other studios to pay the bills after they killed off their cashcows.
>>746079564Also moved away from anime style. Shocker, people who got into a JRPG wanted it to be more like a JRPG. Not a shitty WRPG.
>>746079696>Enix got involved. The Square and Enix branches don't interact with each other. Unless they specifically are asked to work on the game. Which funny enough, it's mostly the other way around. Internal Square teams were asked to work on Dragon Quest Heroes, X and XI. Only time the it went the other way was TriAce helping with FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns. TriAce is also a third party team so not really "enix.""Enix" was basically just one guy who funded game development for third parties. After the merger, he cashed out and hasn't worked with the company at all. Square became the controlling property of the merged company, even though it was the Enix side that bought their debt.tl;dr Enix didn't do anything. The terrible Square management did. Which was the same management before and after the merger (Wada and his board).>11 was the last true Square game. Everything else after has been unredeemable trash that's not turned much of a profit, which is why SE has had to do outsource cutscene work for other studios to pay the bills after they killed off their cashcows. While the games sucked, XV, Kingdom Hearts and a number of others that came out after the merger were very profitable. Not to mention their other MMO FFXIV. Which made more than FFXI.

>>746083941FF7R isn't close to the anime-style it originally was.
>>746083941Modern FF is more of a fusion of CG animation, realism and and Hollywood trends. I mean, Nomura himself even admitted Tifa's redesign was based on a real life Japanese actress and Aeris was based on real life European people. He's going for more realism now. Though of course he won't tell us exactly which ones but...come on.There's still a few anime influences. But it's more in the outlandish fight scenes and some character tropes. Not really the visual style.
>>746084194>And those groups make those decisions in attempts to win over the younger modern audiences that engage with that shitNo, it's purely to appease the shareholders, who are putting up a ton of front-loaded money. Plus Sony for their exclusivity deal, which was going to be the bulk of the profit for the game. Like Hollywood, Square didn't care about appealing to the audience anymore. Old or modern. It was about getting the exclusivity deals and shareholder money. Notice how now that they've announced the last episode won't have an exclusivity deal, the director is also suddenly rushed out to say they're making big changes with the last episode based on "player feedback." Translation: "We can finally make a product for the fans because the old model failed.">If they'd doubled down and embraced who put them on the map in the first place, it would've been a more honest product, which would not only appeal to more of the original audience, but likely would've been more appealing to other audiences because it's not like so many others on the marketI totally agree. And it looks like they're going to try and do that for the last episode. All they had to do is remake the original game with better graphics. But they decided to go with the Hollywood model of screw the fans and appease the shareholders. Hopefully this is finally over.

>>746084207Chibi =/= More AnimeFF7R is in line with Advent Children which is in line with FF8 which is closer to what they would have liked FF7 to look more like if it werent their first shot. The problem is in that chain of custody they forgot FF7 character designs (and setting designs) are supposed to look more like the somewhat grungy, but very out there 90s/80s anime design trends that it took inspiration from. It's why Zack goes from being more like a Gene Starwind in FF7 to being more like Sora in Crisis Core and Rebirth. They're still very anime, they emote like anime characters, but the well of inspiration is from modern trends.>>746084292Aerith looks nothing like a western woman in FF7R.She looks like, emotes like, and behaves like an anime girl. That's FINE, I actually like Aerith in FF7R, (while I think they botched Tifa to appeal more to otaku) but you're smoking dick if you think western trends inspired her design.
>And the remake removed most of that sex appeal.you people are insane lol
>>746084826Im with you, dunno wtf they're talking about when they clearly based her off of a JAV actress this go around. My problem with Tifa in remakes isnt how she looks, I just think they flattened her personality.BUT, I also played the not accurate original English localization, so maybe this is how she always was.
>>746084743FF7AC wasn't really anime- style either is was like FF: The Spirits Within. Even the non-chibi models in 1997's FF7 looked like 80s and 90s anime.
>>746084743>Aerith looks nothing like a western woman in FF7R.She looks very Eastern European (but with an Irish ass joke here).>She looks like, emotes like, and behaves like an anime girl. No, she behaves like a Japanese actress trying to be cute. If you go watch a lot of live action Japanese movies, you'll see the difference. And how they use that exaggerated body language and annunciation style in the cutscenes for FFVII remake. This, plus how her and the other characters have a more realistic body proportion (7.5 heads rather than the 6 heads and more chibi proportions of the original FFVII) changes the art style and tone. Even if you want to imagine her as an anime girl, her performance and look is trying to be more realistic. Though "realistic" in this sense is like saying a Telenovella is more realistic than a spanish cartoon.

