What vidya has the best storytelling? For example, using gameplay, world, and environments to tell a story.
Dark Souls
>>746079816Bloodborne has better storytelling than Dark Souls imo

>>746079743Inigo's story specifically in Skyrim really stands out for me as a character with an incredibly well-presented history
>>746081043What quest is it? I forget
>>746081098He's a modded follower, his only quest involves going and talking to some rando stalker (until SmartBlueCat stops being a lazy fuck and updates the mod) but his dialogue and journal are amazingly written
>>746080504The game concept is that the previous Supreme God (Pantokrator) has vanished, and the game takes place during the ascension wars in which various would-be-gods - lesser deities the Pantokrator had imprisoned and that are now breaking free, ancient monsters, archmages powerful enough to have attained immortality, etc - are battling out who gets to be the next Pantokrator, each leading a different faction inspired by history or mythology rather than fantasy cliches.Relating to the topic, what happens during the course of the actual match is emergent story (but I will argue that this is also essentially a part of vidya storytelling, as events don't occur unless you have mechanics and gameplay incentives that enable them: it is in some sense as much part of story design as scripted dialogue), but interestingly, it also has "emergent fluff": it implements all kinds of fluff details mechanically even if inconsequential (for example, Heart Companions of Arcoscephale, riffing off the Sacred Band of Thebes, are mechanically gay as they cannot be seduced by women), and describes mechanical details in fluff (for example, Astral Corruption fluff seen in pic related talks about the spell being banned in ancient times, etc, etc, and this isn't just wordswordswords description for doing 10d6 damage: it basically is a war declaration against all, in multiplayer games forming an instant coalition against you). Moreover, the playable factions are divided to three playable ages (a match takes place in one: many factions appear in two or more, but you don't progress between them within the game): there's no lore dump, but instead you can use these kinds of mechanical details to piece together a puzzle of what happened between the ages.
>>746081364This sounds very interesting, thanks for the writeup anon. I’ll definitely check it out and give it a play
System Shock (1993)
>nobody at all has mentioned shadow of the colossus yet
>>746081364game has decent prose, period. also the worldbuilding is synthetical and clearly the creator is fluent in TTRPG tropes. he consolidated it in the best ways, i find. also an erudite history buff, iirc

>>746084348Yes, but it’s still the best manga ever made
>>746079743It was short but I liked it a lot. Hard to feel immersed in a fictional world as an adult

Berserk peaked with the Golden Age arc and never recovered
>>746079743>What vidya has the best storytelling? Actually none

>>746085950The tower of conviction arc is still great thoughever.
>>746079743FURI has pretty cool storytelling, unique to video games.
La-Mulana 1 & 2. Unlike most games, the lore and background scenery actually matters to the gameplay instead of being meaningless flavour text.
>>746079743bioshockdead spacedark souls 2011bloodborne is also good, but not as good as DS1.