>>746084952I meant to attach an FF8 image when I originally replied to you.I think they would have gladly made FF7 look like this if they could, and this is still anime. Are the proportions more "realistic"? Sure, but It's still very clearly anime. Japanese people dont look like The Bouncer or FFX characters, as much plastic surgery as they get to try to.It's like saying Akira isnt anime because the eyes of its characters is too chinky. >>746085010Japanese acting and fashion has always fed into anime and vice versa though.Something like Macross is a product of the 80's/late Showa J-pop era, for example. If they wanted to go big Hollywood, she would emote how she does. Her exaggerated facial and body language isnt even really how you'll see Japanese actresses act in "serious" dramas, either, that behavior tends to be reserved for things that are explicitly more anime in style. Japanese people call it anime, too.Aerith herself looks like a Japanese girl who wears colored contacts and got double eyelid surgery + some further anime exaggerations to her facial features. Her looking like a Japanese character is even more pronounced in her FMV models for remake.
>>746085390The problem is XIII, XIV and XV still made a ton of profit off that name. People finally realized it wasn't what it used to be with XV and then didn't buy XVI. >>746085520I loved FFVIII, and it had it's only 3D anime style as a stand alone title.FFVII didn't stay true to its original style.
>>746085826You're right they're being steered by consultants. But those consultants have been outed as having an agenda and straight up lying. Outed by the very hedge funds that created them. These hedge funds were playing the investors to generate profit for themselves, then propping up the companies that went along with it. The shareholders kept having to pay more and more money into the system for the hope of a return. But the hedge funds like Blackrock and the companies used their up front investment money. It's the classic pyramid scheme taken to a crazy level. But anyway, the point is, the phantom modern audience was never the target. Because their "modern audience" was just the handful of consultants. The whole scheme fell apart two years ago when Blackrock's CEO just outright admitted the scam. And said he was moving away from it to switch to focusing on AI. And all the investors switched as well. This is why literally every company is suddenly obsessed with AI. And also why suddenly big media companies are talking about appealing to the consumers. At least until their AI stuff gets up and running. Then you're going to see them magically return to ignoring us.
>>746085854>FFVII didn't stay true to its original style.Give me an example of that original style in modern fidelity.Every Japanese franchise from around that era that had a remotely similar style has gone on to look more like FF7R than, well, what you want.Tekken, Ace Combat, Soul CaliburAll of them plus FF7R still look anime, just high fidelity. I think FF8's 3D artstyle was a natural evolution of what FF7 wanted to look like. And in the modern day that looks like FF7R, just with far less 90s character and setting design. If you want to see what happens when you evolve to look less anime, look at Resident Evil. The CG in RE2 is more similar to FF7 than it is to 8, but It's modern incarnation more closely resembles The Last of Us than FF7R or Tekken 8.The latter two are still anime, even their western characters sure as fuck dont look White. They look anime White.Just as they did in the PS1 days. Same shit higher fidelity.
>>746086059Whatever the audience may or not be, I'm just not going to settle for what they're offering Square would never see things as "oh, they're interested in the 7, we should give them something to a truer remake"They'd see it as "hey, we were right all along! We need even moar actiony sparkles and flips!!!" "No plot either, JUST. OPEN. WORLD. WANDERING."Reali life is exhausting enough, I'm not going to become complacent with my one hobby I went "all in" on
>>746078002>>746078505>>746080431I think it's the fact none of them smile with their eyes that makes it so soulless. Kinda like Mr Beast.
Honestly, if I were Square, I would make an FF MOBA, maybe extending it to other titles they own like Chrono Trigger and DQ.And I'm talking a 1:1 LoL clone with FF skins, copied business model and everything. F2P with purchasable skins and gimmicks. They have so much untapped IP content that they refuse to farm. I saw that they are trying to do some mobile shit with Dissidia but it's half-arsed. They should look to the profitability of FF14 and triple down on that. An FF MOBA would act as advertisement for their older games, generating more sales and newfound love for characters and settings, giving them more room to justify making remakes or more games within the universe.
>>746086250>All of them plus FF7R still look anime, just high fidelity. Actually, all the stuff you mentioned don't look like anime. That's the problem. And also why I dropped most of those IPs (except Tekken which always sucked). I was one of the biggest DOA fans alive. Until DOA5. And now all the classic characters look like the same uncanney CGI dolls as the other series you mentioned. And FFVII Remake is doing the same thing, like you said. It just has 100x more budget to make the CGI dolls have better lighting, lip movement and sweat glands. But they still don't look like anime.Other series like Dragon Quest or the myriad of anime games still look like anime. And nothing like the semi realistic, uncanney valley CGI dolls.FF8 is kind of a weird outlier because it had its own style. And the characters in the FMVs and the models in game look nothing alike. But FFVIII also has this weird thing where it has some of the best cinematography for the FMVs. While the models are hit or miss. I definitely agree this was the start of the modern FF style. But it wasn't quite there yet. FFVIII and X still had more anime influence than realism or Animatrix/Spirits Within. After those, they became more like Spirits Within and the shitty CGI Hollywood was making.>>746086349I totally agree with you. And this is why I'm not supporting FFVII Remake (or much of what Square has done in the last decade). Just pointing out what the true source of it is. Outside influence.
>>746086250Dragon Quest has kept its Toriyama style for decades, even after it went 3D.
>>746086628I asked you to name a series that looked like FF7's longer proportioned CGI that is "anime style" in the modern day.Dragon Quest might resemble the chibi FF7 models, but those were a compromise.Modern Dragon Quest looks nothing like an evolution of pic related -- FF7R, Tekken 8, and Ace Combat do.The modern version of FF7's artstyle in high fidelity isnt ultra exaggerated cartoon, that'd be more FF9, It's what we got in remake. That's still anime.Would you say GitS (1995) isnt anime but GitS (2026) is? That'd be silly. More cartoony proportions =/= more anime.FF7 aspired to be more like the former than the latter.Dead or Alive is a great example because that continued to look very anime.
>>746086964>I asked you to name a series that looked like FF7's longer proportioned CGI that is "anime style" in the modern day.Why would I name some when my point is pointing out how the longer proportioned style is what makes it not anime? I already explained multiple times the difference between them, with examples. How FFVII Remake has the characters with 7.5 heads tall realistic proportions and the original game uses 6 heads tall anime proportions. Using your Ghost in the Shell example, the first Ghost in the Shell movie still uses 6 heads tall proportions. Maybe 6.5 for Batou. But the point is, despite more gritty shading and darker style, it's still closer to other anime series. And closer to the designs for the original FFVII on PS1. The Remake isn't close to these at all. It is going for a more realistic style of 7.5 heads. Aka the Loomis method. As well as changing a number of other things.>Modern Dragon Quest looks nothing like an evolution of pic related Yeah...because it's keeping to a more anime style. And the various other examples you keep giving are trying to go more towards a fusion of anime and realism. With less and less anime and more western/Hollywood style realism each iteration. Are you starting to get it?>Dead or Alive is a great example because that continued to look very anime. Not since 5.
>>746087679>Why would I name some when my point is pointing out how the longer proportioned style is what makes it not anime? So you're saying FF7 was never anime? That's retarded. This conversation has clearly reached it's endpoint. All I asked was for you to name a game which the proportions are like OG FF7's CGI proportions. You've proceeded to go "well uhmm... no"Dragon Quest character style and proportions look nothing like OG FF7's CGI cutscenes. Again more cartoony =/= more anime, inherently

This thing called reading really helps when you're trying to argue a point.>All I asked was for you to name a game which the proportions are like OG FF7's CGI proportions.>Dragon Quest and the myriad of anime games>Dragon Quest character style and proportions look nothing like OG FF7's CGI cutscenes. They are both 6-6.5 heads tall and bigger eyes. Hell, they both even have spikey hair protagonists. Literally the only major difference is some character design features and shading. This is of course just for some of the FMVs. Other FMVs use the chibi models. But I assume you mean the larger FMV models. Which are based on Nomura's art designs. Which are....6.5 heads tall and very anime. They look nothing like the FFVII Remake designs. Much closer to designs in Dragon Quest V and VI.>Again more cartoony =/= more anime, inherentlyI'm not claiming that. But I'm starting to think you might be thinking that yourself. Since I'm starting to assume you think FFVII "looks nothing like Dragon Quest" because it's...darker I guess?>This conversation has clearly reached it's endpoint.Clearly, when you don't even read the other side. Or maybe you did and decided to leave because of that.
NTA but I've always considered FF not to be anime. I'm a bit funny about the classification of anime though because I don't think a lot of the tropes we associate with "anime" didn't really form until as late as the 00s. 80s and 90s japanese animation was way more varied and that's the era FF came out of. The concept art inspiring FF designs is just patently not manga/anime. Even Dragon Ball, which obviously IS anime, has a somewhat different feel coming out of the 80s that allows it to appeal more widely overseas, it's appeal to audiences is not as an anime.Anime flanderised into something very specific in the 00s, there are many JRPGs which lean into that audience like Persona, FE, etc. FF just doesn't, the art and style has always been distinct
>>746087907FF7 was anime- style in 1997.

>>746088259Again, you've failed to name a modern game which resembles the art style of FF7's non-chibi models. You know as well as I do, the style every game from this era ended up going with in high fidelity, modern graphics, is the natural evolution. The fact that you say pic related isnt anime really says it all. That's why we've reached the end point of the conversation. You've created such an incorrect idea of what an "anime" artstyle is in 3D you cant be reasoned with.
>>746080431They lost their attention-based currency now that a GPU in some remote server farm can put out something they'd take hours or days to make in minutes.
>>746089317>name me a game that looks like FF7 but is modernDragon Quest XI. It looks closer to the original FF7 artstyle than FFVII Remake does. Jade even has similar proportions and hair as Tifa.>D-Dragon Quest doesn't work because I said so!>therefore the argument is over, I winGee, I wonder why the argument ended...
>>746089317DQ Heroes II came out a few years before FF7R and Jessica from DQ VIII still had the anime look.
>>746089480>>746089753So, unironically, you think this is the artstyle FF7R needed to be "true to the original"...
>>746090030...Despite pic related being the immediate follow up to FF7?
>>746083410>PaineYuck
7 is beyond overrated

Where the fuck is the X-2 Rikku pornno wonder FF as a series is dying
>>746090030No. I think it should have been like FF7s original art style. Or take on the art style many other artists have used, both official and unofficial. There's literally hundreds of fan and official manga which redesigned the characters to look a certain anime way. And it would have made tons of fans happy if they used this style. Or used the original Nomura designs. But instead Nomura continued to focus on his CGI models like FFXIII and XV.Anyway, you're trying so hard to strawman but don't realize we can see your argument coming from a mile away. Next you're going to try to return to your argument from like 15 posts ago about how FFVII Remake shouldn't be the same as the original game and some alterations are necessary. And I'll just return to my original point that sure, you can change the style somewhat. But it should keep to the anime style. And then you'll go ballistic and bitch that it HAS to be made more like it is because that's the "natural progression", just like all these other games I named are doing. And then I'll point out how there's a myriad of other JRPGs/Anime games that aren't. But you magically ignore those because they don't fit your argument. In other words, we're stuck in a circular argument. So instead, I'll just point out the eventual end of this argument. You may be fine with the new style for FFVII Remake. The problem is, a good deal of people aren't. Even Square themselves admit it didn't sell as much as they wanted. The most anticipated remake of the "greatest game of all time" couldn't even sell as much as the original. And a large part of that is, a number of fans didn't like the redesigns. There's plenty of other issues as well, from the exclusivity deal to the massive changes in the story and so on. But the most talked about thing before and after it came out was the changes in Tifa/Aeris' designs and the censorship of their clothes. Whether you want to admit it or not.
>>746078002it never died, it's just that the series has been plagued with some bad entries. 10 was already pretty mediocre, so that itself showed a downward trend. besides the combat and summoning, the story was weak and the writing/voice direction was awful, and the characters are bland (with exception of riku). 12 takes a very different direction with more serious themes, so some might find that boring, but at least the characters are good. 13 is complete ass. 15 has best girl (iris) but some don't like it. 16 again takes a serious tone.
>>746078002It didn't. Why do you refuse to take your meds?
>>746078002>>746078505There are so so many pictures of these characters, official and fanmade alike, why do you feel the need to bring more ai shit into the world
>>746090563To put a much finer point on it, I think there would have been almost no division amongst fans if Tifa looked like this, rather than the CGI redesign she got. And a whole bunch of new people who didn't play the original game would be fine with it too, because big booby anime girls are pretty normal. But because they redesigned her to be 1) not anime and 2) more realistic (smaller) proportions, it angered half the fans. And a number of potential new people who might have looked at the game for Tifa's design instead saw something that looked like the Tomb Raider Reboot or Dead or Alive Reboot or Tekken Reboot or you know...dozens of other generic quazi realistic/CGI designs. As you've pointed out in many examples. This and many other fanartists redesigns aren't exactly the same as Nomura's original designs in the original FFVII. But they're way closer than his redesign in FFVII Remake.
>>746090563>>746090907My contention is with the idea that It's not anime-styled.“Anime” is not synonymous with “six heads tall and huge eyes.”Is pic-related not anime style? Is Avatar The Last Airbender more anime than Dead or Alive because the characters are drawn 6-6.5?You seem to think that higher fidelity rendering = no longer anime, which is why all of your counter-examples are all simpler rendering, simpler character models in poly count and texture.Put Claire in RE2make next to Aerith in FF7Remake and there's a clear fucking difference in art style. The former is realistic, the latter is anime.

>>746091252If you really want to split hairs, anything that isn't strictly live action can be considered "anime." Because it's just the Japanese slang for animation. This includes CGI/3D animation. To get past this dumb argument, I'm fine agreeing that it is "anime." But I'm not conceding the point that it isn't anything close to the original games design or what many people wanted/expected from the FFVII remake. And yes, if you showed people an image of a character from DOA5 and on next to Avatar (and they somehow didn't know which either one is), I'm confident they'd say Avatar "looked more anime." In the same way if you showed someone a picture of a classic 2D Disney movie next to an image from Toy Story, they'd say the classic 2D image looks more like a "cartoon." I don't agree with these stereotypes, but they exist. And this stereotype is also precisely why Square kept moving Final Fantasy more towards quazi realism.
>>746091564I'll concede that FF7R isn't directly translating the original Nomura character designs to 3D then. What I take umbrage with is this;>or what many people wanted/expected from the FFVII remake. My issue back then everyone would have considered FF8 a visual upgrade from 7, no reservations.Hell, in my mind's eye I remember FF7's CGI cutscenes looking like FF8's.Because you're right, FF7's actual original character designs are shorter and have more exaggerated proportions. But I think people would prefer Tifa look like Rinoa more than she look like Jade from DQ.I'm not even THAT positive on FF7R's visual design decisions, mind you.I think Midgar's environments in Part 1 were not translated well to the remake, clearly making creative decisions to get away from the crusty dieselpunk in favor the cleaner look we saw from Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core (really, it starts with The Bouncer as that's what the 3D artists style of Square turned into).I've always felt like they ditched the more 90's grungy anime aesthetics from the character designs to a degree ever since Advent Children, and that extends to so many parts of the game, from the writing, to the environment, to the characters visuals and personality. But I do think they generally hit the right ballpark, whereas for you, I think you'd prefer they went in an entire direction altogether and I just disagree. But I don't think It's accurate at all to say that they made it not anime. It's still very anime visually (and ofc every other aspect of the game is "anime" other than the terrible western game design decisions)
>>746092127>My issue back then everyone would have considered FF8 a visual upgrade from 7, no reservations.I was in high school at the time and there were tons of people hating on FF8. Precisely for everything that wasn't exactly the same as FF7. It's dumb, but it happened. Even before Spoony and the internet did their attacks on the game. I still remember people hating on the characters for being "too pretty" and the setting not being "dark and gritty enough" and so on. Then magically all this hate disappeared when FFX came out. And suddenly Yuna was super beautiful and perfect. Despite looking like a redesigned Rinoa. Note they also drooled over Lulu as the successor to Tifa. And I'd argue this strengthens the idea that staying closer to anime is the smarter choice. Because every game since XIII has had many people complain about the newer characters.>But I think people would prefer Tifa look like Rinoa more than she look like Jade from DQ.I suppose we can't really ever know. But it's my view that if she had proportions like we see from basically all fanart before the redesign or something closer to Jade, the vast majority of people would have expected it. Maybe not everyone would have loved it, but they'd have expected it. In other words, not a huge division like we see with FFVII Remake. Note, these divisions were even there with Advent Children. Tons of hardcore fans didn't like it. For many reasons. Many of the ones you listed.
